wow, really shows how much this whole relationship was about what she could give to him rather than what he could provide for her. She opens up to him and he's more impressed by the fact that he's special enough for her to share that with rather than supporting her through her fears and insecurities.
that's....really observant and insightful
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. Everyone always seems to vilify Summer. Of course she had her flaws, but Tom was pretty self centered in this relationship. Obviously he's the protagonist so the story is centered around him, but it;s still quite interesting. When the narrator is speaking over Summer's dream monologue in the original cut of this scene, it's almost like Tom is tuning her out. Like he's not interested with the content of the deep and personal story she's telling, because he's more focused on the fact that he feels special.
@@emyfrancisco4656 Yes! So good! And I get frustrated when people talk about how much they hate this movie because she's a typical 'manic pixie dream girl' and has no observable character development or traits other than being quirky. She's only perceived that way because we're looking at her through Tom's eyes, and he refuses to acknowledge her as anything other than superficially perfect.
That's why it feels jarring when we find out that she's engaged - because it contradicts the image that he had created of her in his head, which is all we saw.
Wow you're so intelligent, I've never thought like that before.
@@emyfrancisco4656 Tom's actually the one I find more insufferable, probably bc he reminds me of an ex of mine and I was more like Summer, even though I'm male and she's female. I don't think either side is in the right though, I just identify with being on the receiving side of someone's idealization in the same way Tom did to Summer.
Nobody understood this scene. She dreams that she’s flying and free… which shows in how she lives her life (moving to states, getting new jobs, dating and experiencing people. Basically not staying in one place for too long) but then she says she looks down and realizes she’s alone. And the feeling stays with her after she wakes up and she’s in a bad mood. That’s her subconscious, she’s feels lonely. And she’s never talked about it before. No matter how free spirited she is, she feels alone. She didn’t want to be anybody’s girlfriend because (like tom) they weren’t right for her. Never asking about her interest in the way she asks about his. She didn’t like the way he spoke about people in the bar fight scene, didn’t like the way he wasn’t brave or doesn’t take charge (that’s why she kissed him in the copy room, cause that’s who SHE is. She wanted him to kiss her that night after the company date) (she shows up to his place in the pouring rain and he couldn’t even dial her number) that’s why she says the guy she married met her by walking up to her and asking about the book she was reading. That line explains everything. He matched her in ways other people couldn’t. That’s why she never wanted to be someone’s girlfriend, because it was always something that happened that show there’s reasons to not be together. She knows it’s messy and people’s feelings get hurt (or as summer puts it when she’s recalling her past relationships… “life” , meaning she believes it’s just in the way people are) that’s why she never loved someone. She liked them enough to want to be with them but didn’t like them enough to not love them. She learned through her parent’s divorce that all it takes is for you to not feel like it’s not going to work. That’s how it’s been for her and everybody she knows(that’s why she’s crying during the movie “the graduate”, she never felt like she’d find someone she’d work out with. In the scene that she’s watching while crying, the girl in the wedding dress, Elaine, just left her fiancé at the altar to run away with the guy she’s next to, Ben. Who just ended a relationship with elaine’s mother. It’s implied that they will not end well. Summer’s “ben” is tom.
But she chose to marry that guy because she felt like it could work. She didn’t want to be alone, she was never in a relationship where she felt like they could make it work. Tom had a really fair chance too, but there was no way he would’ve done anything different. He was just who he was. And she understood that. I’m just writing this just in case someone’s discovering this film for the first time and wants to understand it better like I am. Even YEARS after it’s been released 😂 its a really great movie!
Wow...just wow
This is such a good analysis, this really is a great movie.
I feel like I might have watched this or seen it on a commercial or something but I don’t remember however, I like your explanation of the movie. That makes sense. I am going to strive to think deeper about the movies I watch. I’m probably missing so much. lol
The film changes with your experiences, in general I maintain that she is "more responsible" but the film shows a relationship.
It's not anyone's fault that their relationship went down a different path, that's just it.
Fantastic analysis! I've seen the movie 15 + times and never seen what you did. Thanks 😊
His girlfriend opened up to him about something that’s clearly upsetting her and he immediately made it about himself 💀
I have a major crush on Joseph
He shouldn’t have said I guess I’m not just anyone. He should’ve been like: “well I thank you for trusting me enough to tell me something that means a lot to you.”
well said.
@@frankinsaneandmyrrh1202 I try my best
Used to hate summer, not anymore, these kinds of relationship, its just part of life.
Me too. Used to hate Summer, but now in the same page with Summer about relationship. Why do we so concern about labels, "boyfriend/girlfriend", rather than how we actually feel about it.
I used to date someone who looked a lot like Joseph Gordon Levitt... I never appreciated it tho. Silly me.
The worst mistake of your life then
It's okay. Move on. Life goes on.

I date someone who looks like him right now, and it's awesome lol

Love this edit
I dont understand how people sympathize with this guy. In my first watch only i could only see him as a loser. He is too self centered and underconfident. He tries constantly to make her fall in love with her .. making everything about him in the process. Trying to show how special he is. I dont think he ever loved Jess. He just had a fantasy about her but she was always honest about the way she felt. As a sane human being you cant ever choose a guy like this or even fall jn love with them. Coz they just ..dont think about you. Rather they just dream about some fantasy where they are getting loved.
Is this actually a scene from the movie? I remember the part where he’s walking by the fountain, but I don’t remember the bedroom scene
It's an extended scene! Mostly cut out of the movie.
That's a great cover of close to You who sing the song?

Where did you find these scenes? I am pretty sure the same dialogues were shown differently in the movie.
This is a class assignment in which we had access to all the footages shot for this particular scene, had to play around with them.😄
