Me too. Used to hate Summer, but now in the same page with Summer about relationship. Why do we so concern about labels, "boyfriend/girlfriend", rather than how we actually feel about it.

I've posted this a few times but i met a guy 15 years ago who was basically Tom and i was Summer. He fell super hard really quickly where as i told him i just wanted fwb. We did this on and off for a year til i sadly broke his heart and found a new guy. BIGGEST MISTAKE of my life. 15 years later i bumped into my Tom at a gig, we hit it off again instantly, i was a lot more mature and so was he. I'm now his wife and i give birth to our first baby in 6 weeks ❤❤ right person, wrong time. He's the most perfect husband ever.

This seems to be a slightly different version of the scene that ended up in the movie. I can see small variations in script, editing, and direction.

I dont understand how people sympathize with this guy. In my first watch only i could only see him as a loser. He is too self centered and underconfident. He tries constantly to make her fall in love with her .. making everything about him in the process. Trying to show how special he is. I dont think he ever loved Jess. He just had a fantasy about her but she was always honest about the way she felt. As a sane human being you cant ever choose a guy like this or even fall jn love with them. Coz they just ..dont think about you. Rather they just dream about some fantasy where they are getting loved.

Also this version actually seems like it would play out like a real conversation though. The final movie version is much more cinematic and flowing, but in reality it would be like this I think.

Nobody understood this scene. She dreams that she’s flying and free… which shows in how she lives her life (moving to states, getting new jobs, dating and experiencing people. Basically not staying in one place for too long) but then she says she looks down and realizes she’s alone. And the feeling stays with her after she wakes up and she’s in a bad mood. That’s her subconscious, she’s feels lonely. And she’s never talked about it before. No matter how free spirited she is, she feels alone. She didn’t want to be anybody’s girlfriend because (like tom) they weren’t right for her. Never asking about her interest in the way she asks about his. She didn’t like the way he spoke about people in the bar fight scene, didn’t like the way he wasn’t brave or doesn’t take charge (that’s why she kissed him in the copy room, cause that’s who SHE is. She wanted him to kiss her that night after the company date) (she shows up to his place in the pouring rain and he couldn’t even dial her number) that’s why she says the guy she married met her by walking up to her and asking about the book she was reading. That line explains everything. He matched her in ways other people couldn’t. That’s why she never wanted to be someone’s girlfriend, because it was always something that happened that show there’s reasons to not be together. She knows it’s messy and people’s feelings get hurt (or as summer puts it when she’s recalling her past relationships… “life” , meaning she believes it’s just in the way people are) that’s why she never loved someone. She liked them enough to want to be with them but didn’t like them enough to not love them. She learned through her parent’s divorce that all it takes is for you to not feel like it’s not going to work. That’s how it’s been for her and everybody she knows(that’s why she’s crying during the movie “the graduate”, she never felt like she’d find someone she’d work out with. In the scene that she’s watching while crying, the girl in the wedding dress, Elaine, just left her fiancé at the altar to run away with the guy she’s next to, Ben. Who just ended a relationship with elaine’s mother. It’s implied that they will not end well. Summer’s “ben” is tom. But she chose to marry that guy because she felt like it could work. She didn’t want to be alone, she was never in a relationship where she felt like they could make it work. Tom had a really fair chance too, but there was no way he would’ve done anything different. He was just who he was. And she understood that. I’m just writing this just in case someone’s discovering this film for the first time and wants to understand it better like I am. Even YEARS after it’s been released 😂 its a really great movie!

The film changes with your experiences, in general I maintain that she is "more responsible" but the film shows a relationship. It's not anyone's fault that their relationship went down a different path, that's just it.

It's so strange to see this movie when you don't know your worth and don't love yourself (Tom's POV). And then again when you finally realize your worth and do love yourself. Makes you smile both times, but for the former, because it makes you hopeful. And the latter, because its actually a good movie that makes you say, wow, how could someone actually think they could be happy searching for happiness based on if they have someone or not? There is no greater love than to give your life for someone, but there could be no greater respect than the one you have for yourself. To be happy with someone, anyone, you must first be happy on your own. Truly happy. Or else you'll never be happy with anyone, even if they are the most beautiful, gorgeous, nicest, most awesome person in the world.
