Thank you for this video! I also live in S. California, in Redlands, and wondered how the GX460/4Runner handled these sandy roads out in the desert. I was afraid of ATRAC and 4LO because it might reduce momentum, and you need momentum for sand, so I have read. I thought my only choice would be Multi Terrain Select in Sand mode that is not available on most GX460 trim levels and not on the 4Runner SR5. And you just showed that the GX460 in 4HI with TRAC works fine.

If the TRAC/A-TRAC systems already redirect power to the wheel with traction, when do you really need to lock the center differential? Having all the options available in my GX, I am a bit confused as to when I should use MTS, lock center diff or rely on the default TRAC and A-TRAC systems to do their job. Also, if i lock my center diff, do i need to turn off all the traction control settings (TRAC, VSC, ABS) and can there be any damage if all systems try to interfere with each other? I went for my first desert driving experience last week with an off-road club and they suggested everyone to turn off all these features before entering the desert. I have watched your other video where you mentioned that this is an old school way of doing things and need not be followed given the capability of the modern-day GX.
I drive Toyota Prado 150. When I engage center diff lock, trac off light comes on as you show and when i put it in 4Lo, the light still stays on (in my car, center diff lock and 4lo are sequential. It is a turning knob). Are you saying, in this status, TRAC is off, but VSC and ATRAC are on? Makes sense. Then, when I hold trac button 3 seconds (same as on gx460), trac off and 🚙 OFF lights come on as you show (GX460 display says VSC system off in sentence, but my car shows no such sentence). I am little bit confused here. You said in this instance, every thing is off: TRAC, VSC, and ATRAC, but at the same time you said 4Lo engaged means ATRAC is on. In my experience, in this status, there is no ATRAC on. Even, I don't think there is ATRAC system in it. Last year, I got stuck in deep snow and in this status car was slipping. No system seemed on. Then, without holding the button 3 seconds, with only trac off light (TRAC off, but VSC is on, not sure on ATRAC), car didn't slip that much and got unstuck. I use my truck offroad more than 50% and often use the systems, but i don't think I heard ABS engaging when I am in 4Lo, hinting that there is no ATRAC. I will check it again.

Thanks, keep up videos! I wonder if a lift kit and different tires will give that extra clearance and keep from cutting off all of the body kit. Hoping to convince wife to use her GX 460 for more than street but she’s not keen on cutting up the 2021….
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD they all do cut power. Traction cuts engine power AND brakes spinning wheels. Cutting engine power and braking functioning together. Is what it really do...those software system.

yes trac works great we are in loose sand all the time in 4H... so issues and we've never once aired down yet 😆

holding the button for 3-5 seconds turns everything off, trac, vsc, atrac. Hope that clears things up

go into 4low... lock the center differential... it will turn on Atrac and turn off trac and vsc

Both. Trac is a 4H aid. ATRAC is a 4L aid.

No ATRAC is standard on most toyota 4runners, GX, LX, LC.. MTS is basically an adjustable "trac"

Traction control DO cut engine power...
depends on what type... TRAC, VSC, ATRAC and MTS are all different
