I volunteer at this zoo frequently. It is one of the top rated zoos in the world. Everyone saying that this is awful and that we need to abolish zoos don't know what they're talking about. This particular zoo (Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo) is involved in countless conservation projects. Also, neither of the gorillas got severely injured and this is not an everyday event. It is perfectly fine for these two gorillas to live together.

Their descendants will do the same.

this area is only a small portion of their enclosure. If they weren't interested in seeing the 'hoomans' or being seen by them, there are other places they can go to get away. Todays zoos build enclosures first for the needs of the animals but they do have to have an area where the visitors can see the animals...or who would come ? Zoos are important places where we can learn a lot about the animals, breed them so that we always have them ...so that if the wild population is decimated for whatever reason...we have the ability to fix the problem and bring them back. For example....they have done that with a species of tree frog that was decimated after a dam was built in order to help the human population in the area. The authorities, after realizing what had happened..... made adjustments to an area to create a proper environment for the frogs.....and because there was a zoo in the united states that had some of these frogs...they upped their breeding program and were able to reintroduce them. This is a very abbreviated part of the story, but a real success story and small example of why zoos are important. How can anyone care very much about something they know nothing about or have no experience with ? Zoos introduce people to animals they would never see or learn about otherwise and creates an interest and a reason to "care" ! They are a far cry from the depressing places of iron bars and cement floors of a century ago.

In the comment section someone said they asked the zookeepers about these two fella’s and the zookeepers explained they are brothers and they always fight like this. Neither of them ever get hurt. They would be a lot more aggressive if they were defending their family from danger or if they really were challenging each other but in the case of these two brothers it’s not that serious. The fight is really natural, the 2 males are just fighting over rank. One of the 2 is probablythe alpha male and the other of the 2 is probably number 2 in rank. And the when the gorilla stood up to the glass he was most likely trying to impress, how he did it was a bit strange but you could see by the way he had his lips curld towards the inside of his mouth that he was trying to impress.

Ok just to clear some things up for you “animal activists” those gorillas are born in captivity so they would never learn the skills of a wild gorilla so they wouldn’t survive
1.They wouldn’t know what a predator is and what not because they never came across to one
2.They wouldn’t have the social skills like the wild ones
3.They wouldn’t know what they should eat or what not to eat
4.They would be probably killed by poachers
5.Zoo’s are there to help the population of the species not to hold them in a cage like a prison most zoo’s with endangered species like the mountain gorilla often have breeding programs where they send them to gorilla schools in Africa don’t believe me google it lmao the same thing with orang utans they get rehabilitation but they only take baby gorillas so they can adapt better so zoo’s are helping endangered species and not let them rot there like some people think so get you’re facts straight before talking nonsense
