The security guard is ignorant of proper evidence collecting protocol. The police had no authority to collect fingerprints either and by collecting them the security guard made them worthless in court as they would not be admissible. He was well meaning but if he had been a good security guard he would have been more aware of a break-in.
I can’t believe you covered this story. Miya is one of my childhood bestfriends. I watch this channel religiously and when I saw the picture of marlon sr (miyas dad) my heart sank. I had been hoping one of these big true crime channels would cover her case. I’m so happy that you made this video. I’m hoping her story gets the coverage it deserves. May her beautiful soul rest in peace.
would you like to share one of your fondest memories of Miya? I would love to have a different image to remember her by than the unjust notoriety she was given ):
I had to look up where this happened because I think my friend and I ran into Marlon a while back. It was in Florida too. He was the nicest guy and helped my buddy and I out. Hope it wasn’t this guy heart goes out to the family either way though

some PDs legit do not give 2 shits. my local police refused to show up when a truck jumped the curb, destroyed my mom's car in a parking lot, then drove back up the grass and sped off because they "dont show up to hit & runs anymore" and that she should file a fucking police report. the only reason that guy EVENTUALLY got ripped up by our insurance is because a fucking employee at that Firestone jumped into his car and gave chase all the way to the dude's house. Some jokes write themselves.
You can really tell how much love Miya's family has for her, to pull out all the stops to try and find out what happened to her, even when the police failed to act accordingly. My heart goes out to them. RIP Miya
The start I wasn't getting too much... did the family goto the management with their concerns? I know from the end they have a lawsuit against to apartments but I feel like the friends and family should have taken the info they had weeks before to the management instead of just asking for help from the friends as "what should I do"... My heart goes out to the family and the poor girl. The guy should have rotted in jail! We had a creepy maintenance person in our apartments that went to jail for doing the samething. The police failed too! Just a terrible and tragic story. It happens way too often it seems 😭
I love how they roasted him by pointing out that $600 was his life’s savings! 🤣 Hey I get it Armando, weed, OnlyFans subscriptions and Doritos ain’t cheap the days.
Definitely! I also think the security guard deserves some kudos. He was not personally involved like the family, but went above and beyond to collect evidence and help the family out in the early stages.
My heart dropped when I saw the thumbnail. I lived here when this happened. I actually told police that was outside her place I had dashcam footage of that night and they acted like it wasn’t that serious and told me they’ll give me a call if they needed it and never did. I met both Miya and Armando. Even tho I spoke to her once she was sweet and complimented me, I’ve always thought she was so pretty everytime I saw her. Armando came into my complex once to fix broken plug. It’s crazy to think someone like that had access to our apartments. What a fucking insecure coward going out like that. it’s even more unfortunate that that happened to Miya. Rest in paradise Miya❤.
I saw the missing posters at UCF when this was going on, and my roommates' gf lived in the apartment complex and knew her. It's wild seeing this case I was remotely close to on this channel.
Maybe if families and communities worked together to solve crimes more often we wouldn't need to depend on the police for every single little problem. There are less police to help your loved ones because they are all dealing with drunks and hoons and shoplifters and SovCits all day every day. Society is the real problem but too lazy to develop a real solution.
We feel this way because this poor girl is dead but realistically, not every case like this can be treated like a homicide. That would be impossible. Especially when 99.6% of missing persons and runaways are on their own will and not foul play like this case.
It’s easier to stay focused on a goal than to stand idle and lament your circumstances. I’ve been there when my dad was killed in a hit and run. Honestly, having something to do by tracking the bastard down was something to do and distracted me from the grief.
It's a sad world where family (and often friends) have to do the work that others in authority should be doing. Seeing the blanket would have been gut wrenching.
Lay out the solution for how the cops could’ve done something differently. Show us how your big brain would juggle thousands of cases and how you could immediately prioritize everything. You people will sit here watching cops solves cases all day and them recording everything they do and then you’ll complain and moan that they can’t immediately throw the entire police force at every missing persons case right away. 99.999% of missing persons reports like this everybody is fine they have to do something called prioritizing. If they immediately opened a murder investigation on every missing persons case they’d have no time for stabbings and gun murders where they know for a fact someone died
@BiggestRedditor First of all, take cases like this more seriously. Switch shifts instead of "being closed on certain days, and open on others". I mean WHO DOES THAT? Second, hire decent people. Not trigger happy cops with a chip on their shoulder. Thirdly, lay off the damn donuts. That list just gets super long. Do you realize the more "authorities" prioritize, as you like to call it, the colder cases like these get? Reason why so many *MUCH YOUNGER* aka Children become missing. And by the time your beloved cops and their "prioritizing" even gets around to things like 🤔 being open even on holidays to do their damn jobs their paid to do, as like the Sheriff's office was closed! Really?! Those missing persons become more and more endangered. Every second counts in cases like these. Not getting around to even starting a full blown investigation is called incompetence. Which is what these cops were guilty of themselves. Incompetence. Standing around while this family asked all of the important pertinent questions that should have been asked by them, PIs, detectives even. This police district didn't even have a detective division branch! So how about YOU tell US, how certain "law enforcement" can also tell people like a victim's family not to do anything? "Let them do their job." Yet they never get around to doing their job? With all of the money received & oftentimes, taken, and all of the people that could become a legit job for another decent police officer, they choose people who stand around looking like police? C'Mon! When it is one of your loved ones, I bet you have a whole different outlook with different words to throw at people then, aye. Bet. Until it touches you, you go ahead and sound the way you are here and now. Smdh
Even worse was she was found a week later, but they could've found her earlier if they actually went to that location sooner. His phone pinged there. Earlier than the other locations they decided to search. He tried to spend the entire night driving to different cities to throw the location off before going to the apartment complex when he supposedly "hears she was missing"... Miya's death still leaves a large hole in her family's hearts. She is literally thought of DAILY.
I never understood why police say “the first 24 hours of a person missing are the most crucial to finding them” but then when an entire family travels to another state in search of their missing family member the cops say they won’t take it seriously for a few days?!?! Can anyone explain why cops do that?
Depending on the missing persons age they don’t believe that anything bad has happened to them bc they are older/an adult. They don’t think it’s necessary to start looking for them right away bc if they do they might be “wasting” resources on a person that didn’t want to be found in the first place.
They contradict themselves: the first 24 hours are important then also say wait 24-48 hours! If they don’t do anything immediately and you KNOW a loved one wouldn’t just disappear, then contact the local news stations and papers. It’s ridiculous, RIP Miya
Depending on the age of the person and the age of the people living in the area, law enforcement may decide to wait so the missing person can return on their own. They don’t want to immediately jump on finding someone who wasn’t actually missing.
The level of incompetence shown by the police department is staggering. If a security guard is conducting a better investigation than the police, then the department needs an overhaul.
@@zee-fr5kwThe police were not lacking resources they were lacking dedication to their responsibilities. How would more funding of a department help? It doesn't mean you attract better people with higher pay, it just gives more money to be siphoned by those at the top.
@@chrisnoname2725 What do you mean how? More resources and personnel to pursue more cases. Everything a department does costs money and depends upon a finite number of man-hours available. You don’t know what you’re talking about

This is my cousin!! Our dads run in the same circles so we looked Out for each other like family. As soon as she stopped texting and never showed up to the airport. We immediately knew something was wrong. It was so frustrating. Having police officers did not take it seriously within the mere hours that something happened to her. I wish that sick bastard had to face justice. Rip Miya. Rest well knowing you're murder shall never receive the eternal life you now bask in. Shame on the police who did too little too late.
Mia was so smart to include her friends and family in whatever was going on in her life. Most young people don’t like having others in their business. This story actually shows just how important it is to let someone close to you know what’s going on in your life in case you need help!
Absolutely 💯 folks talking about tell the Po.Po. The police DOES nothing until many crimes have already been DONE and even then it's just handed over 🙄 to the injustice system! You have to tell those around you, social media, about criminal minded sociopaths protect yourself as much as possible and hope for the best!
Agree 100% sweet smart girl and amazing family! Family should take note and be as loving and supportive and trustworthy so that loved ones are ABLE to come to them about anything. This is a blessed example of true family …a very loving and close-nit family. Father, cousins, grandmother all loved her dearly and knew her very well. ❤️ So sad and terrible that her beautiful life was cut so short. She didn’t deserve what happened to her. ❤
Absolutely, it's also important for parents/family to make their children feel welcome to talk to them. Sometimes when young people don't want to discuss their private life it's because their parents have made them feel judged, or used personal info to try to manipulate and control their adult children. Build trust, it will be worth it.
That’s because the police can’t just search people shit or anything until they have permission or evidence which initially they had none . Y’all wanted these cops to break the laws all because yall know what happened to her . They didn’t know anything at first it was literally a few hours after she went missing . They can’t help that there are laws preventing them to search or anything
This whole family is brilliant. From noticing the window being broken to finding the knife to noticing bronzer on his face, they got evidence out of everything they could

As a former maintenance technician this makes me sick. We’re given a lot of responsibility and i always went out of my way to make sure the women especially felt safe. Yes ma’am’s, not staying longer than I needed, keeping my eyes on my work and even wearing a headphone or taking a phone call hands free so they know I’m not interested in their home, rather just fixing the problem. This is why you need to have a porter position for almost a year (groundskeeper, trash, etc) so you can vet people properly before allowing them into someone’s home. Disgraceful.
You have no idea the peace of mind that gives to many women, especially the ones who have experienced some kind of trauma. Your parents raised a good man 💪🏼

And why should they be? Do you know how many times people will not text their family for a week at a time? It happens all the time!! And do you know why it would take them that long to get to her case? Probably because they are looking into someone else’s case! If you take every case of a college kid not texting or ghosting their family for a few days you would be inundated, and it would take even longer to get around to everyone.

i think people aren't holding the apartment complex's management responsible, too. Also, breaking rules is fine if your life could depend on it - I am amazed that the victim didn't changed her locks ASAP. Yes, that pisses landlords off, but that might be the price of staying alive.
If it was left to the police they wouldn’t have even moved on it for 48 hours, giving him more than enough time to get rid of vital evidence and even flee the state or country if he wanted to.

Because there is only so much under the law police are allowed to do. The family are more than welcome to do these things and then inform police which then grants police all the access they need under the law.
An officer looked into the room and didn’t notice anything wrong?? With the door propped closed with the little bookshelf, the bed a mess, BLOOD on the pillow? That’s definitely negligence. If he would’ve noticed and reported it, maybe this case could’ve been taken seriously. My heart hurts for Miya and her family.
@cgrnt16944 There are rules to evidence collection when it comes to criminal cases and said evidence being used in a criminal court. Anything picked up by a family member and handed to a detective would not be used due to chain of custody issues because it was not photographed as is undocumented by an evidence tech.. they do what they are allowed to do within the bounds of the law which is 100% okay.
I've had to do this same exact thing. The Howell County Sheriff's Department decided that my daughters murder isn't worth their time because she was an addict. We (my husband, myself and my daughters 15 year old son) found her unresponsive in her 12 year old daughters bedroom. We knew the guy (Anthony Martin) murdered her and her own cousin (Janelle DeMeulemeester) gave him the drugs to kill her because she (Janelle) was sleeping with my daughters husband. In Missouri, an unattended death is supposed to be investigated as a homicide. They didn't do this. They took no statements, collected no evidence except for her phone. I had to make my own crime scene collection kit and collect all evidence including vacuuming. He put fentanal in her drink. She knew something was wrong bc she made herself vomit but it was too late. I collected everything and maintained the chain of custody so when I get an attorney, it's all admissible. It's BS that instead of grieving the loss of my first born, I had to collect the evidence and go over her autopsy report. BS. Don't get murdered in Howell County, MO because youll have to fight like hell to get justice. But justice my daughter will have, one way or another.

This entire thing must have been INCREDIBLY frustrating for the family, not to mention the heartbreak finally finding her. They more or less handled the entire investigation themselves and managed to piece together quite a bit of the story. It's unbelievable that the police never held him, not even when they filmed him wearing gloves and removing her items from the car. He just kept walking away from law enforcement the entire time. I admire the family, they were very close and knew instantly something was wrong. They cared for her greatly and did everything to help the situation, so sad to see this all end up like this.
So much praise for this family being able to keep it together while gathering evidence. I wouldn't have been able to keep it together while video taping him. He would have been the one missing after that.
When are people going to realise overwhelmingly police barely 'investigate' anything unless they're under the microscope of media and public attention!? I can't remember a missing persons case where police took a timely and proactive lead; they're always stalling putting in minimal effort forcing victims families to take on the burden of fighting for their right to justice and solving the case for the authorities🤷
And why tf give anyone unfettered access to people's homes!?? I've never heard of ANYONE being able to access another's residence without the owners knowledge or consent in a non emergency situation, not even law enforcement let alone by some rando maintenance employees!!??🤦
This is the most frustrating conclusion to a case I've heard. No real justice, just a possible escape through cowardice. The suspect was found dead almost a week before Miya was found.

We’re told the first 48 hours are the most critical yet there are still some police depts who still follow outdated protocol and don’t do anything until after 48 hours have passed. You can’t assume she’s just with friends or a bf without knowing anything about a person. The family know her and knew she wouldn’t just go AWOL without letting them know.
@@1972dsrai The initial delay was slightly understandable: no direct evidence of foul play other than the family's concerns. However, once the family entered the room and observed what appeared to be blood, a hidden utility knife, and signs of a struggle it 100% should have changed the situation. Even more so once the dude suspected of harassing her showed up unprompted at 4am, flat-out lying in front of the police, and acknowledging he has access to her apartment. Police will often hesitate to start investigating a missing adult unless there's clear indication of foul play. However, it appears the family established that for the police and they still hesitated which absolutely is bad.
This is why protocols for missing persons need to be the same on a national level and outdated protocols such as waiting 48 hours scrapped. Its not fair the level and quality of policing can differ so widely depending on where you live. I assumed the 48 hour rule had been scrapped as an outdated protocol, but clearly not for all depts in the US. From London, UK

Poor girl didn’t deserve any of that and I truly commend the family and security for going above and beyond for her when the literal POLICE didn’t take it seriously. Sleep in peace miya 🦋
How is it that he went from being absolutely obsessed with her every move and thought, but the moment she’s missing he isn’t trying to help find her? Why was that not a red flag??
The fact Miya loved her Teddy so much made my heart hurt.❤ My Teddy is 30 years old, been with me since I was an older teenager and he STILL goes everywhere with me. Lots of love to Miya and her Family.🕊️🕯️❤️🧸🐻
I still have my bunny and he is 50! I was a baby/toddler when I got him. Momma got tired of stitching him up and found another that was brand new and tried to switch while I was sleeping. I woke up looked at it and cried "THIS IS NOT MY BUNNY!" I loved my stained, stitched up everywhere, beat up old bunny. No new bunny was gonna be the same! Still got him...through many relationships and moves.
Poor girl knew he could get in her apartment n was barracading her own door. Thank God she told herfamily things n they investigated him n recorded. God bless . .
Yes. Like the little girl from the bronx. Her mom abused her so bad the neighbors heard it and did nothing. She would still be here if the neighbors called when they heard that child crying for help.
What really gets under my skin is that the girl who is reporting that she heard screams, and not normal screams coming from a first-floor apartment and does not call police
I know! It might have helped if shed called at the time. If she considered it to be bad enough to go and search it out thst is when she should have been on the phone to 911.
For real. And it bugs me that ALLLLLLL these people knew about his weird behavior and nobody reported him to the police (for harassment/stalking) or to the employer/management of the complex. If I knew someone who had access to my apartment was acting this fucking weird, I'd AT LEAST have let the boss know I wasn't comfortable with him having access to my home.
She didn’t call police because she knew that bad things happen to people of color when cops make a visit to a domestic dispute. She didn’t want to be responsible for another tragic killing by a cop. Hindsight is 20/20
The scream could of lasted 30 seconds & then stopped. U wouldn’t call the police if someone lit a loud firecracker just once . if it was continuously going off u are more likely to report it. Hindsight is always 2020.
I’m from Florida and remember this vividly. Leo dropped the ball big time. Her family essentially did the whole investigation from start to finish. It makes you ask if Leo had taken this more serious they could’ve apprehend him before he took the easy way out
That coward got off easy smfh… He deserved to rot in prison but was found deceased and I am so pissed about that… THE POLICE FAILED MIYA 😢 This case infuriates me and makes me sad at the same time… She was so beautiful and that man felt entitled to her. WTF… THIS IS WHY SOME WOMEN SAY THE BEAR
Hearing the family freak out over seeing the items he was getting from the car, all the while trying to obtain evidence for their family because police refused to do their job, was absolutely heartbreaking. This was very hard to watch, especially since the family had to act as the missing persons division themselves. 🤦🏽♀️😔
Riiiiiggghhhttt!!!!! Like when the family followed him to the apartment..the narrator said the police stood by and ALLOWED THE FAMILY TO SEARCH ARMANDOS APARTMENT!! LIKE WTF!!!?? Since when does the police allow civilians/complainants to conduct searches of a potential suspects home/property while they stand by and referee!!!? The family needs to reach out to some real "take the case..win the case..blood thirsty" lawyers and sue that entire department down to their fuccn soccs bc at this point the family could run that department better than them. Wtf purpose did they even serve at that point just standing by while the family searched the suspects living space. I couldn't imagine the cold eerie feeling the family must of felt from beginning to end actually standing in front of..confronting...searching and watching the EXACT MAN who kidnapped and killed their loved one..while he talked and acted so nonchalantly yet suspicious and creepy while the police didn't take it seriously enough soon enough..that family KNEW SOMETHING WASN'T RIGHT!! THEY KNEW MIYA AND HER CHARACTER ENOUGH TO KNOW MAN THIS GIRL IS MISSING AND SOMETHING BAD HAS HAPPENED TO HER WITHOUT A DOUBT..BUT THE PEOPLE THAT ARE SWORN TO DO SOMETHING BASICALLY TELL THEM..LETS WAIT A COUPLE BUSINESS DAYS OR UNTIL WE HAVE UNDENIABLE EVIDENCE THAT SHE IS DEAD BEFORE WE EVEN ATTEMPT TO LIFT A FINGER!!! GOD THAT BROKE MY HEART JUST THINKING ABOUT BEING IN THEIR SHOES AND THEN HEARING THE UNSETTLING AGONY IN THEIR VOICES AS THEY WATCHED THAT BASTARD PULL ITEMS THAT BELONGED TO MIYA OUT OF HIS CAR LESS THAN 30 MINS AFTER HE STOOD IN FRONT OF THEM WITH THAT CONFIDENT YET COCKY ASS "I DIDN'T DO SHIT" ATTITUDE. 😔MAY GOD GRANT MIYA ETERNAL PEACE AND REST WHILE GRANTING THE FAMILY COMFORT AND CLOSURE 😞
Right like what was the point of having the family search for the blanket? There’s video of him carrying it and I’m sure the family has at least one photo of it to prove that they match, at least passably. At that point, all they had to do was ask him where he took the blanket from the video, and if he can’t supply it it’s clear he’s hiding something.
@@Bugsyjr it’s crazy they didn’t consider him as a suspect and take him in for formal questioning even after finding out he was one of the last people to see her and they had some “relationship” (I use that term VERY loosely). That shocked me too. Everyone, don't go missing outside business hours. I know detectives want a normal schedule of work, but if it's taking up to 5 business days to assign one to a case, a second shift might be needed.
@ghostface3655 So many comments are saying "defund the police" is the problem, but that was just a cry for help and never hit policy in any country. Police funding has only increased. Others are saying police are lazy or corrupt and don't do their jobs, but I've seen too many examples of good police work to say it's a systemic problem, it is hard work. Go out and knock on some doors in your neighbourhood, see what response you get, then imagine you are wearing a uniform the community hates. I've knocked on doors as a Census worker, never had such hate directed at me just trying to gather statistics to provide the necessary services for an area. Do you need more childcare or hospitals? No one wants to talk and be civil to any federal or state employee. I think people want good, but that definition is troublesome because for many that is a religious definition and others it's philosophical. The hateful passages of biblical text vs what the intended message might be. Jesus would be too woke today and killed again. I'm not religious anymore, but I know all the books of the bible and I know they are filled with hate, except Jesus, he was a great guy. Just listen to him, says the atheist. In short, the Amercian dream is dead. - quote from Donald J Trump
Small towns are definitely like that which is why they have high unsolved murder rates lol its not funny however most crimes are committed after Hours bc by the time the cops arrive your soul is already with JESUS or SATAN meaning they give your pulse enough time to STOP bc after hours most of them be HOME snoring 😂😂😂😂 Out of town cops have 9-5, 5-1am shifts so just don’t get in trouble after 12am….I remember making a call for a dispute and the call got answered the next day…sometimes its an answering machine in certain places”

That security guard Jay is a man of absolute integrity. He deserves our respect.
He really does or he deserves head of security
Made me so mad hearing him say how he was getting mad cuz he had to do the detectives job
Oh he has all our respect!!
The security guard is ignorant of proper evidence collecting protocol. The police had no authority to collect fingerprints either and by collecting them the security guard made them worthless in court as they would not be admissible. He was well meaning but if he had been a good security guard he would have been more aware of a break-in.
Jay has a heart of a lion that is no question

This is what being family is about
The start I wasn't getting too much... did the family goto the management with their concerns? I know from the end they have a lawsuit against to apartments but I feel like the friends and family should have taken the info they had weeks before to the management instead of just asking for help from the friends as "what should I do"... My heart goes out to the family and the poor girl. The guy should have rotted in jail! We had a creepy maintenance person in our apartments that went to jail for doing the samething. The police failed too! Just a terrible and tragic story. It happens way too often it seems 😭

Maybe the information you have could help her family’s lawsuit. Further proof of the police department’s complete negligence.

When The People must take the law into their own hands. The Law failed this family. It failed The People as well.
@BiggestRedditor
First of all, take cases like this more seriously.
Yea make it make sense
That’s because they say a bunch of bs to get the cameras off them and that’s it
The level of incompetence shown by the police department is staggering. If a security guard is conducting a better investigation than the police, then the department needs an overhaul.
Even those other 2 officers who got there after the fact that werr walking & talking couldn't believe it!
The security man went above and beyond. I’m sure the family was so thankful for him when the police didn’t help. 😢

Man this family is the BEST. They fought for this girl. And never gave up. They did the police’s job and everyone else’s. The police should be ASHAMED of themselves.

If it was left to the police they wouldn’t have even moved on it for 48 hours, giving him more than enough time to get rid of vital evidence and even flee the state or country if he wanted to.

You can’t assume she’s just with friends or a bf without knowing anything about a person. The family know her and knew she wouldn’t just go AWOL without letting them know.
@@1972dsraithe 48 hrs pertain to after a body is found, not the case here, bigger failure by the apt complex to hire this guy and not lay down rules
It’s took them less then 24 hours to release missing persons case to the public. Pretty fast honestly

The police dropped the ball 110%, they blatantly didn’t give a rats ass about this poor lady.
@@allfaccsthey didn't have a warrant they asked him and he gave the family permission. So many people commenting on this video are dumber than a brick
The police and the dept. need to pay for this. This is disgusting.
People of colour probably
@JiahaoKoh-zl3yg everyone is "of color", it's the dark skin people like me that cause the most problems. I grew up with and witnessed it first hand.
@@JiahaoKoh-zl3ygSeriously wtf!?! If you don’t have have 2 🧠 cells to rub together, just Don’t! May her family find a way for peace. RIP 👼💙
What about the apartment complex owners/managers part in it? They provided the killer with keys.
It is not the police's fault when a crime is committed.
"They aren't open today..." ????? I didn't know that the police had bank hours, and they are closed during certain hours.....ARE THEY SERIOUS????
That shocked me too.
Everyone, don't go missing outside business hours. I know detectives want a normal schedule of work, but if it's taking up to 5 business days to assign one to a case, a second shift might be needed.
@@stevel205 I was honestly confused and shocked by that! How could that be?
😢
Small towns are definitely like that which is why they have high unsolved murder rates lol its not funny however most crimes are committed after Hours bc by the time the cops arrive your soul is already with JESUS or SATAN meaning they give your pulse enough time to STOP bc after hours most of them be HOME snoring 😂😂😂😂 Out of town cops have 9-5, 5-1am shifts so just don’t get in trouble after 12am….I remember making a call for a dispute and the call got answered the next day…sometimes its an answering machine in certain places”
Why are people so ignorant. First off, she should have totally ignored continued texts. Second ..WTH did she not share texts with the property MGMT and tell them she did not feel safe. I would have changed my locks ..lease be damned. Third...why not share her fear with family if she was that close to them??
