- Colin Crompton From 1974 to 1977 he was also the "club chairman" in another Granada programme,
The Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club.[1] An attempt by producer Johnnie Hamp to reproduce the atmosphere of the working men's clubs in a television studio,

Crompton was famous for ringing a hand-operated fire alarm bell and telling the audience to "give order" when making announcements from "the committee" in between acts. He wrote his own scripts, with occasional additions by Neil Shand. The MC for the show, Bernard Manning, claimed he was cast in the role because he "had been on The Comedians and he had that gormless look about him so he was ideal". - Розваги
Colin Crompton has long been due for reappraisal!! His trademark catchphrase and unique style of humour, brightened up many a Saturday night's television in the 70s!!😊
Exactly Adrian. Not to mention is wonderful hairstyle. He was a corker 😎
Wheeltappers and Shunters was made at Granada Studios in Manchester, and one was recorded at the Blackpool Layton Institute which is still going. Apparently the beer was free in that pretty good reconstruction of a Lancashire Working Men's Social Club. Liz Dawn (Vera Duckworth) started as a waitress on it. And 1960s singer Kathy Kirby, a big star, was on Wheeltappers in 1975. Cheers for the nostalgia, Alan.
Thanks a lot for all that interesting information. Eliot, are you about Liz? But I didn't know about the locations and the one that they are looked happy with the free booze. But it really did look like a working men's club 100%. Thank you my friend. Alan
@@MotorHomeBeepBeep No probs. Liz Dawn (stage name) MBE was a Leeds lass and a singer. She really did work on Wheeltappers as a waitress for a few episodes in the mid 1970s. The girls brought drinks to the tables. And George Roper was on Wheeltappers with Big Bernard around the same time. We met George again when he came over to Soest in Germany, about 1983/84, for a Combined Services Entertainment show. Nice bloke.
you do a lovey Job Alan you make me smile in a very sad world
Hello Jeff I'm so pleased. A little bit of happiness goes a long way to making the day good. Look after yourself my friend. Alan
Brings back a lot of memories. Colin used to say “meat pies have come!” I was in a band for several years and we used to say that into the microphones at sound check. 😅
That's great Adrian. Nice memories
😂 that's so funny 🤣.
One of my dads favourite shows
The committee! Mum and dad used to watch this, so I did too! Takes us back
I loved Colin.. he was the highlight of the show. R.i.p. sadly died too soon. Missed by us all x
Thanks for taking us along with you to Colin’s grave Alan. Done with great respect as usual. Talking about Colin brings back childhood memories for me. Take care lovely man.😘
It's always great to see you Judge there's nothing like a bit of reminiscing 👍
I was a young lad 15 years living in Scotland and he used to make me laugh as well a very funny man and such a young age to die keep the videos coming 👍👍👍👍
I remember The Wheel Tappers and Shunters Social Club! I watched it with my Mum. The show may have been controversial, but it undoubtedly paved the way for certain acts who became famous as a result of appearing on this!
Once again that's kind of you Adrian. It certainly was a unique style of the time which allowed improvisation which is always fun. Take it easy mate
@@MotorHomeBeepBeep Yes improvisational comedy, has long been a favourite of mine. And seeing this has revived so many "wonderful memories"!! Thanks for the reply, MotorHomeBeepBeep, and take care also!!
Thanks Alan yes I can remember watching Colin in wheeltappers as a kid he was so funny and very good humour and Alan I love the impression of Colin you done I did not realise he died at such a young age
Thank you Alan
Hello Karl yes it was terribly young but I think it was probably attributed to all the smoking causing lung cancer. If you look, he's always smoking when you see him in the clips. But there's an excellent job of reproducing, the working men's club atmosphere and like you, I still find it for me even today. Thank you my friend. It's always great to see you. Alan
I remember him and the programme well
I remember him very well, a very funny guy.
His mother lived in cadwgan Road ground floor flat...remember her well ..bless her ...❤❤
I remember that show and Colin very well as a kid. He was a very funny guy. I loved the comedians show too.
The comedians was punch after punch and good for the time. Thank you, Alan
@@MotorHomeBeepBeep its where our very own Frank ( Carson) made his name too.
Great video again Alan we were lucky growing up with some great shows .now its all reality shows
All the best, Dave
I remember that show he was a funny guy taken far too soon .. great tribute Alan .. 💙
Hello Debbie is some ways is the old days were the best days. Have a lovely day. Alan
I remember watching Wheeltappers and Colin was perfect in pulling the show together. I'm sure he did turns on The Comedians as well
Hi Genial he certainly was in the Comedians he could stand on stage and deliver a routine with ease. He was a hilarious character in wheel tappers thanks
thanks Alan. You're a smashing gentleman and i enjoy going on these trips with you,
User You've got a permanent seat on the bus. Thank you, Alan
We used to watch this when we stayed over at grans, I miss programming like this, on Saturdays it was play away and a good film, in the evening a good Dr who not woke, and dave Allen or this or, something for the family generation game God I miss those days
I always thought Colin Crompton was a naturally funny man. Sad that he isn't particularly remembered. Anyone growing up in the UK in the 70s would be familiar with The Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club, along with Colin Crompton's "On behalf of the committee...". Thanks for featuring this witty man. He was a guest on the 1970s chat show Tell Me Another, which is occasionally shown on the Talking Pictures TV channel, and was a very amusing raconteur.
His caricature of the club chairman was the classic but he was a lot clever in real life. Thank you for the wonderfully interesting comment.
Thank you, Alan. I remember both shows as a youngster. Take care
On behalf of the committee, thank you, Joy 😁
Nice to hear he's near Bernard. Order round the roooooom! 😂❤
I remember it well and used to love watching Wheeltappers and Shunters
Hello Chery it was an old fashion show and it was a long time ago as well, but it just give some fun memories for people that liked it. Thank you, Alan
Thank you Alan for doing this one as I have great memories of Colin and Bernard doing the wheel tappers.proper working men’s comedy and laugh a minute where the comedians back then not like now as it’s all woke and not allowed. Keep up the good work can’t wait for the next one 👏👏👏👍
PSY you are correct it is madness now everyone looking to make complaints when the aim of this was just life and it idiosyncrasies to all well done friend
My late father, thanks for the video.
Hello Jonny My very first reaction was I'm so pleased that you find it my little film respectful ☺️ if you would like to do a little interview to remember your father it would be a great pleasure, but if not no problem. Thank you ever so much alan. He was wonderfully funny 😂 07813779273 Best regards alan
Yep, I remember it! my late father used to love it I remember him laughing at Colin, great memory thank you, Alan 👏👏👏
Hi J I'm always so pleased really when it strikes a memory in people like you and your dad 💗 on behalf of the committee. Thank you, Alan
@@MotorHomeBeepBeep 😂
I remember him well. Well done ❤
🦋🦋🦋God bless Colin Crompton! Comedy at its finest🌼 Thanks Alan
Thanks for this Alan, I loved the comedians and like you say the working class humour, There's nothing that can touch it nowadays, The clip you put up made me laugh still, so goes to show how funny he really was, Colin also did The good old days which made that funnier. So glad he's buried near his friend Bernard who I also saw live, Once again great tribute Alan.
Hello Steve, exactly, it's very cute that they're both in the same spot. It must have been done by intention and the good old days we can still look back. Take care my friend Alan
Well done alan great video you are a breath of fresh air
R i p colin 🙏❤
Margaret You're a sweetie Alan

Great video, take care Alan 👏👏👏
Moggy you're the mate!
Oh sweet xloved him
Hello lovely man. Hope you are doing well. Ah yes, Colin Crompton! My Dad, ( who is 90, and thankfully healthy ) used to imitate Colin.
" Let's 'ear it for the Committee!". Cheers Alan 😘
Say hello to your dad from me. Jojo, thank you. Alan
Thanks ❤
Really enjoy your videos done with great respect for those that entertained us over many years. Gone but never forgotten ❤ from Sue and David in Bradford
Thank you Susan. Your engagement is much appreciated and we're both from Bradford 😊
I love your videos and the respect you show.
I also love your positivity.
Thank you Ben. It's lovely to meet you
I used to like it when he used to pretend the microphone wasn't working and he used to miss some words out. I'm sure it was Colin who did this. Another great video Alan. x
Hello Carol, I'm not sure if Colin did but definitely Norman collier did If you take a look at visited his grave. All the best, Alan
@@MotorHomeBeepBeep No, Alan now you mentioned it, you are correct it was Norman. Nevermind I still enjoyed the video. Looking forward to your next one.
Thanks Alan, on behalf of the committee! Anyway give order! Remember this from Colin, next turn on the bill, was on opportunity knocks a couple of weeks ago and as a result of is appearance he had three weeks worth of work cancelled. We couldn’t get out of his contract 😀
Very funny! User opportunity stop knocking 😅 see you later mate
Very funny! User so it was a case of opportunity. Stop knocking... Well in my case it never has knocked but never mind. Let's keep breathing. Thank you Alan
Hi Alan trust you are well I remember the wheel tappers and shunters club ( Colin Crompton) we dont get those types of club meetings today
Hi Hance it's become a more solitary internet Hideaway in your room world, which isn't a good thing. We need to meet each other 😉 all the best my friend, Alan
I remember him. I was a kid at the time. My Mum thought he was creepy!! Ha, ha. 😅
He was a bit -)
He was a very funny man RIP ❤️
it was the death of great characters like him that made us all aware of the dangers of smoking, bless him, one of my favourites too Alan.
That's very true David. People like this in a way. I did help highlight the problem and remember royal castle. He didn't even smoke but it was the smoke from the clubs. They said what to shame. Thank you my friend. Alan
Awe thanks Alan that brought me right back, only for yea you keep these old characters memories alive long before comedy became too P C Another great video ❤❤
Couldn't have said it better to myself Trisha I think the whole world is becoming PC
Hi alan i too remember colin in the wheeltappers and shunters club, he was so funny.
Thank you Wayne. Wasn't he hilarious? 😂
Used to watch some episodes in the past on satellite channel Granada Plus in the nineties.
They should put them on again from nostalgia and fun
Once again Alan another great video love the variety of places you go keep up the good work I love watching the videos when I can 👍🏻
That's very nice of you Adam. All the best mate
I remember him wasn't keen on him or anyone in the show he was in to be honest love from Holmfirth West Yorkshire 💙 💚
Super Gillian. I love your direct dismissal. You've got every right to not like it where are different? Much love to you, Alan
@MotorHomeBeepBeep it's just the show and the star's on it I wasn't keen on .nothing to do with your video. Hope I didn't offend you 💙💚
Another great video Alan. You mentioned Bernard Manning's grave, I intend to visit him at some point this year. Keep the videos coming buddy, best on UA-cam.
Hello! Graved days now you can make it 2 for the price of one and I could let you into a little secret. There's another one nearby shush 😉 I will try to run you down this year but not literally, thank you my friend. See you soon. Alan
Another great video Alan. I visited Tommy cooper's grave yesterday and am sorry to report that your flower was missing, not sure is it blew away, was taken or removed by the staff, but was very disappointed. Keep up the good work.
Hello John Thank you for telling me. I think the flowers do get removed. I hope you found it easily. One of the groundsman was sending me down the hill in the wrong direction. It didn't seem a was known about to a large degree among the staff hy. I hope you have the lovely visit. Very interesting. Alan
Yes Alan I knew where it was, I have visited that cemetery many Times.@@MotorHomeBeepBeep
Hi Alan, I remember watching Wheeltappers like you as a kid and enjoying it. I thought it was a real club at first!A lot of new up coming talent was featured on here. Thank you for another great visit and bio 👍
Hello Martin, I also thought it was a real club. All the people were so authentic. I think in a way while they were there they thought they were in the real club and it was a great place for showcase in the new guys. I agree 💯
A other brilliant video Alan keep them coming mate 👍.
Thank you John you have just recharged my batteries. All the best mate
Same to you Alan mate 👍.
Thanks Alan loved Colin crompton on wheeltappers very funny take care ❤️😊
Crystal, you're a gem Thank you, Alan
I suppose it's ironic that Colin "the committee" Crompton is buried in the same graveyard as his friend and Wheeltappers Social Club colleague Bernard Manning.
Both comedy legends in my book.
RIP Colin and Bernard.
Hi remember that show it was brilliant Colin was brilliant Allen 😂
Used to love that show there was some great act's on it 👍
I always give you a thumbs up Alan👍 love your channel you are so respectful and interesting when you take us, your subscribers down memory lane
Thank you Lilly. I love you for being so kind to another person ❤️ truly, thank you, 💓 Alan
The pies have arrived 👍Alan if your ever up Barnsley way, Bernard's friend, Charles Adolphus Williams, aka Charlie Williams, says he would like a visit
Thanks again Alan, I never realised Bernard & Colin were buried so close together, RIP Colin & Bernard, modern comics, if they can be called that, won't be missed when they pass on
Hello Waco yesterday in the same block A it must have been by design and not accident but I've done Charlie Williams his grave. If you want to take a look it's on the channel. On behalf of the committee, I want to thank you. We might put you forward as vice president. Take care, Alan
@@MotorHomeBeepBeep Sorry You have been to his grave, I've actually watched it commented on it last year, I''ll put it down to loosing my marbles lol
it happens to us all :-) @@TheWacoKid1963
Rest in peace
I liked watching Wheeltappers and Shunters Club .Hello Alan it is great watching your videos
Hello Marion and I like watching your comments so we're all happy. Seriously, thank you very much that sweet Alan
I remember the wheel Tappers.... RIP Colin...
I can't help wondering why all the straw is around the Christmas wreath? I was very young when he was on TV so he only seems vaguely familiar but can't help thinking Colin perhaps influenced later comedians like The Young Ones. Another great video.
Hello Jacqueline, I think it was a flower with long leaves that looks to have died off. Maybe it will regenerate in summer. It was a little bit unique was Collin I'm sure we did influence. Regards, Alan
Cant say I was a fan Alan, but you gave another respectful review- it looked rather cold that day mate! Take care x
Hello Carol, it was yesterday. It wasn't too bad. Take care of yourself. Alan
Never heard of this guy but great video Alan as always 🚙
Hi Nay on behalf of the committee, I just want to thank you for being a superstar 😎 wheel tappers was an old style stuff. I loved it as a kid. If you get a chance give it a go

Love your humour, its like mine,my humour keeps me going, even my specialists have commented on it, but my dad used to laugh his socks off at this guy, and was always shouting " on behalf of comittee" , nice one Alan, ( been extremely poorly, but specialist doctors sorting me, so got to catch up with your videos) but hey , hope your good and well , and yes mire funny guys please ❤
Hello Wendy, you need a specialist but you also need to be happy so I do hope you can enjoy some humour and give yourself the strength. Keeping touch and thank you for writing. I wish you the very best. Alan
Cracking vlog Alan, loved the Shunters.
If you're back up at Ponden Mill give us shout and we can go for a pint at a local of mine in Haworth 👍

Nice 1 Alan I never heard of him but I do now . Was he just a 1 line character that got him through in life . On behalf of the committeeee 😆. Anyway keep the videos coming love your perspective on them 😉.
Hello Ben 👋 on behalf of the committee. See you later mate
Love it, love it, love it.
Hello Ben, no he wasn't. He was a comedian. He'd starred in the TV show. Call the comedians and he did a George Formby type of singing act. He was quite versatile. He just stuck to that part on wheel tappers. Anyway, I've got to go the meat pies have arrived 😉
I would love to know more about who his mum was x
❤
On behalf of the committee. Thank you, Joy
I really think a flat cap should have been worn during the making of this but still very good .just the same
You would say that I recognise this name. You were Mr. Cromptons chauffeur.... Brum Brum🚗
Striking resemblance with Frank Skinner.
I was just thinking the same
I'd never thought of that. I agree. I like Frank he wrote one of the best autobiographies I've read.
@MotorHomeBeepBeep
Yes, his life stories are funny.
Obviously Frank is still alive but just like Frank i myself feel buried every Saturday at the Hawthorns...haha...yea,ok,ill get my jacket.
Me need to meet, I love u xx
Not as much as I love you ❤️
Love your videos,thanks.
Saw Colin Crompton live in 1974 on my 18th birthday at the old Talk of Yorkshire in Bradford, absolutely brilliant!
