Slip Away James Govan Rum Boogie Cafe

James didn't like people to record his music so it was a few years before he would allow me to "sneak" footage of his Rum Boogie Cafe performances. Slip Away originally by Clarence Carter in 1968. I like how James references the local hotel chains in the song. I stayed at the Admiral Benbow Inn while on a trip to Memphis and Beale in the late 80's. Glad I survived.

I had the pleasure of meeting him in November of 2004, while staying in Memphis for a week. We enjoyed him and the guys so much we went back to Memphis the following weekend right after returning back to Missouri just to grab our best friends to come back with us! I got to hold the steering wheel a few times during Mustang Sally! We were there every night that James play for like 3 weeks. We were all on a first name bases before we went back home and stayed. Then we heard he passed! I am so greatful for meeting him! It was one of the best times in my entire life!!!

Great song, delivered so soulfully. You know that old line about “I’d listen to him sing the phone book?” That’s basically what he’s doing at the end here, and I would gladly listen to it… all night long. RIP.

one of the funniest things i ever got to see was some 20 yr old white kid trying to be so cool & asked James, hey man...........pronounced haay main. Ya'll do any aerosmith? James had the best reply. Boy. you're in Memphis. We don't play that shit here.
enjoyed hearing this band very much. they were all good. Bill Cedric Don...........especially James. thanks for the memories.
