And this is why you are my favourite you tube guitarist. Thank you for all the great content. You have an impeccable taste in music and are a fantastic teacher.
Adrian. If the Banshees ever do one of those reunion tours where they play Kaleidoscope, Juju and A Kiss in the Dreamhouse in their entirety, I hope they have your number. I have heard lots of players cover John Mcgeoch over the last 40 years and I've never heard anyone get as close as you in these videos in sound, tone, style, technique and that smooth and fluent way he played. You are paying him a great tribute.
I've actually heard lots of times their post-McGeoch guitarists didn't even play them this well (or even correctly). Hopefully there won't be any reunion tours though, Siouxsie's voice is well and truly shot unfortunately
Yup. It's one thing to be able to play the stuff, but how did he ever come up with those riffs and ideas. Its great being able to deconstruct those songs and appreciate the detail...
From the dreamy and iconic intro riff to haunting arpeggiated chords absolutely unforgettable guitar work and sadly almost forgotten…thanks Adrian for the deconstruction of this little piece of genius by the late and great J McG.
Great work! I think McGeoch had only a flanger pedal, otherwise he used his Rolnd Jazz Chorus 120 amp to get chorus, and a tube amp (I don't remember which one, maybe Vox AC 30) to get overdrive. Please do other Cure, Banshees, Bauhaus songs and also some Bunnymen, Sisters of Mercy, The Mission, The Church, Cocteau Twins, Bad Seeds/Birthday Party...
Brilliant song and representation of it, the Banshees around this era were so blessed musically with both McGeoch and Budgie being arguably the most talented guitarist and drummer respectively of that generation. 'Kaleidoscope' thru to 'A Kiss in the Dreamhouse' are just incredible as examples of how to record powerful rock music yet not turn everything up to 11, and for me tha'ts almost 100% down to those two and knowing the golden rule of music that when everything's loud, nothing is loud.
Incredible song. Great guitar on it too. I read Mark King Of Level 42 said that he was influenced by McGeoch and the repeated guitar loop on “Children Say” was a nod to him. Brian May of Queen also mentioned his playing in an interview in the early 80s.
Adrian Hearty Thanks, I loved your JD's she lost control now this is epic follow up. I really appreciate the efforts for making these treasures I love to see more darkwave post-punkish songs in future (echo and the bunnyman maybe) Cheers! have a great day!
You've given me a new appreciation for John McGeoch over the past several months. Thanks so much for all the Banshees/Magazine/etc tutorials on this channel! :)
Annnnnd you’ve taken me back to when I was 15. Yet again another amazing piece of music legend brought back to life faithfully and brilliantly. By far and away the best guitar teacher on UA-cam IMHO. Excellent work Adrian 👍🏻
Being an old git, I have a 1979 Yamaha SG1000. Unlike the Eastwood, it has coil taps by push-pulling the tone controls (but that's probably incidental). The MXR Flanger is crucial to the sound. Nothing else sounds like that pedal. McGeoch used to have it on a stand, where he could move the controls duiring a performance. I particularly remember a live version of 'Voodoo Dolly' where he used it to manipulate a frightening and epic sound. I had one and (story of my life) I really regret selling it. But at least I still have the Yamaha.
Adrian without your channel idk if I would have maintained my interest in guitar. You hear this from so many I’m sure but your music selection is very refreshing and very in line with the genres I enjoy. Would you ever consider doing something from Modest Mouse’s ‘The Lonesome Crowded West’? I feel like it’s right up your alley and Isaac Brock’s aggressive, rhythmic playing on that record is a big inspiration to me. Just a humble suggestion :) love the channel and your choices are always prime.
I just picked up a MXR micro flanger and used your settings from the gear review when playing this song. It only has control over speed and regen but it sounded pretty darn close! Great song choice and lesson!
Hi Adrian, once again a great lesson. It's amazing to have someone showing post-punk guitar broken down. Have you thought about doing a sort of 'top x post-punk guitar techniques' video? Cheers, J
Absolutely brilliant deconstruction. This song alone demonstrates the brilliance and genius of John McGeoch. The best incarnation of the Banshees after John McKay and Jenny Morris left. Mark 1 Banshees were fantastic but John McGeoch took them to another level.
Love your tutorials buddy, love most of all how you focus your attention on a lot of new wave sort of stuff. One of my favourite genre's of all time. Keep up the great work 👍🤘
Dear Adrian, your choices are gold and I really appreciate what you are doing, very rare stuff. Thank you.. I love "Scarecrow" by Siouxsie and the Banshees, what a wonderful outro it has. Unfortunately, no tabs on the net, would love if you can bring this classic alive and teach us how to play it
Hi Adrian, i just have to write you a few lines to show you my appreciation for your work it is so amazing how you get into the song, so much love for the detail and georgously played. You are such a great help to play the songs i ever loved, thank you :)))
Thanks for this..The work Robin Simon did with Ultravox: Maximum Acceleration, Slow Motion etc. might be another interesting guitarist to cover in this genre!!
Thanks sir. After a year, I can now play Spellbound faily smoothly thanks to you. Strangely I found Halloween relatively easy, even that stretch. This is instant fun. A song that caught my child ear even as a Sabbath and Purple fan. May I suggest that charming ditty Nightshift from Juju as a future lesson. I love how the chords and bass interact, but I have never figured it out.. cheers.
Thanks so much for this. I've always loved John McGeoch playing so have played this for years. I find the second three harmonics are better played on the B and E strings 7th fret then the B 9th fret (plucking close to the bridge). Rings much clearer! Thanks again!
Thanks Pat. Yes, I agree those 9th fret harmonics are tough to get to ring properly. It seemed to me from videos that JM was playing them at the 9th fret, so I went for that. Your way is probably better though!
McGeoch used two amps, which solves your problem. He used a Roland jazz chorus with a Marshall. This helped give him, along with his flanger, ( Which he always had perched on the top of a Mic stand), and the built in Jazz chorus, chorus sound, his unique sound.
Great work again Adrian. Sorry you won't be doing more Big John for a while but I'm sure you'll find something else good. Still the best guitar lessons on UA-cam and the best possible taste.
Great job Adrian! You nailed that tone. Have you thought about doing some Echo & The Bunnymen before? I think Will Sergeant is one of the great unsung post-punk guitarists.
Hi Adrian, love the channel especially the John McGeoch stuff. How about doing a video on Robin Guthrie's work with the Cocteau Twins and maybe Will Sergeant's work with Echo and the Bunnymen. Keep up the amazing content.
I jut love those Siouxie/Mc Geoch tutos you do.. They are Ze best on UA-cam! I figured he would use the bridge pickup because since it's a dark sounding guitar, it would sound to muddy with all those effects on the middle or neck positon.. Nowadays with the level option it's possible to avoid as you mention the overwhelming blurry effect and loss of definition of the Flanger by rolling down the level..
Adrian I’ve been trying to get guitar teachers on UA-cam to do a how to play “Industrial disease” by dire straits but nobody wants to try it , so why don’t you give it a go , it’s a brilliant song , no solos at all but you need to get the effects nailed and you are really good at doing this , please try this one Adrian , you’ll be the first person on the internet to get it down .
And this is why you are my favourite you tube guitarist. Thank you for all the great content. You have an impeccable taste in music and are a fantastic teacher.

@@mindtpi I know Robert Smith has said he couldn’t figure out some of the things McGeoch was doing on those albums.
There was a reunion in 2002...
Absolutely 🇬🇧 💯 genuinely 👍 1980s! 💰 masterpiece ✨️ 😍
been doing the intro wrong all these years. Evertime I learn a McGeoch song my admiration of him grows. They always seem so imaginitive and effective
Yup. It's one thing to be able to play the stuff, but how did he ever come up with those riffs and ideas. Its great being able to deconstruct those songs and appreciate the detail...
@@angularsquare8757 My thoughts exactly
There has been a biography published last year
@@dinastanford7779 Thanks. I'll keep an eye out for it. There was a radio programme on him as well which is somewhere on youtube. cheers
BBC 6 music 📻 🎙 John mcgeoch
From the dreamy and iconic intro riff to haunting arpeggiated chords absolutely unforgettable guitar work and sadly almost forgotten…thanks Adrian for the deconstruction of this little piece of genius by the late and great J McG.
Just killer. You tackle all the songs that the other UA-cam guitar teachers don't have on their radar. Brilliant!
What a coincidence. I was listening to this album in its entirety for the first time just today. Thank you.
Great work! I think McGeoch had only a flanger pedal, otherwise he used his Rolnd Jazz Chorus 120 amp to get chorus, and a tube amp (I don't remember which one, maybe Vox AC 30) to get overdrive. Apparently, he rigged his flange to a mix stand so he could adjust it while playing. I’ve also read that he used compression along with the flanger.

What a tune. What a riff. McGeoch was a legend.
I see you're playing my next guitar that I don't need. Nice!!!
Goosebumps ! As soon as those few notes are struck your hooked , so underated band and riff maker , Classic
Love it love that guitar Love McGeoch
Love your channel
Are you kidding me! Insanely brilliant man, nice song choice and execution. Keep 'em coming
Thanks for the great lessons. You have good taste in music and are a great teacher. Congrats on getting the SG1000 copy as well. Nice guitar.
I was waiting for you to get around to doing this one Adrian... Brilliant as usual, thanks!
Cheers, Adrian-your ear and attention to detail are fantastic.
Some more Magazine please, thanks brilliant as always 👍👍👍
Loving the new McGeoch book by Rory Sullivan-Burke. Thanks for featuring this astounding guitarist, as well as Feeding Back.
Whats the book, please?
Adrian you are the man, love the banshees im gonna learn this one, spellbound lesson was spot on too, thanks
Another fantastic musical journey. You're easily the best for traversing those paths rarely trodden.Hat off to you,my man.
Meant to add: Sweet new guitar! Glad to see companies giving things to you -- fully deserved!
Incredible song. Great guitar on it too. I read Mark King Of Level 42 said that he was influenced by McGeoch and the repeated guitar loop on “Children Say” was a nod to him. Brian May of Queen also mentioned his playing in an interview in the early 80s.
A band I played in 86-89 used to play this to soundcheck, I can count on one hand the number of Banshees songs I really like and this one of them.
Awesome! Definitely the best guitar channel around. Great taste in music.
Any chance of a Cocteau Twins lesson? :D
Seconded, something like “In our Angelhood”
I remember buying this - does that make me old? Great lesson Adrian!

just the best on the tube - great song choice - clear well-paced teaching and how to dial in the sounds - amazing stuff - cheers Adrian

Amazing lesson and performance, as always, Adrian! Some really interesting and uncommon sounds and techniques in this one, so cool.
I swear sometimes you have a window into my mind. Just been on a major Banshees binge and then you drop this right in my lap.
I was just thinking exactly the same thing (only about my mind not yours obviously 😉).
Superb again.. my challenge for this week sorted..

I never knew how important John McGeoch was to my appreciation of music until you kept showing me. Why are there no t-shirts of this man?
Thanks Adrian, especially quick rundown of the pedals you used, a lot of you tubers, are frustrating when it comes to affects...

Not a guitar player but I find your videos fascinating. McGeoch was, too. Love this classic!
Great job! Brilliant to see this. Really clear concise and accurate video. Top playing as well.🙏🏼
Always fantastic! Your approach to teaching is on-point, as far as I'm concerned.
the sg is such a beautiful guitar

This song almost defines 'post-punk' - great lesson!
Wow. Thanks mate. I never knew about all the harmonics.

Where were you when i was 16, ffs :/? Anyway I love your channel, please do more Rowland S. Howard things!
More velvets, please! Sister ray noise riffs, or maybe interesting strumming in "run run run"?

God bless you 🙏 ❤
Nice. Thanks Adrian.
The best Tube tutor out there!
I Love this song!!😍😍😍😍😍
Fantastic! You are the best! Thank you!
Genius track and brilliant lesson
live, McGeogh used a Roland Jazz Chorus and a Marshall 50w plexi combo, so a wet/dry recording setup is quite likely
Great!! Thanks Adrian!!
Great lesson and great guitar, I have a Yamaha SG1000 Reissue but your Eastwood is gorgeous
YES! Thanks Adrian!
enjoyed it, interesting insight on the flanger.
LOVE this song! Thank you!

Always love your videos! That Eastwood is very cool, obviously modeled on the Yamaha SG2000 - how does it play in comparison?
Great as always. One question though. What do you use to program your drum tracks ?
Can you have a look at “Perfume Garden” by the Chameleons next?
One of the best songs of all time!!!!!
