I own this camcorder for almost 3 years at this moment and I am really satisfied! Why I chose camcorder over a DSLR?
It's simple: although DSLR's make awesome videos nowadays, back in the days, cameras was used for pictures and camcorders were used for videos. Now in the age of technology, it's all combined together, both DSLR's and camcorders can make photos & videos, but the base stays the same.
If you are a filmographer or a videomaker, camcorder will offer you more cinematic & filmmaking tools than DSLR (as far as I know). I love setting shutter speed, aperture and gain with the immediate view, how the shot looks like, some DSLR's don't have such an option.
There is also zebra function, showing you overexposed areas, which helps me make perfect shot and even though you cannot change lenses, this camcorder with great zoom is like 18-55mm & 50-100mm lenses combined, which saves you time and you have both already "installed". And camcorder looks more professional in terms of aestetics.

Yes.. but most of Sony's DSLRs overheat and shut down. Something this AX100 will never do.

Thanks for the video. In 2021 I just bought this camera and it ROCKS!! Image quality is BETTER than the a6400 w/ kit lens, the ZV-1, and of course the AX43(yes Ive had all 3). I got mine last week and it outputs a GREAT 30P 4k image over HDMI in the studio to OBS. Green screen image is CLEAN and I couldn't be happier with the colors. As a one-man production team, having access to the camera controls from my desk is essential and the AX100 delivers 1000%. Unlike the Sony Camera, this puppy does not overheat!

Started with one AX100 in 2014, now have 7 of them (bought most of them 2nd hand). Fantastic camera's for recording musicals, concerts etc. The lack of bokeh is superb if you want to catch a whole stage. Battery life is + 4 hours, no 30 minutes-limit to video etc. My 2 AX700 camera's should be superior, but need more light to get the same picture.

Also, the built-in microphone is surprisingly good! +When filming in 4k mode if the lighting is good I can just take snaps of frames and then scale them up and use them as photos very handy if no flashes are allowed or you don't want to ruin the concert with shutter noises!

I have one of these, and it does well for what it is. I've never had any trouble with 100mbps 4k, and I'm using Sandisk U3 cards. For low-light, I recently purchased NeatVideo, and that makes it SO MUCH BETTER. The biggest problem I've run into is that there's some AF noise when in a quiet environment.

How would this work for filming hunting, fishing videos? It sounds like low light is one of its week points but it was hard to tell if it was beyond shooting time which is usually sunrise or sunset in your demonstration.

I like this camcorder. I needed a good 4k camcorder for my trip to Portugal back then so I went with this one. One thing I wish it had is steady-cam gimbal stability. My footage was sharp and great. .just a little shakey when I was running from the bull in the streets.

I have this camera and I love it! You have to use a U3 card to get the 100mbps to work. The lens on it is soo sharp! I put a little shotgun mic on mine. You're right, it thrives on a tripod.

Nice general review. Thank you! I just found your site and subed. ;>D
I bought one of these used a year ago and got some amazing outdoor video. I paired it a new Raynox 2.2x Telephoto conversion lens to increase the zoom magnification to 39.6x, allowing me to get some amazing video of birds on my backyard feeder. I also have used this combination last summer to film from mountain tops in NH where I'm able to identify hiker's clothing from nearly 1.5 miles away. Like any camcorder at 40x, you need to block the wind to keep it steady.
I just filmed my first wedding in a large NYC catholic church in full auto mode and it performed stellar! I hope to learn how to use a few of the manual features before my next wedding shoot late April.

Good review, but this camera is absolutely not worth the money. I finally bought a Lumix G7, which is far cheaper, and the quality is drastically better now + same specs on 4k + information per second. The issue is both low light AND the lack of bokeh makes this not worth it in 2020.

Its not bad, I have 2 ax100 cameras, just dont blow it out, og go anywhare near where it blows, it does it i crazy way where the green and red blows before the blue, it makes super strange clolors just before it blows. (Just like you see in this film, this is how NOT to use it). Also you have to use the Soft Key shooting mode, or turn down the contrast, or it will blow nomatter what you do, and make it look absolutely horrific.

FTH PROD Both 100 & 700 only hv usual active steady shot in 4K. Intel active in HD only. AX53 has BOSS (Balanced Optical Steady Shot) where the lens itself is floating on its own in built type of gimbal.
Loads of info on youtube or google. I use warp stab in Adobe Premiere Pro 2017 to add stabilisation to my movies in post even when using AX53 as never take a tripod on my trips abroad. Better image quality on AX100 & AX700 has HDR too. Think they basically capture approx 14mp video and downscale to 4K (approx 8.1mp without any pixel loss/binning). AX53 has wider lens & captures 4K res of 8.1mp only. I have both AX53 and AX100. Chk my videos for samples ! Hope this helps.

@@markgwinnell7259 very informative thank you so much, I am filming a lot with my dslr cameras and the panasonic lx100 (4:3 sensor) which offers a very cinematic picture for the size but is extremely bad for tracking kids in action, so I mainly use it when they play slowly or for documentaries (work). I loved the ease of shooting video with a camcorder and own a Canon HV30 that I barely use any more (the picture was good back in the time but is not great today) so I am looking for a new solution with good AF tracking, stabilisation, and excellent picture quality (1 inch sensor or a bit bigger) so the AX53 packs a smaller but dedicated 4K sensor with no pixel binning ? Why did Sony choose to pack the AX100 and AX700 with 20MP and 14MP 1 inch sensors instead of a nice 8MP 1 inch sensor ? Is there any solution that reunites a dedicated 1 inch (or larger) sensor with a nice stabilized BOSS lens ?

Hey bud, do you have other prosumer cameras that you use for comparison? I have had this camera for years... I dont know if it has improved, but I have the same model number and I am scratching my head at your review (good job on your presentation, though). This has to be the crummiest image out of every camera I own. -The reason I would guess that people look up your video is to see if they are doing something wrong because of the horrible image. -I really only notice it indoors on a studio set (in real daylight, outdoors, it looks decent). You might think its an issue of being under-lit but I am talking about a professionally lit studio. I am going to try it today with the gain no higher than 3 and putting the rest on automatic. I can tell you that with the aperture at 2.8, 24p, and 48 shutter speed it was garbage. I wouldn't even use this camera for a skype interview it is so bad. Anyway, the reason I am writing this is to get your take a few months later and/or to see if you have used it in a more professional setting and/or what other cameras you might have for comparison. I'll put up some video, just for a frame of reference, but please please let me know if I am missing something because I'm about to sell this on ebay for $500 and get ANYTHING else. Thanks for making the video and for any additional information.

4k footage. you'll need the mini SD cards that kick **s . . .And in this day n age, you can get micro sd cards at 256gb capacity that can do 4k footage.

Uh, the price is *not* dropping. I keep looking for this camera on eBay and Amazon, and it's *still* running anywhere from $1,200 to $1,600. I was at least lucky enough to find the HDR-CX560 for about half price a couple of years ago, but I can't find the FDR-AX100 anywhere at a reasonable/affordable price.
