The Everyday Dad oh hell yeah! You read my mind! Glad I’m a subscriber of this channel! Also another reason why you’ll be in my video of top camera reviewers 💪🏼👍🏼
It's the difference between a recording system that requires attention and attendance and a get-the-job-done camcorder. A camcorder such as this is easy for times when you have zero set up time, or for events that need to give you a consistently good image, not necessarily a great image. Sure, put these in the dark, and there's trouble in Paradise. Everything has compromises. Having the ability to hook up to pro audio is part of the appeal as well; even better is using Sony wireless mics that just hook up so damn easily. I've used Sony and Canon camcorders for a while now for both fun and profit and they are robust and produce a good result without faffing about. One more thing, the ergonomics of a camcorder makes handheld use very easy - zoom rockers are so easy to use and you don't notice how good they are until you don't have them. There are many ways to a result. I'm still amazed with the image my little GoPro Hero 6 gives. I'm just happy with how far we've come since the Sony PD150 days.
I am a dad who makes UA-cam videos. I've found that I need 2 setups. For shows like shot show I use a dslr for long battery life and a 10mm wide angle lens for all the booth interviews. For SEMA I need a 3 axis gimbal camera....period. So I'm still using my old Canon 70D for shot show and a gopro hero 4 silver in a feiyutech 3 axis gimbal for SEMA. I do want to ditch the dslr though for a camcorder. I'm tempted to buy this sony.
Bought a FS700 many years ago and have loved it. Minimal grain increase at high ISO's.

Onwe big advantage that you didn't cover. No recording limitation or interruption. As vlogger and UA-camr we might have forgot since we don't record long lenght clips. But to record a complete show and have a good studio cam... that would be better that a DSLR.
I've been using the Sony FRR-AX53 4k Sony Camcorder for my main camera for 2 years. I am constantly asking the same question you did, why don't more people use camcorders?
I think it might be because people aren't professional enough and there have been some stereotypes set by some of the low-end camcorders. I've seen people commenting on a smartphone photo looking better than one from a proper camera and I had to tell them that's because smartphones generally have better screens than cameras 🤦🏻♂️
If it had interchangeable lens and good low light it would be a nice option. When you said the price, I thought how many Canon M50 with a speedbooster I could get instead of this!
For different apertures! As an example, my standard 15-45mm at 22mm is at F4 while my 22mm is at F2! Maybe you don't like different apertures, obviously many are or else there wouldn't be so many different lenses. :)
its not expensive, at least not more than a6300 or a6500....pick up any body for a 1000$, and add another 1000$, or maybe more, for a zeiss lens, then another 400-600 for the audio controls, and there you are, you just got a total of almost 3000$, with plus and minus of one system over the other....so, obviously, it s not a matter of price, but different usability...
drop tests always puzzle me, they make as much sense as "can you test if I leave it in the oven?" or "what if my horse steps on it?" it's an electronic, not a basketball, LOL
As a dad myself, I always have problems fitting everyone into the group video. The camera has a 29mm-348.0mm equivalent lens and that’s not enough when I’m shooting in tight spaces. I think it would be great if you could recommend or do a feature on screw-on wide angle converters. I’ve bought one but was sorely disappointed and threw it away. It was 0.7x wide but 2/3 of the image around the center became soft and had the purple fringes. It also made zoom useless because the camera wouldn’t focus at anything other than full wide. I believe thousands of dads around the world need a good quality wide angle lens that they can screw onto their cameras
Capacity, clarity expression a unique intellect, this is not a critique, it is a recognition of a gifted mind. A man pointing out an avalanche of ignorance and the ignorant consumed by their own ideas not listening forcing the sane among us to stop them before they kill all of us, including themselves.
From a glance in the specs it seem to also have some live streaming features. If you do a lot of live streaming for events this seems to be a big step up from a mobile phone.
@8:10 you mentioned about gain sensitivity. May I ask, exactly how much are you talking about? I mean is the gain good at 15db ? Also, may I ask, how long the battery lasts in this camera in a single charge for continuous recording? Thanks in advance.
I looked at several camcorders, but ultimately went with a Panasonic FZ2500. Its a video beast. Unlimited recording time. Built in ND filters. Stabilization. 4k @ 60fps. Mic input and headphone out. Lots of video output options. And massive zoom if needed. In short, a bunch of cool features that I wanted. It's my "studio" camera, but it is so much more. I think everybody needs one just to experience the versatility. It's basically a GH4 with a super-zoom lens permanently attached.
I can't see noise at all @7:48 for the indoor shot. Perhaps UA-cam's algorithms compress out all the noise? The indoor footage looks great so I'm assuming the noise straight out of camera is still really fine and minimal.
That looks much like my Sony FDR AX-100 4K camcorder, that I absolutely LOVE! Mine also shoots great-quality photos, and I'd imagine yours does, too. It has so many advantages over a still camera, including the built-in ND filters. And it will shoot a Paris Hilton video in complete pitch-black darkness.
stig I meant that the maximum iris (f2.8) is only available at the wide end. As you zoom in this falls back to f4.5 as previously mentioned. This is necessary to keep the lens more compact. For it to be able to achieve f2.8 at maximum focal length it would need to be a lot larger. Of course if you set the lens to f5.6 it should stay there throughout the zoom range.
I got it last summer, posted some videos on my page from it, and I have to say it's a wonderful tool for the quick get up and go camera! There's also modifications to picture profiles that I've found do a great job in removing noise at higher ISOs, even before any colour grading
Now if Sony will ever come out with a successor to the NEX VG-900 that has similar features. That was a GREAT camcorder. It was A full frame interchangeable lens camcorder. It was a low light beast. It was way ahead of its time. Unfortunately for Sony most do not like camcorders.
Great GREAT review! I use a Sony CX900 now for my UA-cam videos and am looking for a 4K upgrade. This NX80 is the exact same form factor as the CX900, but apparently with vastly improved features. I was considering moving over to a DSLR, but all the rigging and contortions that are required for video on still cameras sent me back to the camcorder. I shoot outdoor train videos mostly so I don't have much use for "bokeh" or low-light sensitivity to get Buffy and Biff cutting the cake by candlelight and all that stuff that DSLRs do so well. I want a run-and-gun video machine and this looks like it'll be my choice. Plus, $2300. is a good price for a camera this good. Thanks!
This is so crazy cause I literally pulled out (2 months ago) an older Sony HandyCam HDR-PJ790V and attached a mic (Rode) and thought it was awesome. I get so caught up with the latest tech/gadgets that I completely forgot about the camcorder devices. Don't get me wrong, latest products are phenomenal but HandyCams are still great too. This video reminds us (well at least me) that you can create anything (commercial, movie, news and etc.) using camcorders. Thank you and keep up the great work.
I’ve been using camcorders since 1990. I recently started using the M50 as I venture into the world of UA-cam. I love the DOF achieved with a DSLR or mirrorless, but camcorders have their place. Especially for long form recording (and try to do a slow crawl zoom with a DSLR). Not everything needs that “cinematic” look, right? Thanks for the great review and content!
The NX80 is all I use for basketball highlight videos in 1080p @ 120fps I make. Wish it had BOSS like on my AX33 but, overall it's perfect for my needs.
Did you add sharpening in post? Some of your sample clips look oversharp on my TV. I was looking at this but went with the Canon XF 400 for the 4k 60 fps. A camcorder is really nice for this stuff. Really love having one again.
How did that go? I have the FDR-AX53 and I'm thinking of upgrading as well, maybe to this or to the AX700. Money is something I need to take into account. But money aside, because of what I do, I also need to take physical dimension into account (the smaller the better) so I'll have to see
I love the idea of a camcorder. The lenses cover so much focal range! If they made a APS-C or full frame sensor camcorder they would sell like crazy, sure you’d lose some reach but everyone wants that shallow depth of field.
0:45 I felt like that when I bought a Canon Vixia HF R800 Camcorder. Also, you might want to consider reviewing it, it's a great value for the price! Love your videos!
Nice video! If you have time, what Picture Profile do you use and other settings when filming indoors? I haven't been able to nail down the right combo of settings... Thanks in advance.
I own both the sony a7iii and the ax700, I use the ax700 as a studio camera and the a7iii for photos and low light video which it does crush the ax700 but that's expected coming from a full frame sensor. That being said the ax700 is my go to camera I love it for video and ease of use.
I'm not sure how much longer you will be able to keep saying "I am not a pro". You have produced so many videos on so many different cameras and tech, you ARE becoming a bit of a pro!
@@onechippyboi lol like I said you are welcome to you opinion. I however have too much respect for Gary to have an argument in his comments so I'll end it here. Have a good day!

@@TheEverydayDad You are humble to say that and I expected nothing less from you. Ignoring folks that like to argue about semantics, I will even say you are creeping up on being a subject matter expert when it comes to the types of cameras used by creators. I already know for a fact some other creators come to you when they have camera questions! I've been doing photography/videography as my sole income for 10 years and I know if I had a question about something I was filming for youtube I wouldn't hesitate to seek out your advice!
so I'm in the process of starting my own LLC for video production and ive been watching you video for reviews and love them.... then i saw the OSU hat..... you now have a new subscriber. if possible is they away to DM you to talk about your opinion on the NX80 vs the PXW-z90? Also is there a newer and better camera then those two?
I have a Fuji X-T3 and over a dozen lenses, but I also picked up a used Sony AX100 for Au$1,250 (roughly US$875). It is virtually the same as the NX80 without the handle and with a single SD slot. Just like you said, it is the easiest camera to use. I splashed out for the Sony wireless lav kit and the Multi Function shoe adaptor. This allows for cable free wireless mic usage and you can choose to buy the single channel or the dual channel mic kit. Yes, they are not cheap, but boy do they add value! You can also use them with any other camera too. The only other recommendation other than a good size SDXC card(s) is the largest genuine Sony battery. Camcorders also don't have the pesky 30 mins recording limit, so they are great for recording events, talks and conferences. If you really need XLR then you can buy a chepo dual channel pre-amp, but seriously, why would you? Like you, you can attach a Rode Videomic Pro, or an afore mentioned wireless kit without going down the XLR route. Oh, and if you put a shoe mounted LED video light, you are really rockin'.
Add a Dad + a Camcorder WINNING post - Thank you for taking the time to review. It's a bit like doing a review of an RV/ Camper Van - Us Dad's love the idea but the use we would get might raise some questions from the wife! lol. I LOVE the fact that Sony are still developing tech and using it in camcorders plus conventional 'photo' cameras and the NX80 is an entry point for their pro series which at the top end have interchangeable lenses and in between have G lenses. For events and weddings I would love to have one in the bag, but my A7 with a bag of lenses, monitor, lights etc gives me better flexibility - plus the A7 is soooo upgradable for lens range once funds become available etc. BUT I would still like an NX80 as a gadget if I could sneak it into the house :-)
Would love to get one but I got the Panasonic HC-X1. The Sony is not expensive. If you get all the accessories for a Dslr you are there. I love my X1 the only thing is that I want a larger sensor. Have an amazing Sunday, Andreas from Off Grid Sweden 🇸🇪
@@TheEverydayDad thanks for the reply man, yeah it's amazing how jam packed that little camcorder is with features. but for now I'm probably still gonna save for a full frame DSLR, even though DSLRs still don't have SDI.
How do you pull the video files off the Camera via usb and the SD card plugged in? I am able to pull the SD card out and put in a separate read on the computer but not from the camera. Just gives me a couple of folders with some documentation and no video files?
Lol in Saudi Arabia they use more then 5 cameras each one worth more than a250K USD to stream some sheiks talking about islamic stuffs. Religion u know xD
The Sony FDR-ax100 is a better value. It has most of the features of this camcorder at a cheaper price. If you don’t need the pro audio handle, check out the ax100.
I use a Sony AX53 with Rode Videomicro and it's a really nice for outdoors content. Lots of times it can be found on sale for 800ish. For just pure making video content it's really hard to beat. Plus not that heavy and compact. Not sure I would pack a NX80. Looks a bit much for my pack and hard to justify the cost at this time. For me anyways. I did spend the 35 bucks for a B&M digital clear filter to protect the lens and flaps. Wouldn't survive the woods without it. Nice video.
Best review of the NX80 I've seen, and I love your style Gary. Thanks for all the hard work putting this together. I recently started shooting our trailer sailing adventures. There is no way I am going to risk my high-end DSLR bodies & glass to shoot in a salt-spray filled environment - unless it was for a commercial job. Camcorders are not perfect but they are fantastic all-rounders - especially for home movies - and I don't understand why they are so out of fashion. I have a Sony FDR-AX53 & it generally works brilliantly for home movies. The lack of manual control is very annoying, (XLR jacks are missed too) hence I am upgrading to either the PXW-Z150 or the PXW-Z90 series to take it to the next level.
I'm thinking one advantage the camcorder has , and that is it won't have short time limits on recording , and probably will not over heat as many cameras do when doing video.
Honestly man, I liked the image quality of the Sony camcorder more than whatever you recorded with indoors. It was a bit less harsh to my eyes. Cooler perhaps. The other thing that *seems* like it could be a benefit is the XLR handle kinda makes it look more “pro”, like if you were out trying to do work as a stringer videographer. Ya know, news camera or documentarian on the scene. Great review!

What an awesome piece of gear! I’m wondering if the aperture is constant? That would be a HUGE selling point.
It's not constant. It's f/2.8 - f/4.5 and that's equivalent to f/7.5 - f/12 in Full Frame.
It’s not unfortunately, I also wish it was a little wider open at the zoomed out end of the lens.
Constant aperture=huge selling point=huge lens!
You can set the aperture fixed, see iris
stig I meant that the maximum iris (f2.8) is only available at the wide end. As you zoom in this falls back to f4.5 as previously mentioned. This is necessary to keep the lens more compact. Would you be able to use a wide angle adapter?
I own both the sony a7iii and the ax700, I use the ax700 as a studio camera and the a7iii for photos and low light video which it does crush the ax700 but that's expected coming from a full frame sensor. That being said the ax700 is my go to camera I love it for video and ease of use.
Nice! I will say I did enjoy my time with the nx80, it’s great. I’m just spoiled anymore 🤣
@@TheEverydayDad I hear ya, but to be honest in your work flow, I think it could serve you well.
Thanks!
wich camera u shoot this video?
What about live stream? Continuos power and clean hdmi?
I'm not sure how much longer you will be able to keep saying "I am not a pro". You have produced so many videos on so many different cameras and tech, you ARE becoming a bit of a pro!
Bertram Photography That’s what I keep telling him! LoL
@@onechippyboi That is a bit pedantic view of what a professional is.
@@onechippyboi lol like I said you are welcome to you opinion. I however have too much respect for Gary to have an argument in his comments so I'll end it here. Have a good day!
That’s a true statement that I do receive ad revenue for these videos but I consider a professional videographer someone that gets paid to create work for a client.
I just make videos about things that I like. I guess the boxing comparison would be I’m the guy that likes hitting the heavy bag at his house and I let people watch 🤷♂️
Excellent review. I have subscribed.
this is an older video.. is this still a great camera? I want to record stand up comedy shows.. would this be a good choice? thanks
How is night vision?
so I'm in the process of starting my own LLC for video production and ive been watching you video for reviews and love them.... then i saw the OSU hat..... you now have a new subscriber. if possible is they away to DM you to talk about your opinion on the NX80 vs the PXW-z90?
I've had the NX30 for a long time. Awesome piece of kit when it came out
Add a Dad + a Camcorder WINNING post - Thank you for taking the time to review.
Ha! Trust me I get it, I have to sneak some of this gear in myself 🤣
And it doesn't limit video recording to a certain time.
Sooooo if the NX 80 doesn’t do 4 channel audio recording to allow the on board stereo mic plus the two XLR mic inputs then it CANNOT do everything.
What about an ILC video cam review?
Would love to get one but I got the Panasonic HC-X1. The Sony is not expensive. If you get all the accessories for a Dslr you are there. I love my X1 the only thing is that I want a larger sensor. Have an amazing Sunday, Andreas from Off Grid Sweden 🇸🇪
does it have SDI output?
No this version doesn’t but the next step up does 👍
@@TheEverydayDad thanks for the reply man, yeah it's amazing how jam packed that little camcorder is with features. but for now I'm probably still gonna save for a full frame DSLR, even though DSLRs still don't have SDI.
I totally agree, I wouldn’t recommend a camera like this for someone planning on making UA-cam content 👍
Which will give more good clearity and quality comparing with nx 200 n Z150 Sir...
8:38, the deep dof is amazing, no AF needed 😂. Would be a nice camera if 4K at 50/60 fps (PAL/NTSC) were available. S-Log available?
S-Log and HDR
I really want to know what export settings he uses for his videos no matter the quality of the video it looks good
What's the difference between the NX80 and the Z 90? I've used the Z 90 and found it very easy to use and it was really good in low light situations.
How do you pull the video files off the Camera via usb and the SD card plugged in? I am able to pull the SD card out and put in a separate read on the computer but not from the camera. Just gives me a couple of folders with some documentation and no video files?
My church uses two of those for their live streams!!
Lol in Saudi Arabia they use more then 5 cameras each one worth more than a250K USD to stream some sheiks talking about islamic stuffs.
Religion u know xD
so is good in low light?
I've used the Sony X70 (the previous gen camcorder) a bunch for work. It's an awesome workhorse camera.
The Sony FDR-ax100 is a better value. It has most of the features of this camcorder at a cheaper price. If you don’t need the pro audio handle, check out the ax100.
This is not a fair comparison. A pro Sumer camcorder is not The same as a DSLR in terms of form and function.
Did Sony ever made a 4K 60p camcorder for consumer market?
would you buy this video camera over a GH5?
I use a Sony AX53 with Rode Videomicro and it's a really nice for outdoors content. Lots of times it can be found on sale for 800ish. For just pure making video content it's really hard to beat. Plus not that heavy and compact. Not sure I would pack a NX80. Looks a bit much for my pack and hard to justify the cost at this time. For me anyways. I did spend the 35 bucks for a B&M digital clear filter to protect the lens and flaps. Wouldn't survive the woods without it. Nice video.
you are a beast at putting out content!
Can this blur the background?
I'm thinking one advantage the camcorder has , and that is it won't have short time limits on recording , and probably will not over heat as many cameras do when doing video.
most of my videos are shot on a sony camcorder sony fdr ax53
About noise in low light, if you tweak the Picture Profiles you can get a very good low noise image, even on a 21dB gain.
Does it have slog?
only in 8-bit which is useless.
Lokus Winterkirsch damn...!
Thanks for the eye-catching review on this awesome Camera.
No Sdi output though. You need Sdi for easier connection to broadcast equipment. I don't like using multiple converters
Then use the sony Z90... which is this but with SDI
