  • If you can find an AX 100 or AX 700 Sony Camcorder, buy them asap! They are top performers and are being discontinued by Sony. You can find deep discounts on them while they last. I am very disappointed to see this lineup fade away. You can currently (November 2023) find them at more than $1,000.00 lower than the retail price. Good luck!
    I have been using several AX100 units for years, I've recently added the AX700 to my prosumer arsenal and I am very pleased with it. Here are some of the physical and feature differences. I hope you enjoy it and thanks for watching.
    Sony AX700: amzn.to/2CGPhlp
    Sony AX100: amzn.to/2GHFKgp
    This Microphone works on both: amzn.to/2oosNRT
    Blazing FAST SD Card: amzn.to/2FukxqS

    I'm very often asked what cameras I use when making honeybee videos and these two are my most frequent grab-and-go cameras. I have been using the AX100 for many years and have never experienced a fail with it. BUT, the new AX700 lets me video in lower light with cleaner sequences and offers much higher frame rates for those amazing slow-motion video moments.
    Both of these cameras have night modes... both have ok built-in sound recording, but I have always used the Sony top-mounted microphones which provide superior audio pickup with no camera noise. The built-in mic picks up zoom noises etc... and will record your breathing behind the camera, the Sony top-mounted mic ECM-XYST1M eliminates those problems.
    So, for those of you who asked and are interested in the gear I use, these are my primary video cameras. What did I use to film this comparison? Another Sony AX-100...
    In the near future, I will be demonstrating the slow-motion capabilities of the AX700 as our honey bees begin their spring foraging adventures! Get ready to bee impressed :)
    I paid full price for both of these cameras, these were not given to me, nor did I receive a discount when purchasing them. I am required by Amazon to post the following statement when affiliate links are used:

    There are several reasons to upgrade not mentioned here. The autofocus is much improved. HDR, and S&Q motion. I love my AX100, but when I can afford it the AX100 becomes a Bcam and the AX700 becomes the main workhorse. Great cameras, both of them.

    Very informative thanks. I just ordered the AX700 upgrading from the AX53. The camera looks amazing along with the video quality. The manual settings are a great feature as you would always struggle with accurate settings on the 53 model. Can't wait to get started!

      Hi Frederick, I got the camera, its amazing. We went out last week to Bletchley Park where code breaking took place in WW2. I made short film of the day. Still learning the intricacies of the camera but overall really pleased with this first attempt. ua-cam.com/video/NSshKiX8-sA/v-deo.html

    Very nice comparison video. I've used the Sony CX900 since 2014 and am ready to upgrade to 4K. After much comparison, I've decided on the AX700. It has all the same features as both the NX-80 and the Z-90 with the exception of the XLR handle... and the SDI out on the Z90, neither of which I ever need. I'll go with a Mazantz mic preamp adapter ($100) if I ever need XLR mics.

    Honestly if the core, shudder speed and zoom level are the same then it boils down to what you want out of the features like LOS remote which is terrible I would also prefer the RF remote for sure. But if it’s a cost that isn’t going to put a dent in your wallet, why not enjoy better features of the new model! You can always sell the 100 to offset the cost of the new camera which is always a bonus. Great review as always and enjoy the new gear! Looking forward to all the future content you will film with it.

    Hi Fred, thanks for the vid. I also am an AX100 guy, but I get so frustrated with the poor auto focus. I am testing the AX700 and find that the auto focus is way better and the auto meter/focus is also better in low light. The spotmeter/focus is hard to set but I guess I'll get used to it. I really miss the touch screen though. It's weird, my AX700 AVCHD files won't play audio on my Windows 7 machines but will on my windows 10 machines. I wish the AX700 was lighter in weight- I shoot hand held for hours at a time in multi light situations. I like the adjustable audio level setting when using the Sony hotshoe mic on the 700, the 100 was auto set. Also, the zoom is way better and easier to control on the 700.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  5 років тому

      Yes! I also miss that touch screen... only use that when formatting a new card. I also agree that the 700 is quicker to focus and doesn't lose the subject as the AX100 units sometimes do as they drift to focus on the background at odd times. I have several of them and when I'm editing multi-camera sequences, the AX700 stands out with better image quality in challenging artificial/natural lighting situations. The 100 units are great when the scene is well illuminated. I'll just eventually retire the AX100 units as time passes, the price is holding on the AX700, not much of a drop, though when I first obtained the AX-100 units, they were $2k for 4K... now around $1,600.00 I think and the 700 units around $1,800.00 so for that difference, the 700 is a winner. I do all of my post production in Premiere Pro CC, all my systems are running Windows 10pro. Is there a microsoft codec package that would upgrade the Windows 7 system? Or, through the video card you use? Thanks for watching!

      When it comes to dslr cameras, I'm a Nikonian, but when it comes to movies, I'm definitely a Sony enthusiast... just earned my Diploma in Movie making last month :)

    • @ScaryFear
      @ScaryFear 6 років тому

      Ah for photography I'm a Canon person all the way. I've had such bad luck with Nikons. They don't like me and I don't like them. Although I do want to try the P900 at one point. I totally agree about Sony for video. My first video camera was an old 8mm film Sony from the 80s and I loved it. Oh wow congratulations on the diploma. That's awesome.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  6 років тому +2

      In the end, no matter what you have in hand, it's what you do with it that counts :) It's that Canon owner hatred of Nikon owners that keeps me from doing photography related videos... they are often irrational. I was photographing a wedding a couple of years ago when a woman walked up all happy saying "what cameras are you using?" When I told her, she paused as if she'd eaten something sour and said "wow, I thoght they hired a professional, I guess not!" and she walked away... at another reception, another woman looked at my gear and said "I guess I'll talk to you, even though you're using Nikon"... (';')( ';').. so so strange. I don't care what anyone is carrying... it's a very strange dynamic. My Nikon use goes all the way back to undersea imaging and what my friends at Nasa are using... the lens investment keeps me in that corner, but I'm fine with anything as long as it's professional grade :)

    • @ScaryFear
      @ScaryFear 6 років тому +1

      It's really dumb that people react that way. Nikon's are not for me. I have tried them and they are just frustrating. But I bought my husband a point and shoot Nikon once for a holiday since he had no camera at the time. He had no issues with it and took very nice photos. Funny enough when I forgot mine one time I had to use his and the darn thing wouldn't take a pic when I hit the shutter. WTF? It was so weird and he said he coudln't explain it. He just pushes the button. I respect people with nice nikons though and that they know how to take pics of high quality with them. I was at a botanical garden once and saw a guy with the biggest camera I had ever seen. I asked if I could see it and take a pic of it. He said yes. It was a Nikon and I uploaded that pic and named it "Outer Space Camera." Despite my bad luck I'm willing to try the P900 because I have major respect for a camera that can take pics 85x zoom and get pics of the moon. My canon does 65x and I was very disappointed with my filming of the International Space Station though I'm proud to have gotten a blurry video of it. I wonder if the extra reach would work better for me with the Nikon provided it lets me push the shutter haha. I own an awesome pair of Nikon binoculars. I don't see Canon making those and they are small for traveling and have great image quality.

    • @ScaryFear
      @ScaryFear 6 років тому +1

      You find that anywhere where there are two companies competing in the same niche. I've seen it both ways with Nikon to Canon too. But another example is the whole Jeep vs Toyota thing I have encountered since becoming a Jeep owner. Well my husband drives a Toyota Tacoma and I don't get it when I see drawings on windows of one car peeing on another haha. I love mentioning that our cars which we named Bruce and Alan are friends. We also own both PS4 and Xbox and find that owning both things you find some are better at some things while the other is better at something else and it works out.

    Does the AX-700 allow clean 4K out via HDMI for external monitor? Or is it limited to 1080P like the AX100?
    This major problem ended up forcing me to buy a Atomos Shogun as my monitor/recorder, as a result of that horrible kill by Sony on the 100. I understand when the camera was in trial testing, the feature was still accessible. But there were camera overheating issues they could not address via firmware. So the feature to export clean 4K via HDMI was killed off...
    That is a major hurdle for those of us using these to make films. That little monitor doesn’t cut it on some things.
    This was such a handicap to an otherwise very nice camera!
    Also, other then those things you showed in the video being different, is the only other major change HDR is added? If so, with me owning the Shogun to use with the 100, there is little, if any need for me to upgrade at this point. As the Shogun has multiple HDR modes.

    • @FrederickDunn

      Sends clean 4K video to external monitors and even off-board recorders, with the HDMI output. The full-size (Type-A) HDMI terminal reduces strain on the cable and minimizes damage or accidental disconnection. It will feed your 4k monitors.

    @Frederick Dunn. We wish to purchase the AX700 for use in church for two things: 1. Record the Sunday message for archival purposes, and 2. Be able to provide a live video feed to a room at the ground floor (the church is on the 2nd floor) for the elderly and people with disabilities (PWD, on wheelchairs, walkers, etc.) to be able to watch the Service on a flat screen. My question is, does the AX700 provide simultaneous live camera feed to the viewfinder/LCD and the HDMI Output port? 2nd question, does the HDMI output display a "clean" video without the status messages (ie. Battery level, recording time, audio meters, etc.)? Thank you.

      Yes, you can use it for a live-feed, I connect it to high resolution monitors on occasion, so that works fine. With the addition of that joystick the brilliant intuitive touch operability of the AX100 was sacrificed and killed, and the body of AX700 was made a lot bulkier. I've recently watched Alistair Chapmans instructional videos on AX100, and was mind blowing how brilliant touch operability was implemented in 2014 by Sony engineers on tha AX100. This has gone now, and we have to fight with this joystick crazyness. That is a massive difference. The big competitor Canon GX10, G60 managed to combine excellent touch operability with joystick.

    I have the Sony AX100. If you're using HD, it's simply perfect. Videos are clear and very smooth.
    Everything works perfect except when you try use 4K. The minute you switch it to 4K, the screen becomes VERY SLOW and laggy. You will notice is even before you start recording. The videos you record will be clear but any kind of movement in the video such as someone moving or a waterfall and so on would be VERY LAGGY. I couldn't find a setting to fix that whatsoever. I tried all the different settings. I displayed vidoes directly from camera to 4K TV, after burning them into Blu Ray discs and using UHD Blu Ray player, through computer, every possible way. Still the same problem. The 4K videos on the AX100 camcorder are simply too laggy and not worth the price NOR the size of the camcorder.
    It's not just my unit, I tried 5 other ones of the same model at different stores and they have the same problem. If you have the AX100, before you reply by saying you never noticed such a problem, please do the following:
    Set the camcorder to 4K mode, no need to actually record. And move it around and try to have a moving object in front of it, even moving your hand if you have no other option. Then switch the file type to HD and try do the same thing. You will notice how it's 1000x smoother.
    Did they solve this problem with the AX700?

      Le 4k est en 25p ou 30p, or le FullHD est en 50 ou 60p toute la différence est là ! il faut savoir filmer en 25 ips, c'est une habitude à prendre:
      1- Shutter au 1/50 ou 1/25 pour avoir du flou de mouvement
      2- Faire des mouvements de caméra très lents
      L'AX700 ne résoudra pas cela car pas de 50p ou 60p possible

      Unfortunately AX100 records 4K at 25p (25 frames per second) the new one ax700 allows to increase frames rate to about 30p if you set NTSC but at 30p the moving subject are laggy too . Both cameras don't send signal 4K 50p Pal or 60p NTSC via HDMI to external recorder. That's frustrating.

      1 - comme j'ai dit il faut savoir filmer en 25p
      2- On peut exporter le 4k 25p en 30p très vite en doublant la 5ème images 123455123455etc...ça passe très bien sur ma télé 65" 4k qui extrapole en 50 ou 60p et avec du 30p elle arrive à suivre des mouvements rapides de près sans décrocher. On peut utiliser aussi FUX OPTIQUE de CC2015 pour exporter le 25p en 30p ou 50p mais c'est long ..6fois le temps réel avec mon ordinateur pour un export 4k 25p>>>4k 50p avec reconstitution images intermédiaires
      3- en vidéo projection le downscal de 4k je le laisse en 25p et c'est pas génant du tout ...Pas plus que tous les films cinéma qui sont en 24p

      The native 50p or 60p movie quality is higher than the artificially increased 25p at 50p or 60p. Starting at 25p you can't do slow motion. La qualité du film 50p ou 60p natif est plus élevée que la 25p artificiellement augmentée à 50p ou 60p. À partir de 25p, vous ne pouvez pas faire de ralenti.

      Of course !!! But y se my film on a 65" 4k télé and the" interpolation" of the télé is good in 4k 25p very good in 4k 30p ..Effectivly is better to shot directly in 4k 50 or 60p but the good solution at minimal price is actually the Panasonic GH5 for this ...And now rather every body shot with Smartphone or action cam like Gopro ..The market is not enough large to motive Sony or other to study for a good not PRO caméra abble to shot in 50 60p 4k ...C'est triste mais c'est comme ça ..Y a Canon qui en a sorti une autour de 3000€ qui film en 50 60p 4k la XF400. Mais on est plus dans la même gamme de prix !
      Sorry for my english y am french

    0:20 I could cry at this part, I've the Sony FDR-AX-100. So I've this old shoe, where newer microphons doesn't fit. I've a Sony edm-bm1 too, which is a newer microphone. So I'm simply looking for an adapter but since I'm not into that stuff, idk if there is a right one, I found many for lights etc. but I'm fucked🥲
    If you know what I need to search for that, please help kkkkk

      You decide that on your own based on what you need. Both cameras are good. I prefer the AX-700... but both produce exceptional video sequences.

      It does have Night Shot... in the camera menu it's under Camera Settings, below Low Lux, select NIGHTSHOT or NIGHTSHOT LIGHT. It has both and it's excellent.

    The best feature of the AX100 is that you can easaly focus on whatever you want, by pushing the screen on where you want to focus. I would never use auto focus, and it sounds like I would never upgrade, as that features is lost

    Where on Earth are 4K60 camcorders at the ~£600 mark?! I've been waiting for a 4K60 camcorder around this price range for about 8 years now. But every year all any of these companies seems to do is rebrand their 4K30 again!
    The Sony AX-53 came out very late 2015 / early 2016, which in itself was a refresh of the AX-33. Are Sony really saying they have no better sensor and processor to make a new camcorder in 2020? So what do Sony do? They remove the EVF from the the AX-53, call it the AX-43 and then charge the same price as what you can already pick up the AX-53 for anyway!
    Why is 4K60 taking so long to arrive at a non-pro price point? Phones and GoPros have been doing 4K60 for years and in many cases have even moved from this to 4K120 and 8K30. When are we going to see Panasonic or Sony bring this to ~£600 price point? HC-VX2 or AX-63? They wouldn't even need to spend that much money developing them either, they could keep the lens and OIS and body and everything else the same, just update the sensor and processors to give us 4K60 using H.265.There is no technical reason they can't, heat has nothing to do with it as I said phones and action cameras have done it for years and have a much tighter power/heat envelope to work within.
    What annoys me most is all these companies keep crying out that 'phones are stealing all their customers' but then they are so slow to give us new features such as 4K60. Phones come out every single year and move things on significantly every single year, so is it really a surprise customers forget amount them?
    For my use-case which is filming low league football, handheld, pitch side you do need a proper dedicated camcorder because the image stabilisation is much better on these than it is on a larger sensor mirrorless camera plus the fast electric zooming and super fast focusing is very much needed too. I just wish someone brought out 60fps version because I often need to slow down clips for goals or fouls, a 4K60 version of the AX43 or HC-VX1 would be a perfect camcorder.
