Boys, I just self installed a capture card into my 3DS. For the longest time I wanted to do a 3DS tour but didn't know how I would record it, but now I absolutely can. Expect a 3DS tour video soon.
I've thrown in a 512GB SD card in mine, and already filled more than 100GB of the card, I'm in the process of cramming in as much content as possible including emulators with thousands of roms and such. I'm legit considering upgrading it to a 1TB SD card for memes

But it's simply for memes, when the 2TB micro SD cards are released (which currently is the maximum size physically possible and the maximum size Fat32 will allow before having a stroke), I am going to cram the whole 3DS library in it. I'll have to use 3DSBank to achieve some of this due to the 300 icon limit. The only downside of doing this with larger cards alone, the boot time is stupidly long.

@@JigglypuffTutorials there are homebrewed apps you can use to get around it though, I think he shows one in this video, if not it's in the 512gb 3ds video he made. Though you have to reload it each time so even if you use it to get 600 or even 900 applications installed switching between then with a load time of 38-45 seconds would be really tedious

@@NatetheNintendofan while that might be possible, it wouldn't be worth it on top of the massive load times on larger cards, the 3DS has to take time loading individual game icons from the SD card, and it could overload the 3DS. In the end, probably not worth it, Nintendo most likely put the limit at 300 for this reason, but for the Wii U, honestly idk why they set it to 300 icons considering that is a fairly decent console for it's time that can even run BOTW. Maybe they didn't think people would need to install more than 300 games? I dunno. I do wish there was a Wii U variant of "3DSBank" tho.
I thought that 128GB was the limit, thank you for answering my question of what happens with larger memory cards. Either way, 128GB is more than enough for me to have a great library on the go without constantly deleting and installing games.

Even then you can't install games and keep the app data in the SD card, only the apk moves to there if you move the app to external(at least in newer phones that still had micro SD support like the S20).
for anyone considering doing this. Remember that you need to format any SD/micro SD cards to fat32 if its 64gb or above if you plan on using one with a 3DS. Even if you do that, you shouldnt put anything 256GB or over as there are know issues and minor slow-downs.
Its 2AM and this video has just popped into my recommendations feed. An hour earlier I was trying to use a brand new 64GB micro SD card into my 2ds, which the console wasnt able to read. So I just went on to amazon to return it and get a 32GB one, which is more expensive and takes 2 more days to arrive. Long story short, this video (specially 3:50 onwards) just probably saved me a lot of time and money. Thanks a lot
Same! I’ve had a 3DS since the xl model was new & before the new model was announced & got a new 3DS xl around when the news of them no longer being manufactured was announced. Since then I’ve had my 3DS modded so I can download a few games since the eshop closed & games like captain toad’s treasure tracker are just way too much for my 4GB micro SD card lol. I’ll probably just upgrade to a 32GB micro SD card since I know that’s the official limit for upgrading. 1TB is definitely overkill & I don’t plan on getting every single 3DS & 2DS game, but I would like to backup some physical games & their saves

Wikipedia lists 1382 games there have officially came out for the system, meaning that you can carry around about 3/4 (74.1%) of the 3DS' entire library with you, all on a single card (Assuming you can use all 2048GB on that card, which you never can - the actual usable storage is always smaller than what's advertised, but it's fun to theorize nonetheless!)
Funny enough, you don't even need homebrew if you use cards up to 128gb They work completely fine too without homebrew if you just format them to fat32. Nintendo just expected that everything that isn't fat32 not to work anymore.

Yes; you can technically use just about any size Micro SD card in a New 3DS XL so long as it's formatted in the FAT32 format, but it's important to remember that the FAT32 format was really only intended for storage devices up to 32GB of storage maximum; hence the reason the exFAT format exists and why computers won't let you format larger storage devices in FAT32 normally, so don't be surprised if you experience some load time issues with larger capacity storage devices formatted in FAT32; especially those with exceptionally large storage capacities.
This is a really awesome video at showcasing some of the more unique things you can do with a hacked 3DS. Just out of curiosity, the hacks guide recommends that you don't go above 128 GB to avoid breaking certain games, like GBA graphics in VC titles. Did you find a way around that or do you just not play VC titles on this giga3DS?
Never encountered those problems yet, but I do not deny they exist. I think it's for certain games this issue shows itself. So I do play GBA VC titles, no problem.
Not every game is good, but I would 100% be lying if I said the 3DS library is bad lol. It’s a great handheld & will probably forever be my favorite unless Nintendo decides to make another portable console that has the same capabilities & more of the new 3DS models
Overkill. The cheaper ultra SanDisk 1tb is more than enough for a 3ds or a switch. The read and write speeds of both consoles can't max out what the ultra card is capable of, which is 120 mb/s.
Fun fact: there are 1tb sd cards from amazon for 90$, 80$ at the moment, tho yeah as people said, doesn't work great for the 3ds but works great for the switch.

you might beable to put nvme m.2 ssd on switch with a ribbon cable to micro sd adapter to a nvme. it'll need a power source so i reccomend the microstart car jumpstarter. it hosts a 3A and 5A or a 10A usb and I used it on my Wii U to store games on a external usb. now instead of microstart I own a gearhead 5 port powered usb hub. (gearhead is out of stock I salvaged a power adapter from archos 101 tablet) -do your own research on products before purchase...
Don't forget the cart slot with a flash cart for roms. Don't know how well it would integrate with apps but for just loading ds and 3ds it should work right?
Came here to check if it does work, since people always say it doesnt support more than 32gb (it does), but that guy just bought the entire e shop and I was wondering if it would all fit on a 1TB SD card like on my Note 9 with its 1TB SD Card.
Hey dude you dont need cias on your 3ds anymore, you can use a program to install them on your pc and then just put the sd card back on the 3ds, it saves a ton of time
Also if you want to make the ultimate 3ds, the only things left would be making the usb c charger mod and upgrading the battery, I've seen some dudes with a 3300mah battery, dunno if they are good as the original ones
@@vmarcelo49 I upgraded to a supposed 2500 mah battery, but idek if this battery lasts longer than the original. Also I don't see much point in usb c either than having more cables to charge my 3DS with. What I had in mind personally was a bluetooth hardmod, and capture card hardmod as well, but those are pretty challenging ones that have a high risk of bricking the system.

lol time to start adding some movies in 640x480!! 480GB’s is gonna be really hard to fill without it😂 I’ve got about 40 scales down movies (it won’t play anything above 480P so compress down to that) and it costs about 25-30GB’s. Mind you it’s still better to watch movies on your phone and play 3DS instead😂
Have you had any problems with it like overheating or anything? I’ve been looking to upgrade my storage but I don’t want to risk paying a lot and it won’t work or mess the device up.
Good luck making a 3DS or even New 3DS overheat lol. It's just not powerful enough to output a significant amount of heat. Fast and large micro SD cards don't really make a difference since the 3DS will always be the bottleneck. So no, I haven't had issues of the sort

@@jdx.1386 A micro SD card or SD card has no chance of damaging your console 😭 so no damage was done. Themes don't save if game patching is turned off for me, so I always leave game patching turned on via the Luma3DS options menu. As for loading times, loading into games is pretty much unaffected, but loading into different system states will take a while. For example, booting up my N3DSXL with the 1TB card takes just under 40 seconds. Pretty long. Getting into DS mode is even longer, when I'm loading DS software off of the micro SD card. I would wager around 1 minute and 30 seconds to get into DS mode. That's probably the most irritating thing, since 3DSBank utilizes DS mode. So everytime I want to switch home menus via 3DSBank, I might as well go get a cup of water lol. Also my 3DS is a bit unstable on the OS, as in, it freezes for a bit sometimes on the home menu, then goes back to normal. I don't know if that's because I am using a 1TB card, or because I have over 240 000 files and 20 000 folders on the card. For my uses though, the amount of space I get is completely worth it. I will say this, the 512GB micro SD card I used before in my N3DSXL was completely stable. Sure, it still took a little while to boot into DS mode sometimes, but it didn't even bother me. My recommendation is going for 128GB, trying it out, and if you need to upgrade go for 256GB... or maybe even 512GB. Good luck!
@@AugustusMcMillan idk why did my comment got deleted but a 3ds rom pack with 1861 (claimed as a complete set) is only 74.64gb. They are compressed in winrar so just a bit higher than that. There's also a list of probably "complete" 3ds games on reddit and the total amount is less than 64gb
@@menantumakawak Btw I wasn't the one who deleted your comment, but surely your original comment must have a discrepancy. My Nintendo 3DS folder (for my first/slot0 home menu) is 161.5GB in size. It has mostly nintendo games, and the custom firmware apps I have on there regardless take up little space. My second home menu (Slot1) is 107.5GB in size. Third is 49.3GB in size (Slot2), and my newly made 4th home menu is 117.2GB in size. This is all according to GodMode9. I feel as though you aren't including games from various regions in this 3DS library. Either that, or compressing those files REALLY trimmed down the file size.
Formatted in 64k or 32k? ( question goes both for 512gb and 1tb ). Any other settings compared to a 128gb? Thinking of TM++ complaints of card being formatted in 64k and that'll give slow boottimes of nds games?
Boot times run faster the higher the allocation unit size, so 64k is ideal for 1TB, as I've formatted in this video. Especially for 128GB+, as any allocation lower than 64k on 128GB will produce some bugs, such as people mentioning GBA visual misalignment, and some games not saving. It also causes themes not to save after a reboot, but this is remedied by leaving game patching enabled. Unfortunately, once you use cards 200GB and up, even if you use the highest allocation unit size of 64K to format them in FAT32, these bugs will still be produced, as there are too many clusters produced with these huge cards, which causes the 3DS to have some bugs. The only bug I personally encountered was the theme bug, which again, is fixed by leaving game patching on in the Luma menu.
@@od3stroyer771 I actually got that theme-bug on my 128gb with 64k. That makes me worried to go up to 256-512gb cards. Also, I was planning to run a "complete" nds collection, but TM++ is quite slow already at 128gb :O

Or maybe this white Samsung variation of a 128GB micro sd card deviates a bit from the other 128GB micro SD cards, and has just enough capacity to register as too many clusters. You do see this type of deviation between different brands, I know my Lexar 128GB has a little less capacity than my Sandisk Extreme 128GB. Whatever the case, loading DS mode with my 1TB 64KB formatted card takes around 1 minute and 30 seconds. This applies for TwilightMenu++, 3DSBank, and other DS applications stored on the card. It is annoying, but the capacity for my personal needs is more than worth it.
Only if you don't format it correctly, i have a 128gb one on fat32 and 32kb Cluster, the games are a bit slower, but cnsidering my console is shared with my siblings, i think it's something i can live with

Ayee glad I can help, I know there's a GBA emulator on the 3DS version of Retroarch, but installing Retroarch is one of the more complicated installations for the 3DS in my opinion. There is also GBARunner 2, using TwilightMenu++. I personally use Retroarch on my 3DS for GBA emulation. The mGBA emulator from Universal Updater is okay... but imfamous for its instability. Personally though I'd recommend Retroarch. If you need clarification or help on this, you can ask me further, or when in doubt, follow a video guide.
Yes. You're missing out on faster boot times, your themes saving (unless game patching is left on), and risking save incompatibility with certain games and having certain gba games with graphical misalignment. If you're using 128GB on a 3DS, you might as well format in 65536 byte clusters, or 64KB clusters imo.
Oh sorry I wasn't thinking when typing that, just enable game patching in Luma3DS if you have a modded 3DS. Even if u format in 65536 byte allocation unit size the themes will keep disappearing.
Will certain SD cards just not work? I am trying a Moric 512 GB Micro SDXC. Formatted to Fat 32 using EaseUS Partition Manager and the GUI Partition Program no luck. Any advice please?
Oooooh... may be fake. On Amazon, it is SUSPICIOUSLY cheap for 512GB of capacity. I never heard of Moric before. There is also barely any reviews. Best to check if your card is a fake.

I've actually heard that the entire 3DS library is nearly 2TB. Of course this includes the games from various regions as well.
I would argue most of the 3ds games are around 800mb. considering eshop games usually even less then 100mb each.

Just out of curiosity, the hacks guide recommends that you don't go above 128 GB to avoid breaking certain games, like GBA graphics in VC titles. Did you find a way around that or do you just not play VC titles on this giga3DS?
Never encountered those problems yet, but I do not deny they exist. I think it's for certain games this issue shows itself. So I do play GBA VC titles, no problem.

Overkill. The cheaper ultra SanDisk 1tb is more than enough for a 3ds or a switch. The read and write speeds of both consoles can't max out what the ultra card is capable of, which is 120 mb/s.

you might beable to put nvme m.2 ssd on switch with a ribbon cable to micro sd adapter to a nvme. it'll need a power source so i reccomend the microstart car jumpstarter. it hosts a 3A and 5A or a 10A usb and I used it on my Wii U to store games on a external usb. now instead of microstart I own a gearhead 5 port powered usb hub. (gearhead is out of stock I salvaged a power adapter from archos 101 tablet)

Hey dude you dont need cias on your 3ds anymore, you can use a program to install them on your pc and then just put the sd card back on the 3ds, it saves a ton of time
Also if you want to make the ultimate 3ds, the only things left would be making the usb c charger mod and upgrading the battery, I've seen some dudes with a 3300mah battery, dunno if they are good as the original ones
@@vmarcelo49 I upgraded to a supposed 2500 mah battery, but idek if this battery lasts longer than the original. Also I don't see much point in usb c either than having more cables to charge my 3DS with.
What I had in mind personally was a bluetooth hardmod, and capture card hardmod as well, but those are pretty challenging ones that have a high risk of bricking the system.

Good luck making a 3DS or even New 3DS overheat lol. It's just not powerful enough to output a significant amount of heat. Fast and large micro SD cards don't really make a difference since the 3DS will always be the bottleneck.

@@jdx.1386 A micro SD card or SD card has no chance of damaging your console 😭 so no damage was done. Themes don't save if game patching is turned off for me, so I always leave game patching turned on via the Luma3DS options menu. As for loading times, loading into games is pretty much unaffected, but loading into different system states will take a while. For example, booting up my N3DSXL with the 1TB card takes just under 40 seconds. Pretty long. Getting into DS mode is even longer, when I'm loading DS software off of the micro SD card. I would wager around 1 minute and 30 seconds to get into DS mode. That's probably the most irritating thing, since 3DSBank utilizes DS mode. So everytime I want to switch home menus via 3DSBank, I might as well go get a cup of water lol.
Also my 3DS is a bit unstable on the OS, as in, it freezes for a bit sometimes on the home menu, then goes back to normal. I don't know if that's because I am using a 1TB card, or because I have over 240 000 files and 20 000 folders on the card. For my uses though, the amount of space I get is completely worth it.
I will say this, the 512GB micro SD card I used before in my N3DSXL was completely stable. Sure, it still took a little while to boot into DS mode sometimes, but it didn't even bother me.
My recommendation is going for 128GB, trying it out, and if you need to upgrade go for 256GB... or maybe even 512GB. Good luck!

@@AugustusMcMillan idk why did my comment got deleted but a 3ds rom pack with 1861 (claimed as a complete set) is only 74.64gb. They are compressed in winrar so just a bit higher than that. There's also a list of probably "complete" 3ds games on reddit and the total amount is less than 64gb

It has mostly nintendo games, and the custom firmware apps I have on there regardless take up little space. My second home menu (Slot1) is 107.5GB in size. Third is 49.3GB in size (Slot2), and my newly made 4th home menu is 117.2GB in size. This is all according to GodMode9. I feel as though you aren't including games from various regions in this 3DS library. Either that, or compressing those files REALLY trimmed down the file size.

Boot times run faster the higher the allocation unit size, so 64k is ideal for 1TB, as I've formatted in this video. Especially for 128GB+, as any allocation lower than 64k on 128GB will produce some bugs, such as people mentioning GBA visual misalignment, and some games not saving. It also causes themes not to save after a reboot, but this is remedied by leaving game patching enabled. Unfortunately, once you use cards 200GB and up, even if you use the highest allocation unit size of 64K to format them in FAT32, these bugs will still be produced, as there are too many clusters produced with these huge cards, which causes the 3DS to have some bugs. The only bug I personally encountered was the theme bug, which again, is fixed by leaving game patching on in the Luma menu.
@@od3stroyer771 I actually got that theme-bug on my 128gb with 64k. That makes me worried to go up to 256-512gb cards. Also, I was planning to run a "complete" nds collection, but TM++ is quite slow already at 128gb :O

Or maybe this white Samsung variation of a 128GB micro sd card deviates a bit from the other 128GB micro SD cards, and has just enough capacity to register as too many clusters. You do see this type of deviation between different brands, I know my Lexar 128GB has a little less capacity than my Sandisk Extreme 128GB. Whatever the case, loading DS mode with my 1TB 64KB formatted card takes around 1 minute and 30 seconds. This applies for TwilightMenu++, 3DSBank, and other DS applications stored on the card. It is annoying, but the capacity for my personal needs is more than worth it.

Ayee glad I can help, I know there's a GBA emulator on the 3DS version of Retroarch, but installing Retroarch is one of the more complicated installations for the 3DS in my opinion. There is also GBARunner 2, using TwilightMenu++. I personally use Retroarch on my 3DS for GBA emulation.
The mGBA emulator from Universal Updater is okay... but imfamous for its instability. Personally though I'd recommend Retroarch. If you need clarification or help on this, you can ask me further, or when in doubt, follow a video guide.

Yes. You're missing out on faster boot times, your themes saving (unless game patching is left on), and risking save incompatibility with certain games and having certain gba games with graphical misalignment. If you're using 128GB on a 3DS, you might as well format in 65536 byte clusters, or 64KB clusters imo.
