Liquid iv is a legit amazing product. Some people swear by Nuun, but I've found Liquid iv works much better for me (and I prefer the taste). Since I started drinking it, it has eliminated a lot of the muscle pain and cramping I had due to hydration issues. Living in Colorado, it's especially an issue for me. It's on the pricey end, but every flavor is great (except strawberry, that flavor is ass... which may be what you're into, I'm not).
3ds is so underrated. Here's a few other neat things I can recommend using if for: -GBA virtual console isnt exactly emulation. It's running (mostly) natively using the DS's backwards compatibility. There are a few functions that are emulated, but it's mostly running natively. You can use rom injection to play basically any GBA game, and apply a patch to remove the dark filter. -snes virtual console on the new 3ds run really well, and even has a pixel perfect mode -there is a port of the super Mario 64 pc port for 3ds that runs fantastic on new 3ds. The build I played used both the left eye and right eye pixels in 2d mode, making it have double the horizontal screen resolution of a normal 3ds game! It looks really, really good.
Yessir! I love seeing a bigger youtuber talking about the 3DS again! I've recently bought a new one just to mod, and one of the main things I want to try and push is for everyone to start using streetpass again!!
omg yes! I didn't get a 3ds till 2020 and haven't really given it a seriously look till a few months ago. I really kinda lament that I never got to use street pass. Although the 3ds's battery drains surprisingly fast in sleep mode compared to my vita that will last MONTHS on a full charge in sleep mode with a game running. Sadly it's hard to justify constantly charging my 3ds just for the 0.000001% chance of getting a streetpass siggggghhhhhh
@@herleyaw Streetpass is safe to use on modded 3DSes (heck even online multiplayer is safe, nintendo didn't really invest on mod detection until the switch)
Part of the reason I like to mod handhelds vs emulation machines is for two reason: native play and form function. Nintendo has been making handhelds for over 40 years. No one is making a better handheld than those guys. And like he said in the video, if you wanna play DS or 3DS games, no other system is gonna have the 2 screen, touch screen set up.
I think the Steam Deck is a better hand held than anything Nintendo has in stock right now. It can emulate all of the Nintendo consoles. As for dual screen, I have a DS emulator on my phone that does it perfectly. And it looks better because my phone has a much higher resolution on an OLED display, and has a stylus. Oh, and I used to have a DS and 3DS. They were cool for the time, but it's much easier to emulate all of their old hand helds on a phone. Tablet is even better. I think the Steam Deck is the best hand held on the market today. Nintendo needs to step up their game, because their current users are all getting old. The only kids who still play Nintendo games are ones who parents are so into Nintendo that they buy it for their kids to get them into it to. Btw, I used to love Nintendo. Still have a N64. But they've proven themselves to be ran by awful people, and I won't be purchasing from them directly anymore. I think I'll email them some photos of me emulating Mario Wonder just to get under their skin.
@@adamgerald849 “Better than they have in stock”. That’s the key phrase there. The Steam Deck is just not a substitute for a DS/3DS. And don’t get me wrong. I think the Steam Deck is amazing (along with other recent handhelds). But I think they both have a place. But I’ve tried playing DS games on the Steam Deck. It sucks.
I just modded my old 3ds XL and I barely touched my switch since. I even bought a little case and stylus set for it, feels like I was ten years old again. The 3ds isn’t just a retro portable it also has sooo many amazing 3ds games including the definitive 3D zeldas (Majora’s mask, ocarina of time), 3D Pokémon, and arguably the best of the animal crossing franchise, New Leaf. For someone who doesn’t have a 3ds but wants to access the library of games, get an old 2ds. It’s the cheapest out of all the editions and the design is the most comfortable to hold, plus it just looks the cutest.
Sure, it's the cheapest of all the editions but i think i'll settle for the old 3ds. 2ds can NOT play 3ds games. Also emulating 2ds is so easy in a cp so yea (i tried to emulate 3ds on my phone and citra being the only option i have, it's so fcking trash on a cp. It just doesn't have the feel even on pc and it's super laggy on a low-end phone, which is the only thing i have). I also read that you said it's the cutest? The og ds (the non-xl one) is super cute! The sheer number of XLs that is out there overshadowed the smaller, much cuter version that is, the og 3ds. (Best thing is that it's cheaper and more portable lol.) I'll be buying one and it's like, 30 bucks cheaper than XL or LL. Wish me luck so i don't get scammed lolol

@@helllllloworld It seems to be genetics. I can use VR for hours in games that people have complained of motion sickness. It has something to do with your equilibrium. The novelty of the 3D effect never wore off for me. It's my favorite feature of the system and I wish everything else had it. Would kill for another 3D handheld from Nintendo.
I actually never had a 3DS but I did do this on my DSi and it's INCREDIBLE. Being able to play GB, GBA, NES, SNES, Gensis, and DS games all on one console is INSANE. It works like a charm!
I use my DSI xl mostly too and it works amazing for most of what I use it for. But how did you get SNES running on yours? Can you get it to be any good? It doesn't really work well at all for me and I've not been able to find a solution
@@MASTERMIND2368 I'm not entirely sure bc I've always just used an SD card for dsi modding but I think that using an r4 cart instead of the SD card helps emulated games run better. Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure the r4 carts have extra memory built into them.
The 3DS was such a fun time in gaming. The console came out at a time when I could actually afford the majority of the library and I had so much fun with friends. Time to fire up the 3DS again!
I meant to get a 3DS as soon as Nintendo stopped releasing new versions every year... and then I forgot about it until they were out of production. Oops. Tempted to get a New 3DS XL if I can find one in good condition for a reasonable price. Until then though, I'm really enjoying a modded Switch.
Little warning about twilight menu: Unlike an R4 or an emulator, it will NOT apply anti-piracy patches automatically. You have to add the necessary AR codes for each game
I never stopped playing my 3DS. I love it. The clamshell design is ideal for travel and can be pulled out at any time to enjoy just a few minutes of gaming.
I modded my 2DS XL around the summer of 2020 while COVID was heavy and all I have to say is that it was so worth it when I got all the configurations that the modding community has to offer. So with that said, Thank you WULFF DEN for covering this video and showing what the 3DS is capable of doing with the CFW.
@@blootube97 The best mod I can think of is something called TWPatch. It sharpens the image of original DS games. I hope this helps out and answers your question.

I actually just tried this about 2 weeks ago. It was super easy which surprised me. Been having a lot of fun with my 3dsxl and Wii U quite a bit this past year.
Let me tell u. I did this 3 times like 3 years ago, when I was still in high school, and it took me abouy 3-5 hours to install. I even had prior experience, it still took all the time I had after school. Was worth it tho. I CFW my friends 2ds/3ds so we could play smash bros during lunch through the rest of high school. Then the switch was released a few years later. What took the longest was downloading the stuff from the 3ds, since my wifi runs at 2Mbps, no joke.
I wonder if it's possible for anyone to make a version that works on the original DS or DS Lite since that's all I have at the moment though Super Mario 64 DS is still my preferred game
What's nice is that there's a version you can compile with really good 3d and a proper camera on the c stick. It was so far the best Mario 64 experience I've had.
I never once turned off the 3D slider on any of my 3DSs. The loss of that screen feature is a damn tragedy, as far as I'm concerned. I recently went back to a 3DS after a while and how seamlessly the eye tracking works on the New 3DS is just frickin' magical. I've been using VR for a while and it feels so weird to just see 3D graphics on a little window without anything strapped to your face. I wish we could get these screens on something else these days.
@@NZP208 I feel those get overrepresented. A handful of late games ignored the 3D altogether, all after the 2DS had been released, but most stuff in there has some form of 3D. Even the 2D games that have 3D separation for the layers look great that way. For what It's worth I also kept the 3D on with my launch 3DS, but it was certainly more of a hassle when playing in unusual positions or places. I never did have any issues with the eye tracking on the newer ones, though. I wonder if that's a biometrics thing or a hardware thing. We never got enough of that tech to figure out all its quirks.

@@NZP208 I was referring to stuff like the M2 Megadrive/Genesis re-releases, where they took stuff like Space Harrier and Sonic the Hedgehog and separated each layer of sprites in 3D space. You can also choose to play those on a CRT screen with a curve to it instead, they're pretty neat. Other 2D games do that, too. I think the 3DS version of shovel knight and even the 3DS Phoenix Wright. I like those quirky uses of it, and it looks great on 2D platformers.
hey! huge fan of the mods, for emulation I actually recommend the ultimate injector, basically making them authentic virtual counsel titles, that run beautifully because it's Nintendo's own emulator made for their own handheld. Plus they look better while running, and feel more authentic.

The coolest thing about Twilight to me is the ability to load as many DSiWare as you want, if you get those games from the eShop (or other means), they can ONLY be played from the Internal storage and, not the SD Card, that way, your storage will be full pretty soon, if you use Twilight however, they can be booted from there. I waited a long time for that to become a thing and, now that it is, it was 100% worth the wait.
Dang dude those things hover around $150 pre owned and over $200 new or open box never used now. I regret not snagging the purple one before retail stopped selling them
Homebrew 3ds was the best choice i ever made. My favorite console hands down. And IMO so much more comfortable to play and hold than the switch. I sold mine just to collect more 3DS consoles.
This is so wholesome and Idk why but it is. Love modding hardware, love emulating games, have several 3DSeseses - I think I could do this. Thank you for this amazing content! 🥰
You absolutely can! I have zero modding experience and i did it in like 2 hours for both my 2ds xl and my dsi xl. It's really straightforward and is absolutely worth the effort
Thanks for the video, Wulff, but I'd like to point out some mistakes: -In the case of the 3DS, using the regular standalone emulators is a better solution than retroarch. -Never emulate GBA. Just use injected GBA games, since they run natively using the official emulator used for the ambassador games. There's a software to convert your roms to that format, but you can pretty much find a pack with the most important games anywhere on the internet -The SNES9x emulator is fine but since you're using a New 3DS, just inject roms on the official emulator, just like the GBA.
What does injected mean in the case of an injected gba game? Does it mean you just have to download a Rom and let the native gba do all the work for you or is it a specific type of download
@@itsmesteve1081 The GBA VC Injector is a program on PC that you can run GBA roms through. It converts them to a CIA file that you can slap on your SD card and then install directly to the 3DS.
@Malice You'll have more compatibility with GBA injections however, since it runs via actual hardware, SNES Injection is another story because it's pure emulation, but if you want more options, you can always use MGBA which has run flawlessly for me (atleast with Super Mario World Advance whatever and Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga) Or y'know just use your phone, that also works.
Something that wasn't mentioned is that if you have the New 3DS XL, you can go in the bios and enable an option that will force the 3DS to use the full specs of the better hardware on those games that existed before the new 3DS XL improvements to the CPU. For example the Dragon Quest 3DS titles run a lot smoother when played with this toggle on.
@@TheMonkeyBloke I haven't noticed any issues with any of the games I've played which is mostly RPGs and platformers. When I learned about this feature I searched around and saw someone claim that Rayman Origins would freeze with the overclocking on, but I didn't experience any crashes or lockups myself.
This thing saved 2021 for me. Hacking my 3DS changed EVERYTHING for me to the point where it essentially became my Switch replacement (minus certain few first parties I play on there).
Hey Wulff, if you haven’t already, I would recommend getting the Universal Updater. It has a full port of SM64 that runs natively on the 3DS. It runs smooth like butter, and has some extra feature that make ya smile a little. Universal Updater also has a WHOLE mess of other cool and neat tools and games. Stay safe.
@@osvaldaspaslauskas5040 its supposed to just be an updater for stuff like FBI (cia downloader) and other homebrew things, but it also has a bunch of little app you can tinker with. there is one app i downloaded that i like called "RGB" and if you launch the app, it turns on the led under the 3D slider, and makes it rainbow. the app then immediately crashes, but the light stays rainbow until your turn off the system. btw all of this is on a 3DS XL, so it might be different with the normal 3DS or the New 3DS/New 3DS XL. the 3DS that Wulff modded was a New 3DS XL, i think
Actually, if you use the right settings you can get most ps1 games running at full speed, I was able to get all of the crash bandicoot games to run at full speed.
Nice video Wulff! My only feedback is that you can use VC Injectors to set up all your retro games individually so you can just click on them from the home screen without having to launch Retroarch etc. Only downsides are that it basically bundles the emulator software together with the ROM itself so it takes up a bit more memory, also the 3DS has a hard coded limit of 300 titles (even using folders doesn't matter, you're limited to no more than 300 downloaded games period which is a very strange limitation).
It's a strange limitation until you realise the menu has to keep some amount of data in ram at all times (as it runs in the background most of the time while gaming). The more titles on the home screen the more images need to be stored in memory, the more memory it takes up. It could support more by careful culling of icons that don't need to be in memory right now, but that would require time and effort from Nintendo developers. And as very few users are ever likely to have more than 300 legitimately purchased games on one device at one time it probably wasn't important enough for Nintendo to invest that time and effort.
If I understand correctly, the hardware stack supports DS/GBA/GBC/GB games (almost?) natively. Since there is (hardly?) any hardware emulation necessary the games indeed run much better as an injected VC game. On “new” hardware it’s also possible to inject SNES titles.
Damn, I literally just finished setting up my PS Vita with homebrew firmware today, and now you're making me want to go out and get a secondhand 3DS too! There's just something special about being able to play games on (or close to) original hardware, and the PS Vita is able to play PSP and PS1 games flawlessly. Getting a 3DS might round out my collection tbh, before we enter a new age of handheld gaming as the steam decks begin to roll out. Hm... maybe I'll wait for their prices to come down a bit though
get both buddy, i have 3ds for 3ds and 2ds emulation, tried ps1 emulation on 3ds but it runs horrible, psvita is way better to emulate ps1 and psp game, so in the end of the day i get both and i dont need to buy any portable emulator made from china just like anbernic or other name out there, both already served the needs
You can get a 2ds for around $60. If you want to tinker with it first then that would be a cool way to do it. And then you can give it to your nephew or something lol. He'll be like holy shit my uncle is awesome
Remember, the 3DS has built in GBA hardware so you can just install/inject GBA roms. This is why the ambassador games could happen. They're not emulation. It does mean there's no save states (and sleep mode?), but that's the price for accuracy.
Are you sure? I thought they needed GBA slot to use the GBA Hardware since for the DS Lite you couldn't run GBA games natively through slot 1 but only through slot 2 but if that's true that they sound a way to game it work natively that would be awesome
@@prestonanderson1719 I'm talking about injecting ROM's using homebrew, not using cartridges. Aside from a cartridge slot, the 3DS has GBA hardware. The emulator the 10 Ambassador games use are using this GBA hardware. With homebrew injection, you can use Nintendo's GBA emulator and the hardware as well.
@@prestonanderson1719 And that's exactly why they play without emulation. It's literally using hardware and plays them natively. They play as perfect as if you put the cartridge in the 3DS.

Shoutout to that friend who's really excited to tell me about all the hard work they did tho. I learn stuff from it. And bro did some higher-than-average-difficulty stuff that bro deserves to be excited about it. Lol
The 3DS is very much worth modding. It easily has one of the best game libraries out there, so even if it doesn't run all retro games perfectly, it's still one of the best modded portable consoles out there imo with its vast game library. It just has so many great games to offer other than the mario, kirby, and all the mainstream games, especially if you're into JRPG
Acquired ROMs do not need a specialized software to handle. If it's a 3ds title, it can be installed via FBI (if in .cia format) For other emulated titles it's just as easy as setting up file infrastructure for your games, and point the emulators in question to their dedicated game folders. Edit: I should also mention, you showed the QR code method of installation in your video. There's a great program on Windows called "Boop" that utilizes this to install any of your .cia files still on your PC. Big recommend! I've modded like eight of these things, is it obvious? Haha! 😊🔆
@@retrogamingindo4238 what? I said the exact opposite. Most people should use FBI to install .cia files. For those with Windows PCs, however, "Boop" allows you to send and install .cia files directly from a PC (and the QR scan function in FBI)
There's a native Mario 64 port on 3DS that plays perfectly. It's based on the PC port that uses the original source code. It's even in widescreen, which makes it a better option than what Nintendo offered in Mario 3D All-Stars.
I just want to mention that something you can do to also play your ROMs instead of using RetroArch or even an emulator, is use Ultimate VC Injector. It turns any rom into a Virtual Console game. This will work for NES/SNES/Genesis-MD/PCE/GB/GBC/GBA/PS1/etc. (Hell you know what can run on VC lol) It won't work for N64, I'm pretty sure. Running SNES and PS1 games using this method is INSANELY better. Both of those require a New 3DS of course, but you already have one so no prob. (I haven't tested the SNES9X emulator so in reality I can't tell you if VC would be better, but I can for a fact say PS1 definitely is)
This even works on some rom hacks! I tried a bunch and some didn't boot on my new3ds but "Invictus" worked (smw hack) and the VC injector thingy allowed me to have the proper name and screenshot show up on the VC icon home menu. lol
I've used both snes9x and VC injection and the main difference is that snes9x can handle the EU / PAL games that the official emulator can't handle. So for example Terranigma will run just fine in snes9x but won't run via injection. Otherwise they're practically identical except for a few very minor edge cases where one performs a little better than the other.
Wdym by that. NES/SNES/GB/GBC/GBA all can run on VC injects except with a few snes games that use a chip, but Genesis and PS1 don't run on VC, they run on forwarded emulators.
A couple weeks ago I modded my 3DS and it’s honestly one of the best decisions I’ve made recently. I don’t have an XL model so it’s definitely not perfect but damn, there’s so much you can do with it.
@@IAm-zo1bo How difficult is it/what tools do you need for it? I remember looking up some guides years ago that talked about having to buy some eshop software in order to set it up, is that still the case?
I never stopped! It's SUCH a good console! When you mod it, the possibilities are endless. Its a wonderful emulation box, and its library is the best, bar-none
An odd thing the 3DS can emulate that basically nothing else out there can is the Virtual Boy. An emulator called Red Viper allows for you to play Virtual Boy games with 3D effects fully working. Yeah, sure, the Virtual Boy isn't exactly a beloved Nintendo system but the 3DS is about the only system that can truly let you experience these games with the 3D effect they were designed for.
Love to see more videos about the 3DS from my fav channels 👏🏼 I’ve been loving revisiting this handheld again lately. The games are still sooo good plus backwards compatibility.
while there are GBA emulators for the 3ds and they are really convinient. the 3DS GBA Virtual console (ambassador games) don't use emulation, they run natively on the 3ds's 2nd cpu. it's more work to inject a rom into the GBA Virtual console but if you love a specific game it's worth it since games run virtually perfectly on it
@@realthemariogamer Yeah the ARM11 is the 3DS' main CPU while the ARM9 & ARM7 are reserved for DS backwards compatibility. Not an uncommon practice tbh. The PS2 also had its own CPU alongside the PS1's original CPU (used for backwards compatibility and as a small co-processor).
The 3ds emulation scene is awesome. You can play almost any retro system along with many arcade games like cps1 cps2 and neo geo using an injector to install the games.
Modding let me finally complete every nintendo zelda game in existence given the fact i was only missing the experience for four swords adventures and now its just my dedicated 2D/N64 zelda system
As others have pointed out, you missed one of the biggest appeals of modding 3DS: injecting ROMs (especially GBA). I modded my 3DS last year, but I just can't get behind the ergonomics of the clamshell form factor. So, I gave the modded 3DS to a young kid in my family that is a big Pokemon fan (3DS plays Gens 1-7). Recently, I've toyed around with the idea of getting a modded Wii U (I was not actively gaming during the Wii U generation). While the Switch has most of the notable Wii U games, the Wii U can natively run GameCube and Wii games and can emulate basically every other Nintendo system (besides 3DS) through VC, VC injection, or RetroArch. I probably won't pull the trigger though. I already have a modded Vita and RG351, but I mostly just end up thinking: "Why am I not just playing on my Switch?". For handhelds at least, I think I've decided it's nice to have just a single, primary device where most of my save data progress is, rather than juggling a bunch of different handhelds.
Damn dude. I just modded my 3DS yesterday. 😂 The nice thing about doing a mod like this is you don’t have to worry about region locking anymore (thanks to Luna) so you can even buy Japanese consoles, which seem cheaper than the domestic ones on eBay.
Really? I have a regular 3ds xl not the “new” one. I could get a Japanese “new” 3ds xl and understand it if I homebrew it? If so I’m definitely going to do that. I can get a Japanese one for almost half the price of the US ones.
@@chedoodles I don't own one, so I don't actually know if you can or not. I would imagine there probably is a setting for it considering how the domestic ones do have settings to change languages, iirc?
When it comes to NES-GBA titles, I would HIGHLY recommend using inject tools (or existing i injects) rather than messing around with RetroArch. Simple, easy, and quick to do if you get it right (which is VERY easy.)
Same. I mostly use an injection tool to install/run ROMs as Virtual Console games. Could never seem to get RetroArch to install properly to get the cores running and then to have the cores load the games. Also installed Snes9x for some SNES games that need better support for things like SuperFX. Originally modded mine to just dump my carts to SD so I didn't have to carry around all my carts or swap them when I wanted to play something else. Then some of the homebrew is really handy too, like backing up/copying game saves and offline PokeBanks.
Takes long time especially if u want a big list u have to install each rom individually kinda tedious while retroarch you can just install bulk of games and run them
@@osvaldaspaslauskas5040 setting up cores and running the roms in retroarch is much more tedious than just building a virtual console cia. trust me; it's worth it in the end, especially if it's native.
@@sherbftfy2287 eh I personally don't need it to be very accurate to original so in my experience I didn't need to setup cores they kinda just worked out of the box well for the GB GBA GBC because retroarch tweaks their cores and only adds I think the ones that support the 3ds system. I just moved cores I don't use to a folder and that made the boot up of retroarch very quick and puts a specific core on homescreen which u can boot up from and makes booting up even quicker. I also thought retroarch kinda sucked and complicated but got used to it and now most my roms run from it some ps1, Sega Master system, SNES, and systems mentioned above. So idk. The only thing I like about injecting is that u can have box art and have it look nice on home screen and work quicker I guess. But we all have preferences and I don't disagree with ur method I'd kinda wanna do it but I'm just lazy for it xd.
@@sherbftfy2287 I think the only virtual console game native to the system is GBA. But yeah, if I can I much rather have the game on virtual console than an emulator!
A very neat thing of using ds games on 3ds is that you can patch the ds mode to show titles in widescreen and even with an almost decent scaling. Not every title is supported for widescreen but when it works it's a really interesting feature
Legit one of my favorite systems and one I've been waiting since the DSi for it to be reliably and repeatedly moddable! This and the Wii U seem to be the kings of homebrew for now
im surprised bob didnt talk about the virtual console rom injection, thats a much better way of playing a lot of older consoles through Nintendo's virtual console right on the system. I don't even bother with emulators on the 3DS since their VC is actually really awesome.
@@realthemariogamer oh really? I never really cared enough to play games like that on my 3DS when I hacked it, mostly just installed ALTTP and SMW romhacks. Guess it would be worth keeping an emulator around then for games like those.
@@BadChocMilky Yeah, one of the first games i tried injecting was yoshi's island and super mario world, and i realized that yoshi's island doesn't work with the VC cause it uses the super fx chip. Same with super mario rpg.
You can save even more if you homebrew a Japanese 3ds, the menus will be in Japanese but it will still play roms from any region. You can even play cartridges from any region by using the location emulation feature (very easy, just copy the id number from your specific region game into a certain spot on the sd card). Japanese 3ds consoles are usually cheaper and in better condition than our US ones (a lot of us are apparently pretty rough with our devices, lol). And there lots of cool limited edition Japanese 3ds varriants.
I just moded my 2ds a few days ago and I'm pretty sure the guide Saif that after the molding there will no region lock anymore Didn't tried it tho because I like my games in my language
The thing is, the 3DS run GB, GBC, GBA, DS and 3DS natively and not through emulation (due to the hardware being backwards compatible) and there are injectors to make them appear on the main UI. If you have a New 3DS you can also inject SNES roms into the SNES virtual console emulator (which works great). Same goes for NES, GG, PCE. You can also download native ports of Super Mario 64, Quake 1-3, Doom, Half-Life. etc. I think this video undersells the capabilities of the 3DS modding scene. Because in most cases you actually don't use many emulators. but rather run things natively, or through Nintendo's own emulation software (which is accurate and highly efficient) I also really like the SEGA Fukoku Archives 1-3, tons of SEGA games that have been converted into 3D! And also. It has Virtual Boy! WITH 3D, and it works GREAT!
Also PS1 can be made to run really well with the right settings and the iso's in the right format. Finally, Mario 64 can be compiled using the PC port and made to run at 60 fps in 3D (!) on the N3DS.
@@astorMorisson THAT'S WHAT IM SAYING. Everybody in the comment section says that ps1 runs bad on new 3ds when there not even using the right settings. I was able to get all the crash bandicoot games to run full speed on here.
I personally love playing Citra on PC, if you got a decent enough build you can scale the resolution to whatever you like. No other way to play the first 3d zeldas imo, OOT 3d and MM 3d look like new remakes in 1080p.
@@DaiSenshiMounir Yeah it’s honestly ridiculous how omega ruby and alpha sapphire look better than brilliant diamond and shining pearl when they’re upscale
OOT and MM3D look amazing on a PC with an xbox controller, and its my preferred way to play those games. games with primarily touch input however are a pain to play on PC. Phantom Hourglass and Spirit tracks were cumbersome, which is why I finally dusted off my old 3DS and modded it a couple months ago. Just can't beat original hardware for those types of titles.
Touchscreen laptop + dualsense + external monitor is the best setup for citra. With the gyro and the touchscreen you get almost all of the functionality of the 3ds. Still cumbersome for some touch-heavy 3ds games tho. Need og hardware for the best experience sometimes.
I swear, you definitely should have a million subs at least. Everything is so polished and professional, it’s incredible! Also, thanks for the free samples; I’ve got some coming a few days from now!
Like it has already been mentioned, for GBA, GB, etc the virtual console injector works better than emulators. Also, I found ths NDSforwarder to be muchs faster and simpler than twilightmenu.
Fun fact: You can even get GTA 3 on your 3ds. Did it on my New 3DS and it was a crazy experience. I don't think I'll actually play it on it but many have said that they have. Pretty amazing.
Hey Bob, thanks for this video. I really appreciated this, as I was hospitalized recently for a couple days. I couldn't bring my Switch (OBVIOUSLY because I would have deprived my son of his ONLY means of just doing anything) so i borrowed his 3DS XL (old model) and Homebrewed it. I installed tons of games and was able to spend my days in a hospital bed playing retro games and getting nurses to give me spongebaths. Ya made my day homey!! But, sincerely, thank you, keep up your good work, I love your content and your attitude, you rock!
Side note for ds roms: If you only care to play ds games and not 3ds, i would hack a dsi instead of a 3ds. When the 3ds is running a ds game it has to refit the resolution of the ds screen to the 3ds, making games just a tad blurry. There is a button combo to unfit the screen, but you then have a bunch of blank screen surrounding the game. Running on a dsi will show the games much more crisp. If you dont already have a ds but a you do have a 3ds, or you are interested in running 3ds cias as well as ds roms, i would just go ahead hacking a 3ds since its not too much of a deal breaker and you probably wont notice it until you see the same game run on both 3ds and ds. If your a sucker for visual quality a dsi is your best bet, and not harder to mod at all from my experience.
I actually loved the 3d and kept it on, Ridge Racer looked bloody awesome and games like Super Mario 3d land it came in handy on the harder levels because I could actually see how far the jump was.
We love both our modded 3DS's and it was an educational process learning how to do them. I highly recommend trying it sometime if you own an old 3DS already. We didi both models btw, original 3DS and "New 3DS". That one even plays a little version of minecraft.

Without ur vid suddenly popping up I'd prolly never have modded my new 3ds xl, I could never get games on it cause my dad wasn't willing to buy games but I managed to play thru all my favourite DS games thru an r4 card. I played thru all the good DS games and I rlly wanted to try out 3ds games but could never get any games. And then my L and R buttons got damaged and I stopped playing with it for a while. After this vid I immediately looked at the suggestions and stuff u gave and I've been having a blast with it all over again, I can't thank u enough and ever since I've been watching ur vids. its definitely worth it . My cousin did his 3ds and it made me get a 3ds so he could do it for me and now I’m playing Pokémon ranger and any ds game I want . Lol
gave my modded new 2ds xl to my sister, and i miss it a lot. nowadays, new 2ds xls are heavily inflated and it's insane. i was thinking of just getting a refurbished 3ds and this video popped up in my feed. crazy stuff
Inject your SNES or GBA roms as Virtual Console .cias, they have perfect compatibility then mGBA has a seperate app all the same and it's better than RetroArch's offerings
I have the old 3ds XL and the modding was very easy to the fact that I even modded a friend's 2ds with the same instructions that I did for my old 3ds xl and it was perfect. You made a couple of things more difficult as like well you can inject CIA's (convert roms to cias and use FBI to install them which would act like a virtual emulator and etc) and you wouldn't have had those issues but this video is a good start to if like you said if you have a 3ds just laying around and wondered if you can play certain games on there.
Was your 3ds the older edition? I have the older edition of the 3DS XL which has a different layout of the back, and doesn't seem to have a micro SD card. I'm trying to find out if anyone has modded their old version haha
@@moss9700 yes mine is the older one where you need to use a sd adapter(you'll see the slot on the side of the console). You can buy a micro sd with the adapter on amazon for like 10-20$ if anything
@@TheBattlesOfAllTime ahhh okay thank you, I managed to get a micro usb and an adapter, but I'm too scared to try it if I don't know what I'm doing haha, I don't want to risk damaging anything. Tysm though:)
You could also play roms using the 3DS's Virtual Console emulator, you just have to use virtual console inhection software on your computer to convert each rom to an individual cia to download. It's much more of a hassle than keeping all your roms in a folder on your SD card, but you're using official Nintendo emulators and I personally like having all the games individually on my home screen
@@skycloud4802 The hard part is really just legally obtaining the roms. The software will just ask you for the rom file, the information that will show up on the home screen, and a few customization options. It is idiot proof. The vast majority, but not all roms have perfect compatibility with the Virtual Console emulator though, but that's when you use forwarders. Forwarders will still install the game on your home screen like a virtual console game, but will instead open the rom in a retroarch emulator. I even have a few Genesis and PS1 games on my home screen using forwarders. Of course, as with all modding, do all this at your own risk.
Last summer I ordered a Japanese "New" 3DS LL (XL = LL) for around $120. Was complete in box and in great condition. I recommend looking for a Japanese version for a cheaper price and better condition. Modding it is necessary to remove the region lock but I was planning to mod it anyways. My only problem with the 3DS line of systems is DS and retro games scale horribly.
@@emilian0e True, but then you're left with a much smaller image, at least on the XL versions. The way DS games looked on my 3DS XL bothered me so much that I ended up buying a DSi XL to mod. DS games look great on those IPS screens. =)
*Looks over at stack of 6 3DS systems* Soon... Soon... Also, if you really want to play SM64 on a modded 3DS, you should check out the native version that got released a few months ago.
I never watch videos for things like this. Not only that they often go out of date but it's way easier to follow a text guide. Especially for 3DS CFW because the guides are really good.
I was only able to comfortably hold the 3DS after getting a grip for it. Even that only helped so much because of the shoulder buttons. If anyone else has similar issues with comfort and wants to play something on the 3DS that makes heavy use of the shoulder buttons (especially the ZL and ZR buttons) then I recommend trying to find a grip that moves the placement of those. I bought a Japanese-only Hori grip off of ebay (Monster Hunter XX branded) and it makes a HUGE difference.
Minutes after unboxing my O3DS XL I modded it with Luma CFW I remember it was during the transition to GodMode9, and I still love it today. I especially love the Rom Hacks now for a lot of the games on it. I mainly play Pokemon, but have a lot of fun playing my Zelda, and Metroid collection too

3ds is so underrated. Here's a few other neat things I can recommend using if for:
-GBA virtual console isnt exactly emulation. It's running (mostly) natively using the DS's backwards compatibility. There are a few functions that are emulated, but it's mostly running natively. You can use rom injection to play basically any GBA game, and apply a patch to remove the dark filter.
-snes virtual console on the new 3ds run really well, and even has a pixel perfect mode
-there is a port of the super Mario 64 pc port for 3ds that runs fantastic on new 3ds. The build I played used both the left eye and right eye pixels in 2d mode, making it have double the horizontal screen resolution of a normal 3ds game! It looks really, really good.
That's a weird way to use the 3ds screen, I never saw any game do that. Sounds neat!
No wonder that Mario 64 port looks so dang crisp
An alternative to using GBA injects is open_gba_firm which really uses ONLY the built in GBA hardware :-)
So I've been wondering how to get the PC port onto my 3ds. I've got it modded already but I couldn't find a good guide a year ago.
actually I found a guide now.
Yessir! I love seeing a bigger youtuber talking about the 3DS again! I've recently bought a new one just to mod, and one of the main things I want to try and push is for everyone to start using streetpass again!!
How are you gonna use street pass on your “modded” 3ds?
I miss street pass so much. Such a great idea for a handheld.
@@herleyaw Streetpass is safe to use on modded 3DSes (heck even online multiplayer is safe, nintendo didn't really invest on mod detection until the switch)
To those asking, Streetpass is already built into the system, much like still using the online multiplayer on the system, it's still safe to use

(Best thing is that it's cheaper and more portable lol.) For what It's worth I also kept the 3D on with my launch 3DS, but it was certainly more of a hassle when playing in unusual positions or places. You absolutely can! I have zero modding experience and i did it in like 2 hours for both my 2ds xl and my dsi xl. It's really straightforward and is absolutely worth the effort
Thanks for the video, Wulff, but I'd like to point out some mistakes:
-In the case of the 3DS, using the regular standalone emulators is a better solution than retroarch.
-Never emulate GBA. Just use injected GBA games, since they run natively using the official emulator used for the ambassador games. There's a software to convert your roms to that format, but you can pretty much find a pack with the most important games anywhere on the internet
-The SNES9x emulator is fine but since you're using a New 3DS, just inject roms on the official emulator, just like the GBA.
But snes games that use the super fx and sa-1 chip don't work with the offical vc emulator, you have to use snes9x.
If you want to inject pal snes game it will not work since the emulator that the 3ds uses is ntsc locked
@Malice You'll have more compatibility with GBA injections however, since it runs via actual hardware, SNES Injection is another story because it's pure emulation, but if you want more options, you can always use MGBA which has run flawlessly for me (atleast with Super Mario World Advance whatever and Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga)
Or y'know just use your phone, that also works.

@@osvaldaspaslauskas5040 its supposed to just be an updater for stuff like FBI (cia downloader) and other homebrew things, but it also has a bunch of little app you can tinker with. there is one app i downloaded that i like called "RGB" and if you launch the app, it turns on the led under the 3D slider, and makes it rainbow. the app then immediately crashes, but the light stays rainbow until your turn off the system. btw all of this is on a 3DS XL, so it might be different with the normal 3DS or the New 3DS/New 3DS XL. the 3DS that Wulff modded was a New 3DS XL, i think
its overall a very cool app though, so if you have the time, you should definitely check it out!
@@loveisvylence ah thank you could you please post a link to the app I should install
Actually, if you use the right settings you can get most ps1 games running at full speed, I was able to get all of the crash bandicoot games to run at full speed.
@@JustMLC Yes i used a new 3ds, you can look up "full speed ps1 emulation on 3ds" and find a reddit post.
I'll always love my 3ds because as one of the rare 0.0001% of people who love the 3D effect and still use it today, nothing can properly emulate that
I did this mod around december and I love how simple it was, being able to launch my backups from my sd card is so amazing
Might not hurt to check your local pawn shops. Might find a 3ds at a decent price there sometimes.
I'm totally going to do this for the Vita at some point.
get both buddy, i have 3ds for 3ds and 2ds emulation, tried ps1 emulation on 3ds but it runs horrible, psvita is way better to emulate ps1 and psp game, so in the end of the day i get both and i dont need to buy any portable emulator made from china just like anbernic or other name out there, both already served the needs
They're not coming down for a while, their prices are steadily on the rise at the moment so get one now or you might miss out.
Also I think you can do save states and sleep mode on a EZ Flash Cart which works on a GBA so I'm not sure why it shouldn't work on a 3DS but idk
@@EnigmaBarry I know but it's a bit strange how they kept the GBA Hardware still in the 3DS
@@prestonanderson1719 And that's exactly why they play without emulation. It's literally using hardware and plays them natively. They play as perfect as if you put the cartridge in the 3DS.
You get my respect instantly for talking about the 3DS again. I’m currently working on my 3DS video. Finally after an entire year of laptop shenanigans, college planning, etc.

I think you've convinced me to do it. I was really avoiding messing with my 3DS but you've given me the courage to go ahead and do it.
it's real ez bro I did it, impossible to brick unless you're actually dumb, don't worry
Haha! 😊🔆
You can also download vc games in a .cia forrmat.
so what you just said is you dont need to install cia file via fbi in your 3ds? how?
@@retrogamingindo4238 what? I said the exact opposite. Most people should use FBI to install .cia files. For those with Windows PCs, however, "Boop" allows you to send and install .cia files directly from a PC (and the QR scan function in FBI)
@BurntBridge And you can also trim the files that way. Save a few hundred megabytes.
Is there an alternative to the QR code method ? Because the camera of my 3DS is dead
Haven't touched my Switch or PC since I modded my 3ds
Its a crazy system once you realize the library if games thst exist
Why would turning a rom into a Virtual Console game be better?
This won't work for certain SNES titles like Super Mario RPG
Wdym by that. NES/SNES/GB/GBC/GBA all can run on VC injects except with a few snes games that use a chip, but Genesis and PS1 don't run on VC, they run on forwarded emulators.
A couple weeks ago I modded my 3DS and it’s honestly one of the best decisions I’ve made recently. I don’t have an XL model so it’s definitely not perfect but damn, there’s so much you can do with it.

I absolutely loved the 3-D function. It was incredibly immersive and games like ocarina of time and majoris mask.
The games are still sooo good plus backwards compatibility.

while there are GBA emulators for the 3ds and they are really convinient. the 3DS GBA Virtual console (ambassador games) don't use emulation, they run natively on the 3ds's 2nd cpu. it's more work to inject a rom into the GBA Virtual console but if you love a specific game it's worth it since games run virtually perfectly on it
WHAT THERE'S TWO CPUS ON THE 3DS!? I did not know that wow.
@@VexAcer yeah I also believe the Wii U does the same thing with one reserved for Wii U functions and a separate one dedicated to vWii mode

Great ad lol my best so far out of the Wullfden Cinematic Universe

I can get a Japanese one for almost half the price of the US ones.
is there a way to change the language to English?
This and the Wii U seem to be the kings of homebrew for now
I recently modded my original chonky 3ds with a broken 3d slider so its stuck in 3d all the time, with a 128gb sd card and I love it
This video was incredibly informative thank you so much. It's something I've wondered about for quite a while and you just gave me an outlet.
im surprised bob didnt talk about the virtual console rom injection, thats a much better way of playing a lot of older consoles through Nintendo's virtual console right on the system. I don't even bother with emulators on the 3DS since their VC is actually really awesome.
Unfortunately, snes games that use the sa-1 or super fx chip doesn't work with the official vc emulator.
VC rom injection is the truth. Works fantastically with rom hacks like Pokémon Cloud White, Pokémon Snakewood, Pokemon Rocket edition, etc
Only emulator im getting is the snes one for Yoshi's Island and anything else I can't inject into SNES virtual console. Other than that it is amazing!
I just moded my 2ds a few days ago and I'm pretty sure the guide Saif that after the molding there will no region lock anymore
Didn't tried it tho because I like my games in my language
2:24 that music paired with the intro graphics is too slick. Had to replay it a couple times. Editor must be proud of that one
One small note is that when you use the GBA VC injector you're technically not emulating GBA. It's running natively on the hardware through DS mode.

I have citra but I really want the portability. If my local game store has a cheap 3DS, may just grab it

Yeah, its really great! Works perfectly on my New 3DS!
@@Lizuma I heard it runs at 60fps on New systems. Is that true?
@@Level1Sword It is! You can even move up the 3D slider and see it in 3D!! I'm so impressed by it!
I never watch videos for things like this. Not only that they often go out of date but it's way easier to follow a text guide. Especially for 3DS CFW because the guides are really good.
this is really sick, i have a new 2ds xl that is laying on the shelf since probably 2019, now i can do something with it
I've been using my 3ds again and then it's announced to be delisted 😔
I mainly play Pokemon, but have a lot of fun playing my Zelda, and Metroid collection too
One of the only guys whose ads I always watch. I genuinely enjoy them
