Its good to see that I am not the only one that gets excited to see the fish in the moats at the zoo. next time you go there can you please send the mollies to Australia for me thanks
as I've observed best and healthiest fish were from big ponds that mimics natural habitat, are they being fed by zoo staff? or they are just being let to graze on, and algae as their primary food
I need to check out the Ala Moana canal too to see if I can find some sailfin mollies too. Last time I was there, I couldn't find the mollies. I only saw tilapia and convict cichlids.
Okay, I see. Thanks for clarification. Yes, I recall Liberty Mollies, with some nice larger males with the red-black-white dorsals, and blue iridescence on flanks. But... Decades ago, before tilapia overtook that canal, the canal was FULL of silver and marbled sailfin mollies. It was incredible.
I actually saved feeder guppies from being eaten by larger predatory fish from the fish store that i really like to go to, and they are breeding now in my aquarium =D BTW i don't care how dull their colors are and because they are feeder guppies it means that their colors are more natural . =D
Surface area is the main aspect here. That's were O2 is absorbed, and CO2 given off. It's not stagnant, there is water movement, it's slow, but it moves. There's silt at the bottom, but that in itself is not a bad thing. I've got 2 gallon pots of soil in my tubs for my water lilies.
I know this is old but some could call them algae eaters in their own right because Mollies and guppies also eat Algae as a natural part of their diet. Along with the other factors already mentioned, this and the successful different types of breeding going on here, not to mention their Size, these fish appear to be thriving !
I have a question. My guppy has given birth to some fry about 2 weeks ago. She already looks very pregnant last time I checked on her. How long does it usually take for a guppy to give birth a second time? I know that they usually become pregnant right after the first birth.
So I breed guppies and I had a batch of fry that are now fully grown, they are F1 generation,so F2 would be if there parents had another batch of fry right? So if there's F1 and F2,and I were to breed the F1 generation, would the fry they make be called F1 as well?
If your original parents keep having fry, they'd all be F1. If you now breed your F1 fish, their fry would be the F2. In other words, your original parents are the grandparents of the F2 fish.
Mosquitos do lay eggs in the tubs, but no mosquitos are able to develop in the tubs because guppies and gouramis are effective at finding the eating all the mosquito larvae. Plus, I don't have much plants for the larvae to hide in. I don't even see larvae in the tubs.
No currently. It's been over a year since I last sold there. There were a couple of guys working in the Fish department who would call me whenever they had tank space. They moved on and no longer work there. I continue to sell to Enchanted Lakes Pet Center in Kailua. Last drop off of Sunset Micariffs was this past Saturday. The owner combined my Sunsets with some equally nice looking All-Yellow Micariffs. Good amount in stock now. Also, the cross breeds that appear in my other videos are there at this time as well.
Kaimuki Backyard are you the one that recently supplied enchanted lakes with the pure black guppies?? I got to talk with the young wahine that works there. She was very helpful and i liked my conversation with her. She told me that the guppies were local bred. They are featured in one of my latest videos where i disagreed with Cory of aquarium co-op about him having the most beautiful guppies and i have the most beautiful guppies. Unfortunately there were no females. Do you happen to sell guppies and any other livebearers to local people? I live in Wahiawa and would like to know if that would be possible. Mahalo for your time. When I lived in Asia, I used to have a gibbon as a pet. His name was Charlie and he worn diaper. He would wrap his arms and legs around me and we went to the market together. His left leg has deformity so we couldn't release him.
Sadly people are dumping tilapia in every pond and lake on the islands and ruining once nice tropical ponds and gardens. Happening everywhere in the states too. Same people that over fish and plant un native plants and like Ivory tusks.
Yes, very sad indeed. The tilapia, convict cichlids, Plecostomus-- all of those types wipe out everything else. And you're right, more sad than the fish are all the large animals in serious trouble because of man's ridiculous wants incentivizing poaching (elephants, rhinos, tigers, on and on...)

The zoo really needs to add more pond plants, such as water lotus and lilies.
Perhaps...
Wow that's so awesome!

Didn't see sailfins, but tons of those Liberty mollies. Some males had white dorsal fins though, besides the usual red ones.

If you wanted to get rid of your guppies, is there any place you can give them to?
You'll can ask your local pet stores.
Mahalo!! (-:
So big molies
Yes, many 4 inches, some larger
They are really soooooooooooooo nice kaimuki
:-)
How do those fish survive in that filthy water though? And I have to keep it all clean and do water changes and shit....
To our senses, it may appear "dirty", but biologically, with it's huge surface area, the water is more suitable for fish better than an aquarium.
How does the surface affect it? Isn't it poor in oxygene because it's stagnant? And it also looks muddy.

Anywhere from 23 to 35-ish days, depending on temperature. Actually, she's already impregnated for the next several broods.
So I breed guppies and I had a batch of fry that are now fully grown, they are F1 generation,so F2 would be if there parents had another batch of fry right? So if there's F1 and F2,and I were to breed the F1 generation, would the fry they make be called F1 as well?

How cold do your guppy ponds get? It gets to about 12c here in winter and I want to get a guppy pond
Maybe like 21°C for a day or two at a time. But if it is sustained for several days, this is too cold for guppies.
I have one question, somehow it has nothing to do with the fish , but water lily , may I know how do we get the seeds from the water lily ?
Leave the flowers on, after it dies, and seeds will form.
Thanks a lot.
the guppies back at your home in the tubs, how do u keep misquotes from laying their eggs in the water of the tubs
Mosquitos do lay eggs in the tubs, but no mosquitos are able to develop in the tubs because guppies and gouramis are effective at finding the eating all the mosquito larvae. Plus, I don't have much plants for the larvae to hide in. I don't even see larvae in the tubs.
They r so friendly
:-)
Hanolulu Zoo its in hawaii right or it only name?
