    To be fair to the PS1 version of Vampire Savior, it did offer something that the Saturn version didn't have: multiple rosters.
    For those who don't know, Vampire Savior was initially too big to fit onto a CPS2 board, so three of the characters from the previous games had to get cut (Donovan, Huitzel, and Pyron). Realizing that they could use this to their advantage, Capcom decided to pull a "Final Fight: Guy Edition" and released two more modified versions exclusively for Japanese arcades - Vampire Savior 2 (which omits Jon Talbain, Rikuo, and Sasquatch in order to bring back the three missing characters) and Vampire Hunter 2 (which has the exact same roster as Nightwarriors: Darkstalkers Revenge, removing the new characters introduced in VS). All three versions were compiled together for the PS1 as Darkstalkers 3, and this was the only way to have all the characters at once until the PS2 and PSP games.

      Luu Sapphire Capcom knew where to put their development during that generation. Capcom knew that their 3D games would be best suited on the PlayStation (Resident Evil, Star Gladiator, Street Fighter EX, Rival Schools, Dino Crisis, Mega Man Legends), and that their 2D games would be best on Saturn (X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, Vampire Savior, Street Fighter Zero 3, etc.). The Nintendo 64 only got one Capcom game that I remember, Mega Man 64 which was just a port of the ultra disappointing Mega Man Legends for PlayStation.

      Precisely. If only Sega would have realised the same, and ported EVERY 2D sprite-based Arcade hit to the Saturn - plus sequels of the biggest Mega Drive games.
      They really made a mess. Saturn was their Neo Geo + 3D, and they wasted it.

      Check them again - the MD versions of SFII are really decent ports. MK3 is also a really decent port by Sculptured. The Probe ports of I and II are crap, though.
      The SNES version of Super SFII is pretty poor. The sound is awful and it doesn't look too great. They clearly ran out of space on the cartridge. Really the MD version pulls its weight side by side with the SNES SFII games. They only messed up the audio samples on the Mega Drive.

    • @gedaman
      @gedaman 4 роки тому

      Alan Lee Although the PlayStation and Saturn versions of the Street Fighter Alpha series games play the same, the animation and overall presentation is slightly better in the Saturn just like all 2D games. Street Fighter Alpha 2 also had bonus artwork available on the Saturn. You also had the perfect arcade style 6 button layout A, B, C, X, Y, Z with the Saturn game pad.
      With Street Fighter Zero 3 Capcom developed it completely differently from the PlayStation version and even the Dreamcast version. The Saturn version is the closest to the arcade version before Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection came out in 2018. Oddly Capcom chose to port the PlayStation version of the game to the Dreamcast. The PlayStation and Dreamcast versions were the best versions that the West would receive until Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection came out in 2018.
      The difference between the Saturn and PlayStation versions of X-Men vs. Street Fighter and Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter are just night and day of course too.

    Pocket Fighter is one of my favourite flighters, period. The whimsy is right up my alley and it helps take a game from a genre normally taken pretty seriously, especially by the contenders, and just injects all the fun.
    Pocket Fighter takes what would often be all the little details that give a game it's flavour and puts them on full display and mostly for anyone to see. Chun Li dressing up as Jill Valentine, or delivering a love note as a school girl. Even the mighty Akuma cannot escape the costume game. In fact the only character that does is Ryu, because that's the only way to make fun of his super serious nature.
    The game is awesome. It's awesome that Capcom actually made it and it's extra awesome that to go with the Chibi look that Capcom made it an easy fighter to pick up and play, even the most novice of novice players could pull off combos and even special moves, with its simplified button and control system. However of course being Capcom there is more depth for those more experienced with their flighters.
    Get this game where ever you can. You owe it to yourself and the player 2 in your life that doesn't play fighters because 'they are no good at them'

The Saturn was designed originally to be a 2D games only console until late in the development when Sega found out that Sony was launching the PlayStation with Ridge Racer and Tekken that Sega decided to add in 3D graphics processing at the last moment for the Saturn supposedly. I find it a little hard to believe that Sega had 3D graphics as a low priority for Saturn since they had just developed 3D arcade titles such as Virtua Fighter and Daytona USA only a year before the Saturn release in Japan, but it does explain why 2D games were so superior and 3D games looked a little bit better on PlayStation such as Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, and Die Hard Trilogy.

    I've said many times, but SFA3 on Saturn is the most impressive game in terms of graphics and game play of the entire 32 bit era. Few 3D games from SS/PS1/N64 hold up and this one still looks and plays great compared to any other 2D game. On top of the looks, it's one of the best playing games of all time. Agree with SLX that Vampire Savior looked just as good, but the gameplay of SFA3 takes it to the next level.

Probably my best purchase in hindsight would have to be getting Zero 3 even though by then I had the Japanese PS1 and Dreamcast versions. The reason why these Capcom and SNK did not come to the west is because 3D was all the rage! Which makes sense if you think about 4-5 years of 2D beat em ups and side scrolling games of 8/16/32 bit, it was welcome change to go 3D as it had more depth in play hence why most 3d beat em ups came to the console in all regions. Gun.smoke arcade is great but BRUTAL. I have a playthrough up on the channel and im only about 1/2 way through. Doesnt help that I died at most of the checkpoints and had to do them all without any starting power ups. Its one of those old games that really seems designed around not dying so that you keep your power ups. Its a game that was really designed to use the original arcade joystick layout. Mainly because you really need an overhand position on the firing buttons to switch between the 3 directions super quickly. Its the only arcade game that I will only play with a joystick when playing on emulation.

      ua-cam.com/video/V1l4ych1opg/v-deo.html

With the 6th boss its gotten to the point where I load the boss area state, fail as soon as I take my hand off the keyboard, reload again and die immediately again. Im looking into having save and load states mapped to my joystick before going back, for practicing. Insane game.

    First, great work here, SLX. I didn't notice at first that they were fighting on the SIDE of a building in that one stage in Vampire Savior. When I saw the helicopter, I realized what the stage was. It's an interesting concept in a game that doesn't need to be as serious as Street Fighter. I prefer that kind of creativity to all the excess motion I thought they did when going to 3D backgrounds.
    3 Wonders is pretty cool with Roosters/Midnight Wanderers being particularly good. It felt a lot like Ghouls 'n' Ghosts in its structure. It's a good game. The others aren't bad either.
    I wasn't quite as happy as you with X-Men vs. Street Fighter. Part of it was the roster, especially with Street Fighter side. Dhalsim? I also already didn't find Street Fighter Alpha appealing. I was a few years past the point when I soured on Marvel. I did play and enjoy Marvel Super Heroes, but I didn't love the characters at the time. Maybe if I hadn't gotten Marvel Super Heroes, the novelty of X-Men vs. Street Fighter would have made it better for me. I did like it. The sprites were awesome quality as were the backgrounds. It had neat play mechanics. But there were things I didn't like as much. I think Capcom was going in a direction I didn't love. I got interested in KOF '97 shortly after. I still play that one and just played it last night.
    I know Capcom's D&D games have a lot of fans. And I absolutely love many of Capcom's beat-em-up games. I even love Dynasty Wars, which isn't quite a beat-em-up game(I just consider it an action game), but I find it super fun. Both the D&D games felt a bit off to me. I think part of it was the new features which led to clunky controls, specifically dealing with the menu and crouching. The crouching is a bit awkward. The music might have also been less energetic than the likes of Alien vs. Predator or Cadillacs & Dinosaurs. I would never call them bad games, but I lack the enthusiasm for them that other have. I know of others who had my reaction. Ultimately, we're not always going to like the same things, and I'm just sharing my view and have no desire to change any minds. If anything, I just want people to know that the D&D games are different enough from the other Capcom beat-em-ups that people know. Clearly, I like my beat-em-ups straightforward. I know there are people who don't like the genre and find it boring and repetitive, so I know how it is when people don't like the thing I like, so I respect the positive views of the D&D games. They're well made with great pixel art for sure and some clever ideas. There's just something about their structure that didn't work for me. I wish I liked them more, as more Capcom beat-em-ups is a good thing.

    • @SegaLordX
      @SegaLordX  4 роки тому

      I think the D&D games benefit heavily from 2 or more players at the same time. That's when the game really shines. Playing it alone really takes a toll on the fun factor. When the difficulty ramps up, it becomes more a strategy game as opposed to a straight brawler.

    • @ravagingwolverine
      @ravagingwolverine 4 роки тому

      @@SegaLordX That's what I assumed. I prefer when beat-em-ups can provide an experience that scales well from one player to whatever the game's max is. As said, I did have a few issues with some of the mechanics, but the games are well made. They just have a totally different vibe from other beat-em-ups, so they may not resonate with fans of the genre, though plenty of people do like them. Thanks for replying.

Further, I wish Sega had ported both games over to the Sega Dreamcast. I know both games would fit on one disk and the Dreamcast could do the arcade version in its entirety without breaking a sweat.
    Addendum- While I purchased both 2d D&D arcade games on XBLA for my Xbox One and Xbox One X....I don't think they made the cut for the Series X. The other Sega Saturn/arcade properties made it thankfully just not the D&D titles. I wish Sega would continue producing Saturn/arcade games for XBLA/Switch but alas it seems as if they have stopped.
