- My trip to Birmingham had me depressed about the state of the country. It seemed like most people have accepted that the cities in England are now cesspits, full of rubbish, hardcore D*ug use and segregated living.
I decided to take a trip to Newcastle to see if there is any hope for English cities in 2024.
Disclaimer: It was bank holiday easter Friday so it was quiet out. Plus the metro was closed for works, scuppering my plans. I'll go back in the summer for another look.
I like how the guy in the pub went from a loud drunk, or radgie as the Geordies would say, into delivering very sensible and level headed advice about navigating through life haha

@mutts.nutts1 people are quick to judge with only seeing a snippet of that person, he seems like a good enough lad abit rough around the edges but his heart is in the right place and that's all that counts.

Hebburn is 1 giant housing estate now and new builds popping up every 5 minutes on what used to be farmers fields and green belt. I remember as a kid having horses on fields where houses now are. As for Newtown... It's a mere shadow of what it used to be in the 80s and 90s.
Newcastle is the Northernmost city in England, it gets winds straight from the Steppes of Siberia, but the women there wear the least clothes of any city in Britain.

Northumberland, and Tyne and Wear have some incredible history and scenery that is overlooked in favour of what's down south, which us northerners aren't too bothered about. The whole of the UK is pretty unique, it would take a lot of time to discover just what these islands have to offer.
Shields Rd isn't as bad as the West rd, thats where you should have gone...the area has been
"Enriched" in recent years by the increasing number of doctors, engineers etc that have made it their home.
Blame the Tories and London Labourites for spreading them around the country. Nothing wrong in settling them in Kensington or Richmond upon Thames, eh.

Im from newcastle and absolutley love living here iv worked around the whole uk and have never seen a place that has what we have we have a city centre with everything , we have one of the most amazing coastlines anywhere and so many country retreats , 90% of the people you meet who are locals will stop and help you if asked , the video stopped too soon i was gutted when it finished id deffo recommend visting the coastline and some places like whitley bay , tynemouth , alnwick , amble ect
maybee head all the way to bambrough castle to really see what the beauty of our area has

As someone who currently lives in Newcastle, grew up in Northumberland, have studied here for five years, the conversation you had with the Christian woman with the busker singing in the background was really touching. I love Newcastle and am writing my master's dissertation on the rise and fall of social housing in the area as someone who grew up on a council estate. you really did the area justice, as we get such a bad rep; thank you for your kind words!

Fantastic video, just randomly came up suggested and I’m glad I watched - Loved your well researched and complimentary presentation of this beautiful place that us Geordies are proud to call home - I swear most Southerners seem to think we all live in mud huts with no electricity and running water up here so it was very refreshing to see Newcastle being acknowledged and presented as the stunning and vibrant cultural powerhouse of the north it truly is - Just subscribed and looking forward to part 2 - P.S. I love Byker and never feel unsafe walking about any area of Newcastle unlike many other cities I’ve visited across the UK
Totally agree 100%, I would have said Benwell was far worse than Byker myself, they have an amazing Community there - having said that I lived in Benwell 30 years ago there is a lot of new developments there now. I happily walk the City Centre after midnight on a Saturday night on my own with no concerns.

I’ve never experienced any issues in Newcastle either.
Us folk in the north east do show respect to each other. Everyone’s equal up here. There are no better or no worse. We like to give everybody the same respect and concern

i was born and raised in newcastle so ive passed the city centre almost every day so nothing rlly stands but seeing how much you appreciated the architecture has helped me look around and appreciate how well things have been preserved. Great Video!

I'm from Newcastle, love it when Manchester United or Arsenal beat them lol!!! The Geordies are bad loosers and delusional at how good their team is, they have won no silverware since 1950s!!!
I could have shown you worse streets lol. You got the bus through walker which I think of as rougher than Wallsend or Byker. I live South Tyneside now. But I grew up on the north of the Tyne.

The bridge is going to be 100 years old in 2028 so it's getting a much needed face lift. The scaffolding is already started

I live in Wallsend. Theres some roman baths aswell behind where you were at the end. They weren’t unearthed until the pub that was built on top of them was demolished.

That's a VERY good day for shields road. I got the bus down it every day for years and there was frequently people sat drinking cans at 8am. Also I have to say that the litter situation is out of control in this city, I know it's probably everywhere but people just don't give a fk anymore. Wallsend lad here, enjoyed the watch thanks

Newcastle is in the dna of the local tribes. You can leave, but it never leaves you. Superb transport links and amazing coast to visit. And its still England up here. Fantastic history all around.
I'm born and bred in Byker. I been to many places in the UK, there a lot more worse places than Byker. I won't comment on these cause I never lived there. People only visit for a couple of hours. That can't give you a proper idea of the area and people. Thanks for a great video. Keep up the great work. Geordie Paul

i am from wallsend left 40 years ago when the shipyards closed moved to birmingham the people in byker and wallsend are good people they will help anyone in trouble i wish i was back there with proper genuine people you cannot beat the geordies . very good and fair video.

I moved to Gateshead about 10 years ago and it has a bad reputation but to be honest everyone is pretty sound and if you keep yourself to yourself you will have no issues or bother.
Grew up in Wallsend in the 70’s 80’s and 90’s -when I pass through it now it’s sad to see the decline.
I enjoyed this. I've been to Newcastle a few times, and it's a nice place. It's a bit rough in some parts, but it's the same everywhere.

It's my home. A beautiful, often overlooked city with warm & friendly people for the most part. As with everywhere else it's got some bad places but as you saw walking through the city centre & the Quayside it has it's beauty. Love being a Geordie ⚫⚪

Great video of my home town! I definitely think it's up there as one of the best cities in the UK after I have visited some right lows.
I live in Heaton, which is just on the other side of Shields Rd to Byker. I know Shields Rd very well. It’s not at all dangerous, but it is run down. You may have seen the big white fronted building with shutters on the front. When I was a kid in the 80s, that was Parishes Department Store. Further down the street where the British Heart Foundation Furniture shop is now was another Department store called Beavans. They used to be thriving and it was a street full of greengrocers, Butchers, Electrical Shops, Hardware shops, Banks. It’s in a sorry state to how it once was. As for the Byker Wall, I’ve never had or seen any bother when I’ve been through there, but I can’t comment from what it’s like as a resident. As for Wallsend, again it’s a bit run down in parts but again I’m often in Wallsend and it’s fine. You pronounce Segedunum ‘Seg eh do num’. You shouldn’t think of Hadrian’s Wall in terms of modern day England and Scotland. It’s course is entirely in England and whilst in the West it’s only a few miles from the border, at Newcastle and Wallsend, it’s 60 odd miles south of the border. In Roman times the area was inhabited by the Brigantes and the Votadini tribes who both lived on either side of the wall. Post Roman times it was the Kingdom of Bernicia which stretched from the Forth (beside Edinburgh) to down to the Tees. Bernicia then merged with Deira (comprising mainly of modern day Yorkshire) to form the Kingdom of Northumbria. Whilst the Picts were up in Northern Scotland. So the entire notion of Hadrians Wall being a border with Scotland or built to keep the Scots out is entirely incorrect.

Excellent video, nice to see someone be so complimentary on the city. Like all places, we have our issues but there is a sense of pride in where we live that seems to be lacking elsewhere. Byker/Wallsend/Walker are deprived places in the East End that brings common problems with it, but majority of the people are salt of the earth and hard working. Areas in the West End like Arthur’s Hill and Elswick are equally as deprived but there are signs of regeneration, the city as a whole has gone through several cycles of change and I feel like we’re currently in another one given the poor economic climate, times are hard but the city and it’s people always survive and thrive. Keep up the good work with the videos, cheers.

Sheilds road is a shit hole but definitely not the worst in the country. As other commentators have said theres worse places in the city than byker and we dont have any of the issues that citys down south have like the gangs and knife crime. But it is getting worse.
Going east to west, wallsend, walker, byker, benwell, elswick and scotswood were all heavy industy with ship building all along the river and the munitions factories in scotswood. When the factories closed there was high levels of deprivation that a lot of the communities never recovered from. Wallsend and walker werent bulldozed to the level the other areas were with a lot of the west end terraces replaced by blocks of flats and byker being replaced by the byker wall.
There was a plan to build a massive motorway behind the wall soone side just has a few windows dotted about as the wall was planned to shield the community from the noise and dirt from the motorway. But it was never built and as you pointed out the estate is like a maze. The problem came that if you knew the maze you were fine but if you didnt people could vanish so it was a hotbed for crime.
The city is pretty clean and tidy and as much as we have rough areas like byker you can walk around pretty much anywhere and not get bothered.
Oh and segedunum is pronounced seg-a-doon-um

Went to Newcastle college in the mid 90's then moved back down to the southwest (Bristol).
I really loved Newcastle. The Geordies are among my favourite folk in the UK. Always got on well with people up there.
Born and raised in Byker, and while there was always a few dickheads, we all knew each other, it was one big community. As you mentioned, the byker wall estate is like a maze, it was an amazing place to play hide and seek as kids 😁
I’ve noticed in the last few years an influx of people moving from down south up to Newcastle.
Not the southerners, they'll ruin the place! 🤣

You should head to north shields, tynemouth and whitley bay. Take the pedestrian tunnel to jarrow, go have a pint in Hebburn and get some Saxon and Roman history towards the coast. Head through the pubs of south shields then down past the old coastal kilns and like you said go grab a jar in the rock.

I live in Newcastle now having moved from Manchester and Toon is MUCH better place to live. I love the city. Having been to Byker 2-3 times I’ve never experienced any problems BUT I’ve not been in the estates tbf. Love the content. You got a new subscriber 😊

I got hit by a car on Shield's road, and while I was on my back seeing stars, a nutter came and stole my phone. I had broken ribs but somehow managed to chase him and get it back. But aye.. Byker is no joke

You could probs do a much longer vid on even the brief history of the wall, for e.g "Ratboy" a young prolific burgalur who would traverse through the heating system and always evade police, also there used to be a cinema at the bottom of shields Rd just up from where Morrisons is now, I seen one of the Rocky films there, was great

In worst high streets in the UK I think shields road was voted bottom once. It's bad, but it's not that bad, I've seen worse.
If you want shitholes Elswick is a good bad one. Near Fenham. I once witnessed what looked like someone robbing a house from the top floor throwing tvs out of the window n such, but maybe they were just moving out lol.

Wish I could get a £1 for every time I have patrolled that road. Great people there. My time plodding was 1980s to early 2000s. Some rocks but we have them living in London and Ponteland.
Theres sections of the Roman wall preserved all over newcastle. In an estate in Benwell (rough area) theres even a small church (alter) to a god no one had heard of before. Pieces of the wall on the side of the roads, inside estates its amazing if your into history.

ive lived in newcastle my whole life and yes there are rough areas but i tell you, you will struggle to find people in other cities who are so down to earth and friendly with each other. Geordies stick together through and through and I would change Newcastle for anytning. After all, theres rough patches in every city but theres no city like newcastle

Newcastle has many facets. Like anywhere you'll find bad with the good. I remember when Byker still had the remnants of terraced houses, and evidence of bombing from WWII.
With all the lovely architecture, I was wondering how badly hit Newcastle was during the war, it looks like it escaped the worst of it?
@@mickymouze1224 with Byker being close to the River Tyne it got bombed in '41 I believe. Bombers used the river as a guide because there was a munitions factory (Vickers) on the banks of the Tyne towards the West end of the city.
@@mickymouze1224 and yes it was bombed from July '40 to Dec '41 by the Luftwaffer but thankfully many historical buildings survived. Around 400 lost their lives sadly.

To be fair I’m from County Durham and as far as cities go Newcastle doesn’t seem bad. Some great buildings. And it seems quite safe. I still think it has nothing on Edinburgh. I went to Edinburgh recently and find that more stunning
But FairPlay to Newcastle as far as England goes it’s dope enough👍
Yeah Edinburgh is another special place, shame about all the Scottish though
