Bradford Pals, What Did They Die For? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

  • British history is complicated. Bradford is a result of Empire, Industrial Revolution, Post War Regeneration and Multi-Cultural Migration. I spent the weekend there speaking to locals and reflecting on the sacrifice of those who served the Bradford Pals Battalions of World War One.
The full poem from the quote in the video is from a WW1 veteran who describes the horrors of the war and how those who have not seen it should not be so hasty to send young men to such hellish conditions.
Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs,
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots,
    But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
    Of gas-shells dropping softly behind.
Gas! GAS! Quick, boys!-An ecstasy of fumbling
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time,
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And flound’ring like a man in fire or lime.-
Dim through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.
In all my dreams before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.
If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
    His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,-
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
    Pro patria mori.
    - Wilfred Owen

If say we went to war with Russia do you think because some people in the uk say we are not going to fight for the country it would make Russia think - ok then we won't attack? No, you can stay home, but it won't stop Russia bombing you. You wouldn't be fighting for the government you would be fighting for your life, your family and your home. That is precisely what those men and women fought for in ww2.

I am from Bradford. I grew up there & went to school there in the 1960s. Sadly, we were living in the first area that the new Pakistani migrants wanted for themselves. We were threatened & assaulted to sell our home to them. Even then, the police didn't want to know. My entire family saw the writing on the wall & emigrated to Australia, never to return.

I am from Bradford too born n bred to Pakistan migrant parents, the area surrounding the mosque site which was an unused rail station was a large council estate, my parents got housed there in the 70s and experienced regular racial abuse and attacks. The Pakistani community would reside together which any community would do when living in New lands, the council contributed to lack on integration by separating communities into separate catchment areas this in effect caused a lot of white flight, even now if asoans move into the more affluent areas watch your white neighbours sell up if they can and move to more predominantly white areas.

@@GoingGlobull no way! haha. I will also say, the problem with the rhetoric (in my opinion) of the churches, as seen in this video, is that it isn't one of strength. Although they say they are not political, the sermon being about DEI is exactly that. They should stick to, *unapologetically*, preaching Christianity, and thus the foundation of many British values/customs might be upheld in communities. What are British Values? A mixture of Christian and post-enlightenment thought, you need both, I think. Otherwise you might be at risk of being so open-minded your brain falls out lol. These are just my thoughts!!

My grandparents both born and raised in Bradford , my grandfather fought in
WW2 while my grandmother was doing 2 jobs while trying to raise 3 children , it was tough because in those dark days there was no help , no social security nothing , if you didn’t work you went without , my grandfather made it through the war and came home but he suffered from severe shell shock and died a year later , my grandmother brought up their 3 kids on her own which was hard but she did it , she died aged 76 from bowel cancer...this is what hundreds of thousands of people did in those days because they wanted to protect our country from invasion that would change the way we lived....
    They did it for Nothing..
We have been invaded and now the invaders want to change our country to suit their lifestyles , I believe the white indigenous population of the UK will never let that happen and will do whatever it takes to stop it...

It was too tempting to join the great war. Most had never been far out of Bradford and had hard and poorly paid jobs.
A trip to France with the British Expeditionary Force was very exciting - and anyway, it would all be over by Christmas.
To go there with your friends and people you knew was irresistible for many young men (lots were 14,15, or 16 - if you said you were 18 - you were 18)
2000 Bradford men joined the Bradford pals regiment and over 500 were killed within the first hour of battle and over a thousand of them in total.

A generation lost to the Battlefield fields of Europe. And then you have hundreds of thousands more who died in World War II. Look around you now and what do you see? Foreign men who occupy their land. Men who know nothing of the England they fought for. Men who are not of the Christian creed. It is not the England they aspire to. It is not the Sacrifice they bore.

It’s Orwellian doublespeak. Unity is strength, division is weakness.
The constant repetition of a nonsense phrase as if it makes sense is an example of ideologues trying to program the masses.
Diversity is many people all pulling in different directions - through having different priorities, customs, values, speaking in their own language and practicing their own religion, etc - that’s division.
For any smart Alec who tries to say that diversity and division are different things, I humbly beg to differ ^^

Claiming citizenship of any country is such a fluid issue now in view of the context of modern international politics, economic treaties etc. As a Pakistani born in Britain, I grew up around my own community who settled here purely to work and to provide for their families "back home". But 2nd generation of the kind born here, like myself, who consider Britain as our only home often face the dilemma knowing how fragile the notion of our britishness is, as we come to realise that we mostly stick to our community and hardly ever mix in with the white english folk for other than work purposes or the occasional time we invite people over to weddings or funerals, so despite being here for over half a century or so we still aren't considered part and parcel of the predominant way of life here (although we almost did feel to be part of it culturally during the 80's and 90's with shows like network east and goodness gracious me!), but I feel the damage of blairs labour and the current mass migration has caused a massive setback to people like us, as we are very cautious about the views held by the English and feel a massive eruption of sentiments will come out anytime soon, especially when there are strong dissenting (albeit very legitimate) voices out there calling against these changes. But it must be said that given that we have now travelled to a lot of places around the world, we acknowledge that the English are the most resourceful, tenacious, inventive, law abiding and a tolerant people in the world, and I've seen how the rest of the world looks upon them as a shining example of how this small island nation has changed the entire planets way of life in more positive ways. Coming to this realisation makes us grateful and proud for being born and bred here, and even though we do hold on to our strong Pakistani culture, language and traditions, we do have great respect and admiration of our English hosts. But the current situation makes me realise that for the likes of people like me, staying here any longer is becoming untenable. As Jawad said, the war is not his fight, as so many disinformation wars are being fought, I doubt any youth in this country or abroad is willing to risk their life or limb for a conflict that is the making of greedy and crooked politicians.

This can wax and wane depending on how much you are settled here, leading to deeper geographic (scouse/yorks/londoner...) or ethnic ties with Scot/English/Welsh ethnicities having deeper ties after hundreds of years, but even all these started somewhere. British history is bigger than any individual component, yet together it forms a continuity and deepness that is incredibly precious, and has contributed/reached so much of the world. There is so much to find solace/identity/fellowship in, and you can find everything (even its contradictions) in acts of bravery, slavery, abolition, charity, religious piety, secularism, trade unions, socialism, capitalism, science, literature, democracy, monarchy, the unwritten constitution, nature, industry, localism, pacifism, imperialism and humanist universalism, all of these are uniquely part of this nation's and these islands' story. Not a single one of us can encompasses all that, but that complexity/historical richness is much more fulfilling than any ideal that will ultimately be more shallow and fleeting. One of the things I love the most about Britain is its continuity and respect/sober approach to history and its adaptability. A frenchman is French based on the ideals of the revolution, a german is german because of romantic ideals of the volk. In a way all being subjects of the crown, while bonkers and even if you reject it, is more egalitarian/realistic than ideals which often become corrupted. I do think there is such a thing as British fellowship (based in reality not ideology), but we also recognize that that is something we need to nurture, you and your vids here are a representation of that, and it's something that can be very rare in the world.
Re the Bradford Pals fighting in WWI, WW1 has a complicated legacy, it was just as much a needless war based on the complex interests of european aristocracy, even at the time and afterwards people didn't understand what they were fighting for. Yet even from the senselessness, came some of the best statesmen, literature, and culture, and historians were able to talk about it honestly, unlike many other nations who would have slipped into justification/idealism/fascism. As much as we approach British past with nostalgia/rose-tinted glasses, it is still much more honest than what you see in other countries and their national mythmaking.
Also re whether pakistanis can be british, I'm not saying Bradford isn't divided, and a big part of that is components of pakistani insular backwards culture, and a kind of Islam popularized in the 00s/10s (saudi wahhabbism) that took over british asian identity, especially in Bradford/ghettoized areas etc. But regarding the memory of those in the war, it does irk me how little British people (not necessarily yourself) acknowledge the contribution of south asians, including muslims, to make the empire what it was. My great-grandad fought in WW1 in the British army and all his brothers died fighting for Britain. Then my grandad joined the British-Indian army and fought in WW2. Partition happened and he fled to pakistan (amidst a lot violence), he joined the RAF signals division and came to Britain in the early 60s. My mum's side of the family worked across the empire administration all the way up till partition. This isn't every family's story, especially if we're talking about the migration in the 90s onwards, but it's a significant contribution that is hardly acknowledged, either dismissed as woke nonsense, or the left ignore it because they can't stand the fact that many south asians were loyal parts of the empire. If more british (all races) people actually acknowledge commonwealth people's contribution to empire a bit more instead of totally ignoring it, that could go towards easing tensions and changing the narrative amongst the current muslims, and depoliticize talking about the empire
We do also need to recognize what went wrong, my dad grew up in the 70s in a white town, and his mum worked as a seamstress for John Lewis. Despite his family's contribution, he and his siblings faced insane levels of physical/racial violence, and my grandad refused to move to an area with more asians despite it being safer because he didn't want to be ghettoized. As my dad got older the racism my dad faced trying to get a job or going to a pub contributed to him suddenly going from a regular british guy to a hardcore muslim and retreating from the world, to the point he became a very closed off bitter person and distrustful of (mainly southern) white people. I'm not blaming all the current problems on racism, it's nothing like it was back then, and a lot of the modern issues have different causes, but a lot of the seeds of distrust began with that first generation. I just wanted to bring that up to say that, for good and for ill, it's fundamentally a British story through and through, and we should be able to recognize the different experiences of pakistanis in Britain, instead of seeing every pakistani as intrinsically alien.

Social media, a lack of early grounding probably doesn't help. Immigration of people who bring their own ethics will never help. I've always thought the architecture (or the decay thereof) is indicative of what this country has become. Where once we would build cathedrals knowing that generations of men working on the build will never see it's completion. We were more forward planning, so the ideas of family, values, and 'getting stuck in' were more prevalent. Even homes were build with strength and architectural beauty. It gave us a print of what it was to be British. Towns and streets were a perfect balance of unity but no so much that it looked soulless like many Soviet countries. It also wasn't to individual and chaotic to show lack of cohesion. Even our streetlights and postboxes were ornate. There was care and a yearning to show beauty. There was a sense of pride. You don't have to go back many years to remember it. The memories of your mum telling you off if you left the house scruffy or without a haircut, or without your shoes being polished, for example. It was being mortified if you hadn't cut the grass in your front garden for fear of what the neighbours may think. It wasn't about how you felt, it was about what others expected of you. Whether that is how you behave or conduct yourself. This is where politeness and civility came from, this is where safety in our communities came from, this is where holding public workers and representatives to account came from. We were an 'us', now we're an island of many 'me's.
Of course you would fight for your country. We would not have that spoiled by anyone that had alternative motives. We have now condensed that spirit down to when our national sports teams play. You see a window into that time with the passion of the fans.
Contrast all of this to today: you now have cheap architecture being crudely thrown together in the quickest time possible to satisfied a current demand. The architecture (if you can call it that) had 'efficiency', time, and a means to an end in mind. We brought in immigration to an insanely unmanageable level that did not allow or even make newcomers obliged to assimilate. Now, those same people that want to keep their gardens well kept and their streets clean and safe, are living next door to people that not only don't bother speaking your language, they dot want their kids speaking to yours, they'll tarmac their driveways with complete indifference to how it sticks out to neighbours. It is THEY they brought in the 'us and them' dynamic.
In large, this country has been and still remains unbelievably welcoming and hospitable to immigrants. Even to a fault, we still do it.
We all claw on and huddle around the architecture and communities of yesteryear. It's why they cost so much to love there. The beautiful buildings, the pleasant communities, the respect of our history and the key one (which we have failed so miserably at) is the preservation of our heritage.
This is not a new Britain. It is a decaying Britain, infected by those that don't promote unity, don't enforce the law, belittle those that do expect a certain adherence to our culture. People all over Europe and the West are experiencing the same to a different extent. This can't go on forever.
I think if you ask most Brits, we couldn't give a damn about your skin colour or where you are from, it is VALUES that we must keep sacred. It is speaking a common language and 'getting stuck in'. Add to the beauty, respect our past, preserve our values. That really is it.

Because England is part of Great Britain, everything English is technically also British, but not everything British is also English. You shouldn't, for example, refer to the Loch Ness Monster as an English cryptid. It (purportedly) lives in Scotland, so you can call it Scottish or British.

I like to second Eastern European are prolific fly tippers. The reason I know it’s them doing it is because they don’t drink in pubs because they don’t want to pay 5 quid for a pint. So they go to the off license and get their polish and zech beers. Drink in the parks and canal paths then throw their beer cans in the bushes and paths.

10:37 ''Russia can do what he wants (meanwhile elderly people are shot to death by Russian Soldiers, apartments and streets are being bombed to bits), J going Global: haha Love that mate'' both of them must be saying all that out of Ignorance, none of you really know how many Innocent lives are being murdered at the hands of Russian Forces, and I guarantee his against the same thing when It is happening to the people within Gaza, you can say ''not our war'' and In some ways both of these places are distant lands to you, but trust me It's literally just on the other side of Europe and If the same things that were happening in Ukraine were happening to England and your family/friends.
you would soon have something to say about it, It's okay to not want to go to war over unjust causes, but what Russia is actually doing is horrific, and they will not just stop at that one country, loads of people will suffer as they seek to destroy an entire nation/Identity/culture from the face of Europe, before they then move on to the next. we should be against people losing their lives at the hands of Aggressors, whether that's in Europe or Gaza.

This is a difficult and emotive subject, and I think you go about it well. And I think everyone in the UK needs to know how other people are feeling about immigration and integration.
Typically 'English' surnames that fell in 2 World Wars alongside their Indian, African and Asian bretheren who were colonial subjects of this Nation and other European Allies. Many many suffered and died from the Colonies, where we (GB) amongst others had previously invaded their countries and subjugated their peoples. The fact that you see the descendants of some of these peoples in our streets and as British Citizens is Karma as far as I can see it. Providing shelter and Asylum to the oppressed is a key part of British Culture. We've also invited masses of former colonials to come and do the jobs that British people don't want to do, and we continue to need immigration for this reason. There are white English people spread about in diasporas all over Europe (ask the Spanish about the Costa Coast) and Asia, and Aussies and New Zealanders are everywhere - no one seems to want to recall them home as a matter of principle, or for ruining or affecting other cultures. (Actually the Spanish are probably fed up of so called 'British Culture'). As long as people can be given and accept the opportunity to work, pay taxes, work within our established systems of government and law and order and educate their children to do the same, then I don't care what colour their skin is - they are welcome. There are too many white British who don't or won't.... When and if we put up memorials to name our conscripted dead for WW3, it'll have a greater range of surnames, but they'll still be on the Wall.
