I lived in Byker in 1999. I lived next to a drug dealer, he was very polite, and we would regularly have a moan about the pigeon crap and fleas living in the windows. One day I woke up to my car on bricks, and he said he knew the scally who had taken them and got them back for me. It was the worst part of my life. I was on the dole and working part time cleaning toilets in a factory. I remember Winter was the worst, climbing a hill in the pounding rain and wind going to a job I loathed cleaning other people's skid marks. I felt demoralized and hopeless. I lived on one plate of pasta and raisins each day and had to sell all my possessions for food. Then one day I snapped, something in my brain clicked and I realized that if I was determined enough, strong enough, I didn't need to live like this. I couldn't tolerate this for one more day. I had to get my sh** together. It was do or die! I applied to uni as a mature student, fought hard to get funding and got into a course that only took 6 people a year. I clung onto that opportunity like a drowning man clings to a raft. I felt like an imposter at the beginning, like I didn't deserve to be among successful people, it felt weird, but slowly my self-confidence grew and grew, and I felt great pride in working hard and doing well. I went on to publish a book and take a PhD. Moral of the story, its never too late to live your life, until you are dead, and then it is.

I've got to say I don't have much sympathy for the homeless in the UK. There is SO much opportunity and help available. I lived for 6 years in México, no such thing as benefits, you smell the homeless before you see them. Many die from dehydration. Most in the UK just spend all their money on drugs and don't really want the help (until they crash from the drugs and run out of money).
My Dad was born in Byker, he’s 81 now. He said it was a great place to live, it was the heart of the city. You could leave your front door unlocked, everyone knew their neighbour’s. Everyone helped each other out. Unfortunately not now, I suppose every city is like this. It upset him when I showed him this video. But mostly tears in his eyes when he heard the young lass talking. Our city has failed her, he said. Me personally I think the Government’s past and present have failed a lot of people Dad. Thank you for sharing this video.
What? Everyone in the hotels is a criminal? Really? Probably a small %. Same as what you see on our streets, a % are criminals. Stop being brainwashed by people who hate non-white skinned people
Heart breaking listening to that young woman. Hopefully she gets the help and support she needs and can one day have an enjoyable life, which is what we all want after all. This country needs a wake up call.
Hi the country needs a completely new government would probably be the best start and to look out for our own not these immigrants. That young lass and many more like her should be put to top of the list for housing intact in reality let us our own British people should have the hotel rooms whilst waiting for to be housed & put the immigrants into tents not giving the funding every day so that they can live a life 100% better than us the born and bred citizens of this once fantastic country. Well done Billy you are touching many hearts out there, let's just hope that you manage to touch the hearts of some of the people that's out there that can actually start the ball rolling so that our own British people that are homeless and need all the help that they all deserve eventually get it.a lot more than a wake u
Imagine going in a coma in 2002...and waking up today...Mind blown ...really respect the way you treat folks Billy...with respect and dignity....'walk a mile in my shoes' peace and wellbeing folks ☘☘
It's a complete disgrace. Makes you wonder if the government has adopted a laissez-faire policy. UK is run by bloated capitalists. That's probably why the government won't step in because they don't have any leverage, the markets are in charge.
It's actually quite simple, because we live in a debt based economy, the government has limited funds to allocate to social programs, without increasing borrowing. The next argument is, why do they keep bringing in all these foreigners... easy, so they can be debted up to keep the economy going. People aren't having 4-5 kid families anymore, so the economy needs more people from somewhere for this very reason.
Graffiti, when it's built up and overlaid with many colours, can, and i say can, sometimes start to look strangely beautiful. And well done for giving those women a voice, prayers for them.
That young girl breaks my heart, it’s so very sad. If you hadn’t had a good start in life, it leads to all sorts of problems. I really hope she gets the help she needs and deserves xxx
@JessicaJones2001-o7t Why focus on that? If she was uglier would she not be as worthy of a chance in life? She’s got bigger things to worry about than what she looks like
Hi Billy i loved reading your book and listening about your life. Your doing a great job highlighting the struggles of our homeless.. its so sad ..our government are so corrupt.
The young female doesn't appear to have benefitted from being in the care of Social Services; there needs to be more aftercare in place for young adults once they have left care. Fair play to BM , he was very respectful.
The social care system is appalling. Very little support is given and most kids and young adults in the system are just left to be groomed by criminal gangs or left to engage in drug abuse/alcoholism in unregulated, unregistered 'care homes' that become a hotbed of crime and anti-social behaviour.
social service is garbage I was about to be killed in an abusive home in August and they said I was just being paranoid I was seen as having no mental capacity because of lies, even the police sent me straight home Eventually I was transferred to a shelter under 'mental health' and I managed to stay in for a couple months until they found somewhere suitable. That shelter had the nicest people I have ever met and was the first time people actually loved me and listened. Everybody else treated me like an infant and I wasn't allowed to prove I wasn't. They look pretty stupid now But I got extremely lucky
Love the respect you have for everyone no mater who they are , good on you. The camera never lies , it’s the reporter behind the camera that does that , great to see true to life reporting. Not this false news we normally get.
Its sad for anyone living on the streets...to be honest tho Bill that young girl really upset me...as a mam with a daughter older than her..i just wanted to give her a hug...i really hope she finds somewhere safe to rest her head and her life gets better and she finds some self worth...great vid Bill...thanks.
God bless that young girl Billy 🙏 I live in Stockton not far from Newcastle and originally from Liverpool but honestly Billy there's so many broken people up here om lucky I got drug free in 2007 but moved away from the circle I was in to stay clean, I volunteer up here mate and just showing kindness like you do really makes a difference 🙏💯 Your a diamond💎 Billy keep doing your thing 👌 🇬🇧💯🙏
The majority of the northeast is a dumping ground. Sunderland is a sh#thole that just gets deeper and wider. Unfortunately, there are people begging, and it's a con with them. It makes people wary about helping
Apart from the very few who want to live on the streets, most homeless people need a lot of help and support, of which is sadly lacking. They should never be the neglected and forgotten, the need help and opportunities to start again a life off the streets. I hope those in this video get the help they need and move on to a better way of living and life. Big respect for highlighting these issue Billy.
Newcastle born and bred here great video Billy my heart went out to that poor lass Chloe hope she can get herself somewhere to live and get her life back on track
I am from Sunderland and fully sympathise with the people of Byker, we have the same problems here and the government are totally blind to the problems. It is just not cool to help ordinary people.
Good to see you in Newcastle billy 😊 it is rough there I remember I cut through on my bike and stuck my hand out to turn left and someone pinched my watch 😮😅
Love Watching your Video's Billy Lad, an Old Geordie here an Ex Walker Lad who has lived in Byker now for the last 40 odd years, and the change in Byker is unreal, was such a great place to Live back in the 80's n 90's Great Community, now that is none existent, now Full of Shit and so many immigrants, you can see where the whole of the UK is going, just look at those Immigrants kicking around that Football when you entered Newcastle City Centre not a care in the world living it up at the New Bridge Hotel, unbelievable to see whereas we have young Native British lasses living Rough on the Streets, scandalous to say the least, i've just about given up with this poxy Country, everything that was once the UK is now being eroded on a huge scale, but anyways stay safe Billy and thanks for showing how real the Streets are
Wow, kicking around a football, jesus christ! I was kicking around a football myself as a kid growing up in the late 80s, kicking a ball around anywhere and everywhere. Hardly a crime
Listen Brianc6272 this Country is still the best in the WORLD it's the shite that's in government that are trying to ruin it and then blame us , keep the faith Bri , love N light from LIVERPOOL ENGLAND 🏴⚔️🛡️⚔️🏴
@@mrrrrr5158 I’d rather my tax money went into funding proper programs to help care, rehabilitate and house young native lads and lasses failed by our system then a bunch of none natives coming over to contribute nout but leech. Wow Billy this video has certainly opened my eyes. I am a Geordie who moved away from Newcastle 23 years ago after my divorce and it was nothing like that omg it looks like the Bronx but like every City it has a run down area sadly these run down areas will expand because of asylum seekers and this shit so called government. As for the people living on the streets that also will escalate sadly. What is this country coming to? a cess pit sadly.
I like how you interact with the people on the street if people did more of that when doing this on UA-cam the more people would understand the situation you are doing a great job and I take my ass off to you. Keep it up. God bless you.

14 years of Tory cutbacks, any idea how much the Tories took out of the budget. The council didn’t introduce the bedroom tax or welfare cuts. Easy to point the finger
l am old now, but my heart goes out these young people. This is how neoliberal capitalism operates, the working class are only worth anything when they are employed, otherwise they can die, as long as they die quckly and quiety, twas ever thus. Well done again Billy.
What an absolute shame for the young lady, hopefully help comes along for her. I work in byker, around them exact houses and it's a shame it has the reputation it does because the people living there are lovely people. Great video 👍👏
@colindixon9916 He certainly is. I only found the channel out a couple of weeks ago. I've seen a lot of people do this kind of thing, but Billy does it right. He's treats people like human beings and doesn't go looking to get a reaction from people to make his content. 🩷
I was born in Byker and watched new Byker (what you see) being built. It was a different place then and great fun growing up. Yeah, a tough working class community but there was standards. Sadly so many good people are trapped living in Byker surrounded in crime & drug use but this, like many other UK cities is by design of the system. Power to the people
Billy I stayed at the motel one hotel the other day the girl on the video the 32yr old gave me directions to grainger street she stood up and pointed me in the right direction.
Give that girl in the red a hug..She needs a huge long hug..It breaks my heart listening to her..I really hope she gets the help she needs..if I could, And if she ever gets to read this, pls stay strong and lots of Love from Ireland..❤❤❤
I worked at Argos Byker between 2016/19 as a delivery driver covering the main city centre and surrounding areas. Byker Wall definitely isn't the roughest place. Deprived, yes. The people who live there are genuine and have a community spirit where they look out for eachother. Fun fact the vans that entered the wall never got robbed, other parts of Newcastle did but Elswick was the worst so at Argos they ended up turning off Postcodes as in they blocked the postcode from ordering. At the time it was a week until Christmas all vans were packed and the one that entered a certain Elswick postcode had a few PlayStations, TVs loads of toys and even some flat pack furniture. They took the lot. We always got told if anyone goes to steal anything from the van let it be. This was before we had panic alarms that would notify the police. Good times 😂
Lived in Newcastle from '98-2002.All over the place I lived tbh.Lived in Heaton, next door to Byker and it was sound as hell.Rough&ready, but the people are boss, funny, tough, sarky(like us!😁)and have a good outlook on life in general.Good shops there and the walk from Byker to town is cool as you walk across the very high bridge, farm below and the views are mega.👌I had 4 smashing yrs in Newcastle and all the areas;Heaton,Heaton Park,Sandyford,Gosforth,Leazes Park, etc. A great city, very similar vibes to Liverpool. And yeah,it does have the same good&bad,a lot of beautiful places too and shitloads to see and do.Folk just get on with it and make the best of it.Tough, fair, funny people. I love and miss the place a lot. Great video Billy, highlighting what progressive governments don't give a shit about.Communities&people's lives.
I take it your a Scouser well ya right Liverpool and Newcastle have deffo got similar vibes I would also say Glasgow as well, those 3 cities very similar vibes

I enjoy your walk around videos. No frills just a real look at a place. Byker has a good place to visit called the Victoria tunnel. It used to carry coal. Very interesting history 🙏
Billy carries himself well as a man familiar with violence his humility and kindness to those he meets is commendable. Good work Billy. The plight of the UK need’s exposing to kickstart revival of sense and morals.
I met this girl in Newcastle about 18 months ago. She was such a sweetheart and relayed the same story to me. I was with a group of friends. We had a whip round (she didn't want to take the money) and I gave her my number. Told her we'd take her in and give her the family she needed. Sadly, I never heard from her. Hope she get's well soon.
Im a plumber and worked for the guy that designed the Byker wall. Loads of good people live there, met many. Just be careful where you leave your van though lol. It used to be a load worse, stuff Ive seen would curl your toes. Oh this is nowhere near the worst part of Newcastle. Great vids, some very sad stories being told. Thank you.

Newcastle is a mirror image of once great british cities - Hull, Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow, the list goes on and on. It's heartbreaking to see what a toilet the uk has become.
Just found your channel, so raw, so sad yet such a good watch! I hate seeing people struggle especially when there not getting the help they clearly need! Iv been clean over a year and no the struggle, was never on the streets or hanging about, always private but I know the struggle and I would’ve ended up there! Good people get taken by addiction and we all need to remember these people are human and there a certain way because they’ve been mistreated by probably everyone in there life so they end up not caring about themselves and end up a mess, it’s so sad!! Thank you anyway for showing the true problems of country and people ❤
I've lived in Byker 52 years since my marriage. Its always been full of lovely people unfortunately now its getting like downtown Kampala and getting worse. By the way, the Raby was a cracking boozer probably the highest money taker in Newcastle for many years. Back then Shields Road was a drinkers paradise, lovely pubs great customers good crack.
Boozers are in the shitter generally at this point. It's a natural result of 1) living costs being too high, 2) pubs overcharging for crap drinks and 3) alcohol being easily available cheaply in supermarkets.
I lived in Byker 10 years and to this day was my favourite place to live. Walking across the byker bridge to work through the day. And walking distance from the nightlife also. Not as bad as people outside of the area say it is.
And it’s mad the red blue and green paint is the same all over the north for council properties. I used to live in a green block for nearly 9 years. It was absolutely fkin horrendous. I was the the only person out of about 15 people living in 6 flats that had a job. I have my own mortgage now and family. I am blessed.
Only subbed to you yesterday Billy but already watched a bunch of videos and you are fantastic. Keep on showing the truth as to what Britains become pal.
It's called the Byker Wall and is a listed building. It replaced rows of old terraced houses which were deemed the real slums at the time. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byker_Wall#:~:text=In%20January%202007%2C%20the%20Estate,building%20(grade%20two%20star).
Try elswick/pendower/west road/stanhope street on a night time.. well actually don’t! I love it through the day mind. Amazing food choice and a great mix of culture. My Nana said it used to be a clean and tidy place, but it’s a mess now.. beautiful beautiful buildings and houses though. Just not looked after and a lot of crime, dangerous people.I grew up in a ‘rough’ place called Scotswood, now living at the coast which is such a blessing and grew up seeing many people like in your video. I’m grateful to have been brought up to be able to mix with anyone from any background.. I’m blessed as my path many times could have lead to this kind of lifestyle, and it’s a shame so many peoples do, due to being uneducated, lack of support and love. Prayers and protection to anyone suffering. I walked through the Byker wall a few times and it always amazes me tbh.. it’s own community, could be thriving (SHOULD) be thriving.. so much greenery, could be used for a grow club, growing organic foods and connection, health and wellness event etc. The government is f***ed and don’t give a shit. ❤
Billy, you cant help everyone lad, but you doing what your doing , showing your viewers the cold hard truth.. just maybe people will be kinder to the people that are stuggling in life.. .. fingers crossed pal.. if thats the least that can happen hey... . love what you do... its real xxx
I'm glad you said that Billy that people need to take responsibility themselves. I work with the homeless and can confidently say 99% have been giving support and housing but they don't always engage and the blame is always put on to services. Don't get me wrong, services aren't perfect, there's no money, high caseloads, shit staff and that, but the persons got to accept the help and help themselves.
There was a young burglar called rat boy who used to hide in the ventilation shafts in the byker wall,he made headlines in the 90’s all for the wrong reasons ,shields rd got voted worst high street in the uk not so long ago it’s a different beast at night a lot of foreign gangs off lads about ,great podcast though maybe spice it up a bit next time do it at night might get a bit more action especially in the raby ,I’m a walker lad and it’s not like there’s any postcode wars going I’ve worked in Middlesbrough and that is on a whole different level billy keep up the good work 😊😊😊😊
Another great vid billy. I grew up in Byker. Used to be a great place with good people. Shame the way it has turned out now. Another uk place going down the pan
1974 I walked into the biggest working men's club in Sunderland, they were playing bingo and the caller shouted Wilson's den number ten and there was a loud cheer from the customers. Town full of optimism. Half a centaury later again after a Labour victory the town gets burned down.
Love Newcastle. Granted, I live in Bedlington but I'm from Kilmarnock, just south of Glasgow and been in your region for 10 years. Absolutely love it. A warm and welcoming region and for such a small city (spent a lot of time in Lemington and mates in Jarrow, Shields, etc etc) you guys make it feel so much bigger than it is. A lot safer region too not gonna lie. 🤣

Heartbreaking to see the young girl on the streets with no support.I have a 21 year old daughter and luckily she has seen what the effects of alcohol and drugs do to people.Easy to say but if I was in the woman's position and wanted to change I would go detox and get my arse to Denmark, perfect place for a new start, especially with family connectionsI detoxed off methadone at 24,51 now British living in Finland and love it here, can't ever see myself moving back
I would love a fresh start in Denmark, and I'm not a drug addict on the street!! I'm not sure what her relationship is with her family, but surely if she got herself clean, they would let her back into their lives. Can you imagine! Living on the cold streets when your whole family is living in a farm house in Denmark! Like WTF man.
Alreet Billy, I live in Wallsend, There's worse places in Newcastle than Byker, all depends on who you ask. Aye the homeless population is something else lyk, they lay it on thick and are very sensitive. no one should be on the streets in Newcastle, there is so much help available and options for them, if your begging on the streets in Newcastle its for one reason and one reason only... crack and cocaine. Love your work Billy and your story, keep it up mate.
Very true!. I think 99% of homeless people take some form of drug/ alcohol. Nobody to stop this from happening so it will always continue to be that way. Some homeless prefer being on the streets.
Hi Billy, I watched your interview about your story, it was almost like you where telling my own story up to the age of 15. Ive just had a thought,,, I would suggest you start a Podcast Called " OFF The Clock " talking to the Bizzies,, because we only ever get to see one half of the story. My reasoning being,, is that the more attention you can put on the Self serving People, or organisations, you may be able to put a spot light on the real causes of these terrible stories. Yes, i know, its a pipe dream, but dreams are powerful things. All the best Billy. From Al in Surrey, British Columbia, canada.

1st off thanks for the video billy 2nd did you see how tidy and clean the place is, not a spot of litter anywhere , theres even no graffitti except the odd bit on the outside. its great to see that they take big pride in where they live. really good to see. and places like this where the likes of myself and them live are often mis-represented big time. you go a place like this, more often than not you get treated how you treat other people. be right with those around you an they be right with you. we aint animals we all human!! just got halfway through and seen all the graffitti lol im commenting on the colourful flats in Byker not rest of it, but even so there not any litter about lol
That girl broke my heart. Keep up the good work Billy. More interviews with regular people if you can mate. I would love to see you on a more mainstream channel. Showing poverty is really important.

How sad is it that we have young British women on the streets while the government puts young illegal immigrant men in hotels.
Exactly! Shocking.
Absolutely shocking
I thought exactly the same.
cry more, get a job
That's a great point!.. These women need so much more help, and they are British?
How is it possible the UK lets his people on the streets and houses these bloody criminals in hotels. 😢
What? Everyone in the hotels is a criminal? Really? Probably a small %. Same as what you see on our streets, a % are criminals. Stop being brainwashed by people who hate non-white skinned people
They spend all the stolen money on controlling the taxed people, hahaha, pay for your own enslavement. Good one huh!
They put themselves in that position.
@Claire-Jane1990 What criminals? Most of these homeless people you see on the streets put themselves in that position by getting addicted to drugs.
The immigrant they don't take a drugs hard worker..

I'm totally with you brother, we need to look after each other I'm only one man but I try my best.

10/10 for the video
Breaks my heart seeing this young lady . Why can’t our government do something about the homeless? It infuriates me.
They’re all too quick to help illegal migrants though aren’t they?
Unfortunately you cant house everybody, to do that would require massive funding, and a socialist government.
It's a complete disgrace. Makes you wonder if the government has adopted a laissez-faire policy. UK is run by bloated capitalists. That's probably why the government won't step in because they don't have any leverage, the markets are in charge.
She has the wrong colour of skin.
Absolutely heartbreaking. Surely someone can help a young kid like that
@JessicaJones2001-o7t Why focus on that? If she was uglier would she not be as worthy of a chance in life? She’s got bigger things to worry about than what she looks like
God Bless her. 😢 she feels unworthy through no fault of her own. 😢
Fair play to BM , he was very respectful.
something like 80% of prisoners have been in social care..... it's a business
Never met a social worker who's in it for the right reasons. Lots of control freaks and psychopathy within that business.
@@jilljohnson9678 they get bonuses for abducting "clean" children ..... the younger the better 🤢
The social care system is appalling. Very little support is given and most kids and young adults in the system are just left to be groomed by criminal gangs or left to engage in drug abuse/alcoholism in unregulated, unregistered 'care homes' that become a hotbed of crime and anti-social behaviour.
social service is garbage
I was about to be killed in an abusive home in August and they said I was just being paranoid
I was seen as having no mental capacity because of lies, even the police sent me straight home
Eventually I was transferred to a shelter under 'mental health' and I managed to stay in for a couple months until they found somewhere suitable.
That shelter had the nicest people I have ever met and was the first time people actually loved me and listened. Everybody else treated me like an infant and I wasn't allowed to prove I wasn't. They look pretty stupid now
But I got extremely lucky
Love the respect you have for everyone no mater who they are , good on you. The camera never lies , it’s the reporter behind the camera that does that , great to see true to life reporting. Not this false news we normally get.
Its sad for anyone living on the streets...to be honest tho Bill that young girl really upset me...as a mam with a daughter older than her..i just wanted to give her a hug...i really hope she finds somewhere safe to rest her head and her life gets better and she finds some self worth...great vid Bill...thanks.

Your a diamond💎 Billy keep doing your thing 👌 🇬🇧💯🙏
Stockton and Middlesbrough are rough. Newcastle didn’t even compare to what is happening in the centre of Middlesbrough it’s a complete dumping ground
Doesn’t
It broke my heart seeing Chloe, I worked with chloe during her primary school years, she was a clever girl. I wish I could see her when I'm in town 💔
Poor young girl , very sad to see such a young woman on the streets.
House her then, if you cared enough you would take her in
Not likely all the immigrants get housed first. I work with Africans who some how get council houses very fast it baffles me. Country's a joke

How to Design a slum from day one …and they call themselves Architects!
Just read John Pilger on the deliberate creation of these bantustans in the 60s.
It's called the Byker Wall and is a listed building. It replaced rows of old terraced houses which were deemed the real slums at the time. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byker_Wall#:~:text=In%20January%202007%2C%20the%20Estate,building%20(grade%20two%20star).
Streets, bricks, mortar don't make an area a slum - people do.
Needs to be listed for demolition. Bring in the diggers and wrecking ball

Sometimes just giving somebody a few minutes and hearing them out can help.
