    What a great organization. I love how they operate the volunteer program! Always adding a teaching lesson to the day. Tiffany didn't hesitate to reach out to the other rescues on new ideas and questions.

    100% agree with "listen to your vets" I worked at a small animal vet for 2 years as a teen. I currently have a business relationship with both my local vet and more so with a vet 1hr away. My 23yr old horse recently suffered a traumatic injury to his eye. My local vet does not have indoor facilities for large animals so going to the vet 1hr away wasn't even a question. The vet that saw him was absolutely amazing. I had already set myself up for the worst (enuculation). They determined he hadn't ruptured the eye yet but darn close (only the last layer of cornea left). We started on the road to the specialist who was supposed to be able to graft and repair and restore his vision. 5min down the road my vet called me back. She had spoken with the specialist and the prognosis was not good. The specialist recommended removal. So we turned around and went back to my vet and had the eye removed. My horse at 23yr old is doing awesome he is not remotely phased by it. This whole situation was terrifying for me but the vets and other staff were incredible and my horse took it all in stride. Good vets are worth their weight in gold.

    Terrific podcast with Gentle Spirit Horses and the challenges of rescuing horses, recognizing the potential life-span (?)/quality of life of a horse, whether to euthanize, blind horses, a children's horse program, and the extraordinary challenges of Dakota winters! Burrr. Arthritis in horses in winter? Due to lack of movement? Here in New England it has been very cold lately, in the teens-low 20s but walking everyday is a necessity and non-negotiable for 1) joy, 2) fresh air, 3) sunlight, and 4) movement...so I can understand that horses would feel stifled physically and might stiffen up.
    Looking forward to more with Gentle Spirit Horses. Great,engaging chat.

      @@Love-at-the-Farm-55: Makes sense. I get stiff if I do not move a good bit in the morning and until early afternoon: been like this for decades. People think it is getting older; no, it is lack of movement.

    I came from Montana and it is more like South Dakota. I agree that the cattle industry has a lot of money and impact in both industries. You two just solved dilemmas in this industry. Keep talking and reaching out. Put your feet in and talk thru the doors. People will listen. People are listening. I feel like we will dig, shovel and claw our way but I feel like it’s on the horizon. And don’t forget to use the veterinary office as an information highway. They can help. A sort of newsletter to the horse owner. We are gonna get this.

    There are very few if any horses in America that have never been given a medication or product that states “not for use in animals for human consumption.” This is as basic as first aid creams and feed supplements down to actual medications and chemicals. My horses are given a product like this at least once a month and I just have basic backyard trail/ pet horses. Show/ race horses are even more heavily exposed. I’d love to see research done on the consequences in humans of consuming American horses.

    Sounds like a great education program. Maybe there's training for blind horses or lessons in working with blind horses. Do boy scouts and girl scouts have horse badges they can earn in conjunction with Horse Plus...or general animal badges where they can care for cats & dogs?

    Tawnee, that idea of working with law enforcement to pick up the horses that they confiscate from abuse or neglect situations, is a GREAT IDEA. Sort of a hard spot to be in, when there is a court case preventing any soliciting for funds to take care of them. It is never a simple straight-forward issue it seems.

    • @GentleSpiritHorses
      @GentleSpiritHorses 6 місяців тому +3

      In our state, at least, we haven't had any issues fundraising for horses that are seized, but we are expected to account for every penny raised on our invoices to the county. Our policy is to waive any costs of care if we are awarded the horses at the end of the case, and if the horses are returned the owner usually has to pay for their cost of care. We have been awarded restitution if the court feels the owner can pay it. Being there for the horses means that we want to make it easy for the counties to enforce the laws, and not bankrupt them, but typically there's nothing stopping an organization from fundraising. Some states/courts may not allow you to post photos of the horses while a case is ongoing, but you can typically let people know you have seizure horses that need care.

    There is a processor that buy's over 450 US Tons of horse meat a year from Canada.
    Canada received nearly 4k documented slaughter bound horse's from USA.
    The horses that left Canada headed to Mexico is far more.
    They rarely make it past California or Arizona being dumped as they go.
    Usa citizens need to contact their Congress and Senate representatives to vote yes on the three Bill's.
    Canadians need to go after their conservative party MP and tell them to vote yes for the Bill to stop live exports.
    Once that bill is in place, it can be revised to include ground border crossing.
    All conservative members voted No on the last pass but Liberals didn't need to push through that day.
    Conservative party will cause failure without voter's telling them to vote yes.

    Horses can end up in dog food, if they have a heavy load of drugs in them, they can make them sick or die.

    • @GentleSpiritHorses
      @GentleSpiritHorses 6 місяців тому +4

      Technically they can only legally end up in dog food in the US if slaughtered at a federally inspected and licensed facility - which we don't have in the US. Horse meat in dog food hasn't been done since the 1970s for the same reason that they shouldn't be in the food supply - most are given drugs throughout their lives that make them toxic as a food supply. A few years ago some did end up in dog food through renderers who for whatever reason had horse meat mix in, and did cause some deaths, which was the main reason renderers stopped accepting horses - first they wouldn't accept them if euthanized via drugs; now they simply don't accept any at all, even if euthanized via gun shot.
