- The team was super busy this week at the shelter and we captured it all for you! In this episode, adorable puppies get transferred to find their forever homes, Kory and Faye go on a welfare mission after getting reports of neglected horses, some amazing volunteers help out around the shelter, and Dr. Lydia and Dr. Gina make an interesting discovery while checking Fiesta. I love Troy..hard working..dry sense of humour..and he knows what a girl wants for valentines day..not overpriced half dead flowers or a box of chocolates..but a gorgeous dawg like Ralph 👍..perfect.. leaving 3 sutures in Fiesta was bad practice on her previous vet.
That's where her infection spikes came from !!.. and Godiva ans Sissy adopted too..oh l loved Prince Charming..the kitty with those blue eyes and wonder tri colours..very unusual colours with those almost turquoise eyes..what a lil stunner..l hope you can get those emaciated horses Kory saw

15 years ago my hubby surprised me with a tiny baby parrot called a parrotlet, they are the size of a finch. He passed from old age last year at 14 years old.

Totally agree plus just having a dog makes your home less of a target for thieves etc so it makes her safer. It's a perfect gift.
You got THAT right! My ex would give me things HE wanted with the excuse of us having more time together as he would teach me how to use them! Yeah right, THAT part of my "gift" never happened.

My boyfriend in high school gave me a kitten one year and a husky the next. My mother said: "Why can't he give you candy and flowers like a normal boy!" But that guy GOT me!

Hi folks, when is "Horse Plus Vets" coming back? Now that you have both Dr. Lydia and Dr. Gina on staff full-time, obviously there are lots of vet procedures being done. It's understandable that you have to blur out some of the more non-family-friendly procedures, but many of us grown-ups and older teens enjoy learning so much from being able to view the full procedures.
I would like that!

Black Beauty now looks absolutely stunning. Again, as he got even more beautiful you clearly see the good care and love for animals at Horse Plus. I really hope he gets a loving forever home where he can have the happy life he so deserves.
I think he is a Friesan corss. Look at those ears.

@dianasherrill6154 they did a DNA test on him. He's lipizanner, akhal-teke, and another middle eastern breed that's small but tends to be black or bay. Lipizanners start black but turn white as they age. Also probably where he gets the neck arch and mane. And I think the metallic traits of the akhal-teke is what makes makes the blue shimmers in his coat.

Oct 2022 we found 2 dogs at the city shelter that needed to be adopted together. A 2 yr old male & a 3yr old female, both anxious & penned together. The shelter did the spay & neuter, applied a tattoo on each, as well as micro chipped & initial shots. They are small, female was 20 lbs & had slightly enlarged nipples, the male was 25 lbs, needed total body clip, as coat was thick & matted. My guess is they were breeding mill dogs & not handled much. Now a year later, they are still a challenge on being social with strangers, but are fine with the 2 of us, although for safety, we are medicating prior to vet visits, as they are not behaving well, being very protective of us. I can do the grooming without there being drama. The last vet visit found both tested positive for Lyme disease immunity, which we treated with appropriate med. We do have a 14 acre farm & they were both found with ticks after walks, so them testing positive did not surprise me. With the treatment they received we should be fine. Both were negative for heart worm & will be treated monthly, year around for three different types of worms. Prior to getting these two dogs, we had been adopting senior or disabled dogs. When these dogs passed wanted to continue to adopt and found these two. We feel very blessed to be able to bring them to our farm and hope that over time they will become more social & less intimidated meeting new people. We know we have our work cut out for us, but are really enjoying them and they seem to be enjoying being here with us. Please adopt if you are thinking of getting a new pet. So many dogs are euthanized because people want “pure breeds”, then start breeding them, just adding to the problems. Is it really worth the money? JMHO
No. It's not worth it. I get so mad when I see people that come to buy Xmas trees and don't want to pay the price yet they have a Cane Corso female pup and small children. And are talking about breeding her. It drives me insane. There is not a big call for these animals except by those that just want to look special. And the animals suffer. Same with pits. Over bred for no reason except wanting to look tough in most cases.
@@barbrice721 My oldest brother and his wife lost their dog & she insisted on getting a $2500 toy mix breed puppy, that has been the worse decision ever made. She’s a biter, shredder, absolute hazard, right from the start. I swear the breeder saw my sister in law coming a mile away & sold the worse one out of the litter. From her behavior, although she is less than 4 pounds, that’s full grown, she’s worse than the huge dogs people seem drawn to! When I told her we spent $200 for both dogs at the shelter and all that that included, she could not believe it. (Spay/neuter, shots, microchips, nails trimmed, male body clipped) . Yes, we do have to socialize them, it’s just my husband & me, no kids, so they are over protective. The vet did give me meds to calm them down for visits & that did help. I do the grooming, tried to take to a groomer & that didn’t go well. I have to body clip my pony 2 times per year due to Cushing’s disease, so I’m not intimidated by the dog. When it’s just me I don’t have to give anything, but I’m glad I’ve got backup if needed. Fortunately it is only the male that grows the heavy coat, the female has a very fine, wispy coat, we named her Phyllis Dillar , that who she reminds us of. I’m glad the breeder took these two to the shelter, neither would be good blood lines to continue, but I’m pretty certain Phyllis had at least 1 litter, her teats were still elongated with slight swelling around them. At the shelter they were in a run together & had to be adopted together, so there was definitely something up. If separated they get anxious, unless they do it on their own. Now my sister in law has it in her head that she should hold off on spaying her dog. Supposed to be dangerous & unhealthy. Hard telling where she heard that from. I am old school, spay or neuter. Don’t risk an unwanted pregnancy, especially in such a small dog, it could kill her. Thank for letting me vent. God bless!

I always look forward to Thursdays episodes. So kuch good stuff happening at HP. Love to watch the vet procedures and the explanations from Dr. Lydia and Dr. Gina, they seem to work so well together. I will miss seeing black beauty leave, he's so pretty to look at. Im happy for all the animals that find new homes, hopefully forever homes. Dr Lydia, I personally wouldn’t have you (attached quickly) any other way. As far as I’m concerned you are our Mary Poppins….perfect in every way!! We are so lucky to have you!!!!!! There a few others at HP too. So you can now answer to Mary and feel confident that you are answering to the correct name !!!

I am always amazed at the depth of knowledge and talent that a good veterinarian must have. A different set of data for each type of animal. Plus a love for all creatures.

One thing I was really shocked at was that none of the Horse Plus family adopted Black Beauty. Peace.

Black Beauty is an Akhal-Teke! Very rare in the US. They are from the Mid East - but then you probably know this already. They can do dressage or anything the Hot Bloods can.

Troy is such an intragal part of HPH. I love to watch him with the horses. And he’s mechanically inclined. Keep him around as long as you can.
Also, I believe you go to the “Hopi” Nation in Arizona to do veterinary work but I’ve been hearing it pronounced “happy” and “hoppy” on your videos. The Hopi People pronounce it with a long “o” and the “e” sound on the end. Like Hope(y). (just in case you go again). From Diane in Arizona. Love all you guys.

I feel so sorry for Fiesta having those stitches that were the wrong type put in and having them create more misery down the line in her life as this very same thing happened to me and I had to be lanced with a scalpel with no freezing and flipped over so the poison would not enter my body or I could have died before making it to a hospital to have them removed there.
Love what you do and donate monthly, but was concerned that the young kittens you neutered, spayed were turned loose outside and looked soo scared and 1 ran off into the woods! Can you not have a half way place outside shelter so a kinder adjustment?? Like you do the puppies? Really bothersome. Janice

Thats what these neglected horses need and thank god for the vets that volunteer their time the more the merrier they also need more scientists to dicover all kinds of problems horses have, such shivers, a pill to take for colic and all kinds of things eye transplants, hearing aids, oxygen masks, all kinds of stuff etc. When people have knee problem where bone on bone they give a foam of the rooster combe its a foam that raises the bone off the bone i bet they could use that on horses also its worth a try. The horse blanket thing really depends on the coat your horse has and if you shave it. Taking it of at 4.5 degrees Celsius (40F for the weird ones out their ;-) ) can be low, but 15 C is high enough for most shaved horses
Having a blanket on does conserve energie when it's colder, but that's mostly usefull when you should be feeding your horses more

I am glad about, and solidly behind, your efforts lobbying in DC. The current laws, with regards to our equine population at risk, are inadequate and the results are shameful. Do you follow the 20% rule for adopters? Surely hope so.
I would love to get a reply from Horse Plus about this. It seems to be an ongoing concern. I know not every adopter will be riding the horse they’re adopting, but in some cases they obviously are, and seem to exceed that weight percentage- (which is actually double that recommended in the UK, so less would be better, especially for older horses or those whose composition demands it)
I think caring adopters would be alarmed to learn that they are causing suffering simply by riding their chosen horse, and all would be far better off if directed to horses more suitable to their weight. I say this as an overweight individual all too aware that I simply should not (and therefore will not) ride horses not suited to bear my weight. It’s the only humane thing to do….
What is the 20% rule for adopters?

It’s a rule regarding the weight of a rider compared to the weight of a horse:
“As a general guideline in the UK, a rider should weigh no more than 10% of the horse's bodyweight, but in the US, this limit is doubled to 20% of the horse's weight. This means for a 500kg horse, the range for the maximum rider weight is large - 50kg in the UK (just less than 8st) and 100kg in the US (15st 10lb).”
20% is actually rather high still… if not aiming for 10% as in the UK, 15% would be a better compromise… for the sake of the horses - especially older horses or those of any age whose composition or condition is not suited to bearing heavier weight on their backs.
Carrying more weight than they should can cause pain and damage their backs…
@@Taneehl the 20% study is outdated and actually not well studied, the experiment was 'tainted' meaning there were too many changing variables. They used 4 year old horses who had only been under saddle for 2 weeks and then spent 2 weeks riding those horses for 2 hours every day.
While I agree that Godiva was not in the right body condition for that girl to be riding her, the 20% rule needs to be re-tested using proper scientific method
I used to work at a vet clinic. Ive shaved more total mat dogs n cats than i can even count. Very sad......

If you have a concern, how about some sensitivity? Having a thought and mentioning it on a phone call w/HP is one thing, posting such a though publicly is not cool... If they had a concern, it would have been addressed privately on the adoption site visit. As a big booties woman, I can assure you that my biggét ass-pect (intentional misspelling) is my heart... I've lost 80+. pounds and will lose at least another 20 before I mount up... But don't assume that larger people are either cruel or ignorant. Maybe you just don't have all the info. G-d bless these adopters. May they all be blessed for making positive animal forward life chóces! Love and peace...

@@cfowler9565 fellow "big bootied' woman here (Just say fat lol). YES that girl was too big for Godiva, at least in Godiva's current body condition. she needs more weight and muscle before she can carry a heavy rider.
What kind of fillowup is done with the adoptions ?
The live ended while I was searching for this crying dog. I live in a small 11 suite building and no one has a dog. It's cold outside! I wanted to check to make sure it wasn't stuck in the doorway, or hurt & lying in the hall somewhere. Didn't knock on anyone's doors, but all seems fine. I think that the gal across the hallway form me is back dog-sitting her relatives dog again.
