  • Jason and Tawnee open up about their private life in this intimate sit down interview. Why did they leave California? What kind of cars do they drive? Who built their house? What trespassers were snooping on a law enforcement case? The answers go on and on, and you will get to know the founders of Horse Plus Humane Society a whole lot better on a personal level after watching this video!
    January 2023 Euthanasia Reports: bit.ly/3IgOrzD
    Blog Archive: www.horseplushumanesociety.or...
First Euthanasia Clinic News Story: www.horseplushumanesociety.or...
There have been some malicious rumors being posted online and we would like to share with you, our fans, the facts so you can help educate others who may have legitimate doubts from all the cyberbullying that has been occurring recently. Please understand that we cannot answer each rumor individually to each person that asks. With well over a million followers around the world, we cannot respond to each negative comment; however, with this information, you can be an ambassador for the hard work we do to save lives. Our co-founders Jason and Tawnee made a video to address some of these allegations and answer questions that have been asked.
A small number of our workers left in January and early February, either by getting fired with cause, abandoning their job, or turning in their two-week notice. All of the employees that left were in a special friendship clique and when one of them turned in their two-week notice in response to being notified (s)he was under investigation for harassment and bullying, it was only a matter of time until the rest quit or unfortunately had to be fired. Our lawyer has recommended that we do not release any further details on the employees that are no longer here, but please understand that a huge majority of our employees are still here every day taking care of the animals and sharing their stories. It requires a significant and lengthy pattern of misbehavior and refusing to obey company policies for any employee to be fired, and unfortunately, that did have to occur.
Some of those employees who are no longer here have spread the rumor that our new vet came in and euthanized 60 healthy horses, some of which were young and healthy, which is not true. Prior to having a full-time veterinarian on our staff, we had two veterinarians who would come to our shelter part-time as they were able. They were both full-time employees at their respective jobs and did the absolute best they could to make time for the horses at our shelter. Because of their limited time availability, there were a number of horses who had underlying medical problems they did not have time to fully diagnose during their visits. With the knowledge we had a full-time veterinarian starting work in January, their professional opinion was that the horses were medically stable and it would not be detrimental to their well-being to wait until Dr. Nancy started work full-time and could perform thorough and complete evaluations on each horse, including extensive x-rays, ultrasound, and dental examinations. We have released the January Euthanasia Reports to clear up any rumors of our new vet coming in and euthanizing healthy horses. You can see the reports at this link: bit.ly/3IgOrzD
As euthanasia reports in an attractive format take time and resources away from the current animals in our care, we will not be releasing euthanasia reports going forward, upon the request of our supporters. You can watch our weekly episodes on our UA-cam channel to see the outcomes of the horses at our shelter: / horsehumane
One unfounded rumor that has persisted is that Horse Plus was kicked out of California. Shortly before we left California, Tawnee and Jason were in the California Senate Chambers receiving an award for the good work of Horse Plus Humane Society in the State of California.
Please watch this video addressing the rumors: • Addressing the Rumors We hope this clears up any confusion about rumors that were spread about our organization.

Just for me personally, I found it reassuring and even comforting to see how HPHS handles the last act of kindness, in a way that prevents the horses from experiencing any anxiety or pain, and surrounding them with love and caring in the last moments of their earthly lives. You've built up your family's finances from your own hard work, and you absolutely have the right to family vacations and hobbies. I've read some of the bullying posts and it's very obvious that the people are not savvy about business, how non-profits work, and they don't seem to get it that more senior and experienced employees get paid more than entry level people. I have 3 horses, all rescues, all geriatric. One is a pony who's 40 if he's a day, I have an OTTB who will be 30 in April and a rescue from a cruelty case who is 20. There are NO rescues in my area that have any room for more horses. There are waiting lists. So I've made the decision that if I were ever to find myself in a financial situation where I could no longer care for my horses, I would put the pony and the OTTB down before I would let them end up at an auction. The 20 year old can be returned to the no kill shelter I found her at.
I have seen pictures of horses being slaughtered, I have briefly watched a video of slaughter and I can tell you it scars you for life.
I applaud the two of you for doing what needs to be done when an owner fails their pet. And for having the tenacity and wherewithal to grow your rescue so that you are the standard for all others. I wish you continued success

I’ve said it before and I’ll keep saying it-it’s infuriating that you have to go to auction and buy 10 horses that you have to put down that very night. It’s infuriating that you have to use donations to do what any responsible owner would have done themselves. It’s infuriating that this kind of dumping is legal and seems to have some social license to operate. And I’m damn glad that you are there to stand between these poor creatures and the horrible deaths they are facing.

I commend you for making those hard decisions. I had a rescue here in FL that abandoned a horse with navicular on me. They didn't do any vet checks to discover why this horse NEEDED shoes... 2 months after I adopted him, and thousands of dollars later we discovered severe bode degradation on the navicular bone... I didn't have the right to euthanize originally but when I contacted them they said we can't take him back he'd be a sanctuary horse he's too expensive to keep as a sanctuary horse, he's your full and clear do what you want... I didn't know what to do and didn't want to give up on him. I should have it would have been kinder to him and myself. Had Trey 7 yrs and his issues just got worse and more issues popped up to the point that he had several issues that just made his quality of life so awful, no matter if you solved one issue he had many more that were not curable... I see so many "Trey's" at those auctions people that pulled crap like that rescue did and shirked the duty they had to the horses. If they are so badly off that no one that knows the horse well would ever entertain taking the horse off your hands for free. It's time to euthanize. I see so many that, should have been euthanized so many years before they came to you. It's heartbreaking that their last year's were so awful and painful. Im,so glad you have created a rescue that will take any, animal in any condition, even if it's to euthanize. I spent 1200 to have my gelding put down and disposed of. I would have preferred to bury but he was house in an equine community with several wells drilled so it was not an option. You are doing what the original owners should have done years ago... thank you and I for one would do what you are doing if I could. There's so many of them out there...

Thank you for this video, even if it should not be necessary that people who have been working for 20 years have to explain themselves for the stuff they own. I have read a couple of the posts on the hater's sites, and when trying to get some real proof of the accusations they made it went to blatant non-understanding what I meant because the pictures "showed it all" (no, they did not show any proof of anything besides that there were those pictures) to calling names and being completely rude on me. This process progressed very fast.
If I see two parties where the one trying to explain their point of view quite matter-of-factly without calling the other names and without trying to demeaning the other party, whereas the other party does all those things PLUS also very quickly does the same on any other completely unknown person, it's almost superfluous trying to find out more about the accusations. But I really appreciate you are trying to answer their "alternative facts", which clearly confirms my gut feeling.
Never trust people who claim to care for animals yet do not treat their fellow human beings with respect.
All the best to you guys from Sweden

Excellent, heartfelt transparency in this video. Thank you for being honest and sharing detailed information, as you could, legally, to viewers. Bullies are wimps, plainly and simply with a sense of matrydom and self-entitlement beyond comprehension. Thank you for rescuing horses who may have been bullied and certainly neglected.
Rentals are not as easy and cash-flow positive as tenants and others think. I owned a rental in TN and it was hell, mostly because the market crashed in 2007, a few months after I bought it. The neighborhood went back to trash, tenants were challenging, and the property was vandalized a number of times. The nightmare ended when it sold in 2013 with a great financial loss.
Focusing on all that you do, I do not know how you do it. I just started volunteering at a local cat rescue. One person runs it: the issues are numerous. I will take in cats as pets/companions but could never handle a rescue, even for cats.

So sad that you have to explain yourselves. Those who criticize you do no one a service, and only slow you down. You and Jason are outstanding individuals. People who are not willing to help should just GET OUTTA THE WAY! Having worked and volunteered for humane societies all my life, I well know the pain of having to euthanize, but it is much better than the alternative - animal suffering. You will ALWAYS have my support.

Bingo……I must say, when I found out you have a crematorium I was sooooooo impressed. I appreciate your mind set. Thank you Tawnee, thank you Jason. This is perfect, you have to deal with a lot!!

Very informative and educational. You have answered a lot of questions I always had about how Horse Plus works. Growing up, my sister had a poster in her room that said "The more I know people, the more I love animals". When I hear about the awful rumours you're dealing with, I can't help but agree with that.

I'm so glad you addressed this. Your explanation sounds reasonable, and I really hate when the bullies win. I have also asked myself what rescues do with the bodies of euthanized horses, and I am so glad to know that they are cremated. It is comforting actually.

Kudos to you both for clearing the air AND I’m sorry you guys have to try to explain yourselves and the organization. Huge props to the vets who have to make the determination that some horses cannot be ‘fixed’ or ‘rehabbed’ and the last act of kindness is just that - a necessary and compassionate end to suffering.
I completely understand Jason’s comment about the smoke and the crematorium - thank goodness the organization has that resource and it’s working again!
You deserve to be paid!! Good for you on your money management!!
You’re entitled to enjoy hobbies!! Drive whatever car(s) you want to - it’s ok to have a life. As long as your organization passes the mandatory audits - I have no problem allowing you to pursue your own passions and happiness.
It sucks that you have to defend yourselves.
Keep doing what you do best.
