From Monk Season 2 Episode 1 'Mr. Monk Goes Back To School' - Monk takes a job as a substitute high school teacher in order to determine whether a teacher's fall from a clock tower was suicide or murder.
Monk (2002 - 2009): Former cop Adrian Monk was a star officer till he develops an obsessive-compulsive disorder. Now he struggles with simple everyday tasks but continues to investigate cases.

He killed the english teacher because they were having an affair, and she wanted him to tell his wife.

Also, Sharona found out that the English teacher was pregnant when she was killed. In the beginning of the episode, she wanted the murderer to choose between her and his wife, but he was still unwilling to do so. The murderer probably knew that the English teacher would eventually tell the wife about everything, including the baby.

He knew that the side of the quad facing the clock was going to empty at that time (except of course, the janitor).
