I completely agree with Francome on the Grand National. He summed it up perfectly. The original coursebuilder's aim was to eliminate every horse, now we do everything to keep every horse running. Statistically, that will lead to more accidents.

...I can see bookies offering money back if your horse falls in the GN.....

Richard B i think you are right I was going through some old footage of the Grand Nationals & most of fallers at the first
fence was they were going to fast.By making the fences easier the horses will go faster & maybe leading to just as many
      accidents & maybe more deaths.

Absolute gem of interview. Jf is spot on . National is specialist. Red rum would be below average anywhere else in the main. Bowing to animal rights again. Btw .jf a huge miss on channel 4.

Agree with Francome 100%, the National isnt for Brighton beach donkeys its for Racehorses. By the way, Francome's win on Sea Pigeon in the champion hurdle was a masterpiece.

@@terencetrentwatford.632 Try not to be stupid. Sea Pigeon needed holding up until the very last second.
Only John Francome was ice cool enough to wait until half way up the hill before unleashing Pigeon's speed.
That is what Jonjo had wanted to do in 1980, but Pigeon landed in front and running. Jonjo had no choice other than to let the old horse run for the line.

Some brilliant points from Francome - he'll go nowhere in racing talking sense.

There is a difference between a steeplechase and a flat race is obstacles.

You were a great jockey. But too many horses have died at Aintree.
