As a Geordie, I loved Big Mac. He was so courageous and never flinched when it came to asking the difficult questions to those who dared to undermine his beloved sport. My overwhelming memory was the way he would take criticism. He would laugh and nod in agreement when confronted with his own failings. All he wanted was for others to be as honest and true to theirselves as he was.
What a man! Him on telly, introduced me to the delights of horse betting. My favourite horse was Sir Harry Lewis. RIP Big Mac. Channel 4 Racing was the bomb: Derek Thompson, John Francome, Lord Oaksey, Big Mac and Brough Scott.

For quite a while Big Mac was the biggest personality in racing. He was unique and gave betting the prominence it deserves in the coverage of racing, which broadcasters have copied ever since.......and he was very very funny.
@@joegreen2750 Channel 4 Racing went to pot, for sure. But ITV Racing is brilliant. Big Mac's protégé, Matt Chapman, continues to carry his torch. However, you must acknowledge, by the end, Mac was a bit barking.
I remember asking him for an autograph and he was a really kind and polite. A lot of what you saw of him on tv was an act for tv. He was actually the man who made racing popular. Before him the presenters were stuffy upper class types. He gave us entertainment.
Plese bring back the Channel 4 racing and morning line of old...John mcC,Tommo,the noble lord,john F,the timeform man Jim McGrath and that great caller Graham Goode.
And another thing - John McCririck told the audience when a hot pot drifting fav. was going to lose! I remember his remark re a big drifter ''O My God'' He was sacrificed for being blunt and forthright.
Awe, them Cigars done the job.. RIP to a brilliant Personality.. End on C4 = 👎. Easy target aswell for his 'controversies' & viewpointS etc, but a heart of gold that knew his stuff regarding the 'GG's' 🏇🏇 especially. (Bless..)
Awful man. I used to like watching him on TV, but took my son to the races & we saw him in his real charm. He was laughing & joking with everyone until the cameras stopped - then immediately shooed everyone away including youngsters - snotty little shirt
