- X-Games Vert Best Trick 1999, including Hawk's 900.
This was rescued from dodgy old VHS tapes.
This is from an old Saturday morning show called RAD, which was on in the late 1990's to early 2000's.
i love how even though its a competition, everyone's super supportive. Thats pretty cool.
The understood the importance of him landing it. It's one trick they knew would never cost them a gold in a skate contest or anything, but it put skateboarding on the map. Definitely one of the biggest moments in the history of sports. That trick elevated the sport to insane heights.
Nowadays the kids would all be on their phones, probably on social media , taking selfies.
@@joshuaking-lambert7540 you act like these competitions went away lol they don't do that
Skating for you
Thats because they used to hang out everyday... notice most worlds best skaters are friends
You know you’re a legend when a 720 varial is your warm up...
Took place in 1999, uploaded to UA-cam in 2009, and now it’s the year 2019.
And its a 900
Its 2020 ._.
See you in 2029
@@drivewaystar6485 will do.
And I watched it for the first time in 2021
I remember watching this live. Man I'm getting old. IMO one of the best events in sports history. People have no idea how incredibly damnably impossible a 900 was on a vert ramp in the 90's. Most couldn't even rip a 720. And then a legend does the impossible in front of other legends.
Legendary.
hey you put this commet 7. years ok just wanted to say hi ps. i dont know you
@@vivxdhomechannle8978 someone finally answered his comment after such a long time.
*We are getting old
I was watching that live too. It was the summer I was headed to middle school.
@@RawDawg903 how old r u now ?
Notice everyone giving him their spirit powers like in dragon ball z to help him power up right before he landed it?
PhaseSkater ajahahajahah
PhaseSkater SKATERS...LEND ME YOUR ENERGY
Him and his fellow pro skaters have been trying for 10 years to land a 900 the commentator said; naturally only a hawk could soar that high and stick the landing whilst still looking graceful
Hell yeah....i noticed that shit.....
Notice how the most excited guy was the guy he beat for first place? It's all about seeing people do their thing
We edited our own footage into the feed we received from ESPN. We knew other stuff would go down that wouldn't make their cut. Like the Colin McKay tech lip craziness. This is the vid you are watching.
Thats pretty fucking rad bro
thank YOU! I've really only seen the back tail bigspin, Tony's varial 7, and the 9. Colin's switch shove nose slide shove is bonkers!!!
I was 19 back in 99 , watched this live with my homies.. Still gives me the chills when i member bout it..
I want to cry. I'm grateful to have been a part of this Golden age. Born summer of 1990. 90s for life.
I'm 1992 and love getting nostalgic, but it also makes me sad. Great childhood in the 1990's and the early 2000s
1990 ✨️🍾
1989 😁
Tony's face after he lands it gets me so stoked. You know he was hyped
Bobs one footed monty to fakie, wtf.
Best trick in my opinion
you mean 1 foot smith
@@999alex9991 Backside Smith's were invented by Monty Nolder and not Mike Smith, hence Monty Grind.
@@TheFlash3237 come on Better than the first ever 900 in competition? Don’t think so. But yea shit was awesome . Second best though…
@@rtctchr but literally everyone calls them smith grinds . Just the way it worked out …
I was there June 27 1999. It’s a tradition to visit that site and do it every year! The “X GAMES” logo is still there imbedded in the concrete,if your around the area it’s gated/fenced now and you have to climb over the fence or try to find a way in. If your sav enough you’ll find a way. It’s next to the Bay Bridge. 😎🤙🏼🍺🙏
Damn dude, I remember watching this video after I started skating when I was 9. This trick alone probably helped inspire the my life since then. People can call this guy a casual or whatever they want, but this guy touched a lot of people believe it or not. All in 1 seemingly impossible trick.
I was 15 when I watched this live. I had been skating for 7 years at that point and only knew it was hard and you got clowned constantly.
This showed me what it was about. This is why I still skate.
it got to the point where everyone stopped skating
man this tony hawk guy is so good. I hope he gets a video game named after him someday
He didn't engrave the animes like a pre schooler I have an orange 🍊 you get home froms I have to go ice cream 🍨 you get me my other account and episodes of the animes and episodes of the animes ya up after work I don't think I can get here it is me with the animes and then I'll get it now here we can 🥫🥫🥫🥫🥫 the animes and then we go
I remember this, I was in grade 6 or 7 and just getting into skate boarding. This was epic as fuck back then.
Hell yea, I was 11 years old back in '99 myself and getting hardcore into skating and snowboarding as well. I had a skateboard since like '93 but didn't start getting into it heavier like with tricks and grinds until later ; )
Hey its 2019 how old are you now
@@gogetassjdios1004 97.5 age years old when he passed, he lived a full life of non wit and small charm. Rip to that guy.
Still is epic as fuck
@@H0ldUp Heck yeah it is- OH JESUSYOU'RE A HORNET AAAAAAAAAAA
such a legendary trick, got the same feeling with travis prastranas double back flip
Legendary.
Bucky Lasek skating the vert ramp like a ledge was great.
Damn watching X-Games with my older cousin back in early 2000s was truly magical. Miss her for introducing me to X-Games and sports in general.
I lost my mind when I watched this go down in 99. Still boggles it. Absolutely insane for someone to just crank it out like that on a normal ramp.
Coheed
"This is the best day of my life," Said Tony in the heat of the moment, but after remembering his two wedding days, as well as the births of his two children, one of which was born just 3 months prior; He continued "I swear to God".
in a time without red bull paying everybody....witout gopros or drones.... .ahhh great times.
zerodoze hipster
The beautiful camera resolutions, music and video games were great. Great magazines and tv shows too. Nowadays it's all about selfies and social media.
They had drones. But, the cost about $300k and were massive gas powered behemoths with 100lbs cameras recording at 720p.
Yeah cause drone shots and go pro videos aren’t cool at all.
@@hzbenns is he a hipster? maybe.
is he right? definitely.
Little trip down the memory lane after JRE podcast with Tony Hawk! Good times!
I love the level of respect in the fact that all of the skaters just stopped skating to see Tony get the 900
I still remember this when I was 11. I almost cried right now from both the nostalgia and the triumph of Tony
Tony Hawk Sucess as a pro skateboarder has came a long way too bad he retired that same year in 1999 but this when he first came out with his game Tony Hawk Pro Skater video game turned pro in the '80's went on to be the best and greatest of all time throughout his whole life skateboarding never stop skating all the is his life legend he had good life always keeping his life private so cool.
Dude, they're doing stuff that would still win you competitions. That's fuckin insane!
I remember watching that on TV at the time. Dude was and is a legend.
Anyone else here after watching Andy MacDonald at the 2024 Paris Olympics?!!!! Insane he still has it.
3:46: "WTF I'M DID?"
That 900 was legendary the instant it happened. Just awesome ;)
Imagine if Bob Burnquist landed the 900. We would have all be playing BBPS this whole time.
I know I'm a year late but this isn't true. The game only came out 2 months later. It was already fully developed with his name on it. They actually had to add the trick in. This just helped boost publicity and sales massively, and happened to be impeccable timing not only for Tony and Neversoft, but for anyone that stood to make money of the game. Absolute fairytale.
I remember watching this with my buddies! God doesn't feel that long ago haha getting old
Still get goosebumps watching that 900 land. Watching it live was something else.
This will always be legendary
this video is ill. i watched this all those years ago but i just got chills again
For anyone they seen this live on tv, ESPN played it on tape delay. It was filmed earlier and edited down for time constraints. Otherwise the word "Live" would appear in the corner. The 2002 Winter X-Games were the first to receive live coverage on the network. The only way you saw it unfold in real time is if you have a ticket stub for that date
People say that, meaning the time it originally aired. Whether it was a live feed isn’t what we’re thinking. It’s the fact that we didn’t see it re-run.
so much hype there that day. awesome.
I remember watching it as it happened! Every time I watch it, I laugh and smile. :)
Спасибо автору канала дБ редкое видео! )Круто когда не теряешь надежды и даёшь видео материалу вторую жизнь!
Even though I know the outcome. I’m still getting pumped watching him try
I’ll take 1999 over 2021 all day
So the hand touching the ground and pushing him up really still counts??
Damn.. I remember watching this on tv when I was little. lol
What happened to this event? So creative, it would be amazing to watch. Watching history go down with new tricks every year
tonys face at 3:46
Man Bob was really pushin it, that 1 Smith doh
That front side back slide was sick.)
This commentary is so late 90s it’s making my face hurt.
I remember watching this live
they really really need to bring best trick back. i think it would help to push the sport further.
I remember this day was amazing
i too have this on vhs, back in the days when channel 5 ruled with their late night sports
Duuuude, Bob burnquist.. Didn't listened that name in ages
seen it live and flipped over the back of my couch
ohhh a remember watching this live..
the best of best saludos de CHILE...tony
Hi there, can you please let me know which VHS tape you captured this footage from?
Back when skateboarding, MTV and eating pizza rolls was cool!
TONY HAWK IS GOD OF STAKEBOARDING :D ♥
I love how Andy MacDonald has been wearing yellow all my life.
I remember watching that
You just knew he was going to make it.
the song is called Stereo situation - trans am
@Luka Hamilton 2:07 contains the answer
@Luka Hamilton I actually tried looking for it by name too and couldn't find anything on it. Soon hopefully
Back when skating was cool
Interessante como esse vídeo me levou para uma época que sinto saudades.
Com ctz
Were they still doing slob fast plants in ramps during those times?
why cant i find any videos of tony hawks 360 varial mctwist during his last xgames???
Oh dude do you have the full video of the entire game? I would absolutely love to see the original footage.. I feel like these edits are completely missing the energy building up to the 900. You would be my hero if you could upload that :)
Definitely I saw this live you could feel it in the air that last attempt!!!! You just felt he was gonna land it!
His comments at the end are the best part.
@hawaiicanal89 you are correct, colin won with like a shuvit tailslide shuvit out or back tail big spin.... Tony got 2nd with a 720 varial
03:30 Look at Bucky Lasek!!! It was his mantra givin to Tony, which led Tony to stay on the board a few seconds later xD
Bucky doesnt get enough credit. xD
Now we have to push for the 1080.
All the legends
man this is somthing
2020 an still fucking Incredible!!
3:10 arcade craniacs is a Time Traveller
Anyone know the song ? its pretty good!
Wheres Tas Pappas? Dude was close to landing that night too.
next level
would have been cool to see tas Pappas in the mix that night
To mrclarky9999, agreed on a Mega its totally different. And at this time Tony was the first skater ever to land the 900
lol the sarcasm in this guy's voice
So sick!
yeah yeah
amazing!
"My brain is spinning faster every minute... yeah I'm really not shureee!!"
his arm on the ground helped a lot
I wonder what the song's called. Anyone got an idea?
Its over 900!!
this should be taught at school in history lessons
tony hawk warms up with a 720 varial
At 3:29 when Bob burnquist and bucky lasek were giving him powers ot reminds me of giving tony a sensor bean to heal from dragon ball z 🤣🤣🤣🤣
lol at Disney's Tarzan. well he does pull off some awesome slide's on those trees
Tarzan is a rollerblader.
He on x-games mode
3:30 giving Tony Hawks spirit a rub as well
AND ALL THE TRICKS WERE DONE THAT DAY
Yeah, but on the mega ramp. Do you know how much more time they have in the air on that thing?
steven hunt Still more impressive on the half pipe. They need to spin faster rather than get Air time
It would not have mattered even half as much if Tony didn't land that 900 first, It had to be him.
Tas should have been in. He would have made it lively 👁
You do realize it took him 15 years to land it, right?
... on a mega ramp.
