Man, I was there. Had just graduated high school. Me and a bunch of friends drove up to see the games. Awesome time. Fun fact: One of the BMX riders (might have been Dave Mirra) said he planned on jumping the ramp into the water, but ESPN producers told all of the athletes that anyone attempting to jump into the water would be kicked out of the games and banned from subsequent X Games. Then Tony Hawk goes and does it and ESPN thought it was the coolest thing ever. Ran all day and night on the highlight shows. Who knew. haha
Tony has talked about how the early 90s were HARD for him financially, since vert wasn’t as popular as it was in the 80s. He wasn’t making that bread like he was in those Powell Peralta days! The X Games in many ways helped save Tony’s career and brought vert back to life!
Yeah, the X Games definitely helped him out. Vert was still pretty dead for a while, though, even in the early 2000's. I think the X Games helped the established vert pros make a decent living while skateboarding was still hyper-focused on street. And then Tony's career exploded, which resulted in his foundation building loads of parks; I think those parks are really what has led to the resurgence of vert and transition skating more than anything. I stopped paying attention to magazines around 2004 or 2005, and when I started looking at them again in like 2008 there was way more focus on transition than there had been last time I looked. And it's only gotten more popular since then. The lack of variety is pretty much the reason I stopped paying attention in the first place, too; it kinda got old seeing the same kind of stuff over and over.
No doubt that this was amazing during its era. Truly remarkable at that time, Tony knew how to push boundaries. Honestly though, it's nothing special to those moderate boarders considering this is some basic shit, but there's always that simple fact: That this skating was truly amazing for its time.
I always thought it was Chad Muska that did this. Seemed like something Muska would do lol. That dude was nuts back in the day. Memory gets fuzzy in you old age man I'm tellin ya
Something about the way Tony looks when he hits those jumps. It's very unique. A style he invented and spread throughout the world. Kind of like Michael Jordan's shooting form. Perfect.
why do people hate on Tony so much? I mean he's a respectable skateboarder. maybe his style is more old school or whatever, but it's not to say he is over rated. he just grew up skating in the 80's. hell I wish I grew up skating then. better than how skater are today, wearing girly clothes, and have no testosterone what so ever. tony is a true legend.
+Swaggyllama It's old footage. Perhaps the English version isn't available. It's just commentary so it doesn't really matter. At least the commentary is original, unlike your comment
Nice. I absolutely love that park. Ive got a couple by me but i find myself comparing them to SPOT and they fail miserably. 'love skating the small warehouse and it's mini
Amazing moment in skateboarding history.we use to have jump ramp into a pound back in the mid 80s.we would do some video game tricks off that thing that later on took em 2 a real launch ramp.good times
Adrenaline, but primarily because he had the skill level. If you pick it apart it's a pretty narrow lane after the drop in and a decent size gap, that no one else would have been capable of doing at that contest.. oh the 90s, a simpler time
He jumped in because all the skaters were talking about how close the ramp was to the water and that it was possible but risky to make the water but no one wanted to either A) risk a board or B) waste a round trying to clear the pier. So, Tony being Tony, pushed the envelope and manned up.
I thought what the hell is that language? But I then realized it's my native language. I just didn't expect that lol. When you're on the internet you expect everything to be English or another language that I speak but not Dutch when you click on something so this was a little weird haha. I remember watching skateboarding vids on the internet with my older sister and playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater. What always comes to mind when I think of the Pro Skater game was that helicopter in that game which you could activate by grinding over a blade, and I also remember the shattering glass. Good memories :p
Tony Hawk is like a retired jersey in the NBA. Nobody can wear his image or likeness. Chris Cole is my favorite skater of my lifetime but This guy was amazing .Chad Muska, Geoff Rowley, Rodney Mullen, and Eric Koston really don’t get credit like Hawk but that’s ok. They all are individually different skaters so that’s more low key why they don’t come up on the radar. EDIT: Rodney Mullen has gotten credit where it’s due just had to mention that

That 360 spin at 0:24 was so effin perfect!!
It like exactly how it looks on a tony hawk pro-skater game.
Damn - '96... Was this really that long ago?! I remember watching this on TV, what a legend.
Yep....and now its been well over a decade since your comment.
Its flying by.
My mom was there. We have lived in Newport all our lives. I've been skating since 3 years old. This is awesome.
Tony has talked about how the early 90s were HARD for him financially, since vert wasn’t as popular as it was in the 80s. He wasn’t making that bread like he was in those Powell Peralta days! The X Games in many ways helped save Tony’s career and brought vert back to life!

This park is so sketchy lol
And Birdman still sliced the shit out of that “sketch bowl”
That´s the spirit! have fun!
3:00 whoa!
Back when the xgames were worth watching. 1999 900 was simply AMAZING!
No doubt that this was amazing during its era. Truly remarkable at that time, Tony knew how to push boundaries. Honestly though, it's nothing special to those moderate boarders considering this is some basic shit, but there's always that simple fact: That this skating was truly amazing for its time.
You basicly said the same thing 3 times..
Leonardus Augustinus RVRAAAAWR
like tony did the same trick 3 times??
purplinko Yes both 3s, good looking.
I always thought it was Chad Muska that did this. Seemed like something Muska would do lol. That dude was nuts back in the day. Memory gets fuzzy in you old age man I'm tellin ya

i remember on his games, when you jumped into the water "YOU BIG DRIP!"
I remember that, I was so psyched when he did that that was the highlight of that x games!!
My teacher knew tony hawk. Tony inspired me to skate
Sure...
ItsReactive77 oh thanks that really helps me! ;)
Rampage Kurt don't trust anything that is said by people who force children to repeat lies for a living
.. teachers.
lol
Rampage Kurt better change your profile pic then
I was there. Went there to watch beach volleyball. But this was the memory that sticks.
what a weird street course? all spines and quarter pipes with one rail? weird.
Early days of Xgames there was a lot of vert overlap
I remember the brand airwalk
I begged for them. I got Voigt. Meh
they are still about but not as good as they were.
The Hawk digivolved into a fish
Tony just Unlocked the secret area
Its so weird that I live where this happened. Seeing that street closed off is really strange.
So Glad you Tell us, cant say what´s happend if i didnt know that
Film that street and post in on YT (then let me know)!
he'd always do his best to compete, BUT i've always loved how he reminds everyone that it's about having fun! :-)
He basically said fuck it. Swoosh!
I love his little kickflip at 0:58
I remember this I was only 16 years old
Listen to the one dude SCREAM with excitement when he pops that kickflip. Actually LOL'D
why do people hate on Tony so much? I mean he's a respectable skateboarder. maybe his style is more old school or whatever, but it's not to say he is over rated. he just grew up skating in the 80's. hell I wish I grew up skating then. better than how skater are today, wearing girly clothes, and have no testosterone what so ever. tony is a true legend.
destin lolley love your backwards hat. screams testosterone
Also he's a Vert skater first and foremost. Nobody ever expected to crush in street comps.
“Girly clothes”
i think he actually started skating back in the 70s like i did, but he didnt get known till the 80s
wow, man, i remember that match was in 1996 or 1997. when i was 14 years old. first time to know tony hawk.
Am i the only one who hâte the commentator voice
he sound germany but yeah
yolo nation
no.. not german.. sounds dutch/hollandia
oder wie auch immer man es nennt
i would hate speaking that language constantly gargling to say some words
yolo nation it is dutch, and yea it is an annoying voice
no he speaks dutch and even if you speak dutch, his voice is still very annoying. he speaks like he just read about skateboarding in a book
Stop making us feel old :P
Skip to 2:05 for him to do it
i like how people dont even know tony hawk as a skater anymore, they now know him as "that guy that went on epicmeal time" :)
''toetje op de slagroom'' wut lol
''dessert the cream''
more like "icing on the cake"
Water or not! That Gap was INSANE to clear!👍
I wonder if Tony Hawk skateboard still down there

Playing it up 4 the camera s, bills 2 pay, mouths 2 feed, but tus pappas...or tas pappas, twas the real nut crazy tallent ed asshole sk8er...back then
Back in the day when you didnt have to check your pockets for cellphone before swimming
Funny I remember watching this haha
i remember being 2 at that time
I had this on VHS, I recoreded it from Eurosport-channel.
Awsome!!! That's why people love him. He's always doing something wild and over the top.
bold move..real skaters!!
Damn, skateboarding has progressed sooo much since then.
Did they find his board?
Probably not :)
Kids were in the water right after the interview looking for it. I think someone probably got it.
My God! I remember that when I watched it alive!
That's amassing how this time goes...
Roses are red
Violets are blue
Title is in English
Video should be too

Nice. I absolutely love that park. Ive got a couple by me but i find myself comparing them to SPOT and they fail miserably. 'love skating the small warehouse and it's mini
What about his skateboard
amazing how fast this sport evolved
Hij wou zeggen "wat een debiel" xD
Wat een deb.... wat een schitterend! hahahaha
Amazing moment in skateboarding history.we use to have jump ramp into a pound back in the mid 80s.we would do some video game tricks off that thing that later on took em 2 a real launch ramp.good times

+SK8 Boarders kut
legend has it, the skateboard is still there.
Roses are red violets are blue the title of this video is English, the language should be too
Tony hawk inspired me to start skating
I imagine the feeling of falling out of bounds before having your own video game franchise telling you not to do so
*PFFT*
I witnessed this in person it was awesome. I also got to meet him that same day
interesting, back then they wore pads on a "street course" like this, but nowadays you hardly see any skaters wearing any pads during the x games
Damn this just made me feel old....i was 13. Best part about this....that was the "street" course.
0:58 most exaggerated YEAH i've heard and i love it
Tony deserves 100000 points for that run
I remember watching that on TV :)
Legends say the board is still in the ocean...
I don't think the fact that that McTwist was in the same run as that kickflip to fakie will ever become un-funny to me haha
And three years later he did THE 900! Epic guy :D
he can do that stuff...he started off doing vert actually and even competed in vert comp before.
i miss the days when he was the 'poster-boy' of skating. :( it was his life and the sport sure wouldnt be where it was today without him.
I love this undefeatable spirit. He feels victorious for the stunt. He did his best street run but doesnt give a fuck he finished 7th.
He jumped in because all the skaters were talking about how close the ramp was to the water and that it was possible but risky to make the water but no one wanted to either A) risk a board or B) waste a round trying to clear the pier. So, Tony being Tony, pushed the envelope and manned up.
eindelijk een nederlands tony hawk filmpje
man, best skater ever.
Tony Hawks run, would be today a armateur's run. Skateboarding got so much trickyer!!
Nock *trickier
I read the title and figured it was some sort of euphemism.
Nope. He really did jump into the water. 😂

Tony Hawk is like a retired jersey in the NBA. Nobody can wear his image or likeness.
