The way I write my characters, they always have a somewhat specific goal. I try to keep it vague enough so that organizers can play around with it if they decide to incorporate it in the game as a personnal quest, but specific enough so that my character feels like he has a clear objective, something to work toward. This, in turn, also gives your character room for growth and ensures that your background is just a prologue to your story while the goal is the next chapter. For instance, one of my characters was used as a lab rat by a wizard and wants revenge, which is specific enough so organizers can make a wizard show up in the game as my enemy, but I haven't described him in enough details to force them into a specific character. Another of my characters has a much more vague goal, he just wants his clan to strive, so he does whatever to bring in money, secure alliances and crush their enemies. This is much less likely to be used as fuel for a personnal quest, but gives my character a reason behind every major action that he takes and gives him motivation and something to work toward.
I completely agree that backgrounds can be way to complicated! Living your characters Life instead of talking about where your character has been is a Perfect example of this. Wonderful Video, thank you for sharing!🌷
Thank you, it's not going up in my new studio though as I have something different for the wall. But there may still be a Game of Thrones touch in there ☺️
I love writing complex background but there's this thing where you get in your own way when you try too hard and don't let your character develop in game.
Definitely! I'm trying to write a character background right now, and am still trying to find that balance between a good backstory but with room to grow ☺️
Really glad it was helpful and welcome to larp, the most addictive hobby I've ever had! I have a specific video coming on Monday about larping in 2021 if you're interested.
