The Duché de Bicolline is a permanent LARPing (Live Action Roleplaying) village in Quebec, Canada situated on nearly 350 acres. There are hundreds of wooden structures, tent villages, a fort, and a battlefield. Because cellphones, tablets, PCs, and the like and not allowed to be visible during events, video of the village is rare.

Would you go to this event??
Also, thank you to the subscribers who convinced me to try LARPing. Never forget 🫶
I'll think about it. ;)
Just heard of this from another channel. Can you tell me if it's family-friendly? I have a 2-year-old but I would aim for when he is 6 or older.
@@MNSweet Very family friendly! Lots of kids and babies around.
@dastyni13 I'm guessing by the reply in a way that you have been there already and your previous comment with the ;) you were likely in the video.
I WAS at that event !
A little bit of background and extra information, incase people may be interested.
Quebec's history of LARPs was heavily influenced by the French speaking LARP scenes in France and Belgium in the 70s and 80s, which was very involved in roleplaying and staying true to the theme, as opposed to the United States approach that is often oriented towards Renaissance Faires. That form of LARPing, called Grandeur Nature (or GN, literally "Nature Size" but closer to Live-Action), is focused on characters, quests, roleplaying and often feels closer to a live action roleplaying game (think a TTRPG but you're playing your character and there's several GMs and a whole organization).
We have a lot of small GNs scattered across the province and Bicolline (Duché de Bicolline) is the largest, by far. In the past decade, Bicolline has had a bit of a rebrand, becoming both a RenFaire, a major event and a GN. It still features a lot of politics, but has become much more than its politics, guilds and missions (I'm glad you did mention "the great game", as that is indeed the core focus of Bicolline, a game of polities and guilds vying for power and domination, wealth and glory). It also used to be French only whereas today it is much more possible to get into RP in English.
I'm glad you had a blast. I used to be a regular in the early 00s and miss it dearly. I've been meaning to go back. This was a fantastic video and a great throwback to another period in my life.
Cheers.
Grandeur Nature means large nature.
@@lazyvipurr4698 It doesn't.
Grandeur means height or size in this case, especially given the context of Quebec French.
The literal translation is "Nature Size", referring to the fact that it is about "live" roleplaying, as opposed to tabletop roleplaying.
Source: I'm a translator, based in Quebec, and have been in the scene for about 25 years now.
@@MrLuchenkov I have a question for you. I have seen a vid about PQ French being of the royal French from the 1400-1700's, since that is was spoken at the time when the fur traders brought the language to Canada. France's French has evolved different from PQ French. Is this true? Guy from Saskatoon wants to know.
Also, is it just me, is she saying anything? I can't get past those eyes and eyebrows. So many women get botoxed up and one cannot see their eyes.
@@bradyelich2745 In a simplified way, yes, Quebec French is closer to the French that was spoken at the court of Versailles in the 1680s-1750s (not so much for 1400-1600).
Quebec French still uses several expressions and words that are seen as outdated and even archaic in metropolitan France. Notable examples include but are not limited to vadrouille, champlure, magasin/magasiner, char, débarrer, linge (in the context of a specific item of clothing), chaudron, breuvage, etc.
Most importantly, Metropolitan French experienced major pronunciation changes over the course of the 19th and early 20th century while Quebec French, being isolated from France following the Conquest of 1760, didn't. It'd take a much longer post to go into all the changes, but they can be summarized thus:
--> Metropolitan French had a gradual merging of /œ̃/ and /ɛ̃/, both are realized as [æ̃]. Quebec French didn't.
--> Metropolitan French lost the phoneme /ɑ/, merged with /a/, both are realized as [ä]. Quebec French didn't.
--> Metropolitan French lost the phoneme /ə/, merged with /ø/, both are realized as [ø]. Quebec French didn't.
--> Metropolitan French lost the phoneme /ɛː/, merged with /ɛ/, both are realized as [ɛ]. Quebec French didn't.
--> A handful of nasal vowels also ended up diverging over the centuries.
The end result is that Quebec French and Metropolitan French pronunciations have notable differences, but are still mutually intelligible (despite what some people seem to think or say). Quebec French and Metropolitan French are as close to one another as Scots English and American English can be.
Ah Hello it is me Ishmael, you met me and my brother Victor at the Ordo party. I wanted to let you know that our little brother Timmy got his extra crutch thanks to your solar, and now stands a chance from the hordes of racoons that assail him every night when we go on our business ventures. I must go, Victor is eager for the horse tranquilizer you know how he gets. Farewell our most valued customer, hopefully we shall do business again!
Yip, nutta alert!
ROFL
..... what the fuck did I just read??? LOL
Hello! I'm a Japanese larp player! I'd heard about Bicolline before, but I'm really happy to see it on video. It's a really elaborate event with buildings and decorations, and it's just as good as I'd heard...
I can't speak English yet, but I'll study and do my best to go to events overseas, like in the US 🙋
That sounds amazing, I'm curious on what the LARP experience is in Japan. I hope you can make it to Bico one day.
This is canada, not US
Militum!
Thank you for showing off so much of my guild in this video. We're not that spooky. ❤
I LOVE MILITUM
Just a clarification about zoo day at Bico. It is Friday and they call it the day of discovery. Outsiders come and see us, like we're the animals in a zoo. It's a great way for people that don't play the game to see what it's all about. The big battles take place on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, so those visitors don't get to see that, but they can possibly see skirmishes going on. Otherwise, very informative video.
Oh, and things aren't really "stealable". I mean, among friends maybe or on a quest, but not in general.
@@calebhand1180 This is important information! there has been many stealing this year, and many people did not get there item back. this is not ok.
This is basically the Burning Man of larping and I love it!
Hi,I did Bicolline for 10 years,I was at the beginning of it,the first year when there was nothing but a giant field and a few tents and ppls in hockey mask hitting each others with pvc sticks.Pretty amazing to see how it had evolved over the years.I am glad you liked it and you learn a little bit of french along the journey, great video!👽⚔
Oooooh! That's my gang at 16:00 :D so great to see some footage of the fort defense! Also, the bagpipe player is called McKraken, she's from the Colibri! had the chance to chat a bit with her and she's super sweet and helpful with questions regarding her instruments!
Looks like you had a great time! It was very enjoyable to watch your video about this cool event. Let's go larpers!
I have dreamed of going to Bicolline ever since I first heard about it. Chronic health conditions, and limited mobility will probably keep me from ever actually being able to go, but it's still a fun fantasy. If I ever get a full body transplant, it will be one of the first things I do 🙂. Until then, I'll enjoy watching the videos other folks make about their experiences.
I was just wondering how accessible it is. My middle kiddo wants to go!!
“Drinking tea while everyone around you is screaming, it doesn’t get better than that.” 😍
Never LARPed before, just signed up for TVN
Suuuud! :D
This was my first year going, and my brother and I went on our own (TVN is handy for people with money but little time to do logistics, but we're both ex-military and used to wrangling international travel and managed to do it for a third the cost including airfare, which was worth the hassle for us) and had a blast. Due to the heat (we're from Alaska) I spent a good chunk of it in the river trying not to be a heat casualty, but we turned even that into an adventure as we just started at the Non-Decorum bridge and swam/floated our way all the way down the river to the main pool... aaaand then promptly remembered we'd left our shoes, towels, etc. on the complete other end of the site and had to do the Walk of Shame through both Old and New town soaking wet and in bathing suits (or boxer-briefs in one guy's case 🤣 ) barefoot. It was fun :D
Due to work I won't be able to make it back next year, but plan on coming out with my daughters in 2026 as my oldest will be 16 and able to fight :)
What you described about the lack of cell phones in texting is how these events were for us in the 90s. I've done the SCA, but this looks amazing.
I loved it so much. It’s hard going back to normal life after this experience.
UA-cam really wants me to watch Bicolline stuff huh? First Trix, now you. I mean, Im all for it XD
ive been wanting to go to Bicolline since i first discovered it in 2018, now that im finally an adult i hope some day i can go. It's really interesting to see how far its come since those days.
GOOOOOOO
I already live in The Blue Ridge mountains of Appalachia, since 2018..almost off grid. There is no cell phone service. There is landline and DSL internet. That is it. I have learned a lot about survival. I do live in a huge 1938 circa house. The mountains are peaceful but no one reaches out to help me adjust. The adventures are amazing. I am a 75 year old woman living alone in the mountains surrounded by National forests. My life is an adventure - for real every day.
"The asmr of the Grand Battai was magical" Ah yes, the sounds of fighting and people "dying"
I have always loved Bicolline! And your videos are always a fun watch so thank you for sharing your adventure!
🥰🥰🥰 thank you so much for watching!! Have you been to Bico too???
@@justlanchen No I sadly haven't, I have been wanting to go for around 5 years now and hope to go in the next year or two! 😊(so thanks again, videos like these help fill the bico shaped hole in my heart lmao)
Solid video! Very informative and thorough (as much as one can be with this sort of event). Thanks for sharing your experiences!
Had so much fun hanging with you! Can’t wait for next year 👀 💕
I sure hope I’ll be there!!!! 🥰🥰
Dang, I was right there in that Ordo procession to the fort and at the skirmishes Monday. Great footage and such good times. Such a great video!
That's pretty cool! I think a friend who's in the SCA/HEMA scene in Vermont mentioned this event very briefly even though it's in Quebec, further up north from this state. I don't LARP but used to play TTRPGs in the past and currently do epee fencing. It looks like great fun, though.
Im sooo glad i clicked on this video.. i should have listened to my friend that was inviting me to get there over 10 years ago when we were teenagers, but its never too late to go!!
Bicolline addresses some of the reasons I dropped out of the SCA. I love that the surroundings and language would feel more authentic at Bicolline. I would go alone through the business you mentioned, since it sounds like you would make friends fast. However, I'm wondering whether you can actually get enough sleep there. Did I hear you mention there is a quiet camp area? I'm into recreating history, but staying up all night, partying, isn't my thing.
This video came across my UA-cam feed and I clicked it thinking "wow, this is going to be awkward watching all these people play medieval times".... I got hooked, watched the entire video, and I'm checking out The Voyage North. This looks amazing! I have a new bucket list item!
OMG I LOVE THAT. So happy you enjoyed it!!
29:18 I recognize that cup! Or at least the engraving pattern. Indian brass, couldn't be more fitting though.
Welcome to the larp community. Never been to Bico myself but I’ve been regularly larping for two years now in the general NY PA NJ area. It’s a lot of fun!
Hello there! What groups would you recommend for first time LARPers?
In my area there are many that you can attend! I haven’t really left like these 3 states because of issues with regards to extended travel however I have had a lot of Fun at Alterra which is a smaller larp that meets once a month in PA or NJ. I also regularly attend Knightrealms aka KR which is fun but is definitely much larger and can be somewhat overwhelming to first timers, but just like Alterra there are many who are happy to welcome you in and help you get sorted!
Finally I have heard good things from my friends about Neverafter which only recently started within the last year! I have not gotten to that larp yet though. If you are looking for something outside of High Fantasy I know a few who enjoy Dystopia Rising which has chapters across the country of the United States.
Ultimately I found that local larps are more enjoyable to me over blockbuster larps. You can attend more frequently and get to know the people you are playing with which has definitely made for longer lasting friendships.
@@brinashiloff3439 thank you so much for the detailed response!😊I have wanted to find a LARP group for so long (after playing D&D for many years) but have had a tougher time finding anything around me(I'm in Brooklyn). Will definitely look into all these.
@@valkyrieneedsfood hope to see you at Alterra or KR! I’m always happy to help out new faces.
WOW! That sounds and looks amazing! Thanks for sharing.
🤯 absolutely had no idea this was a thing... and I'm here for it. Looking forward to more videos - I am super intrigued! ^_^
Crazy right!!! It’s an incredible event
It looks like it! I have been watching only videos about Bicolline on UA-cam since I watched this one lol Any ren faire is my happy place. I often say that I'd live at one.... and until I saw this video, I thought working a season at my local (MN Ren Faire) was a top tier/life goal lol Bicolline is that times 100.
Hi! I like you video! I did go to Bicolline this years for the 3th time. And i like your point of views! I'm with a french viking guild, on the "côte Norse" so we are not in the same spot. And I would like to point an error, BicoZoo is friday, it's the decouvert day and the Grande Bataille is saturday. I would like to see the others videos that you'll do on the subject!
I've never tried this but it looks really fun, thanks for sharing in an interesting way!
Very nice video! I had no idea it was an advertisement for the voyage north, but it was very well done. Good job! Every time I see someone make a video for Bico - I definitely want to go! But... it's much more difficult for me - I'm disabled... getting better tho! So hopefully one day! Looks like a lot of fun! I used to boffer LARP for over 20+ years.
Only the last 10 minutes.
That skirmish is honestly top 3 highlights of bico for me! 😆😆😆
Yall killed it that was wild
same! it was a highlight of my life
great vid and i'm super jealous. merci, mon ami. I'm a Canadian (Nova Scotia) and I've wanted to go to Bicolline for years. Joining a combat guild/house sounds exciting and exhausting
Great video! Bicolline is definitely on the list to get to!
you won't regret it!!!
Thank you so much for this video, this was great - I've been wanting to go for year now, and gotta wait a bit longer to save up, but your video solidified it for me even more, I just have to go at least once!!
Great video. Saw you and yours being amazing, tho long week and full schedule prevented me from visiting all parts of your group this year.
Hard to believe it was your first larp based on your fighting in the video!
If you return come visit your neighbors, and play in 'Duel Alley' if you want to test your fighting prowess! :)
-your neighbors, GenAsher Fells, Lys Noir.
Great job on your video showing Bico, how to get involved, and how accessible that game can be. Kudos.
It sounds like a lot of fun. As a guy that is raising 4 kids in working class America I'm never going to be able to go. But it looks supper cool.
Thank you for sharing this
It was so awesome hanging out with you during Bicolline! Getting to see all of it again in the video is even better!!! I can't wait to see you again next year! -Crow
I'm so happy you liked it and we met!!!! I am thrilled you got that footage of Steve!! I was lmfao while editing it 😂
Hah we were behind you on the bus ride :p Glad you had a great time at bico
This looks SO FUN!!!
It was a blast!
The skirmish was clutch. Hearing your heart beat was showing your excitement and adrenaline rush.
RIGHT. main character moment for me
So I saw Jess's video first, (Trix - Nova Veta). Between the 2 videos, it really shows how a person can go to the same even with the same group, and judging by your BRoll be on the same bus, but have completely different experiences. I've been a follower of both your channels for some time. Was there anyone else there on a media pass that you can point me too to see different views? Ideally family related but not required.
I am with the Marchwarden guild and i make videos on Bicolline if you are interested! I do a lot of battle videos but i also have other videos on random things at bicolline and walks through the towns. I had a ton of good footage this year but it got stolen at the event!
@@TallianAdventures in game stolen or file a police report not getting it back stolen
@@MNSweet If only it was just in game stolen! No unfortunately It was real life thief! I literally think it was a real life cutpurse! they cut pouches off of my belt while i had it hanging up.
@@TallianAdventures good to know.
@@MNSweet Ex staff here, no police there. It has been years since the St-Boniface police said they wanted to help, but since nobody call them for anything (r*pe, physical aggression, r-drug problem), they cannot do anything to help, sadly.
The duché de Bicolline prefer dealing with it the good old way, talking it out.
I miss Bico, but damn... I hate how they deal with their volunteer/employees/victims. No wonder why they had two sex offender in their management team for over 10 years.
Just a clarification youre not allowed to steal at Bico, unless its specifically somthing that has been tagged as a stealable item. Theft is still illegal and can get you kicked from the event
You not only sold me I’m fully committed to my new personality and obsession. Like I told my bestie, we all knew it was coming.
Haha I love that!!
@justlanchen thank you for sharing your journey with us. I had no idea about this festival or that every ren fair is so different. I can't wait to go to mine this year and see all the unique things we have (northern california).
This looks amazing! I'm not even into larp. Great video thanks!
Thanks for watching!
I was worried about combat but having a tea party with the fae and being a combat healer sounds awesome. I’d definitely love to experience this someday!
Ok!! I was sleeping right beside the fireplace where you were speaking with the Dragonnier X-D I..ehm..admired your patience and politeness hahaha
That looks absolutely epic.
"Not like in Role Models".
Proceeds to shout "HUZZAH!" :P
Niceee Didn't see that you were filming the Dagger fight that night😂.
I was so tired already of the day and my back was hurt too😅😂 my friends and I started thoses last year and we wanted to do it friday but some people recognize us that night at the tavern and that's how it started it again!
I'm curious if technology isn't allowed, how can one film? Looks super fun!
I had permission!!
It was still super hard though
@@justlanchen Ahhh ok that makes sense! Thx :)
A lot of people use hidden GoPros mounted in helmets or pouch rigs that allow the lens to poke out. It's doable so long as the camera is not obvious.
It's not "openly allowed". If you pull out your phone to take a picture, no one minds. If you were walking down the street taking selfies... people... still might not say anything... but they might say "ne pas decorum!" (not decorum!) No one really wants to, and during the GB we know there are a lot of folks making content and that is just... its cool, it's fine. That is how Bico is. The CHILDREN heckle non-decorum more than the adults do, lol.
With all things, including french, and staying in character - "trying" is valued over everything. Greet folks in the Morning with "Bon matin!". Say "merci" when you can. If you understand something, say "weh" (or way, or quack like a duck). It means "yeah". No one says "oui"(wee).
Most folks will switch into english and there... you tried.
That is Bico. Just try. Our game blows up from 600 to 5,500 for a week... 8 of 9 people you see will be new, or once-a-year...
We are zen with it. Even my core group of 16 blows up to 30ish. It happens. But that also includes our kids... and friends... and wonderful visitors.
It's fine. We invited you. Just "try", and everyone is cool. :)
We don't have anything approaching this in the UK. We are too reserved and we observe rather than participate. It looks like great fun. Thanks for the video.
You really do!! Look up Empire larp
so happy you liked it 🥰
Empire larp, Lorien trust, Menhirs fate… I can only dream of the larps you have access to in the UK. Go listen to the Larp Noobs podcast.
@@AdamMclardy I never knew that existed. Thanks.

Wow. That looked soooo cool.
And you look amazing,totally Skyrim
skyrim for sure!!!!
I'm sold! Told my daughter she's going next year and she should get her affairs in order!
I'm dying to try it out. You should also check out the SCA. In particular Pennsic.
Wow! I’ve always wanted to try LARPing and this sounds like one of the coolest ways to do it! It’s too bad I just don’t have the time handy to dedicate a week to it, but who knows!
You should go for it!
Looks awesome! 🤘💯
RIGHT?!
Great video!! I love how so many people think the Marchwardens are mercenaries! And pirates! They always think we are pirates lol! Im sad I didnt get to meet you this year! hopefully if you come next year i can say hi.
32:08 did anyone else noticed Brian Kibler :)
This randomly popped up on my feed...I'm extremly interested and going to look into it more. A bit difficult for me with no experience and I'm a very quiet guy...I feel that it would be difficult to role play
This looks like LARPs in Europe about 20 years ago. Nostalgica sets in.
It was wonderful to meet you and hope to see again next year! -Qrow
That looks absolutely awesome. Just out of curiosity, how did you do the filming? I saw kiki cool mossy phone stick camouflage. Did you do something similar or where you just sneaky?
another one hook on bico, Fun video to watch to beat up the bico blues
and yet there is so much more
That's how I feel about texting. But that's because I'm 58 years old, and used to actually live without smartphones & the internet. 😜
This is so cool! OMG I gotta do this sometime!!!
yea i want to go to this real bad now thank you!!!!
hey great video i loved fighting against you in the tournament and can't wait to see you next year
hahah it was a blast!! til next time
Also!!! I forgot to mention! IN NO WAY are you allowed to "raid"' other camps at will! Those were all pre planned and were not just a raid for raids sake!!
well we did go to raid a vampire guild, that wasn't planned 😂 but no one would lead us there, I guess that makes sense
@@justlanchen no worries! I just wanted to make that clear. I have heard of larps where camp raiding is a thing but it is not at Bicolline. In my four years I have only ever seen camp raids that were part of a set story and were pre planned by both guilds. I also think it is somewhere in the official bico rules that its not allowed but i will have to double check that! I just didnt want people thinking you are not even safe to relax in your own camp without getting raided or having things stolen. Especially if you do not know the guild it is etiquette to not enter camps without permission.
Yo, came biff with nova next time, if i had have known how much you were enjoying fighting, we would have grabbed you more!

Yet another amazing place to go.
i would so love this to do, its like i finaly found me people
I’ve known about Bico for a while ever since I saw UA-cam videos about it by Mo Mo O’Brien and others. I haven’t LARPed before and I’ve tried looking into ones in my area but they are all boffer LARPs and I’m more interested in full immersion. Realistic looking weapons, themed outfits, etc. I used to be a camp counselor one week out of the summer at a camp where we would have capture the flag at night and we would dress in full camo and face paint and run around in the forest. We also had a zombie game at night and I was always a zombie dripping in blood capturing/scaring people. I’m also into mermaiding. I love the combination of dressing up mixed with physical activity so I’m really dreaming of the day I can go to a LARP like this. I wish more people gave it a chance. I don’t think it is cringy at all but my husband does even though he loves video games and playing DND. I don’t know why he wouldn’t want to take it one step further and be a character. I’d love to!
Rothenburg is so cool in Germany

I very much am
😢
@@justlanchen It comes a bit every year but you’ll see it quickly turn into excitement for the next one!

Dude this looks so fun!
It was a BLAST
Something you have to know about the language barrier is that in Quebec most people are bilingual even if we can't speak English well we understand it enough to carry conversations but also we refuse to speak English when other Canadians refuse to learn French so that's why you might come across people who won't even try.
It's a mental ideological barrier out of victimization. The thing is everyone has to learn French but when they do, quebeckeris will not learn English. Once accommodated no further effort from Quebec people is required. One way street. QC politicians go to English hospitals & schools setting the opposite example. Quebec people go to Maine & speak French to the cashier in McDonald's. Why? Speaking Ukrainian in Poland makes much more sense.
@@hengessalicht4832 Yes, because that's the compromise. Learn French or Quebec leaves Canada.
