I've bought the K551 Vara a year ago after watching this video. It's definitely a great keyboard, especially for the price. The keyboard it replaced was the cheapest Razer keyboard available and I hated it. Took the K551 apart today, and found out, it's hot-swappable! I was a bit shocked at first since every hot-swappable PCBs I've seen online has a very different system, but yes...it's hot-swappable.

I actually recently got the version of this that doesn't light up. There is a slight defect in the 2 key. However, it still works and you don't notice it usually so that is honestly a minor complaint. I love it. I honestly like it just as much as my $100 Razer.
Eight-Six I might try reaching out to them. I just don’t want to end up with a keyboard that has an even worse problem. At least this problem I hardly ever notice.
I know you won't see this comment and it probably doesn't matter. But I got this keyboard today and I figured out what that weird static option with a few colors was. For me it's page down and function twice. And I think it's a typing intensity mode. The more you type the more the color changes. At least that's what I figured out. There is also a static mode for me it's function insert three times.
I've watched other reviews of this keyboard and I think to get a specific static color you go into cycle mode by pressing fn+ins. Then when it gets to the color you want press fn+ins again to stop and fn+ins to start again.

Are you still using the keyboard? I'm wondering to buy this keyboard but saw multiple reviews that it has a lot of double typing issue, is it true or is it common for every mechanical keyboard?
A reset usually fixes that. It happens to my Corsair kb sometimes too. I have encountered that ‘double tap’ trouble on multiple brands. KBs with user programmability encounter this issues from time to time.
Does Redragon comes with a software to reset it? Idk its my first redragon product and im really worried to buy it after reading those reviews and there's no redragon service center in my city cause its not that popular.
Hasiv Don’t get something that you are worried about 😊. Usually unplug and cntrl and shift held down while replugging, some are letters or othe symbols. Hey brother, to avoid the light flicker use shutter speeds of 1/50 or 1/100. Blue switches just sound the worse, hate them so much :(((( Ruined this keyboard :(
All I know is it’s common practice to rename a model for different markets. The Ford F-150 truck in America for example is renamed the Ford Lobo (Wolf) in countries like Mexico. But why this keyboard specifically is renamed, 🤷♂️
If it is an Outemu variant you likely have some spare switches with it and the answer is yes. If you are able to pull the switch (be firm with a switch (not a cap) puller) but don't try too hard in case you have a soldered variant). If its unsoldered Otemu switches they are 2 pronged and replaceable with other 2 pronged Outemu switches. (Some are not hot swappable, some are, hard to know until you try).
@@EightSixMatt Nope, unlike new Redragon mechanical Keyboard, my model was like back in 2017 I think, that time they don't provide the 4 free switches included with your purchase.Hmm, I am still waiting for my switch puller to arrive. No worry, maybe I will just open it up (if can) and check if they are soldered with the PCB. Lucky you guys now got the Redragon model with Hotswapable straight out of box.
I dunno if any one else suffers from this problem but when ever I see keyboards or pc parts I like and I check it out on Amazon it's either out of stock or they don't ship it to my country (ireland)
Is there big difference between this and one in COOLER MASTER MasterKeys Lite L Combo since this one is a real mechanical keyboard? i Can't decide between these 2.
I have not used the MasterKeys Lite. I have used plenty of 'like-mechanical' memchanical boards though. To me, as someone who likes mechanical, they just don't do the trick. It really comes down to you and what you like, or want. I would not pick memchanical over mechanical personally (but thats me :) )
is it really outemu blue switch and hot swappable? i saw some reviews on youtube saying that it is a "key switch from redragon" that is similar to cherry mx blue.
So how some of this has changed: Outemu, TTC, Zorro Kailh - they all used to be easy to ID with their manufacturer branding. Razer somewhat set the trend/change here - When Razer made "Razer Green Switches" they were slightly modified Kailh (red switches I thin, I can't remember) - anyways they talked the factory in to letting them brand them as Razer switches (and Kailh kept a small hard to see logo on them). Much the same here (but modifications don't usually happen, just a company that wants to have their name on all things). They want to market their own 'special Redragon Switches' - but it's really just that 'marketing' often a company pays for the right to change this and it creates the whole 'They made special switches just for me/my style!' feeling. Redragon does not own a factory that produces switches. Almost no company does with the exception of Logitech (and even they don't always use their own switches). Another different example is PSU units - there are only so many UL listed factory manufacturers - Companies like corsair find one they like from a reputable company - and they put their own logo on it. Is this wrong? No - Corsair (as an example) typically knows what people want - they can request slight modifications - and choose well (usually) for their consumers, but they are not the OEM of PSU's Corsair doesn't (to my knowledge) own a PSU production warehouse. Does this make sense?
I like all the simplistic straight forward designs personally. It'd be a toss up probably. EENY MEENY MINEY MOE. But thats me. I just pick, and go for it.
It does not come with a wrist rest. My current daily is the Corsair Strafe MX Silents. I originally got it to try the MX Silents and didn't intend on it becoming my daily, however it grew on me and I've decided I really like the MX Silents.
Does anyone know if these rather clicky mechanical keyboards pick up on a headset? I personally like keyboards when they are clicky like that but I just don’t want to annoy any friends
I just got one of these keyboards myself but the one from amazon Redragon K551 Mechanical Gaming Keyboard RGB LED Rainbow Backlit Wired Keyboard with Red Switches for Windows Gaming PC (104 Keys, Black) after plugging it in i noticed that i didn't have single color selections. I turned my keyboard over and i see VARA K551-kr. also the switches are red. All i want really is the ability to choose single color for the entire keyboard. This is the one i got from amazon. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016M91SS0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It may also have to do with my computer being new its a skytech that i found on amazon as well.
The one you were probably intending to get was geni.us/BskzG The one you got was the 7-color (even though there is really only 6). Each row is set to a specific pre-defined color.
I appreciate the info I'll send it back and get the one that you linked me. I should have read more into what i was getting instead of just buying it as i did. Thanks.
I'm not familiar with Tecware Phantom, however what I see when I search is a TKL vs a ten-key keyboard, and raised floating caps vs a wall around the keyboard chassis. I also see Tecware has browns (maybe it has others too but not sure) I like browns the most personally. What matters most to you? Browns are a good in the middle feel and sound, and if you don't use a ten-key I'd go with the phantom. It looks like a good price, has an amazon choice selection, and is probably pretty decent.
They have different names, often depending on the region. there may also be subtle differences I am aware of but for the most part the 551 model is whats important (if anyone else has light to shed on it go for it!)
SkrewDesign sure looks like it (not sure this is news to me) I would guess either mitra is regional to another market, and based on one article possibly has non-soldered swappable switches? But I am not sure 🤔
It kind of does, but it's not listed for the VARA, it's listed for the MITRA: www.redragonzone.com/pages/download I have the keyboard reviewed in this video, and I use the software for what that site calls the K551-RGB MITRA. It's basic and not in great english, but it still works.
Just depends on what you are looking for :) If you want TKL (ten-key-less) then 552, if you're like me and like having that 10 Key/num pad than the 551. Hope that helps
It's pretty much the same, just TKL, if you like the 10-key see if they have the KALA K557 in your country. That ones pretty awesome too and around the same price (at least here)
i just bought it, but there is a problem with the fn key and the color modes i can get the media application, volume up and down with the fn key, but the color modes cant seem to work.

What is your keyboard in the background?
At the time of this video that was the Corsair Strafe with MX Silents
does anyone know if there are any replacement key caps without the tacky "gamer" font that work with this keyboard?
full 10-key cross stem key-caps should work.
Something like this: amzn.to/2twHwjf
I would not pick memchanical over mechanical personally (but thats me :) )
Thanks so much for answer man! I will definitely go for real mechanical. Great videos and you got new subscriber ! :D
is it really outemu blue switch and hot swappable? i saw some reviews on youtube saying that it is a "key switch from redragon" that is similar to cherry mx blue.
I have a maximum budget if 60 for a keyboard should i get the k556 or this one
I like all the simplistic straight forward designs personally. It'd be a toss up probably. EENY MEENY MINEY MOE. But thats me. I just pick, and go for it.
is vara k551 and mitra k551 same ?
Could someone please give me the software for the keyboard?
Umm when I go to the redragon website it doesn’t show the download for the k551 VARA only the k551 MITRA. Please help!!!!
I've been told it's the same keyboard different name. Did the driver work for it? (Some of the names change depending on region I think).
Eight-Six the software says “Device is not detected, the key settings can’t be displayed” or something like that
@@rizzy6087 i have the same problem, did you find a fix
Dominator nope no fix
@@rizzy6087 same problem.
Did you find the fix for it?
Does it come with a wrist pad? Also, what's the keyboard on your desk?
It does not come with a wrist rest. My current daily is the Corsair Strafe MX Silents. I originally got it to try the MX Silents and didn't intend on it becoming my daily, however it grew on me and I've decided I really like the MX Silents.

is it possible to change the keyswitches to red or brown? cherry?
Maybe if you have some experience with soldering and desoldering
Can I use it for agressive gaming?
And what about the life span?
"Aggressive gaming" lmao
hi sir what is better in lighting kala or vara thank you
Does anyone know if these rather clicky mechanical keyboards pick up on a headset? I personally like keyboards when they are clicky like that but I just don’t want to annoy any friends
Yes, blue switches have a way of making themselves heard over open mics pretty easily =\ set up that PTT button! :D
Does it have like a explosion effect so when you click on a button it like receshades across the whole keyboard
iToxic Casual ‘ripple effect’ and yes it has that 😊
how do i stop the color wheel to make it stay on purple?
is it too late to buy this right now in 2020?
does it have software for like the lights?
Does this keyboard work for Xbox and if so do you need an adapter
You missed a lot of lighting modes. There's another command for static colors. Making it two keys
Nice! 😃
The one you were probably intending to get was geni.us/BskzG
The one you got was the 7-color (even though there is really only 6). Each row is set to a specific pre-defined color.
I appreciate the info I'll send it back and get the one that you linked me. I should have read more into what i was getting instead of just buying it as i did. Thanks.
@@namelessdryke3214 Easy mistake to make (i've made it before)
What does it compare to the k552?
Does this keyboard have blue switches?
Do you know how to make it a static cyan colour?
Nice
which one should i buy redragon vara or tecware phantom rgb?
I'm not familiar with Tecware Phantom, however what I see when I search is a TKL vs a ten-key keyboard, and raised floating caps vs a wall around the keyboard chassis. I also see Tecware has browns (maybe it has others too but not sure) I like browns the most personally.
What matters most to you? Browns are a good in the middle feel and sound, and if you don't use a ten-key I'd go with the phantom. It looks like a good price, has an amazon choice selection, and is probably pretty decent.
ok sir tnx for the reply
No problem! Wish I had a solid answer for you but I don't :(
Isnt this redragon k551 mitra?
They have different names, often depending on the region. there may also be subtle differences I am aware of but for the most part the 551 model is whats important (if anyone else has light to shed on it go for it!)
Can you change the color of the Ripple effect
Tess Andoy ya
is this switch need to desolder?
Is the base where the switches seats metal?
vara and mitra it's the same keyboard? they changed the name?
SkrewDesign sure looks like it (not sure this is news to me)
I would guess either mitra is regional to another market, and based on one article possibly has non-soldered swappable switches? But I am not sure 🤔
I’m remember when I bought this keyboard and mouse bundle for 54$ and my parents found out how much it cost they were so disappointed 😂😂😂
my parents were disappointed about the price but then they understood that this keyboard was worth it.
If i connect this to my ps4, would the rgb still work?
eyup
@@KelvinMercer thanks
How do I get it to stay on one colour? Please help me
Please describe what you see on your keyboard.
does this keyboard have a software for rgb effects?
Șogard not that I could find anywhere.
The RGB lighting is customisable, on the keyboard, there is no need of software
-King Regards
It kind of does, but it's not listed for the VARA, it's listed for the MITRA: www.redragonzone.com/pages/download
I have the keyboard reviewed in this video, and I use the software for what that site calls the K551-RGB MITRA. It's basic and not in great english, but it still works.
Does this have a software? Can someone send me the link please
What’s better k551 or k552?
Just depends on what you are looking for :) If you want TKL (ten-key-less) then 552, if you're like me and like having that 10 Key/num pad than the 551. Hope that helps
is it the same other than the num pad?
im asking because the K551 isn't sold in the Netherlands where i live, or shipped for double the price :/
It's pretty much the same, just TKL, if you like the 10-key see if they have the KALA K557 in your country. That ones pretty awesome too and around the same price (at least here)
i just bought it, but there is a problem with the fn key and the color modes i can get the media application, volume up and down with the fn key, but the color modes cant seem to work.
www.redragonzone.com/pages/download here find the MITRA K551RGB and dowload the software (english or spanish)
Keyboard sound is on 3:45
Its good right?
I don't think I have ever been displeased with Redragon - maybe wishing for more on some of their stuff, but never let down by what they offer...that being said in my opinion it is good!
did this man get his wife to type for the sound test because of her hands? I'm dying rn
Paddy Griffin nah I wear pretty rings
I am getting this keyboard does it work for ps4

@@EightSixMatt Thank you so much
I have the exact same keyboard but they call it a Mitra lol... What the fuck is going on with Redragon... They don't even remember what model numbers and names they've already used? Mine is supposedly a K551-RGB Mitra.
