During the pandemic, it's been difficult to get out and test drive or shop for, well, pretty much everything. But when you're dropping as much money on a piece of equipment as a gaming laptop, you want to be sure you're getting what you paid for. I went back and forth between these two and ultimately went with the Area-51, basically this exact setup, too. The RTX 3000 GPUs just came out, but I opted for the 2070 Super for the upgrade-ability of the Area-51 and for the bigger storage potential, since I game and also work with a lot of big graphic and 3D files. I bought it yesterday...it didn't actually occur to me to watch any review videos before hand--somehow, I forgot they existed. But, while I wait for the mother-ship to arrive, so to speak, your review did inform me in that I made the right choice. It also clued me into the fact that *both* power bricks need to be used in tandem. That's not terribly clear in their sales pitch and documentation...so I'm definitely going to need a bigger bag. Preferably with wheels. You might even say a suitcase. Anyway, thank so much for this review! Very helpful. Cheers!
@@MashITTech I've just ordered the a51. I'm really looking for a desktop replacement (full transparency, I'll use it at least as much for home office productivity work as I will for heavy duty gaming) and mobility isn't as much of a consideration as being able to use it for long stints comfortably. I think it will be a great daily use machine for us homebound office slogs. Price is heavy but working out the actual cost per hour of use over it's likely lifespan and its upgradeability, I think it actually brings pretty good value. BTW, I was also amused by the comment about "if you're looking for mobility you want the m17..." LOL (really) - I got the context that you meant, but it was pretty funny considering the size of the two beasts we're all looking at. Cheers!
Haha yes, that was just in the context of those two laptops but I know what you mean 😂 you have made a good choice, and I would always choose the 51m over a more portable machine, not only do you get a desktop cpu but being that bit larger it runs much cooler and quieter which is really important to me 👍
Just bought an area 51m R2 (really is not even one hour ago) and I was kind of worried you would say the R3 is better but I'm glad you confirmed my theory. I spent literally hundreds of hours trying to pick the best among all what's on the market these days....Now I just have to wait that it will ship....and I'm not that good at waiting.... Thanks for your fantastic review.
Wow congratulations, what spec did you order? I have been thoroughly impressed with the unit we received and I am tempted not to let them have it back :) I loved the r2 and bought one for myself and really regretted selling it and this model is much better. And I am with you with not being good at waiting! you should see the state of my f5 key from all the refreshes
Great review! I was deciding between this and the M17 R4 and finally went with the R4. The deciding factor was the 3080 that comes in the R4, I couldn't pass that up.
You should also compare it to the r1 with the original bios and increased tdp it's actually faster than the r2 with a super. It run slighter warmer but a good cooling pad helps. I'm still rockin mine over 2 years later.
Very helpful and clearly explained video. Thank you! One question though. Which one to choose among them: 1) M17: i7 10875H 8-Core, RTX 2080 Super Max-P 2) AREA 51 : i7 10700 8-Core, RTX 2070 Super Max-P purpose : play games Thanks
That’s a really tough one! M17 would probably perform better in most games unless they are really cpu heavy so is probably the more sensible option. The 51m is a lot better on the cpu front so will help cpu heavy games and is also quieter and cooler.
Thanks man! So if I take the starting variant of area-51( i7 10700 8-Core) and customize it choosing RTX-2080 Super as GPU, then will it be worth it ? The standard variants of area-51 with RTX 2080 super GPU have higher CPUs. So is this configuration good ? (i7 10700 8-Core and RTX-2080 super)
That would be my personal choice! The 10700 is an amazing cpu and the 10900 upgrade runs a lot hotter and louder so isn’t worth the small benefit it provides
Great video I've had a lot of fun watching it. I recently received my Area 51m r2 and I LOVE this machine! I can run Kingdom Come at ultra settings at 110 fps. It's crazy fast loading times now (couple of seconds) as before it took forever to load the maps (many minutes) with my older computer. Now I'm always afraid to drop my bag or lose it somewhere with my laptop in it...
@@MashITTech Intel core i9 10900k (10 core, 20 mb cache, 3.7 to 5.3 ghz), RTX 2080 Super 8GB GDDR6, 32 gig/2933 Mhz of RAM. I wanted to change to the 3200 Mhz but it was not part of the promotion. I bought it on black friday. Oh, and I also added a 1tb hard drive (+ the standard 512gb SSD). The screen is the standard one at 144 Hz. I thought about buying the 4k screen, but then I rethinked (is that a word? My english is average haha) my options and the price kept on going up... One day I'll simply buy a 4k tv and I'll simply plug my portable to it.
Wow what a beast. I think you made a good call on the 144hz screen, it is still a lovely screen and better for gaming. 4K is great for work but only 60hz atm
Mash IT I got I9 10900K, with a 2080Super 32G ram and 1080P 300 hz screen. I was going to get the ROG Scar 17 originally but I figured I could really use that upgradability on the ailenware laptops. It’s a bummer ailenware doesn’t have ryzen options because I will be streaming but a 10900K is still more than enough for me. I’m way over budget on this purchase and my mom is kind enough to let me buy it. I’ve never experienced a high end system so this is gonna be exciting for me. I’m 13 after all
Wow, that’s quite a beast there! And yes, I wish they would look at a ryzen option but the 10900k is such a monster of a processor it should last you a good few years
@@MashITTech Yup I agree, I received the laptop yesterday and it was the fastest machine I’ve ever experienced. The 10900K is rly a beast. Cant wait to put a 30 series card in there
Great video. Bought m15 R3 around Nov 2020. Received one with speaker and keyboard issues so ended up replacing it, only this time GPU got fried mid jan 2021 - so sent it out for return. Ordered Area51m R2. Lets see.
What spec 51m did you order? I loved my time with the area 51m, it was my favourite gaming laptop from 2020. I was gutted to have to give it back to Dell (Now I am just waiting for the new refresh so I can get them to send me another)
@@MashITTech not yet, reward points are still pending from my M17 purchase so I'm waiting to see if they arrive before the 6th (when my discount expires)
@@fabioalvarez916 I don't know, as this is my first Alienware purchase. I have not heard of any Christmas sales but maybe boxing day or new year's sales. I would look/ ask on Reddit r/Alienware to see if they know more. If you need to take the laptop anywhere on a daily basis, I think the M17 would be better. The a51 is a lot heavier, has a lot lower battery life and is less portable due to its huge design. However, if you're just moving it around your house, and you can keep it plugged most/ all of the time, I would go for the a51.
I returned my m17 and bought the 51m because the fans drove me crazy on the m17. The high pitch vacuum cleaner tone is terrible. I love my 51m and im very happy with it, only problem i have is coil whine when the fans are off and in a silent room.
Professional Comparison! Personally I was completely unaware that Optimus mode was a thing, battery life was my one gripe with my laptop and that immensely helped! This video really reinforced my choice of going with the M17 R3. Performs great, lightweight, portable and practical! Great Video!
The area 51m r2 is a stronger machine so would be the best but obviously you are sacrificing portability! I loved the 51m r2 so much I bought a 2080 super model for myself
Thank you for your comparison- as always I’ve really enjoyed watching- they are sooo helpful. Could you plz make a comparison between your new m17r4 and the Area 51m? Do you habe an Area51m with a 2080 super available for comparison? I‘ve ordered the m17r4 and I‘m worried about the fan noise being a deal breaker for me so I‘m looking for a alternative...
If it’s ok, I am waiting for the area 51m r3. Then I will do a comparison. What I am working on though is a performance and tweaking video so you can tune your alienware to your liking (either low noise or high performance) as I have already managed to reduce the noise on my unit with a bit of tweaking
Reliability is up for grabs. Gaming, Performance, and fast experience wise, hands down the alienware area 51m. Keep in mind that you could spend less on an actual pc for the same specs. What you’re paying for in the area 51m is not just pc performance, but also laptop portability and more or less an experimental product from alienware. If you’re constantly on the go, yet require high pc performance, that is the only way I can justify the area 51m. The term “portability” should be used very loosely for the area 51m since it is only more portable than an actual pc; this would probably be one of the heaviest mobile device you’ll lug around.
Totally agree with Danks comment. The area 51m almost shouldn't be called a laptop as you will probably never use it on your lap. But if you want a portable desktop with a 17" screen built in, then that is more what this product is. I often go to friends for a gaming evening and this is still easy to chuck in a bag and set up on arrival, doing the same with even a tiny ITX machine is not even remotely the same league.
Just remember you will not be able to upgrade your processor nor your video card in the future.. Dell lied to the the first generation users because we were unable to upgrade either one in the first generation batch.... They changed the motherboards and then told us the 2070 and 2080 super cards were incompatible as well.. We can still upgrade our video card to the regular 2080 for $1400 dollar's .....yeah let me get right on that...NOT... So configure high when you buy.. When I purchased my M51 first generation I topped off the processor and got the 2070 video card.. Love the laptop but remember Dell will mislead you on the upgrade path..
I think we couldn’t upgrade to the newer generation of cpus because intel changed their sockets, but I agree with you on how Dell would not let people upgrade to the newer gpus
Hi.... I have a Alienware m17 R3, Is there any indication (led in the alien head like 15 R4) to show that the battery is charging or is completely charged when the system is shutdown?? Regards
So the difference in Alienware 51gpu and an m17 r3 is just the amount of colts the card can take? I’m new to this and thought the 51 m came with desktop gpu and cpu
Ok, the difference are: Area-51m has desktop cpu, upgradable ram, WiFi card, cpu and gpu. Much better cooling. Unfortunately the gpu although on an upgradable card is actually not a desktop card. The 2070 super has the same 115w power limit as the m17 which is really disappointing. The 2080 has a higher wattage limit though, no idea why they gimped the 2070
I really love I found a youtuber like you to compare these two laptops, because I want to buy one of these laptops. I still cant decide which one to get. I really like the area 51m r2 but its much more expensive.
Hi Victor, ok, if you need battery life or portability get a m17r3 or r4. for anything else get the area 51m r2. I go through a lot of laptops for reviews and I bought the area 51m r2 for myself I loved it that much. Yes it is bulky, has two power packs and virtually no battery life but as I always use on a desk and don't care about battery I love having the power of a desktop in a laptop form that is actually pretty quiet! I have the 2080 super now and that runs at 200w which is incredible. Look out for some deals as in the UK they had some incredible deals on the r2 lately
I really love the x1 extreme and p1 series. I wanted to do a x1 extreme gen3 review but unfortunately Lenovo aren’t selling the gen 3 in the U.K. at the moment :( hoping maybe a gen 4 refresh with 16:10 screen soon! Got a x1 nano coming in this week though for some thinpad goodness
Nice review! I just bought the Area 51 with the core I9K with the 2070 super. Is this still powerful? I play games like League, Final Fantasy and I do stream on twitch . Will that be enough? Oh and do you have any recommendations for lab top bags or lab top cooling pads? Keep up the good review!
Thank you mate. The laptop is still a beast and in all honesty the 3000 series mobile do not seem that much better than the 2000 so far and yours is still a beast of a laptop. It will easily handle all your games you listed plus all modern AAA titles at 1080p high fps. With regards to the bag, it is quite a large laptop so will not first in a lot of 17" laptop bags, get an 18" bag or the 17" Alienware vindicator bag. I will try and reply back with a couple of amazon links later to point you in the right direction 👍
@@MashITTech awesome thank you for the insight! I was stressing cause I thought the 2070 super was a bad choice but I’m glad it was alright in the end! Also does this lab top support another monitor? I’ve been meaning to get an external one don’t know how I would connect it.
Nice video, but i think will skip the Area M51. It's not the most portable package. You were talking about the 330W power adapter in the video. Does Dell still sell those separate? I don't seem to find them... :(
How is the cooling in 51m r2 laptop? Some people say it's very bad and u get over 100 degrees so u can't live with stock thermals, u need to change the thermal paste n pad?
In my model the cooling was amazing. I guess a lot of it is based on what config you opt for. If you get the i9 10900k plus 2080 super it draws a lot more watts and I think this is where cooling issues creep in

I bought an Alienware Area 51m recently. While I rate its performance, I am wary of its thermals: the smaller power brick gets incredibly hot and the keyboard very warm. It also has significant screen bleed. I'm wondering whether Alienware have managed to get the system running cooler with this r2 version? Those vents near the function keys should help a little.
Awesome review! I'd go for the area 51 because portability is a lesser concern, as long as I can comfortably take it from one room to another in the house. So for me everything about the area 51 is better except for the trackpad (yuck synaptics).
@@MashITTech Yeah for gaming I'd always use a separate mouse on pretty much any laptop (even ones with a good precision), but for other stuff I really like doing 90% of mouse stuff with taps and gestures. Really hard to go back to this old style with separate click buttons!
Ordered the 51m r2 with 32g RAM, 2080 Super and i910900k. Can you comment on the thermals? Thinking of getting a Klem cool + but dont know if itll fit on the vents due to the heigh of the base. Thanks.
How is the fan noise one area 51? I'm very close to buying ones, im just a little hesitant since I've been using the razer blade pro 4k (2017) which sounds like a jet engine when its just on the menu haha
The fan noise on my model (2070 super and 10700) was great. Because the machine has been designed to run 2080 super and 10900k it doesn’t have to work hard to cool a mid spec model so was incredibly quiet!
It’s worth it! I love my area 51m and I get a lot of laptops into the office but none have tempted me to switch yet! There are some good deals on these from dell at the moment
You only mention the cost (between the two laptops) at 20:10 specifically one's more expensive than the other. I would think that price would be a big factor in deciding what to buy.
Yes but the difficulty is that they vary so drastically once you start playing around with the configuration page that it’s difficult to properly compare the prices except the area51m is usually a little more expensive than the m17 if you try and match the specs where possible
Definitely, it has great performance, decent screen, speakers and keyboard and still mobile, it’s a good all round machine. The only area that suffers is battery life but most gaming laptops are in the same boat
The 51m2 dominates in cpu but the r4 is a lot better on gpu! If you only game the r4 might be the better choice. The fan noise is a lot nicer on the area51 though
Got question in regards to which one I would get if I wanted a laptop that would last forever and also be portable to places such as university. There’s currently a sale making them the same price so I can’t chose. They both would be max spec for same price
For portability it has to be the m17 r3/r4 as it is much more compact, lighter and only needs one charger. That said I personally own the area 51m r2 as I don't care about portability or weight and enjoy the quieter fans, better cooling and speakers.
I am looking at the buying one of these but can't make up my mind if I go with the m17 r4 with the RTX 3080 WHERE with the m51 I would be stuck on a 2070 super. Is there a big difference between the cards?
yes, quite a lot of difference. the 3080 is a 165w card and the 2070 super is 115w plus the 3080 has a lot more GPU cores and better RTX performance. Obviously the 51m r2 will have better cpu performance and run quieter
thx for the video, it helps me a lot! I am a huge alienware fan. I have an 10 years old aurora ALX and a Alienware 15 R2 notebook (2016). Now it is time to change to a new alienware system and i chose the alienware 51m r2 with RTX2080 super, Intel9 (10th generation), UHD Screen, 64 GB Ram and 4TB SSD, lunar light. There are days where you have to reward yourself :-) I am so excited!!! :-)
hmm, I only have a 17m R2 laptop(2011). I need to the alienware 51m R* with RTX, i9, U/Q, 64GB and 4TB SDD, Black body. Surely, I think QHD with 1m/s is really true.
Thanks for the review. Helped me make a decision on which to buy. Just bought the m51. Tip for anyone reading this comment - I searched for discount codes online and managed to get over £200 off just for punching in a code at checkout. Well worth a shout.
Nice one Mike, I do try sand post on here when I see a decent discount code! I think you made the right choice, the area 51m r2 is my personal laptop :)
Because dell just don’t seem to care about the area 51m and haven’t updated it or even reduced it. It’s a real shame as I love the 51m but it needs a gpu upgrade. If gpu is your priority then the 17r4 is the better option.
Ok, I love having a desktop cpu as I am quite a heavy user. I love that the machine runs really quietly (as the fans are huge due to the machine thickness). I also like the fact I can upgrade the ram, cpu and potentially the gpu (even if I can’t add a 3000 series it is nice that I could replace it if it failed) I also like that it has 2x m.2 plus a 2.5” hdd slot. What I dislike is finding a bag that fits it and having 2 power supplies. Hope this helps 👍
I just got the m17 R3 last month and now I'm seeing this video and comments on Reddit on 51m R2 cooling. How much cooler does the 51m R2 run compared, when playing both CPU and GPU intensive games?
Hey good video I just have a question because I am soon about to buy it I just want to know is there a new laptop coming this year because I want to buy the newest one to be used. Is there a new one coming soon or anything ?
Hi sorry to ask you this stupid question. i wanted to have a station with 4 monitor station and thinking about having a high-end laptop than a PC. so is it possible to attach 4 (or possibly 6)monitors on to any of these laptops?
Hi, that’s not a stupid question at all! I think your best option would be a thunderbolt dock, but even this may only allow two or three extra monitors so you may also have to plug a couple into the laptops display ports too
@@MashITTech Hey there. I decided to buy Alienware Area-51m R2 Gaming Laptop because they're all discounted by $900. With that being said, mine still hasn't even been put in production and probably won't be here until February. I am a huge gamer and I love great quality, but I didn't realize they were coming out with new ones this month. Should I just cancel my order and get the new one, or based on your expertise do you think the difference will not be too great to where I should cancel the order and get the new laptops they're coming out with?
Yeah i need it to be beefy! As i will repaste mine with liquid metal conductonaut like i did with r4! Ultimate cooling!got the 300hz! GREAT REVIEWS BTW!
Thank you mate, only been doing this for a few months but feel like we are getting the hang of it. And yes, monster specs. that 300hz is going to be amazing
Bought one with 360hz screen, came with a dead group of pixels. Sending back and just bought a new one today with 4k screen. No one would noticed the difference gaming between a 60hz or a 360hz. The 4k screens are just amazing and are so much more crisp and bright.
Big difference between 60hz and 360hz lol. Not such a big difference if you're going from 144hz to 360hz though. The problem with 4k is laptop gpus aren't powerful enough to game in 4k. I prefer high frames and high refresh rates.
@@justswitched8841 Yes there is a huge difference, but you won't notice it playing on that laptop screen is what I was saying. Playing on a high refresh rate external monitor? Oh Yea, you'll notice then. Gaming on a laptop screen is not that fun.
Im really wanting an area 51m r2. My previous alienware is 6 years old. Is it quicker than the ps5 & do you know anything about the replacement cycle on area 51m as i love dedicated trackpad buttons too. Its just 2 power adapters is annoying.
replacement cycle? sorry I didn't understand that. If you get the config in my review you can easily just use the 330w and you still get full gpu performance and loose about 5% of the 10700 performance (which is still more than you will ever need in games!)
I just posted in the side by side video of the 15 and the 17. I love the 17 I just received, but I am seriously thinking of returning it for the Area 51M. The Area 51 that I can get right now would be lower spec in the graphics department. It has a 2060 and I have the 2070 in my M17 R3. However, I don't think there is a game out there that won't run on high settings with a 2060 right now. In the future I could upgrade it. The sticking point for me is the non upgradeable ram. I did however, get a GREAT deal on this M17 in one of their sales. So I am torn. I would be returning a superior spec machine and paying more for one with less superior specs. I see it as a long term investment, but not sure what to do at this point.
If you got a great deal it might be worth keeping hold of it. As I said in your other post 16gb is still the sweet spot for gaming so I wouldn’t upgrade for that reason. The Area 51m is a lot bigger and heavier with 2 power packs, I love it but it’s not for everyone. And you are right on the 2060. I did a video comparing the 2 and the 2060 gave really good FPS at 1080p (it helps that alienware use the 115w 2060)
Just build a desktop and keep your m17. I had the a51m r1. It’s not worth it. I sold mine. Plus you can’t really upgrade like dell said you could. You cant install new processor or latest gpu. Plus u need 2 power bricks on the a51m.
For the Area 51M R2, the 2070 super is 115 watts. What about the 2080 super? If the wattage is more, how much performance increase should I expect? Is it also the same for the last generation R1 between the 2070 and 2080? Thank you!
Well I am biased as I own the 51m r2 😂 but it is a great laptop and I am assuming you got a good discount on it as it has been discontinued? The X17 looks nice but I am still waiting for mine to arrive to test it so I cannot give you any info on it yet 😭
yeah, that is a tough one. Some mobile 3000 series results have started appearing but I expect it will be at least Q2 2021 before we see an Area 51m with 3000 card
Hello man, great video and very helpful. I have one question: I just ordered a maxed out area 51m, and I have one question: Will it be able to run every videogame on the market? Is there anything it wont be able to run? Also, this maxed out version I ordered has a 60hz qhd display, is it really that bad compared to the 144 1080p? (2080 super, i9 10th gen, 64 gb ram)
Congratulations! I bet you can't wait. The image quality on the ghd will be a lot better than the 1080p it just won't be as smooth! Also you can easily add a 1080p 144/240hz external monitor for home gaming if you want the high fps
Hi!!! Thank you so much for your video. By any chance your track pad is loose at the bottom? I just bought one m15 r3 and the trackpad at the bottom looks like it is not well fitted... Did you have this problem?
Hi Miguel, as stated in our email correspondence we have not seen this issue. Has anybody else received a faulty trackpad on an m15 or m17? I will be looking at the trackpad construction later to see if this is the same fault as the xps 9500
Hey .. My CPU score for time spy is coming out to be 9520 on balanced profile versus 11000 of yours ... did you overclock your CPU for that score ... Also strangely my GPU score is 9234 vs 8615 of yours....
The m17 is a LOT louder with the configs I compared. I will take a reading when in the office tomorrow. Also the area 51m is just a pleasant whoosh of air but the thinner fans on m17 make a higher pitched noise
@@MashITTech thats the problem, I bought the m17 and played with Fortnite and Dota2. The machine sounds like it gonna explode soon. So I upgraded to the 51m, gonna wait for another 3-4 weeks for it. (Aupost is hopeless in Australia mate)
I am planning to buy the area 51m r2 4k model. the refresh rate is really low 60Hz. will it be suitable for video editing if i am considering the 2080 nvidia graphics?
It will definitely be suitable for video editing! It is basically a desktop machine (albeit with slightly slower graphics cards). The 2070 or 2080 would both be perfect for video editing
@@MashITTech the zoom in made it better to distinguish the ports but initially all i saw the silver ethernet port on the AW 51r2 but im just nit picking i already ordered mine for cyberpunk 2077 with the 2080 super and i cant wait any longer for the game and the laptop im dying :D awesome review otherwise.

The more compact M15 and M17 fans when playing a game to keep the temps under 90 C sound like a drone taking off. Especially the R2 versions which should be recalled. I could cook an egg on the laptop. They can barely keep the laptop cool enough from catching fire when playing a CPU/GPU intensive game. I had to use throttlestop and run the CPU at 70% to keep the temps down to a playable level. Hopefully the R3 versions are much better in cooling. They are VERY LOUD and annoying to anyone else in the room. I'm going to the 51m for this reason alone.
They definitely fixed the temps in r3, they have a vapour chamber which works really well. It is still noisy though. This is also why I prefer the area 51m

Again, perhaps a silly question considering the other far more important specs, but these minor aesthetic looks and colour-contrast ratios do matter heavily to me. - Thanks. 👍
Thank you for the kind words, and no that is not a silly question at all. Which screen are you considering? I have tested the 144hz 1080p and the 360hz 1080p and both are matte screens. I loved the area 51m r2 so much that I bought one for myself although on my model I got the 2080 super. Any more questions please do not hesitate to ask 👍👍
@@MashITTech Hey man thanks for the quick reply! (Apologies for my late one). • EXCELLENT! Glad to hear that BOTH are matte screens. They are my prefered screen type, as all of my other laptops have matte, anti-glare coating. I personally do not mind the reduction in NTSC colour gamut, (45 - 60%?). (I know this is tedious, the exact positions of the colour apexes depends on the emission spectra of the phosphor in the computer monitor but still 🤔)... (...) For me personally, I went for the 360hz, 1080p screen to optimise the potential for triple 'A' title gaming, requiring high refresh rates. I also got the 2080 super. Q: I would have wanted a QHD native screen resolution, (is this an available upgrade for the Area-51m r2)? If so, could you estimate a median cost for the upgrade, (if indeed this is possible). If QHD is available, could I hypothetically order a 4k screen as well)? • Again, brilliant work my friend. You have a devoted Subscriber in me. Sorry if my questions seem tedious. I have not yet even looked at the Dell retail site yet... Will do so now. 👍👍
Hello! Thank you for this video, it really helped me. I've decided that I want one of these two, but my problem is I'm still deciding which would be worth it for the sims. I plan on all of the expansion packs, mods, and CC and I would like the laptop I get to still be great for the sims 5 (if it ever gets released). I'm also hoping to branch out to other games as well. If you could give me any insight I would be forever grateful.
@@FloraNovax3 I actually have! I splurged after I got my tax returns back and actually bought an alienware area 51m. It was very pricey, but so far I have all sims 3 + mods and CC, almost all sims 4 + mods and CC, sims medieval, and a few other PC games and it isn't even batting an eye. Runs everything on full specs without slowing even slightly. Doesn't even overheat, which is something that I found hard to find for the sims. She's a beauty!
The alienware area 51m SHOULD be charged while in use if possible. Even though it looks like a laptop, it functions like a desktop replacement. You won’t get much hours out of it away from the plug. The RTX 2070 super in the area 51 m can be replaced with a RTX 2080 super. There is a possibility that it can fit even more high end graphics card if the producers of said graphics card makes them compatible with the area 51m. As for the m17, it is closer to a laptop, but can still be plugged in while in use. The graphics card and most major components of the m17 is soldered into the computer which means they cannot be replaced(easily).
@@dankmemer2774 I saw many batteries are broken because of charging while in use, that make me afraid. Me and my friend are using laptop, I always remove battery and use plug to keep power, but my friends, he does not. After 1 year, his battery is broken, thay means he has to bring the charger all the time. It is not cheap to replace the new battery for laptop
I’m very interested in purchasing the Area 51M , it’s actually in my shopping cart right now. But I just can’t seem to be able to hit the checkout button. I feel like the 3000 series gpus are just around the corner. Anyone know any info about this? I spoke with a dell rep and he said they have no idea. Hopefully they won’t discontinue I love beefy laptops
I hate to tell you but I feel they will not update this :( It is such a shame as the area 51m r2 is my personal laptop and I love it! if they made an R3 with 11th gen and 3000 series I would buy it in a heartbeat
PS I would have been interested in the area 51M as the sustained all core clocks are way higher than the R3 due to better thermals (and in fact it can game quietly if you lock the processor at a lower frequency and still have excellent performance), but I am heavy on trackpad use and I just can't stand that trackpad..Microsoft precision drivers are up to the level of apple trackpads now.. On my Aorus X5 V8 I have installed the precision driver hack for ELAN pads and it made all the difference, so I wonder if that can be done with the alienware synpatics pad....
I am actually talking about when/if they release the 52m r3 as I am sure they will keep it the same and just upgrade the gfx as the have the m15 and m17. If they don’t update the 51m soon then I will pick up a r2 as it was my favourite laptop I reviewed last year and was gutted having to send it back to dell 😭
Yes they did throttle a bit. Even the m17r2 throttled but now dell are using a vapour chamber (as seen in the internals) and it really makes a difference. The r3 runs the cpu and gpu flat out with no throttling
Happy to help but can you tell me what you plan to use the laptop for? Also are you getting the upgrades for a good price as I often ordered as little as I can then upgrade it myself
@@MashITTech Well, I'm an architect and I usually use it for graphics purposes.I play games but not much.Due to system failure, the company will give a new one, so I configure it again.
@@burhankaramustafaoglu5514 ok well only really you will know if you need 32 or 64gb? You need to see how much you are using currently. I would say 32gb is enough for most people unless you have huge projects. Storage is very very easy to add later so just get the most your budget allows but lastly definitely get the 300hz panel as it is a much better panel and you get tobii which although is useless for work does give you access to windows hello facial recognition 👍

Hello,I am new to this laptop and graphics card and all of that, I just sold my playstation and I am looking to buy my first ever gaming laptop. I am debating between these 2 I do not care for portability since I am going to have it connected to a monitor. I don't know if the area51m r2 base model with rtx 2070 super or the m17 r3 with the 2070 super is best for warzone at around 100 fps and also for online school. Please help
If you are not bothered about portability get the area 51m every time! It is the laptop I personally use and I get through a lot of gaming laptops. It is great because it runs so cool and quiet an never gets hot externally.
any truckers got tips? I will soon be an over the road trucker and I am trying to figure out what gaming laptop i need to get as my playstation days will be over since ill never be home
Fellow master trucker here and you could still hook up your playstation and tv in your truck assuming it's a sleeper cab and and your inverter can support the wattage. I think most trucks inverters are at least a thousand watts but the more power your laptop or playstation consume the faster it will drain your batteries and the more you will have to idle your truck. If your a company driver your not paying for the gas but many companies will turn on automatic shutdown if the truck idles more than 5 minutes. So any laptop should work in your truck as they are all under a thousand watts. Just dont try having the microwave and tv going at the same time. Since your over the road I bet you will have a higher wattage inverter and battery capacity as well. Companies are now starting to put solar and lithium on their trucks too.
I should also add that you could build a desktop in a micro desktop case and put the monitor on your TV swivel arm. This way you can get a full functioning desktop at a lower cost than buying a laptop. Good option if your going to be in your truck most of the time.
Love these side by side reviews. They are extremely helpful!
Thank you mate, I hoped they would be as you rarely get to see them side by side as most shops don't stock them
I am glad you mentioned that 1440is coming back, honestly that is why I haven't upgraded from my 17R5 because I don't want to give up that screen.
Yup, hold on a couple of months and you should start seeing them appear..The best thing is they will be IPS and 165hz!
Cheers!
Really helpful as this is exactly the decision I'm trying to make, thanks guys.
No problem, have you made a decision?
@@tobie9753depends on what cooling pad you use but generally the higher end cooling pads can do it.
Very helpful and clearly explained video. Thank you!
One question though. Which one to choose among them:
1) M17: i7 10875H 8-Core, RTX 2080 Super Max-P
2) AREA 51 : i7 10700 8-Core, RTX 2070 Super Max-P
purpose : play games
Thanks
@@MashITTech Thank you so much!
@Aaron&Hamoody yup but I didn’t go for Area 51. I bought M17 R4 with 3080.

Glad it was helpful!
Thank you. Which one would you recommend for gaming, reliability, performance, and the fast experience
Dank Memer Thank you. But the Area 51m has more fps and it is easier since it is built together.
Mash IT Yea. Especially the weight.

Ok, the difference are:
Area-51m has desktop cpu, upgradable ram, WiFi card, cpu and gpu.
Nice video, but i think will skip the Area M51. It's not the most portable package.
You were talking about the 330W power adapter in the video. Does Dell still sell those separate? I don't seem to find them... :(
Your best bet is probably eBay as you get a few resellers selling them for reasonable prices (depending on your country)
the 240 w brick with the 51 looks smaller than the 240w that i recieved with my m17
it should be the same as dell only had one size (now there is a new slim model though with the X series)

Great! Hope you enjoy it! I love mine
Good comparison
Thank you :)
It also has a vapour chamber this year which seems to help a lot. The keyboard doesn’t seem to get hot on my model.
@@MashITTech thanks for the info. I'm going to return mine and either get the r2 or an equivalent MSI Titan.
What CPU does yours have? I had an a51m and it never got hot.
Very nice review/comparison. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Awesome review! I'd go for the area 51 because portability is a lesser concern, as long as I can comfortably take it from one room to another in the house. So for me everything about the area 51 is better except for the trackpad (yuck synaptics).
Sounds exactly like my thinking! Agree on the touchpad but in all honesty I always have a mouse attached
Thanks.
I am doing a further video on thermals, power bricks and performance soon so hopefully this will help you
I've read in the past R2 Lunar White discolored (getting yellowish) under sweaty palms... Are R3 and R4 still affected?
Our old r2 discoloured too but we have not had the issue on the r3 & r4. Not heard anyone else complaint either
Great review 😎
Thank you
How is the fan noise one area 51? I'm very close to buying ones, im just a little hesitant since I've been using the razer blade pro 4k (2017) which sounds like a jet engine when its just on the menu haha
The fan noise on my model (2070 super and 10700) was great. Because the machine has been designed to run 2080 super and 10900k it doesn’t have to work hard to cool a mid spec model so was incredibly quiet!
I just got a job today gonna save up all summer for the A51
It’s worth it!
Would you recommend the M17 for the ocassional gamer? Looking for something powerful that can run a few VMs but once in a while play a game.
Definitely, it has great performance, decent screen, speakers and keyboard and still mobile, it’s a good all round machine. The only area that suffers is battery life but most gaming laptops are in the same boat
I wouldn't get the m17. The ram is soldered. If your running virtual machines you may need to upgraded later which you can't on the m17.
How does the area 51m r2 with a 2070 super and i7 10700 compare to the m15 r4 with an i7 10870 and 3070?
The 51m2 dominates in cpu but the r4 is a lot better on gpu! If you only game the r4 might be the better choice. The fan noise is a lot nicer on the area51 though
@@MashITTech Thank you for the help!
Can someone tell me how many yrs will these Laptop last around
4yrs or 6yrs or less ?
haha sounds like a beast! I hope you enjoy it :)
hmm, I only have a 17m R2 laptop(2011).
That was directly through Dell. They also do student discounts
Nice one Mike, I do try sand post on here when I see a decent discount code! I think you made the right choice, the area 51m r2 is my personal laptop :)
@@MashITTech First of your videos I’ve seen. Great review! Happy Easter. 🤘🏻

At 100% volume I am getting horrible cracking and popping from the left speaker, did your or anyone else encounter this?
No I certainly didn't! Might be worth popping support a quick message I am sure they will change the speaker for you
@@MashITTech Thanks for the feedback! I found many others with the same issue, so maybe I just got one of the bad ones.
plz answer me !!!
So, which one is better to do graphic task, battleground , design
and why is 2080 area51 more expensive than 3080 m17r4 ??
Because dell just don’t seem to care about the area 51m and haven’t updated it or even reduced it. It’s a real shame as I love the 51m but it needs a gpu upgrade. If gpu is your priority then the 17r4 is the better option.
@@MashITTech Which things makes you prefer m51 to m17r4?
design?
Ok, I love having a desktop cpu as I am quite a heavy user. I love that the machine runs really quietly (as the fans are huge due to the machine thickness). I also like the fact I can upgrade the ram, cpu and potentially the gpu (even if I can’t add a 3000 series it is nice that I could replace it if it failed) I also like that it has 2x m.2 plus a 2.5” hdd slot. What I dislike is finding a bag that fits it and having 2 power supplies.
Hope this helps 👍
Which would be better for MasterCam/Cam/Cad?
Thank you
51m r2 if you don't need portability or battery life
I just got the m17 R3 last month and now I'm seeing this video and comments on Reddit on 51m R2 cooling. How much cooler does the 51m R2 run compared, when playing both CPU and GPU intensive games?
It runs a fair bit cooler but also a LOT quieter, obviously it has a lot thicker fans
A lot cooler. A had an a51m. That thing never got hot. Temps were crazy considering it has desktop parts in a laptop.
can u put a ryzen chip in the 51m if so could u make. A vid on it
sorry it is impossible. The laptop can only accept Intel 10th gen chips
@@MashITTech ok thenx for answering though
Hey good video I just have a question because I am soon about to buy it I just want to know is there a new laptop coming this year because I want to buy the newest one to be used. Is there a new one coming soon or anything ?
Yes there will be. Wait a week for ces, I expect the 3000 series mobile nvidia cards will be announced plus new laptop models
Hi sorry to ask you this stupid question. i wanted to have a station
with 4 monitor station and thinking about having a high-end laptop than a
PC. so is it possible to attach 4 (or possibly 6)monitors on to any of
these laptops?
Hi, that’s not a stupid question at all! I think your best option would be a thunderbolt dock, but even this may only allow two or three extra monitors so you may also have to plug a couple into the laptops display ports too
i have a m17 my only complaint is that tobii is only available on 60hz lunar light and not 144hz dark side of the moon
Does it makes sense to buy now or will the 3080 + 11th gen intel cpu versions arrive soon?
I would wait until at least CES (11th of jan) to see if nvidia make an announcement
Is there a way to get the gpu upgrade from a rtx 2070 super to a 2080 super. Is there a market for it?
On which machine?
Ordered area 51m top spec i9 10900k , rtx2080 super, 32gb 3200mhz ram,lunar light!
Upgrading my alienware 17 r4 i7 7820hk ,gtx1080!💪💪💪
Wow, that will be quite the upgrade! At least you are moving from one tank to another so you will be used to the weight and size :)
Oh wow, I haven’t tried the 4K screen. Makes me want to get one in
@Alone Man 4k all the way.
@@MashITTech 👍
Just build a desktop and keep your m17. I had the a51m r1. It’s not worth it. I sold mine. Plus you can’t really upgrade like dell said you could. You cant install new processor or latest gpu. Plus u need 2 power bricks on the a51m.
For the Area 51M R2, the 2070 super is 115 watts. What about the 2080 super? If the wattage is more, how much performance increase should I expect? Is it also the same for the last generation R1 between the 2070 and 2080? Thank you!
The 2080 is allowed 150w so you will get a decent increase in performance over the 2070 super (I would estimate 30% better)
@@MashITTech Do you think it’s worth the £500+ price difference along with the i9 K processor?
No, if it’s just for gaming save the money. The only reason to get that cpu is if you will be using it for encoding
@@MashITTech Thank you! Keep making videos I find your channel really informative and entertaining.
Dam the new x17 just came out and i just ordered the Alienware Area-51m R2 2070..should i cancel order
Well I am biased as I own the 51m r2 😂 but it is a great laptop and I am assuming you got a good discount on it as it has been discontinued? The X17 looks nice but I am still waiting for mine to arrive to test it so I cannot give you any info on it yet 😭
Debating on getting the a51 now or waiting for the 3000 series gpus
yeah, that is a tough one. Some mobile 3000 series results have started appearing but I expect it will be at least Q2 2021 before we see an Area 51m with 3000 card
Hello man, great video and very helpful.
I have one question: I just ordered a maxed out area 51m, and I have one question:
Will it be able to run every videogame on the market? Is there anything it wont be able to run?
Also, this maxed out version I ordered has a 60hz qhd display, is it really that bad compared to the 144 1080p?
(2080 super, i9 10th gen, 64 gb ram)
Congratulations! I bet you can't wait. The image quality on the ghd will be a lot better than the 1080p it just won't be as smooth! Also you can easily add a 1080p 144/240hz external monitor for home gaming if you want the high fps
@@MashITTech oh okay, thank you so much!
How does it compare to Razor Blade Laptop ❓
Which is better to get it in i7 or i9 ? Is 50% more powerful or more ..
The alienware is more powerful as it allows more watts to the gpu and cpu, if performance is the priority get the alienware 👍

Could u point out how much more noise m17 makes than 51m, like how many decibel difference when they both on load. Appreciate!
I am planning to buy the area 51m r2 4k model. the refresh rate is really low 60Hz. will it be suitable for video editing if i am considering the 2080 nvidia graphics?

which one win?
For me the area 51m but I don't care about portability, I want power and lower noise :)
So am I right to say if I don't need to travel much, area 51 is the better option?
Yes. The cpu performance is incredible and it runs so much cooler and quiet than the r3

Brilliant video. Brilliant channel. Love your content. 👍
• Looking to purchase the Area-51m r2 in just a few days here.
I will be using it to augment my day trading capabilities on the NASDAQ as well as for hard core gaming purposes...
My question may seem a tab bit silly, (I am already sold on the GPU, CPU, etc.),
• Perhaps I simply missed the specifications in this video but:
- Is the Area 51m r2 screen a matte or glossy finish? Is the screen material comprised of a light-scattering anti-refraction layer, which reduces glare?
@@MashITTech
Hey man thanks for the quick reply!
(...)
For me personally, I went for the 360hz, 1080p screen to optimise the potential for triple 'A' title gaming, requiring high refresh rates.
unfortunately Dell havent offered a QHD panel on this model or even the new X17!! I am not sure what they are thinking.

I plan on all of the expansion packs, mods, and CC and I would like the laptop I get to still be great for the sims 5 (if it ever gets released). I'm also hoping to branch out to other games as well. Will area 51m come with a rtx 3080 anytime soon?
Fingers crossed! No news yet but the m15 and m17 have been updated already
I have a little afraid about the battery, will it be broken when we're charging and using at the same time?
Can we replace RTX 2070 with other ones?
@@MashITTech that’s such a bummer. Do you think the skinner versions with the 3080 gpu outperform the Area51m with the 2070?
@@brush8766 They do actually because they have higher wattage.

@@MashITTech Could you help me please:D
@@burhankaramustafaoglu5514 ok well only really you will know if you need 32 or 64gb? You need to see how much you are using currently. I would say 32gb is enough for most people unless you have huge projects. Storage is very very easy to add later so just get the most your budget allows but lastly definitely get the 300hz panel as it is a much better panel and you get tobii which although is useless for work does give you access to windows hello facial recognition 👍
@@MashITTech is there any big difference between 2933MHz and 3200 MHz , because that was the my point to ask you, I can only choose 32 GB 3200 Mhz or 64GB 2933 MHz. I will not pay for 64 so I have option to change.
So which lap is best 🕳️
For me the area 51m, I love it. But if you need portability then it may not be for you
Hello,I am new to this laptop and graphics card and all of that, I just sold my playstation and I am looking to buy my first ever gaming laptop.
I wish I could help here but I have no idea! How much space do you haver in the Cab? is power an issue at all?
