One-Stripe White Belt Gets into Street Fight!

- John Ikuma is a one-stripe white belt in the Gracie Combatives program who hasn't trained for over 5 months. On Friday, March 24, his jiu-jitsu was put to the test when he intervened in a violent assault. The very next day, he returned to class and he broke down the entire incident for Rener as well as all the students in attendance at the 10am Gracie Combatives class. John managed the distance AND the damage. Amazing!

I lost it at "I did this for 30 minutes"
Or maybe it took that long for the cops to show up and he couldn't now walk away after having become involved.
Well, he was trying to catch up on the missed training :) He had to get a roll in somehow.
lose track of time when your having fun :)
Themayseffect hilarious :] ( and the comment above)
HAHAHAH same.
This sounds like a Brian callen story
A callen story would have ended with him being given a blackbelt and everyone being in awe of him and definitely some latent homosexuality.
Lmao 😂
Amazing
If he fought off 10 guys who had guns then yes it would have been a brian callen story
😅
The brilliance of this art is defeating an opponent, without actually hurting them.
Yeah but a lot of the times when you see it used it street situation, the guy who gets subdued ends up hurting the BJJ more.than he gets hurt himself.
redrizzla1989 You have any evidence?
Unless you want to
Well hurt him a little so he thinks twice about his actions in the future
@@redrizzla1989 yes, show us some links to back up your claims.
this man is an outstanding citizen. . the fact that he used his bjj defensively to control the situation is awesome! no one gets hurts, the situation gets under control, all parties are happy : )
I knew a guy that used to train at my gym, and by the time he got his 2nd stripe, he had used bjj to stop a prisoner from killing him (he’s a prison guard)
Love the commentary. “Fortunately the drunk guy didn’t do jiu jitsu.”
AMAZING TEACHER ! it's crazy like I'm not even learning jujitsu but I get chills learning from these videos, it seems like they are so comfortable in literally any position and if it's consistent
The enthusiasm of the instructor throughout the story had me cracking up
A lot of people are really fucking useless in situations like these. All they do is sit/stand and watch or, like Rener said, record the incident with a damn camera phone. It's a crying shame more people aren't willing to step up when needs be. I understand putting oneself in danger, but morally what else is a person supposed to do in a situation like this?
Hedylogos most of the time what happens is the bystander effect, where people think someone else will react and hopefully defuse the problem. Also everyone has a plan until the get punched in the face.

I know where you saw that haha
+J everyone has a plane until they get stabbed or shot*.
I don't recommend most people doing what he did. It's very dangerous if you have no training.
Jesus, even their 1 strip students are killers....
[MADD]Scientist mentor kurtishi.
thats bjj man. i got choked out by white belts today. mind you im a white belt ahaha

anyone else think "Dude! Don't cross your feet" when he took his back?
He also had the inferor leg for knee on belly. He was showing his back lol.
He’s a white belt n cmon u think a random guy gonna know how to break ur ankle if u cross your feet?
First thought
@@TheSands83 Expect the unexpected. You never know what person might do that just to do it or if they watched a video and retained some memory at that moment.
Random drunk guy probably isn't much of a threat to break his ankle in that situation.
What I love about Gracie Combatives is that it is street defense oriented Jiu Jitsu working from a clinch against an opponent who's main arsenal is striking - every position in Combatives assumes you are being struck at with punches.
" every position in Combatives assumes you are being struck at with punches.", yeah, they assume [for no good reason] you can safely eat a punch on the way in, absorb a rabbit punch on the ground and then gain dominance... but they do not assume being gouged, ripped, neck-cranked, stabbed or kicked or grappled by another attacker. So it is lunacy for the street.
Daniel Skipp and yet this man's story says otherwise...
exept they do though they also assume head buts
Daniel Skipp
They (we, us, me) do not assume you can safely eat a punch on the way it. One of our rules says - who manage the distance, manage the damage. We tell all students the first thing they have to think about is protecting themself from striking.
There is no such thing like "absorbing a rabbit punch and gain dominance". Every situation is different. Every opponent is different. Depends on indicators from a "bad guy" - you protect yourself at first, then make them tired while you preserve your energy and finish the fight if you have to.
Being gouged or grappled - false. You will learn during gracie combatives how to defend yourself from that.
Ripped - Women empowered - different course. Men dont get ripped
Neck-crank and stabbing with a sharp object ect - less common behaviour on the street (according to statistics). Same with the kicks, If someone can headkick other person it means that is skilled opponent....no one leg kick on the street. And you got to be very unlucky to be knock-out by kick to the liver on the street by unskilled opponent.
Please, go to any ctc close to you and just try....You will have a free trial...judge Gracie Combatives course after you try it....not before
better yet, go to a CTC and tell the blue belts you want to test your theory on them. See if they will spar with you and if they can defend themselves.
Well done, brō.
Big ups to Gracie for awarding the new Gi and rewarding/reinforcing the "new begining." If you're part of the Gracie family as a student, you should do all in your power to stay a part of the fam. Because you will have the best caliber of people that always push you, slways encourage you , and always have your back (and sides, front, top, bottom, in, out, etc) and will treat you like the brother you are. Cheers!
Watching this 3 years later but I found this so incredibly inspirational. Incredible humility on display from student to teacher to class. Really motivational. Have been aching to begin BJJ but have been a little terrified to start, so for me at this very moment was rewarding to witness.
It’s been 1 year, did you start?!
@@NicholasTSilveira Thank you for asking this, Nick. Well done. In fact I have not started.
@@rusticrow go start!!! I started over 1 year since u wrote this comment and have made great progress. that can be you too! you will get good if you show up and give a little bit of effort
@@KamalaLovingMan Thanks for that comment and encouragement, Michael. I do the equivalent in "showing up" daily in other areas just not BJJ, mainly because of my knees. But I know that even though my knees will hurt with BJJ they will hurt less if I do it. And perhaps give me the impetus to keep strengthening them outside of BJJ. Again, thanks for the advice and comment!
Russell Collins I started bjj 7 weeks ago and it's one of the best things I've ever done!
It doesn't make any sense in a great way, you think you're making progress and then something Amazing happens and you learn again. It's the most humbling experience in a self defence format, all your old assumptions are just blown away. If you go with the attitude of I'm here to learn, tap often and ask people to explain you'll love it. Give it a try!
Rener: This happened two days or three days ago?
White belt: LAST NIGHT.
Rener: *i got way too much shit going on*
I love Rener, so willing to reenact it's great
That sentiment of I will probably never use Jiu Jitsu for myself is 100%. As an older, new practitioner, I don’t see myself ever being drawn in to a bad situation. But having a family and the way things are all over it’s 100% possible to stumble upon an altercation just going to the store…
All those adults look like Jedi’s lmao
Muscle memory! 20+ years after my last judo class, as a teenager, and I still have the muscle memory. I was only a green belt, but I never forgot. I have been practicing Kuk Sool Won for 8 years, and every now and then, I like to have a little fun in class with hip throws, break falls and grappling. I am Starting my 2nd degree black belt testing soon, whenever this pandemic is over.
That's awesome, Ryan! 🙏🏾
A true martial artist... well done.
True martial artist is the one who doesn't need to internet the story, just let it motivate you yo get back on the mat.

Years ago I was playing with my girlfriend at the time and fireman carried her toward my house after tickling her. A passing bicyclist made a u turn and asked “ma’am, are you ok?” I said we were playing and he said “I wasn’t asking you” after she confirmed I thanked him. you never forget as much as you think. we have had people come in that did a martial art 10 years ago and still remember things and can apply it.
Jiu-jitsu is great for California. But I prefer glock when I’m in a different state.
Garnet Nard same here brother
It does not make any difference if you are white belt or black belt, don´t try to play hero like the guys on the video, chances are high you gonna get shot in the face. Call the police.
agauerm that’s very cowardly of u say, truth is if I got shot in the face doing what that man did I would be ok with dying with purpose and my family would be proud that I gave my life to protect a defenseless victim.
@@Brian-hg3gt In germany we would call you: Ehrenmamn
You do realize guns are legal in California?
Every police officer I have ever talked to tells me that there is nothing more dangerous than trying to intervene in a domestic violence situation because sometimes the person you think you are protecting can suddenly become agressive.
Bingo. Story not to long ago of a man at a bar attacking a woman. Business guy steps in and pulls the guy to the ground. Woman then attacks then attacks the good Samaritan allowing her BF to draw a gun and kill the guy. She then ran off with her BF. Way to unpredictable. Could be her pimp, a drug dispute, she's just messed up, etc.
Yea...don't intervene...just call the cops and explain the situation.
@@coltondulmus2365 Agree 100% I have intervened a number of times, and yes, it could go badly wrong. But with overstretched Police forces, what else can you morally do? Stand there and film them? No, get involved, but be aware of the risks.
That guy is really tall considering Rener's 6'4.
ye probily controlled the guy so good just cause hes a lot bigger then the drunk guy rather then his bjj is good
Geogaming YT basic bjj is useful
Lmao hows 6'4 tall thats like average here in the Netherlands. 6'9 is tall
Hassan Benhammou nop, 6ft 1/2 is average in Netherlands, stop lying. Also, not everyone is from Netherlands
Wtf rener isn't 6'4 lmao
Great job, great attitude, this whole story was beautiful.
The fastest cop response times r maybe 15mins AT THE BEST it's all more reasons 2 train in martial arts
And... conceal carry? What if the drunk guy had a weapon?
Depends on the area you live in too, you’ll notice that generally the suburbs get faster police response times.
You will never need martial arts of any kind if you carry a firearm, ever. That being said, if you happened to forget it at the house and got into a situation where you needed to defend yourself, knowing BJJ is incredibly useful.
Geralt Of Rivia yea cause when someone starts choking you from behind your firearm is gonna be so useful
@@TheGreatHotDogConsumer there are situations where jiu jitsu would be effective and more importantly legal self defense but a gun would not, despite what many say pulling a gun on a guy harassing you in the bar is a bad idea. There are also areas where you might not be able to take a gun or situations where being able to grapple will help you deploy your firearm
that takedown though...
I cringed hard, do this in concrete and it's game over
Bad guys don’t often have good base there very tippable

Americans sure do know how to tell a good story.
And make up stories
@@T2ManOnTheMoon I mean...it's really not that crazy of a story...he held a drunk belligerent guy for 30 minutes...What's so impressive about that story that you feel the need to be cynical?
@Seamus Donaghy I mean, once one person handles the situation most people don't give two shits about it anymore.
Not many people are going to get out of their vehicle to help because they already see the situation as being handled.
Reminds me of the time I pulled my car over to help a broke down van out of the road, only me and the driver pushed it out of rush hour traffic because they saw one person helping another and saw that as enough people. Sure would have been nice to have at least 4 people instead of me and the driver push a 1500 pound vehicle up a small incline.
Sure anyone could do it, but most people aren't going to, this is the age of electronics and apathy. Nobody gives a shit as long as it's not impeding their day.
@@T2ManOnTheMoon of course! I live in LA and in the movies they are never going to put the amount of Mexicans that live here or how racists are Americans, or the homeless in the street or how old and ugly is the city or how expensive or dirty is here!!! also the party is only until 1:30 am!!! but they make movies and songs about LA!!!! fuck bro they are the masters of marketing and lies! The more i watch gracie breakdowns on situations, the more i realize how scary and dangerous the streets are...rarin' to train jiu jitsu!
Hmmm, domestic dispute call that takes 30 minutes for a response on THE STREET with SEVERAL CARS PRESENT? What city is that? Caracas?
Oakland, or Stockton PD lol
Almost all US cities...
Los Angeles. He said La Cienega and Venice. West of Down town
Literally anywhere in the US.
No worse than Caracas... it's California! Or as I affectionately know it as Californiastan!
What an awesome and amazing trainer or coach rewarding his student for that act of civil and valor.
Cops who show up 30 minutes later should be buying that man lunch! Thanks to John for being human and getting involved.
TOTALLY LYING!!!! every one knows BJJ doesn't work in THE STR33TZ because LAVA and stuff, jokes jokes. Im always amazes me how even if stop training for a long time you never forget the core movements and its like that with almost all functional arts boxing, bjj ,muay thai ,wrestling.
buddy Gzus lava aint no choke... uhm joke ;)
Derrick W it's molten stone, the stuff in volcanos :) There is a childs game called "the floor is lava" where you must move around the house without touching the floor. So because the floor is lava, Jiu-Jitsu doesn't work, because you take your oponent to the ground. That's the whole joke.
Btw lava is also part of the portugese word for lever "aLAVAnca"
"aLAVAnca" MIND BLOWN
Love a ''floor is lava'' reference. Props man!
I have been training muay thai for about 25 years and i get demolished by white belts bro. If standing up i can do a little but before i know iam locked up in a choke or arm bar. So BJJ is the new way of life for me
Well done! Thanks for sharing this recent story of Gracie Jiu-jitsu in action.
DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANG THAAAT'S the Saturday morning class??? SHIIIIIIIIT, that'll be the day if my school sees ONE THIRD this attendance on a Saturday morning!!!!!
LoL
As a retired police lieutenant and black belt holder in Korean Tae Kwon Do with some training in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, I will say that first instinct is to help someone in need. However, as a police officer you'd be surprised how many domestic violence calls I'd go on to find similar situations where husband beating wife or sister, mother, etc.. The second we had the suspect in custody the family turns against us. These types of situations are dangerous because the sister could have turned against him. Not only that, but you risk getting shot or really hurt if there are multiple attackers - hence the reason I trained in Tae Kwon Do for over 40 years. Granted, jiu-jitsu is brutal one on one, but speaking from experience I am sure glad I have mastered a few kicks and hand to hand combat in a multiple attacker situation. Of course someone well trained in jiu-jitsu should be able to handle more than one attacker, but the art is geared more toward one on one.
I respect your training, but TKD will get you hurt. Be careful with that stuff.
@@averagegiuseppe5640 I agree to a certain point and that’s why you need to diversify your training. I didn’t train in typical Tae Kwon Do. I trained for years with a Korean master who taught the Korean navy. More hand to hand combat and mastering basic kicks that have proved to be very effective. It’s saved my life countless times.
@@Total_Body_Fitness_USA Makes sense. Thanks for sharing.
Compelling story ~ and one brave guy ~ with a great followup from the instructor.
It seems like you can learn a lot of useful skills and principles, even at the beginner level.
Such a high quality video! Equally as engaging as it was informative
I'm glad it worked out for him. I'm reluctant to get involved in other people's problems. I've heard too many stories where a situation like this doesn't work out for the person doing the right thing. I have been training for going on three years now, but I still don't think it's a good idea to put myself in a situation like that. Maybe it's a character flaw. I don't know.
That’s why it would be a better idea to just call the police. Even with martial arts experience like that guy has, it could of easily been a deadly situation for someone. I would only use my martial arts against a man if he is trying to kill me.
The load clapping at the end was heartwarming. I love martial art dojo culture when done right
I have 2 stripes but dropped training damn I really wish I could get back to it.
for the good of others and defending with concern for the enemy. this is what being a martial artist is all about. good for him
Kudos to John for intervening when a lot of people today would just think it's "none of my business." I'll be sharing this.
Amazing!!! I did inner-city retail Loss Prevention with a full force policy for over 4 years, and I would not have been successful without Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and more importantly the combatives approach! I too have held down some drunks and crackheads, I've got some war stories and I never once got injured.
Rener nailed it when he said “That’s Master Cycle stuff.” Assuming it went down as described, pretty incredible for a one-stripe white belt… for non-initiates, that means he’s had anywhere between 20 and 40 classes total
Fantastic!! Great job
30 minutes hummm must be California
You gotta love Gracie Jiu Jitsu!! Awesome giveaway of the new Gi!
Plot twist: Girl highjacked the guys car and he was trying to get it back.
Why are people saying bjj this is gracie jiu jitsu 😂
Outstanding! Great job John!!!
I wish we could find a class/ instructor like this locally.
Fantastic work, John.
I’m not sure if anyone breaks down a confrontation better than the gracies. I would love to meet these guys one day.
This was more babysitting than street fight.
Most people don't know how to fight at all. Gracie Combatives is all about babysitting till your opponent burns themself out, or has to get choked out.
Then I heard the sound of my alarm clock and choked it out with one finger
I was literally typing you better give this guy another stripe!!!
My gym has a slightly different mentality. The guy attacking would be in the ICU and whoever from my gym was responsible would be out of there. lol
When he was describing what he did for 30 minutes... I died
just came to the realization that, when me and my brothers fought growing up, we unknowingly were using BJJ techniques against each other. Albeit basic stuff, but still pretty much what you see in this video. No matter how hard we fought we never punched/kicked, so our fights, and there were many, involved grappling. (important to know that i'm a triplet so most fights were more or less equal in terms of strength). Such a weird feeling watching this video realizing that. I suppose BJJ is kinda pure, or rather a "natural" fighting style in that after trial and error, fight after fight, these moves just emerged over the course of our roughhousing. dope
It's meant for submission or incapacitating
And not even one cell phone video of it online yet
That's because this story is number 1 bull$h!t.
I'm so envious 😭😭😭 no Gracie Jiu-jitsu here in Algeria 🇩🇿
Fantastic story. He was able to control a violent drunk and prevent further injury. I have no idea how imposing the other guy was, but it sounds like no one else had the courage to help out.
All I can say is....what a great video all around.
bjj has saved me several times
This is brilliant! I want to start jiu jitsu so bad!
A United Airlines passenger could have used the help of 3 BJJs to take care of business on 3 bullies acting as cops at O'Hare airport today.

Fairy tale.
While in rehab, someone tried to start a fight because I was talking about going to juijitsu during group and I convinced him to meet me at the gym instead as they had a free intro class. It worked

Always some white belt with some unbelievable street fight story. Fairy tale.
Great stuff. Also good to wear a rash guard under the gi, even a cheap beach one, men and women.

See a girl getting the snot beat out of her......”ma’am, are you Ok?” 😂😂😂😂
Great story and all although my concern is that these videos can spend more time on the bjj than a play by play which normally not to the point.

In my state you are legally authorized to use as much force as "a reasonable person would deem nessicary " to stop a threat to yourself or a 3rd party.
It gives you a wide range of choices to stop an aggressor in any circumstance
Can you do a Gracie Breakdown of "The Redeemer" movie feat. Marko Zaror and Nelson Nuñez? Great choreography sequence of BJJ/street self-defense, while also incorporating striking and takedowns as well.
That's insane commitment to do that for 30 minutes, although it probably seemed fast. I wonder how I would have done under those conditions. I'm a white belt with one stripe but idk if I am as proficient u set pressure as he is
