Yeah. That's true in this case anyway. This entire video was like "da-da-da-da da-da-da-da" The twilight zone, so strange, especially starting with the underground "earthscraper" in Mexico City and that rotating story-blocks tower right afterwards. And then, the underwater buildings are also fascinating, I'd love to go in one of them. I wonder if underwater pressures in buildings deeper underwater could cause windows to break over time. And that curved tower in Manhattan, imagine looking down into the bottom window in the top curve and seeing that view directly under your feet, or better yet lay on your stomach right in front of that bottom window, that would be even more fascinating than seeing the view out a high side window like we normally have

I live in NYC, I think it would be cool, but I already get vertigo standing on the sidewalk looking up at Central Park Tower, and One World Trade is an ugly building. If they build a big inverted U, I hope it's a good looking building, not just big. I think it's hard in NYC, every time a really tell building goes up, it's going to be aesthetically compared to The Empire State Building or thr Chrysler Building, which are art deco masterpieces. That Hudson Yards complex is a total did. Some of the buildings are interesting but together they are a hot mess. WTC is a Little better but not much. The Occulus at WTC is stunning, kind of saves the whole project. One Vanderbilt is a good looking new building with a great location.

@@Persac7 I don't find it aesthetically pleasing. To me it's not a graceful design. Then they cut corners on the most important visual element. It was supposed to have a tapered glass spire, but that got scrapped and the tacked and unimaginative antenna on top. Visually, to me, the architecture is weak. They should have done something more important looking. The design is visually compromised. At ground level, the first 200 feet of height Don't have a unified look. The site design is attractive, placement of buildings, open space. The memorial is Great. The architecture of the buildings feels generic. Then they repeat the same mistakes at Hudson Yards. It should have been a destination in the city, but is actually just more if the same.

Although I am a Torontonian by heart, i’m not faithful, I’m cheating on my own city, holding secret lustful thoughts towards Manhattan, along with the rest of New York City. Every time I go there, I never want to come back home, I’ve spent my entire life in downtown Toronto, it’s not even close to something the size of New York City, but it’s still a relatively large city, and I could never ever live in anything smaller then Toronto, which doesn’t really leave me with a lot of other choices, at least not in North America. There’s only one, actually two concern(s) I have each time I visit Manhattan, it has nothing to do with the cost of living, or the population density, but rather the ground it is built on...why? As most of you know, Manhattan is built on, for the most part, solid bedrock, which is generally extremely stable, allowing untold amounts of towers to be constructed upon it....but, the last couple of times I’ve been to Manhattan, and this is going to sound crazy, the ground actually feels different, as though it were moving slightly, almost what you might experience during a very minor tremor. So I did some research, while not a professional engineer or architect, my career is scientific in nature, and what I discovered, quite frankly, has me very concerned for the future of Manhattan and everybody who lives on it. I mention Manhattan in particular for one simple reason, although it’s part of New York city, it stands alone as an island, and because it is so low to sea level, if current sea level rise trends continue, sooner or later, much of Manhattan will be underwater. They already working on a solution, they are planning to construct a seawall completely surrounding Manhattan, to keep out the rising sea level, but that’s not the only problem it faces. I mentioned the tremors for a reason, when I was studying the construction of the three gorges dam in China, I discovered a fatal flaw which they have finally acknowledged, although they’ve known about it since day one, in typical communist fashion, they did everything they could to hide the truth from the public and the world. It’s the biggest hydroelectric dam on earth, and also the heaviest, so heavy in fact that is sinking into the ground, causing fractures to appear all across the dam, as well as causing minor earthquakes to occur within its vicinity. It too, is built upon solid bed rock, with piledriving‘s hundreds of feet deep, to help sustain it’s immense weight, however, not even the most advanced engineering on earth can save us from the whims of mother nature, and in this case, you cannot break the laws of physics. If you build something that’s far too heavy for the ground it lays upon, the ground is going to move, be it soil or bedrock, and I suspect the same will begin to happen in Manhattan. As they continue to build Skyscraper after skyscraper, each of them weighing thousands of tons, although built on solid bedrock, even that solid rock must give way to the laws of physics. Most of us see rock as an impenetrable a unmovable substance, very few realizing that it’s actually pliable under the correct conditions, and sadly, we have met those conditions. I have never once heard of anyone saying anything about this in regards to Manhattan in particular, but like I said, the last time I was there, again, I know how crazy this sounds, it literally felt like the ground beneath my feet was trying to tell me something. Because it such an old city, at least by North American standards, with untold long abandon caverns underground, built for the subways, substations, and basements of demolished buildings, all those voids, are creating a disaster waiting to happen. As they continue to build all these super tall skyscrapers, I fear that at one point, the ground in which they are built, is going to begin moving, and believe it or not, theoretically it is possible, although unlikely, but the fact that it is possible in the first place is reason to be concerned. I adore Manhattan, particularly, the very same buildings that may be putting the city at great risk, which ironically, make the city what it really is. I’m hoping it’s just my overactive imagination, as there are a lot of subway tunnels running all throughout the island, and as the trains go by, you can feel them on the sidewalk from the vibrations in the ground. I’m hoping that’s all it is, but after doing some research as I previously mentioned, part of me is afraid that was happening in China may happen in Manhattan if they continue to build at the rate that they are building. By this point I’m sure you think I’m absolutely crazy, I assure you I’m not, I’m perhaps a bit of an alarmist, but I’ve been to Manhattan more times than I can remember, but that last trip in 2019, just before the pandemic hit, left me with the most eerie feeling I have ever felt during all the times that I have been there, and I just can’t shake it. We all know, that no matter what we build, mother nature can destroy in mere seconds, we do tend to be a tad arrogant, in thinking that we are masters of the planet, but nothing could be further from the truth. Let’s not forget that every continent is literally floating on a sea of molten rock, I am referring to of course the tectonic plates. While bed rock is for the most part the safest material on which to build a large structure, if you build far too many of them on such a relatively small parcel of land, then nature and the laws of physics are going to remind us that we are not masters of the universe. Here’s a fun fact for you, during the last Ice Age, the glaciers were so heavy, they actually pushed down the tectonic plates here in North America, and although ages ago, after they receded, the ground is still rebounding, rising a couple of inches every single year. That’s why when you see most modern construction sites, after the main pit is dug, and the first slab poured, there is no activity whatsoever for several weeks, and there’s a reason for that. There waiting for the ground to equalize, if they didn’t do this, all of the buildings will begin to tilt and eventually topple over. Given that fact, while the same protocols were used to build every building in North America, the fact that we have the ability to build such heavy structures in such reasonably small areas, leads me to believe that sooner or later, the ground is going to react, and not in a good way. So to anybody reading this who is truly knowledgeable, please, tell me that I’m just crazy, and that what I’m saying is not possible, even though I suspect it is, because I’m not a professional in that regard, I’d love some feedback from those who are, thanks for listening.

Long post. Keep coming back to NYC. I may leave when I retire, but the city becomes a part of you. You feel towards it the same as a family member, you live it, even though it frustrates you at times. There's no place like it. Greenwich Village, Chelsea, West Village are all built on less stable ground, the bedrock there is too deep to put foundations for really tall buildings. That's why there are so few highrise there. I wish be they would do something to improve access to the in Waterfront on the East Side like on the West Side.
Toronto is a great city. It's so clean. We've really enjoyed visiting. We also love Montreal. Both are very cosmopolitan, love the nightlife in Montreal. We also love the provincial vibe in Quebec City. We really feel like we are away when we go there. Id love to go in the winter some time when in it's not be do crowded with other tourists. In some ways, the quality big life is better north of the border. But if you have it in you mind that NYC is a good place to live, you should give it a try to for a couple not years. Toronto will still be there if you want to go back.
I moved to San Francisco, was going to stay for three years, which turned into 15. I'm glad I did that, but would NEVER go back there to see live.

Its very true...isostatic adjustment is real. The sial and sima always try to adjust to the overlying weight which might eventually cause breakages and quite bad destructions

Tall buildings in Paris were only allowed at La Defense in recent years in order to keep the city beautiful - a good move, as some areas, such as Montparnasse and Front de Seine, have already been blighted by high buildings. If a city is already beautiful, ban towers. If there is nothing much special to recommend it, towers can add a certain amount of interest. The glass pyramid sets a bad precedent.

Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam."
Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!"
Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..."
Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!"
Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky."
Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction."
Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment?
