- In today's quick video I talk about paying for an oil change vs doing it yourself as well as is it better to do your own oil changes and finally benefits of having a garage do your oil changes.
I have owned many cars throughout my life. I think about 20 vehicles total. For many many years, I would perform the oil changes myself which was usually around $50 in total for both the oil and filter. As I have gotten older, I am starting to see the many benefits of paying to have my oil changed by a shop, garage and/or dealership. In this video, I talk about the positives and negatives (pros and cons) of doing oil changes yourself versus paying a shop or someone else to do the oil changes for you.
Well everyone, I hope you enjoyed today's quick video on paying for an oil change vs doing it yourself as well as is it better to do your own oil changes and finally benefits of having a garage do your oil changes.
I am by no mean affiliated with any instant oil change, shop, garage or dealership. If you find more value in performing oil changes yourself, than more power to you! If I have forgotten any pros or cons that I did not mention in this video, please leave them in the comments below!

The main benefit of doing it yourself is being able to examine the oil for particles , dilution, color and the exact amount that is drained to see if you've got underlying issues plus you can collect a sample for testing
Never thought of that positive of doing it yourself.
Will still go with DIY.
1. I don't have to worry about some newbie impact wrenching the drain bolt and over tightening the filter.
2. I don't have to worry that they really put in synthetic instead of scamming me with conventional oil.
3. I don't have to deal with them upselling me stuff.
All good points
Exact same here. Stealorship trashed my oil pan by cracking it at drain bolt. They epoxied it back together and I was wondering why oil change took so long?! Found it 8-9 months later when I DIY’d oil change
I do it myself not to save money but to maintain the relationship w my car. I’ll get it changed in a rush but it’s good to look around, and under the car see the belts, check fluid levels ect. Time to time u see a nail in the tire. And u get to show your kids/ nephews ect how to actually take care of their car.
Good reasons!
There aren’t any ‘cons’. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
It is a matter of personal preference of course. I do my own for a couple of reasons. No shop carries the oil or filter I use and having them shipped to the house is a no-brainer. Going under the vehicle myself I can inspect it for possible issues. I find even with 'off the shelf' items full synthetic at the shop is closer to 3x the price.
Those are good reasons. I hear ya
I'm in a situation where I look after and elderly parent, so my income is severely diminished. Luckily I've changed the oil in my cars a lot when I was younger so I'd rather save the money now and do it myself, but yeah when I was working I'd take it to a mechanic for the convenience.
I hear ya!
I did my own for 20+ years
Now just go to the local place and done and on my way in 15 minutes
Nice. Yeah its just more convenient
Canada's cost to buy the supplies is getting to the point its cheaper to not do it yourself...
I hadn't heard about that. How much is a 5 quarts in Canada?
A lot of good points to have it done by a shop. I live in the country, and driving to the shop, having them do it, then driving home takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. Time is money, and that's a lot of time. Also, I can by oil and filter on line, and have it shipped for free. The only aggravation is the disposal, but I only have to that once or twice a year.
Whoa, 2.5-3 hours is a haul. I would do it myself in your situation as well. Where do you live? I am thinking of moving out of the city :-)
Yeah, til they botch the job and there’s a trail of oil from their shop to my house. No thanks!
Haven't heard this happens to often. Best to find a shop that has good reviews
Can do an oil change in 30 minutes at home-what’s his issue? Takes you longer to drive to Jiffy Lube and have them do it.
Well I still have to drive to the auto parts store which is 12 minutes away from me. Then usually 10 minutes to check out and another 12 minutes to drive home. Then I have to recycle my oil which is yet another drive to the auto parts store. So yes, about 75+ minutes in total
25 seconds in and I know this vid is bunk
Why is that?
My friend thought the same thing and he took his truck to Jiffy Lube while the sudden his engine blew because they didn't put the screw back down there on the bottom and it blew his engine the one thing though Jiffy Lube did honor it and putting a brand new engine in his vehicle
Geez. That's not cool at all. Sounds like they didn't perform a pressure test afterwards like they are suppose to.
The older i get the more im leaning towards the quick oil shops.
Make sure you get a good one. You are best to mark your oil filter and check your oil. I have heard of places that don't do anything except charge you. Make sure you check it out, afterwards. They are also known to unhook something on your vehicle that will cause a check engine light a little while later, hoping you will bring it back so they can charge you more money just to plug in what they already unhooked. I, myself have come across a few shops that have tried to charge me for a lot of stuff the vehicle didn't even need. Especially transmission shops! You'll be very lucky to find a good transmission shop.
Good call. I do check my oil before and after. That's pretty low of some shops to do that!
There are many benefits for sure!
