I miss this era of Lego and Lego magazine. Not just because it was nostalgic for me as a kid but I always thought the stylized boxes were really cool and some of the play features were unique. One of my all-time favorite Lego magazine covers was the one shortly before the movie came out I believe it was September of 2001 and they had a recreation of the Lego Hogwarts up on a hillside at night lit up with a bunch of little lights and things I used to love that kind of miniature photography

Hi there Kelton great video ! I have a OG Harry Potter troll I could send you if you would like for your collection (minus the vest and bottom piece) ! If not no worries love your vids man !
Though I myself never owned any of these (or even any minifigure-scale sets from before 2003), I do remember seeing a decent array of this early wave in the bedroom of the daughter (who was two years older than myself) of someone my mom was friends with on or around Saturday, July 10, 2004-which was several months after the Azkaban wave had been released. But I'm not completely sure as to how many sets she had, as I only remember at least the "Hogwarts Classroom" (4721), because of the chalk board panel. Even as it also came in the "Azkaban version" of Hogwarts Castle (4757) released in April 2004. But going back to the original wave covered here, many of the aesthetic of certain sets-such as the first version of Hagrid's Hut (4707) are owed to the fact that they were designed before the introduction of curved slopes, as well as the color of "earth green" (sometimes called "Metru green") by Lego as a whole. This is also most-prominently reflected in the somewhat slanted appearance of the first version of Hogwarts Express (4708), even if it isn't nearly as angular or blocky as several space themes from the early-mid 1990s-or even some of the early Star Wars sets from '99 and 2000. Regarding the color of "bright violet" on Professor Quirrell at 10:41, it first appeared in 1998 and was exclusive to the "Competition" subtheme of Technic for the first three years of its use. During 2001, it also appeared in two early Bionicle sets (1389 and 8548) before it started appearing in Harry Potter. In fact, the standard 1x2 brick in this color would've been exclusive to the original Hogwarts Castle (4709) if not for its appearances in "Bulk bricks" tubs for several years until 2004. The last regular set to feature this color was a set (4852) based on the first Spider Man film (2002) released in mid-late 2003, though there is unconfirmed evidence that the Technic 96-millimeter corrugated pipe in this color made one final appearance in 2010 in an education kit before the color was phased out entirely.

What I appreciate about these early sets is that even though they were made for the films, they are very clearly based off of the books first and foremost. Although I gotta say I have a personal grudge against the double sided head appearing in this theme with Prof Quirrell/Voldemort as I really do not care for double sided heads. I haven’t EVER, not even as a kid actually playing with them. You can’t make a figure bald or even give them a basic baseball cap/pilots hat/firemans hat without it looking incredibly strange. It looks bad and is bad, sorry Charlie.
For me, these early sets had the ugliest minifigure molds and colors. But the recent ones, oh wow, I consider them Lego’s best. Especially the first HP CMS (the second one’s colors felt too tacky for me).
I might possibly be crazy, but I surprisingly feel the complete opposite. The old ones were really pleasing to me (as someone who has no nostalgia for them, as I had none of the sets and disliked Harry Potter as a child), and the new ones look like some of the ugliest Minifigs I’ve ever seen LEGO produce, lol. What was so great about this original wave was that they took inspiration from both the book and the movie, something we don't really get anymore
And it seems, at least in this instance, that they needed to rely on the books due to a lack of information from the studio 😆
