I'm not even a dozen minutes in and am already feeling heavily personally besieged by how Perturabo is being described. seeing as to how am not an immortal demigod, i should probably allow myself the chance to trust others a little bit more.
Perterabo is a fascinating character study. He is one of the smartest, and most stalwart of the Primarchs. He originally wanted to better people's lives. But he was pushed into using his abilities for war by not only the father who found him on the planet he landed on, but also the father that created him. He didn't work well with others, nor did he form social bonds well; even with his own brothers later on in his life. He could have made the Imperium truly great. Maybe even taken it to a new golden era, if he hadn't been made a tool of war. Things may have been different for him. He had the potential of being one of the best of the best Primarchs. One of the best of the Imperium altogether. His is a story that makes you feel like there is so much lost potential.
He's an INFJ for sure, having high expectations of others, the same as to himself. He gets disappointed time and time again because he did not communicate those expectations that is why he was anti-social, protecting himself from vulnerability as he has only known exploitation for what he can provide, and not appreciated for what he is. Leaving the siege was the least he could do for himself, I mean he could've turned on the traitor legions out of spite but he did not. Such an unfortunate tale Perturabo is, but his "Fuck it" attitude at the end of the siege was a tale as old as time.
Perty is one of the few PRIMARCHS I can't excuse but at least somewhat understand falling. He is a man of practical data, the emperor withheld so much data the perty on logic followed his path. The emperor was the galaxies biggest hypocrite in a lot of ways, probably by design. Perty saw a man saying don't worship me, and then seeing evidence of the worship, the emperor said gods arents aren't real and perty saw evidence of them. List goes on.
I think that there was something "wrong" with Perturabo from the beginning. Either Chaos pierced the wards the Emperor erected around his capsule or the Emperor created an unbalanced personality in The Lord of Iron. He was extremely paranoid and had a marked tendency towards grievance. Perhaps this was down to The Eye's looming presence, but Perturabo was on a path towards dehumanization by the time The Emperor rediscovered him. Unfortunately, the Master of Mankind did not attempt to set him straight. This bloody path was much like that of Curze or Angron, and it was intentionally accelerated by Horus and Erebus. The Hrud assignment of Horus made Perturabo crack, and the rebellion of Olympia, engineered by Erebus, made the Primarch fall completely off of the edge. Of all the fallen Primarchs, Perturabo's tragedy was the most preventable. He was correct, ultimately. Damakos, the Emperor and Horus all saw him as a weapon and held the human soul of Perturabo in a much lower regard. Any hope he might have had for leading a truly human life was dashed by the era he was born into and the skillset he was born with. Perhaps the main factor working against him was this Lord of Iron persona assigned to him by his father. In some respects, Perturabo was no such thing. Outwardly, yes, Perturabo was a tough guy. But just below the surface was a soul perhaps even more sensitive than that of Sanguinius or Vulkan. Moreover, that soul was very damaged. And it seemed that during the Great Crusade, no one could spare the time to mend the damage the Primarch had sustained during childhood. If Angron, literally brain-damaged during his upbringing, was still used for the potent weapon he was, what hope did Perturabo have of being made whole? Dorn and Guilliman, raised in relative privilege, were treated as a sons by The Emperor. Perturabo and Angron, damaged before their discovery, were treated as a weapons. Now the galaxy is still paying the price for that oversight.
Agreed. His primarch book suggests that he was awake during his time travelling through the warp in his pod. I think Angel Exterminatus has a passge that informs us that he was even conscious on Terra. He has genetic 'blue prints' or something he says he saw on Terra before they were stolen. He definitely is some kind of autistic genius.
