  • Here's a VHS tape I can find nowhere else online, not even a mention or listing mentioning its existence.
This tape, which seems to exist to attract tourists to the Snowdon Mountain Railway, can be dated from between 1986 and 1991 due to the narration's mention of the railway having "two diesels", since they received their third diesel sometime in 1991. The mentions of "nearly 100 years old" also match up as the line's centenary was marked in 1996.
Interesting this VHS tape is presented in wide screen, which makes me wonder if this was intended for display in a smalelrtheater with a larger than usual television or projection screen attached to a VCR, such as in the base station of the railway itself.
I can only wonder if all this footage was filmed on a single day or not.
For many years this video's cheesy synth music calming narration, and low resolution mountain steam shots have served as a comfort and sleep aid for me, hopefully those out there interested enough to have read this description will enjoy this video as well.

I absolutely love this documentary; The very Welsh narrator, great coverage of the line's history, and the very 90s-soundtrack

Nice to see the railway back in the day , it’s very different now , I get the impression that they’re trying to cut down on steam , not the same anymore

Well it seems the upside is that now, you can actually pay specifically if you want a steam experience. As I understand prior to a few years ago you just got whatever locomotive they happened to be using on that particular departure. It’s a light year ahead of what’s happened on the Mount Washington Cog Railway over here in the states.

Whats funny is all the copyright claims on the music in this video allowed me to legitimately purchase the tracks for my own listening enjoyment. Otherwise finding clean high quality versions of the soundtrack would be quite impossible.

Why do the mountain engines push instead of pull?

It’s for safety. The engine is NOT attached to the coach, the contact between the coach and engine are maintained by the effect of gravity and the incline of the railway. If the locomotive derails or loses control, there is no chance of it dragging the coach along with it, and the coach can break to a halt without it also having to work against the weight of the engine. This setup proved critical in allowing the coach to break to a halt when the pinions of Engine No. 1 lost contact with the rack rail and rolled out of control on opening day in 1896. A guard in the front of the coach can signal to the locomotive operator during ascent should the line ahead be obstructed.

      That saved LADAS’s coach

For context , LADAS derailed and rolled down the mountain on the opening day , only one death occurred and that was of a man who jumped clear and hit his head on a rock , only the motion frames , chassis , wheels and pistons were intact once the engine reached the bottom of the mountain , if the coach were coupled the engine would’ve dragged it along with it too!
