Nation of Islam organisers say a (m) million African Americans have joined the Million Man March in Washington D-C although police have not yet given an official count.
The marchers have gathered at the Capitol to affirm their self-respect and protest the conditions besetting much of black America.
The controversial organiser of the march, Nation of Islam leader, Louis Farrakhan, defended his stand and said he was led by God .
Tens of thousands of African Americans, from all over the U-S, have joined the massive march on Capitol Hill.
The marchers came with one message - unity among black men.
They waved dollar bills to emphasise the economic power of black people.
The crowd was asked to reflect on the status of African Americans, to renew the same sense of purpose that sparked the civil rights movement more than 30 years ago.
But there was no doubting the centre of attention, the man who organised the march, Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.
He made his way to the stage to thunderous applause but despite the welcome, the lead up to the march has been rife with criticism for what some have labelled his racism.
Farrakhan has called Judaism a "gutter religion" and recently defended his use of the term "bloodsuckers" to describe Jews,
He addressed these issues in his speech.
    SOUNDBITE:
So today, whether you like it or not, God brought the idea through me. And he didn't bring it through me because my heart was dark with hatred and anti-Semitism. He didn't bring it through me because my heart was dark and I'm filled with hatred for white people and for the human family of the planet.
SUPER CAPTION: Louis Farrakhan, Nation of Islam Leader
Farrakhan displayed his skills as an orator in front of the huge crowd, calling on them to look at each other and realise what a triumph it was that they were all there.
    SOUNDBITE:
We responded to a call and look at what is present here today. We have here those brothers with means and those who have no means. Those who are light and those who are dark, those who are educated, those who are uneducated.
SUPER CAPTION:Louis Farrakhan, Nation of Islam Leader
He called on them to be proud of their skin colour and rejoice in being 'new Americans'.
    SOUNDBITE:
There's a new black man in America today, a new black woman in America today.
SUPER CAPTION:Louis Farrakhan, Nation of Islam Leader
But many marchers stress that the Million Man March is about much more than Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.
They say they're in Washington - not to support Farrakhan but to save the idea of black brotherhood and to create a new movement.
    SOUNDBITE:
"This isn't about Farrakhan, this is about respect, unity and love for the brothers. And we're trying to get something out of this, out of life. We're tired of being behind everything, we want to be in charge sometime. We want to unify and that's what this is about - unity. Look at all these brothers around here."
    SUPER CAPTION: Marcher
Black leader Jesse Jackson led the crowd in chanting to exalt the diversity of the human race.
    SOUNDBITE:

Bill left Washington that day and he was in Texas doing a speech. When the so called 1st White/Black President should have been in DC. bill was a luke warm President when it came to Black people. He was cool among you and hot amongst white. Go check the history.

Wrong! The Million Man March was acidentally called a "march." Minister Farrakhan orginally called it a movement. But the media ran with the word, march. In stead of pointing fingers of what Farrakhan has not been doing according to your standards, I question you what have you done to make the Black community better?????

All these recent egregious acts of police brutality brought me here. I’m not hash tagging because there are too many ppl who look like me who have died by the hands of police brutality. Black on black crime is OUR OWN ISSUE so no one outside of my race better not dare iterate that to me. I’m too pissed off right now.

Many of those who claim Martin Luther King Jr today never supported him when he was challenging this wicked government. Same with Malcolm X and Kwame Ture and the list is endless. The Hon Minister also said, not all of our people will make it. It’s real.
