  • Learn about the powerful demonstrations that unfolded on Washington, DC's National Mall in the 1990s. The decade witnessed a series of significant marches, including the March for Women's Lives in 1992, drawing 750,000 demonstrators, and the 1993 march for gay rights, attended by nearly a million people. However, the event that captured the nation's attention was the Million Man March in 1995, organized by Minister Louis Farrakhan. Controversial yet impactful, the march aimed to promote unity, responsibility, and accountability among African-American men, leaving a profound sense of brotherhood and hope for a different future. Despite debates about the exact numbers in attendance, the march resonated with a powerful message: "We matter." This video is part of WETA's WASHINGTON IN THE 90s documentary, which captures the history of Washington, DC during the 1990s. This historical documentary captures a pivotal era of DC history, when the city transitioned from a period of crisis to a period of opportunity.
