There always needs to be faces that stay faces and heels that stay heel. What always helps with faces, though is when someone does something so reprehensible that certain heels "side with the face" by refusing to interfere or "back up" the heel that committed said act. There are many nuanced layers to being both a face and heel.

I think the New Day kinda blurred the line between heel and face. When they were heels, they cheated to win matches, but they were always smiling and making they kept the audience smiling and entertained. Plus, fans kept buying their merch. The way I see it, they were always faces to some degree.
