  • I took advantage of the pandemic over the summer to build a pizza oven out of perlite/cement. I used a fitness ball for the dome mold and the base is made of fire bricks. I am by far a pro at this, but it worked for us and is still working great 8 months later with no issues. It was a fun project and cost around $200-250. Please comment below with any questions!

    The best DIY Pizza Oven build. With NO exceptions! Loaded with extremely important tips others overlooked, such as the ratio of height of dome to door opening. Very similiar to cob oven ratio.

      No. But when I do I will follow your instructions.
      Perlite seems to be a better option than vermiculite. It appears to have properties more suitable to the application.

    I liked your vid and it’s great to see the kids helping you out
    I bet they did most of the work 😉
    I have had my oven for a couple of years and lit my first fire yesterday to force out any winter moisture
    It is by far one of the best things I own and it’s a great family gathering tool will it was before Covid
    Hopefully when things get better it will be great to have people around again
    Great vid 👍😅

    I built using this exact method and the end product turned out great! Not great for heat retention but it did the trick provided I could get the temperature inside the oven hot enough. Unfortunately, I had a tree fall on my oven and smashed the thing into a million pieces. I did use fire bricks as the base.

    • @TheKevinLC
      @TheKevinLC  2 роки тому

      oh no that sucks! now you can build a bigger one! good luck

      Next time make sure you insulate the base and have a thermal break between your base and any surrounding masonry or concrete or that material will suck the heat out of your oven floor. Otherwise you are likely to have a harder time browning the bottom of your crust. The best way to retain heat is proper insulation all around. The oven floor is the best thermal mass for storing heat in an oven like this that doesn’t have a brick dome. An oven like this will never retain heat as well as one made completely from thick fire brick, especially if that oven is well insulated all the way around. There’s just more thermal mass for storing heat, a bigger heat battery.

    Hello I’m confused how you got the dimension for the dome height, my door opening is 11 h x 15w so what should be the dome height

    • @TheKevinLC
      @TheKevinLC  8 місяців тому

      Something I read, but I don’t think it needs to be exact. But if you do follow this advice if you had a 10 inch dome your tunnel height would be 6.6 inches. Good luck!

    • @TheKevinLC

      Perlite is a natural silica so that’s safe. Everything I’ve read make them sound safe for the dome. Not sure if it’s safe to use as a base though- I used firebricks for the base. Good luck!

    • @TheKevinLC

      Need to figure out the circumference of the ball. You can always start with a smaller hole and work your way up to the size that fits the ball snug. Add air to the ball once it’s in position to secure it. Good luck!

    Hi! 4 questions: Hasn't it cracked?
    Doesn't so much interstice reduce the insulation?
    Up to what temperature does it rise?
    How much does the Perlite-Cement structure weigh? Greetings.

    • @TheKevinLC
      @TheKevinLC  2 роки тому

      No it has not cracked and we live in the northeast with some crazy winters! I did tile it and I always keep it covered. But it went a winter not tiled with no issues.
      My thermometer’s max temp is 750 degrees and it always maxes out.
      The perlite-cement structure was not very heavy- I moved it by hand to the base. Good luck on your project!
