Something I read, but I don’t think it needs to be exact. But if you do follow this advice if you had a 10 inch dome your tunnel height would be 6.6 inches. Good luck!

Thank you! I live in the Northeast so I hear ya! I use mine all year. I start with a small fire and let the whole thing heat up slowly to avoid cracking. I also keep it covered so moisture doesn’t seep in anywhere. Hope this helps and enjoy your new oven!

Next time make sure you insulate the base and have a thermal break between your base and any surrounding masonry or concrete or that material will suck the heat out of your oven floor. Otherwise you are likely to have a harder time browning the bottom of your crust. The best way to retain heat is proper insulation all around. The oven floor is the best thermal mass for storing heat in an oven like this that doesn’t have a brick dome. An oven like this will never retain heat as well as one made completely from thick fire brick, especially if that oven is well insulated all the way around. There’s just more thermal mass for storing heat, a bigger heat battery.

No it has not cracked and we live in the northeast with some crazy winters! I did tile it and I always keep it covered. But it went a winter not tiled with no issues. My thermometer’s max temp is 750 degrees and it always maxes out. The perlite-cement structure was not very heavy- I moved it by hand to the base. Good luck on your project!

The ball was 52 cm, but go as big as you can with the ball! I bought 2 bags of perlite that were 2 cubic feet each. Good luck!

The canal is about 9 inches and the cooking surface is about 18 inches. The door width is about 12 inches. I use an 11 inch peel. Hope this helps- good luck!

Perlite is a natural silica so that’s safe. Everything I’ve read make them sound safe for the dome. Not sure if it’s safe to use as a base though- I used firebricks for the base. Good luck!

I never really looked into lime. I did tile mine though. Does it create a water barrier?

@@TheKevinLC well the sand a cement creates a barrier but the rain water eats away more quickly without lime....seeing as you have tiled it that should give the protection anyway!

Need to figure out the circumference of the ball. You can always start with a smaller hole and work your way up to the size that fits the ball snug. Add air to the ball once it’s in position to secure it. Good luck!

Yes drill a hole in the circle then use a jigsaw.

Great so far! i live in the northeast so it survived a cold winter no problem. I kept it covered when i wasn't using it. I just finished tiling it so that will help protect it from the elements. It's a fun project- let me know how it turns out!

No. But when I do I will follow your instructions. Perlite seems to be a better option than vermiculite. It appears to have properties more suitable to the application.

The mold was about 2 inches thick. I used just over 2 cu ft of perlite. The Home Depot brand. Good luck!

Iam starting to build this. My question is why we are not using sand and what are the advantages by using it please answer.

@@Kids_natural_learning I didn't use sand, I used concrete mix for base and oven 50% portland cement and pearlite worked excellent have already cooked 10 times on it, it has a few small cracks, but everyone says is normal
