Thanks for all the videos. Ive been watching for a long time and I had complications with getting through high school(medical problems). But I knew I wanted to weld while pursuing my dreams and I did an apprenticeship/was a welder helper for about 9 months doing all sorts of jobs and it was that experience that got me hired today for working in a shop TIG welding full time I start monday you showed me that even tho I'm only 17 and had trouble in school you can still work hard and get where ya want to be thanks
I had a bed built by Hot Shot Specialty Welding in Dallas tx. SLICK! I absolutely love it. I’m on my 4th rig and have a little bit of every rig designed into my current rig.
My welding trucks were always flatbeds 80s chevys. Engine was bolted down across the body behind the cab. I had to horizontal boxes stacked on the drivers side with my small fabrication and hand tools and welding rod. Leads hung off of that. On the passenger side had a bottle rack that held up to 1 acetylene, 2 k oxygens and either 75/25 or argon as needed. The rack was right behind the cab. Then a vertical box for torches with a spot for repair kits, tips etc. behind that was additional vertical cabinet with helmet and leathers as well as extension cords. Later trucks had a rod cabinet behind that. Off the back was a 3x8 sheet of open fab space. We had ladder racks with scene and emergency lighting and extra storage space in the subframe of the bed. We had an extra job box we could slide in the center against the machine for secure storage as needed.
Very informative video!! I’m currently building a skid on my truck (not for pipeline) for mobile fence and other work, posted a video of where I’m at currently, but I’m gonna use a lot of info from this video to finish it, thank you for sharing!
Austin you are the reason i went & got a sa200. Thanks for the information. I wish you would have told me to get the 250 though. But anyway you are the best man. Thanks brother.
Austin I've watched a ton of your videos and love learning from them, but at the same time i feel like your Ricky bobby in Talladega nights, "I don't know what to do with my hands right now" haha nothin but respect brother
Yeah I’d love to see what your mind has come up with for a new bed. Lol I saw one the other day that would definitely be the way I would go. It was essentially an OEM pickup bed, but cut down and plated on top to make it into a Welding bed. Had the belly boxes like yours but just looked super clean and OEM.
Coffee 😬I hope I'm not too late?!!! I appreciate your content and the insight that you give on your channel! I will never be a pipeliner but really like the industry!
Planning on building one soon! I'm a low profile guy myself but with sufficient space for tools. Black coffee is my hot drink of choice! Would taste a bit better in a industrial tradition mug 😉
I bought a 93 IDI non turbo years ago and it worked perfectly for my tractor service until I got a 6.blow and I used the old IDI as a spare . Now the Powerjoke needs another oil pump no surprise right lol. So I started using the old truck and put my Hobart on the back . I found a few issues so I'm going to cut off the bed that they put on it and do it how I like it . Also they built it super heavy for there purpose looking to make that weight into what I want . Need a 5th wheel and 2in receiver and it's a beast.
Honestly I love the idea of welding I'm training in highschool. I'll get a 2 year degree a stage 1 (I have no clue what the exact names are) it's like a hobby not only a job
I like those low profile beds and where its looks very stubby meaning shortening the bed a little, think they look pretty cool and also with a Hoosier pole!
Didn't make a bed or buy a custom made bed just got my machine in my regular bed and making my tool boxes and and I'm building a whoser pole its going going to look great when I get it all together and COFFEE is my favorite hot drink drink coffee all day
Love the video man as always. Just realized that maybe not only could these welding bed ideas be used for welding but also for other types of trade work possibly.
You can also get custom made drawers from a lot of the service body manufacturers to fit in your side boxes just like a service bed. I’m not a pipeliner or even a professional welder but I’ve been looking into building a gooseneck service body but sort of like some of the welding beds.
Hell yeah dude, show some truck bed idea sketches! I'll watch that video drinking some Irish coffee ( with Jameson, thank you!) or an old favorite winter warmer, hot chocolate with Gold Schlager Peppermint Schnapps! A couple of those you'll be working in a blizzard in a t shirt you'll be so "warm"! 😉 Keep safe and God bless!
Coffee no doubt. I wanted to ask you if you feel a lift is absolutely necessary or how often you've found yourself in situations where you said "I'm sure glad I got a lift on my truck, wouldn't have been able to get the job done without it." Thanks again, really loving the content as I'll be rigging up very soon!
Im looking into building a rig truck. Not for pipeline use but for general welding in the oddest of locations (hill country/ central Texas) Not looking to go full size or diesel. 4wd is a must though.
I would like to see your plans for your next bed. I built my bed last year and I’m absolutely happy with it. It’s very very similar to yours as you saw in that picture I emailed you it’s low profile with 4 lead wells. Ground , stinger, remote and extension cord One on other side for rods I’ve got a jack box I can fit about 7 jacks simple but I’d say slick lol. My favorite hot beverage is a Mexican drink we call “atole” is sweet and comes in different flavors Vanilla, strawberry, coconut, chocolate we pretty much drink it on cold days.
Hey Austin I've been welding for a while but it's all been fab work imside and most of it has been mig. Anyways my question is without sounding stupid but what's a Hoosier pole? My main profession was bein a painter( large equipment, semis, semi service rigs, cars, trucks)well you get the point. I'm fascinated about pipe welding I don't know alot about it. So thanks for doing this it's been fun and educational. Thanks and love y'all from KY.
I always ran my a branch of exhaust pipe up close to the oil pan on my welder with a cap that I could turn on and off that way in the winter my exhausted heated oil for my welder
Hey austin I've heard that 7018 does not need to be baked for non coded work. Is this true and if u need 7018 for a job how would u bake it on a rig or would u not bake it?
Is it a bad idea to put the welder up against the cab? Is there a reason for having the oxygen in front of the welder? I am wanting to put a welder bed on a 02 F250 crew cab short bed. I know, not ideal, but it's the truck I have right now. Thanks
I don't do pipeline so I definitely prefer service style welding bed. I bought a Texas truck with a pipe bed and had it shipped up here and was scratching my head why anyone would ever build a bed like that on purpose. Different smokes for different folks.
Seen a guy running a 12’ reading bed on a crew cab 4X4 F450. It’s basically a normal utility bed, and has a space between cab and bed dedicated to a welder and torches. So they can be accessed from the ground instead of in the bed...
Do you have any leads to get into pipelining? I’ve searched and searched and seem to get no where. Have 3 years welding experience, wouldn’t mind starting off as a helper but seems everything I find runs to a dead end!
Hey bud any bone you can throw my way i currently work in the wind farm but my goal is to land a welder helper and so on btw love your videos very educational

Hey I like your rig this my be a dumb question but have you ever seen anyone use a utility body truck for pipelining ?
Seen a guy running a 12’ reading bed on a crew cab 4X4 F450. It’s basically a normal utility bed, and has a space between cab and bed dedicated to a welder and torches. So they can be accessed from the ground instead of in the bed...
It was hella sharp too!!!
Do you have any leads to get into pipelining? I’ve searched and searched and seem to get no where. Have 3 years welding experience, wouldn’t mind starting off as a helper but seems everything I find runs to a dead end!
I’d like to see you build your new rig
What's the reason for putting the oxy tanks right behind the cab and then the welder?
Do you rent or buy your bottles? My local welding supply and other big name ones will only let me buy a 120cf and I can rent the bigger ones
Coffee!! lots of Coffee!! :)
Black rifle coffee's "Death Punch" is my favorite hot drink
Is a Lincoln electric vantage 300 a good welder for pipeline?
I was thinking of buying a box truck and use that as a camper and where it can also haul my welder
