  • Just some random snippets of my day, really...
    Starting with a wander around lovely St. Ives, a quick pop to the Tate gallery for some Barbara Hepworth sculpture, then a flying visit to Coffee & Craft Club in my village, followed by a bit more sketching at home. Nothing grand - just life!

    Virginia Woolf had a summer mansion in St. Ives, from there she wrote her masterpiece "To the lighthouse" inspired by that very lighthouse . I really hope to go and sketch it one day. Thank you for taking us with you. A hug from Italy!

      It's lovely, but I usually try and avoid it in summer because it's not so peaceful then - gets so busy!

    I love St. Ives. We often stayed there on holidays. But unfortunately it is now very overcrowed. Barbara Hepworth's garden is beautiful. I love her art. And I love your sketch. Thank you for sharing your art, Cheers, Gabi

    Loved this video! I really enjoy videos that include some “away from the art desk” footage, so you can see different areas in the world. I really like the sketch you did today… and the one in your small sketchbook from the cliffs in your village is beautiful!
    I’m the same and like to have a “play” sketchbook/pad in addition to my “good” sketchbook that I’m working in. If I’m just slapping down colours to see if they work and are mixed to the shade I want, I don’t want that in my good book. I often just tuck a couple of loose sheets of paper in my “good” sketchbook, if I don’t have room to take a notepad for playing around. Those little notepads your have are so cute!

      I guess I must always have been doing this with scraps of paper when doing art at home, but never noticed until I was away from home!

    I wouldn't call your videos disorganised, I think they are a very interesting mix of your creative day. I love watching them. I went out sketching today, and the wind was so strong I could barely stand up. I think I'm a fair weather sketcher. A shame, as it was sunny for the first time in days.

      I only just started with the outdoor stuff, and it's really quite nerve-wracking, never mind worrying about trying to make the sketch look any good! I guess it's just gradually trying to get used to it all. Thanks for your comment!

    What a beautiful place to live, Helen! I’m a city dweller in Southern California. And though we do have wonderful coastal areas, it just does not compare to the serenity you capture in your videos. I just finished watching the series Poldark and I believe it was filmed in that area. Anyways, thank you for your videos!

      Thank you! I loooove California! I've travelled the coast highway a few times, and various other places - it's beautiful! I really need to watch Poldark - I've only watched a few episodes, and that was before I moved here, but I think some was filmed in the village I live in.

    0.29..the light you hint at is the almost mystical combination of natural features only occurring in winter. When the tide is half in and half out,( ebb and flood).....and the sea is calm....and the sky is completely clear....and the low Sun is late afternoon; then the low, slanting rays of the Sun shine through sea, striking the bright sand below and reflect up, with a faint greenish light, onto the ring of bright houses facing the harbour. The light pulses along giving a golden glow effect which is striking and mesmeric.....but it must be caught just right; it doesn't last long. I lived in SI for many years and viewed this delight often...best viewed from high up, south of the town, e.g the Malakoff. Good luck!

    I remember as a teenager sketching Barbara Hepworth sculptures in her studio/garden at St Ives. I was freaked out by some guy who was watching me. It felt like every time I looked up, there he was. Looking back I’m sure he was probably just interested to see someone sketching, but it was pretty creepy at the time! Haha. My family has often been to Hayle and I love walking along that beach, towards the lighthouse and up to the Jam Pot! (I hope the jam pot is still there! What a haven on a wild weather day!).

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  Рік тому +1

      Oh that's cool! (Not the being freaked out bit!) I still need to go to the gardens! The beaches between St. Ives, Hayle and Gwithian are amazing! I haven't been to the Jam Pot either I'm afraid, but I believe it's still there. I moved here 3 years ago, so still have lots of exploring to do.
