Daniel Bryan Yup, he IS actually right, i read about it as well, i could not believe what i read lol, sadly i forgot about the big details, but all i remeber is that they left the engine blocks in the rain and out in the elements, for some reason that i forgot, and took a pee on it to make things faster.
***** it's about the way nitrates in your piss affect the iron in the block. They also only used blocks with 100,000km on them so they knew there was no issues such as porous casts.
Massive, massive boost and some ungodly race fuel, spinning at insane RPM. It is incredible what they've done - they almost have as much power per liter as a top fuel dragster engine. While the dragster engine does have to make due with pushrods, two valves per cylinder, and 8,000rpm or so, it also has the advantage of burning nitromethane, having spark plugs that fire like arc welders, and a block reinforced by putting metal where coolant usually goes (it's cooled by the fuel!) Crazy stuff.
The DNA is still there I have a new M235i and it is scarily similar to the E36 but a bit quicker only got 425 on the clock after nearly three weeks and loving it engine makes virtually he same noise too..
but U.S. version you can buy for several hundred $ EU models are a LOT more expensive. Prices start's about 13 thousand $ so... i'am jealous of your prices... But automatic transsmision in M car is an heresy for me.
Yea and the Lotus 98T with the Renault 1.5L V6 turbo motor was making 1400+HP in quali trim by the end of the season. They had to fuse the head of the engine to the block because otherwise it would blow it off. After qualifying the engines would fail and sometimes melt or explode. Couldn't run like that for more than 30 minutes or so. Race trim they still put out ~700HP though which is still amazing out of 1.5L.
@skinnbone260 Those engines were very complicated, only lasted one race weekend and I believe ran on different fuel than modern F1 cars. They didn't even make 1200hp for an entire race weekend. They could generate that sort of power for 1 or 2 qualifying laps, but during the race they had to reduce turbo boost or the engine wouldn't last the race distance.
Having owned seven BMWs so far, I yet to have an M Power model. But someday. ;) I do like the M5, the right balance between sportiness and rear seat room. I do currently have a 740iL with M5 rims. Am quite impressed with the better handling with the 9.5" width rims.
@kernals12 Petrol in Europe is rated between 95 to 98 octane as standard, plus our laws are different regards to BHP and CO2, different US states will have different laws in regards to the same item, it maybe your cars are fitted with different exhaust systems and different more restrictive catalytic converts, but most of the time the main difference is the "ECU Map" which can be changed or "altered". By doing this it should bring your BHP up. You can always contact BMW and ask why yourself'
@luedriver I agree and I am content driving my vintage 94 325i that is decent on gass and has a little bit of power when needed. I have nothing to prove, just enjoy the car for what it is, a sporty near luxury car in "loved" condition!
you are right the e60 m5 has a v10 but that was 2006-2010 the one at the end he was talking about was the new m5 in 1999 that had a new v8 instead of a straight 6
@TupacX2Pak actually the octane of our fuels is the same, we just have a different measurement system so while regular fuel is 95 octane over there, here it's 87, for premium fuel, it's 98 over there, 91 or 93 here
@W1zzar3 no... i mean supercharging my mustang... 4.6 v8. i had that thing last winter. i had to forge internals just so it could get 200 more horsepower from the supercharger. i had done a lot of other things to it. but with stock internals im saying. very little cars can handle that much power... for example, the 2az engine the the scion TCs. stock internals, you can turbo it, and get 400hp at the engine
@Tomekpsp it would last less than a race weekend... good engineered engine to handle such power... but ofcourse such a small engine could not hand all that power...
@at32degrees It's clear that they have the expertise to build a robust stock engine capable of huge horsepower IF THEY WANTED TO. Typically that isn't the case because the goal is to minimize cost and maximize efficiency. There aim is to build an engine that is only as robust as it needs to be for the intended output. There's just a difference in the goals of the two companies as well as what its customers expect them to produce. All I'm saying is Honda could if they wanted to...but they don't.
@kernals12 It's to do with emissions. In the US they had stricter laws regarding emissions so Nearly every car imported to US had to be detuned and muffled up a bit. Not as much to do with fuel but common sense 98 octane will perform better than 87 or 91 or which ever one you guys had back then.
@sketchyinc your calling a 94 vintage? guess the cars i own are downright antiques. its a shame that Beemer parts are still pricey in the US and the cars are still expensive, otherwise i'm sure we'd see alot more of them on the road. damn import costs. lol.
@b4pl When old Top Gear ended Channel Five half-inched all the old presenters (VBH, Tiff and Wilson) to create Fifth Gear. Not long later new Top Gear arrived with Clarkson and co
@mtr22b I knew this, but just cuse im a big fan. Here in Brazil we dont have BBC channel. And neither that other of Fifth Gear, channel Five is it? I mean, you are right but that 2 names (top and fifth gear) look like camed from the same producers and channel too.
Waitg did I hear him right??? A 1.5 liter 4 banger turbo with over 1000bhp????? Thats amazing! Y didn't they do that for a Bugatti and save all that weight to go even faster?!?!?!?!
@skinnbone260 I know what you mean but the logic is faulty. My point is, if Honda had the desire to build an engine that was thoroughly engineered to handle significantly more power than stock output they absolutely could. They don't because that's not their goal. It's like saying "Well Honda can't build an engine that sounds as good as a Lamborghini V-12". That may or may not be true but it's irrelevant because they aren't even trying to. They focus on affordability and fuel efficiency...
@birdman3120 replace the engine with something smaller! Don't get me wrong I love the Veyron it is a remarkable technical achievement that deserves an applause absolutely but I think it might have been executed to a higher standard than what the final project's bill suggests they spent for the Veyrons development.
@at32degrees well i mean im just saying... the 2jz can handle some serious power... and the 2.5 engine in the late 80s bmw could handle about 400+ horses i want to see a honda with stock internals do that
i think there is something wrong with car manufacters today... in early 80s, bmw had a 1.5 liter, 4 cylinder engine... it made 1200 horsepower... more than a bugatti veyron...
@at32degrees okay what about the CBR1000RR ?? vs the S1000RR they both went for performance... BMW has 20 more HP, and is almost half the weight... im just saying... germans perfect everything
@Tomekpsp hehehe im just saying tho. if you were to get honda to do that. they would not be able to engineer and engine that can last over an hour with that much power. bmw was able to engineer it... so why cant they engineer more engines like that today? im not asking 1000 hp, im asking 300+ hp in a 1500 4 cyl engine, when gas prices are so high... i have a 2.0 LNF engine making 300 hp, only problem is..... GM made.... lmao
I could watch this all day.
1200HP from a 1.5L 4 cylinder turbo, in 1983...goddamn!
Exactly what i thought! How the hell did they do that?? :-D
tigrone08 Huge turbos and one engine per race.Engines were made to produce huge hp but they couldnt last very long.
Dani Rodrigues
The big secret was that the engineers pissed on the engine blocks to make them stronger.
True story ;)
Daniel Bryan
Yup, he IS actually right, i read about it as well, i could not believe what i read lol, sadly i forgot about the big details, but all i remeber is that they left the engine blocks in the rain and out in the elements, for some reason that i forgot, and took a pee on it to make things faster.
***** it's about the way nitrates in your piss affect the iron in the block. They also only used blocks with 100,000km on them so they knew there was no issues such as porous casts.
"that perfect driving position" *hunches over*
he looks like a british version of jim carey in dumb&dumber
Must had been the bowl over the head hair cutting technique. lol

When BMWs looked good
Even in the 1980s and early 1990s, there were Clarkson jokes. Why am I not surprised?
Mr. Clarkson is from the 1960's. That's why.
Nice song and car , E30 M3 + ZZ Top = Carmusgasm
After watching this video, it makes me so proud to own my 1987 BMW 3.25is!!!
The DNA is still there I have a new M235i and it is scarily similar to the E36 but a bit quicker only got 425 on the clock after nearly three weeks and loving it engine makes virtually he same noise too..
+Karl Fontanari *the 2 series is similar size to e46 not e36 and its even bigger than e46 are u stupid to say its similar to e36 hahah*
Are you stupid for calling someone you don't even know stupid? Also, you missed his point completely.
Just picked up a 1996 USDM E36 M3 with only 52,000 original miles....LOVE IT!!!
Though I am jealous of the Euor models with the 6 speed and extra hp
Just picked up a 96 myself, this year. First thing I did was remove the traction control throttle body.
Early Euro E36 M3 IS 3.0 286 bhp 5 speed, later Evo is 3.2 321bhp 6 speed
*****
Don't talk shit! 3.0 240bhp vs 2.5 192bhp! It has better numbers than a 330i!!!
but U.S. version you can buy for several hundred $ EU models are a LOT more expensive. Prices start's about 13 thousand $ so... i'am jealous of your prices... But automatic transsmision in M car is an heresy for me.
Ahhh tracking on the VCR. That takes me back

e34 M5 for life. thats where bwm did there best work!
@skinnbone260
Those engines were very complicated, only lasted one race weekend and I believe ran on different fuel than modern F1 cars.

That was in race trim, in qualifying reportedly made up to 1600 hp but needed to be replaced after a couple of laps :)
@luedriver I agree and I am content driving my vintage 94 325i that is decent on gass and has a little bit of power when needed. I have nothing to prove, just enjoy the car for what it is, a sporty near luxury car in "loved" condition!
@pepas346
he was actually one of the original top gear presenters. the trio we have now only came in much later
@EMIR72CC He used to be on Top Gear, left the show in 2001 when Top Gear was cancelled (later brought back) and started on Fifth Gear.
you are right the e60 m5 has a v10 but that was 2006-2010 the one at the end he was talking about was the new m5 in 1999 that had a new v8 instead of a straight 6
bmw's are...like city sharks....u wont see them commin' :))
i love bmw
Then 1999 came With the Amazing and The Beautiful car ever Made
The BMW M5 E39
Fuck the M4 the M3 will always have the history and pedigree
They always make two-door M3, but it was simply called the M3 Coupe. Only in 2013 BMW decided to rename it the M4, but it's still just the same car.
@TupacX2Pak actually the octane of our fuels is the same, we just have a different measurement system so while regular fuel is 95 octane over there, here it's 87, for premium fuel, it's 98 over there, 91 or 93 here
Tiff is a great driver I like the E39 M5 myself !
@birdman3120 but other cars that are road legal don't weigh almost 6000Ibs. U can't get around the weight of a quad turbo W16 motor
@b4pl yeah but that was the racing version and they would basically cross the line then break down
1:04 Long before VTEC is even a thing! 🤯🤯
m3 e30 - such a cult icon...
@Tomekpsp it would last less than a race weekend... good engineered engine to handle such power... but ofcourse such a small engine could not hand all that power...
Tiff's voice is still breaking, 40 years on.
@at32degrees It's clear that they have the expertise to build a robust stock engine capable of huge horsepower IF THEY WANTED TO. Typically that isn't the case because the goal is to minimize cost and maximize efficiency. There aim is to build an engine that is only as robust as it needs to be for the intended output. watching old cars makes me feel good about my shitty car
Jezza I talk bollocks don't like BMW's I'm suprised to see them on old Topgear..! back when it was about car's for all types of people..!
That's why I love Old Top Gear of this era a lot.
@sketchyinc your calling a 94 vintage? guess the cars i own are downright antiques.
its a shame that Beemer parts are still pricey in the US and the cars are still expensive, otherwise i'm sure we'd see alot more of them on the road. damn import costs. lol.
@luedriver
mine came stock from the manufacturer , since its the M-chassi
Alright, ZZ Top!!
What's the dance song on the very end after Tiff signs off?
a 4 cilinder 1.2 liter turbocharged engine producing 1000 plus horsepower? HOLY CRAP!
Damn Tiff looks YOUNG!
@Qnickel27 If you can't get around the weight of the engine, then how would you suggest they should reduce the weightof the car?
i would love an x5m because you can get a trailer hook up for it so unlike your m5 i can pull a trailer and still keep up
E 34 M5... best ever
Well, I mean the coolant jackets in the block, not the radiator. Lol!
Love my Cecotto E30 M3!!
1200BHP from a 1.5 ... amazing
@LtColQwerty Yeah man I agree with you on that, the e30 was great car.
The M5 rules!
What is the episode date? Any higher quality?
M5 e39 IS DA BEAST!!!!!
Just for the record, what song is being played early on in the segment?
Best part was Tiff punching Jeremy. Oh, and the parts about the M cars.
@W1zzar3 thats what i am saying tho... forged block... im saying stock internals... very few cars can handle up to 400+ hp...
@Swissair171 Starting just after 3:00 is Filter - Trip Like I do. Is that the one you meant?
@skinnbone260 how long did the 1500cc last tho?
Unfortunately, that can't be changed since ///M's new objective nowadays is the richer people.
@b4pl When old Top Gear ended Channel Five half-inched all the old presenters (VBH, Tiff and Wilson) to create Fifth Gear. Not long later new Top Gear arrived with Clarkson and co
@Qnickel27 Because all that weight in a Bugatti is the safety stuff that a car must have to be road legal.
@mtr22b I knew this, but just cuse im a big fan. Here in Brazil we dont have BBC channel. And neither that other of Fifth Gear, channel Five is it? I mean, you are right but that 2 names (top and fifth gear) look like camed from the same producers and channel too.
What year was this program originally aired?
e34 m3 = heaven
@toprules damn, I wish someone would have told me that a week ago ...it's gone now
E30 M3 sport evo. Best M3 ever made
Waitg did I hear him right??? A 1.5 liter 4 banger turbo with over 1000bhp????? Thats amazing! Y didn't they do that for a Bugatti and save all that weight to go even faster?!?!?!?!
where the hell do these come from!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
I saw M5 badge on 316i compact :) god damn him xD
Any idea what that last song was ? Sounds popular but I can't tell. Perhaps many were like that.
I'm pretty sure it's Culture Beat - Mr Vain.
Corona - Baby Baby
Well done ! I used to listen a lot of dance music but a few years passed since then.
Crystal method - like I do
@kernals12 most likely your petrol lol, if not then it was down to the law in your state vrs co2
Thanks for posting this

BMW M Power! My favorite performance division! :-)
P/S: Anyone knows the background song between 0:18 until 1:43?
im looking at a 1999 m3 with 60k for $12k is that a good deal are these a headache to own
@birdman3120 replace the engine with something smaller! Don't get me wrong I love the Veyron it is a remarkable technical achievement that deserves an applause absolutely but I think it might have been executed to a higher standard than what the final project's bill suggests they spent for the Veyrons development.
@TheMagicalwill well how come now our BMW M cars produce the same amount of power and I believe our gas comes from the same place
@luedriver i was going to put it on my 325is till i could afford a m3... since they go for about 12-23k now D:
The sound of M5 - jizz
That deep, soft rumble.....
i love m3 is my favourit
Back when the suspension sorted out the handling and not some computer. Sigh...
@mustafa092, Tiff used to be a host in Top Gear.
I saw an E30 with the M3 badge, and it didn't have the M3 bodykit lol
Just wait, it'll be the M diesels in few years!
I did driver training in an M5
does anyone have any more stats on that 1.5L 1200HP engine how much boost was it running on 60psi+?
mind how old this video is. he talks about the E39 M5 and that had a V8 ;)
@Mercedes600SEL Well you need to check up on your Top Gear history! :-D
@at32degrees well i mean im just saying... the 2jz can handle some serious power... and the 2.5 engine in the late 80s bmw could handle about 400+ horses
i want to see a honda with stock internals do that
i think there is something wrong with car manufacters today... in early 80s, bmw had a 1.5 liter, 4 cylinder engine... it made 1200 horsepower... more than a bugatti veyron...
( 0:55 ) How do you screw 1,2000 hp out of a 1.5 liter turbo 4 cylinder...? That's what I want to know.
how come in the US, our M5 made only 310hp while you guys got 340hp?
@PunksloveTrumpys 7 series alpina steps in maybe that's why no M
@at32degrees okay what about the CBR1000RR ?? vs the S1000RR
they both went for performance... BMW has 20 more HP, and is almost half the weight... im just saying... germans perfect everything

I love the m3 e30
@johnfee33 yep that's why i own a 525 tds E34 mod 1995 :D
4 people were dropped as a baby and still think that front-wheel drive is somehow desirable...
@luedriver I saw a ///M badge on a 7 series lol
thanks i didnt know :)
