I am starting to really like 21 Pilots. I know their famous songs that were on the radio. To be a drummer takes so much stamina and energy! My 12 year old grandson has been a drummer since he was 4 (I told you that in another video), but he is exhausted after a 1/2 drum lesson! Lol

I know this is from a year ago but I’ve watched some other reaction channels that do twenty one pilots videos and here are my observations about things they’re doing to avoid copyright blocks. Different combinations may work. Blur the video; make the video transparent; reverse the video (mirror image); put a transparent logo over the video; put a non transparent logo over the video that doesn’t block the whole thing; frequently pause. I have also heard some say that they were able to appeal and sometimes get a video put back up.

  • @GarnetJ
    @GarnetJ Рік тому +23

This song is one of my favorites! Haha I loved “The drummer is so nasty, he’s basically a vocalist.” Josh is an absolute beast 😼 He and Tyler are a true team and best friends.
This song is a critique against the music industry and how much of the popular music is manufactured and heartless (soulless / without meaning or purpose) … but will they be alive tomorrow? Will their music last?
Tyler was disappointed when he found out a lot of artists don’t write their own music. And as you noted, they use music as therapy. Their music doesn’t fit within a genre. That’s intentional. And it’s what made me a huge fan, especially after seeing them live. They built their core fan base through their live shows. The energy and their connection with their fans is unreal.
As for Ode to Sleep - yes that’s another song with a lot of switch ups and tempo changes. It was the first track on their album Vessel that just celebrated its 10th anniversary. They did an anniversary livestream and Tyler did acoustic versions of all the tracks. Never thought I would ever hear an acoustic version of Ode to Sleep! But it strips everything down to the vocals, which have a lot of deep meaning. If you look at the lyrics, it describes the battle he has at night with dark voices / demons. At night is when he struggled the most with depression. In the song, he cries out to God to tell the demons that he’s insignificant so that they will leave him alone. But what’s amazing looking at those lyrics now is seeing how many lives Tyler’s music has touched. Clearly, he’s not insignificant. And he’s continued to use his gift to help and guide others who are also struggling with the darkness and mental health issues. But what’s so unique is how he packages that deep meaning into uplifting music that always keeps you on your toes. You never know what to expect with TØP, but they don’t disappoint.
So circling back to Lane Boy, which is off of their Blurryface album. They’ve stayed true to their beliefs and the craft. They felt a lot of pressure to write songs that would be radio friendly. They were almost victims of their own success, when Stressed Out and Ride were on the radio almost non-stop. As a result, many thought they were all hype and no substance, since they just listened to the catchy beat and didn’t give deeper into the lyrics. But even in those songs, there is a message and a purpose.
I’m really enjoying your TØP journey! I would recommend Holding Onto You or Fairly Local next. You’ll also love Heavydirtysoul. If you want to explore some of Tyler’s lyrical mastery, I would recommend Migraine and Addict With a Pen (the live from UG Studio version - pure raw emotion).

5:34 I agree I think that the musicians that are making a living off of their music kind of have to have some hits that the public wants after a while Tom started doing more generalized songs and people got upset but did not understand that he's a reaching a bigger audience because he's generalizing. When you make "common" music it doesn't mean it's awful it just means it's more generalized for the public. If an artist only stuck to putting out what they wanted they would like the artists of the past die broke. They want to use their art to support their families so there has to be a give-and-take.

You're right on track - this song is about the pressures they get from the industry to create radio hits - this album specifically they were told they needed hits and they came through with two mega hits that each combined about 4 billion views on UA-cam
"Will they be alive tomorrow" I think is referring to the one hit wonders who follow the trends - then people just forget about them bc their music is meaningless
If you read the lyrics to Ode to Sleep- you'll probably pick up on what he's saying - a lot of religious imagery and metaphors in the last verse

Most of the live versions are different from the album versions since they play around with different variations. I highly suggest starting with the album versions first. But “trees live at fox theater” is a must!
I would suggest doing the song “goner” by first listening to the official video but then follow it up with the live at fox theatre version.

Yes pausing helps but I think making their video almost invisible is your best shot at getting it through and we are here to see you react not watch the video because we know the videos. As long as the sound quality of the music is good and ur watching original video or original studio version if doesn’t have a video you are good.

I loved this reaction! I love watching people see what I see in them! If you ever want to switch it up and do album reactions, this band might be the one to start with. They have 4 studio albums, and while the last 2 (Scaled & Icy and Trench) have been concept albums, the themes and concepts have been in their music from the beginning.
Can't wait to see what you react to next.
Since you already did Ode to Sleep, which is the first song off their first album, Vessel, it might be smart to just continue with that album in order. The next song would be Holding on to You. There is an official music video for it. However, the live version at the Fpx Theater is even better. Could be a chance to see how they write songs for their live shows and have to convert it to an album version, which is the opposite of how most people do it.
The third song on Vessel is Migraine. A song that focuses on those heavy lyrics that you pointed out and where I think the seed of their concept albums came from. You'll understand that in due time, though!
Can't wait for the next one!
