  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Hether shares her ideas for how we can change our lives via nutrition and committing to one small change in order to watch our bodies work the way they were designed to.
Hether Crawford is an ACE Certified Personal Trainer and owner of Hether Crawford Fitness. Her commitment to health, nutrition, and fitness was born out of necessity after watching her son suffer from asthma and her daughter struggle to concentrate at school. Through simple changes to what she fed her family, Hether changed her family’s world, and fueled her passion to help others make the same changes.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

She was very clear that she wasn't an expert. She was talking about her personal life and the choices she had made to eat better and the results of those choices. I listen to a lot of qualified experts telling you what and what not to do, it was great to listen to someone's personal story of success with food and why I should do the same with my food.

I can relate. I have dealt with asthma my whole life. At the beginning of this year I began my quest to avoid processed food, and my asthma has slowly diminished. The majority of people get defensive when I try to tell them of them whats really in processed food. I think this video lays it all out crystal clear!

I think this is so important to say, especially in this time! Everywhere you look there are fast food restaurants and I know so many people addicted to caffeine from soft drinks. It is truly tearing our bodies apart and making them weak and putting our minds at a disadvantage. It is so important to learn to live that healthy lifestyle and make smart and healthy decisions with your body. In the US alone, 300,000 people are dying from obesity and if we don't stop the way we're eating and living it could get so much higher than that! I am glad we have people like Hether out there spreading the word and helping to make a difference.

My journey started with being diagnosed with hypothyroidism after 10 YEARS of suffering the symptoms. I didn't get any answers from doctors who only pushed pills on me and told me diet would not help. I did my own research. Totally changed my lifestyle to wholesome Organic foods and even household products and hygiene products. 3 months later I was cured. Now I'm in school to become a holistic practitioner and help others.

Absolutely brilliant and I could not agree more, I personally gave up animal products 48 years ago, I have never been a drinker of soft drinks or alcohol and never eaten fast food, maybe the odd bag of chips/fries but at 54 I have never been on any medication or had any illnesses or seen my doctor apart from a broken toe ( this year) I have also raised my daughter (18) with the same diet and like me she has always been healthy, So I totally back what this woman says and it's about time more people listened and took action.

It takes more effort, but I always feel better when I ditch the highly processed foods and sweets, but it's always cyclical. I fall back into my old patterns when my routine changes significantly (vacations, deaths, super busy seasons, big events). The trick is to get back on track quickly without giving into guilt or defeatism. Still a work in progress.
When I had my kids, I definitely did not want to repeat my own childhood eating habits. One of the many reasons we chose to homeschool was to raise our kids to eat well and learn to seek some balanced choices and move regularly. Now they are college age, and they seem to be making somewhat conscientious choices. They're certainly doing much better than I did at their age.

Excellent. One thing I wish stopped is us callimg ourselves "consumers". That has such a horrible negative connotation to it. We are not garbage disposals or machines....I am old enough to remember when we were called customers...not consumers....customer has a human feel...consumer has a mechanical or machine feel. I remember listening to the radio talk shows my mother used to have on in the mid 60's how the word consumer first started replacing customer and everyone called in in protest saying they resented that word as it was so demeaning to a human being. Nowmit is commonplace and nobody even thinks about it. I hope now some do. That is my food for thought...pun intended. Peace out.

Growing up our family never had fast food. Both my parents worked full time and yet somehow my mother managed to have a home cooked meal ready for us every day. She worked the evening shift as a cleaner so she would prepare our dinner and it would all be on the stove & oven. My husband had never had a salad prior to meeting me. Our diet is focused on salads every day. Even on road trips for hockey & softball we would pack the cooler with home cooked food so that we wouldn't have to rely on fast food. It all starts in our homes....you want your family to be healthy then think of your body as a fine tuned machine that you would only use high grade fuel. Garbage in garbage out.....

+Susan Owen Glaser Hey Susan, your comment got me curious on what it is as well. Apparently it stands for Technology, Entertainment, and Design, and these three elements converged in a conference in 1984. That should answer the question :) Lol.

Anecdotal "research" is always great for impact, but tends to spread undo fear and bad information; it is the case here.

the only research here is quoted from the CDC - the rest is just a personal story of how nutrition impacted the family. love your channel btw! as a personal trainer myself, I really appreciate all the info you share.

As a person with a learning disability, i find some of the video offensive. The food we eat does NOT CAUSE learning disabilities it makes them worse. We have to learn about this for school and it's not a reliable source!

While I appreciate her passion for healthy living, I resent her ignorance which should not be encouraged about brain chemistry disorders. When someone genuinely has ADHD, it is not a choice they have in the matter.

+Lux Chevis I agree. If someone has a child with ADHD, they're not a failure as a parent.

    • @jeffanderson5923
      @jeffanderson5923 8 років тому +3

+Lux Chevis. I sympathize with anyone with brain chemistry disorders. I do recall in the video someone from her school asked if she would test to see if her child has ADHD, She also mentioned that rates of ADHD diagnosis increased 5% per year from 2003 to 2011. She then brought up how changes in our food supply coincide with the increase of ADHD diagnosis. I don't think anyone will ever say do this and all problems including ADHD will go away. However, I think for many children who have problems, whether it is allergies, asthma, hyperactivity, ADHD etc etc etc. If they eliminate food dyes, preservatives, GMO's, gluten, chemicals etc and eat more organic foods including greens and vegetables there is a high probability that the problems the children have will improve. That's what I got out of her message, and it also is what I believe is true. I've seen lots of examples and heard of many more. My niece told me her daughter was pretty naughty whenever she ate treats with food dyes (like M&M's) she has stopped her from having treats like that and anything with food dyes and she is a very well behaved child now. My wife is a teacher and she sees how children who have snacks that are junk food act much worse then prior to having their snack. I used to eat unhealthy and have changed up my eating habits and I feel so much better, My weight is much better, everything has improved.

+Lux Chevis The studies of ADHD are so new relative to other conditions that it is impossible to say definitively that food does or does not have an effect, remembering that correlation is not causation. On a personal level I have adult ADHD and had it as a kid and my son also has ADHD. I can say not scientifically but from observation that when I eat a real food diet and avoiding processed foods my attention is much better and my sense of foggy brain are better. I suspect in time science will confirm some of this.

The point I resent and what I don't like that she insinuates is that the wrong diet *causes* ADHD, which as you know, couldn't be further from the truth.

    • @kahuweber4409

+Lux Chevis ADHD is made up by the pharma industry to give kids medication (ritalin) go check it up the "inventor" of ADHD actually confessed its made up. so what is the problem with the kids then ? don`t get me wrong i was diagnosed with that crap and i am sure it was partly the schoolsystem i could not agree with and another part was my bad diet. i was eating too many sugars as a kid, and i think alot can be done by fixing the diet and probably with more body activities at school.
