Thanks for responses. I was on staff when i wrote and produced this at Sega of America. S2 was done in Japan so most of my music was only on SOA titles. We over wrote for most projects. I will post more unreleased tracks from my Genesis demos in coming days.
What exactly was the intended purpose for these tracks? Were they meant to be place holders? Were they meant to be used in the game before Nakamura took over? Or were they intended to be used alongside his music? Thank you.
So many questions.... Team Sonic did relocate to SOA at one point when they were still STI (Sega Technical Institute). Can't remember if S2 was SOJ or SOA, but S3 definitely was because Michael Jackson toured our studios! (a story for another time!). My music reel/demo cart was a custom job by DTS engineer Ken Chao. He built the shell and I provided my Genesis/GEMS files. ROM image must be long gone by now... :( but at least I have the cart! Capturing more soon...
Hey, just a note: if your cartridge is still able to boot on a Genesis console, you can extract the data from it fairly easily, and recover the ROM image from it! I haven't seen a picture of the cartridge board itself, so there's no telling how complicated it might be, but chances are your cartridge is fairly simple engineering-wise, containing an EEPROM chip with the compiled program on it. You might want to have this done professionally for your own backup, even if you don't plan on sharing the data online, because bit-rot does happen to EEPROM and PROM chips over time.

Sonic 2 CD was basically an early Sonic 2, with a linear time travel plot. i.e. You don't actively time travel like in CD, but it'd serve as a level transition. It would've involved exploring various zones in Westside Island in the present, a bad present, a bad future, and the past. e.g. Emerald Hill, Dust Hill, Chemical Plant, and Hilltop were all gonna represent the same zone across 4 time periods. Eventually, Sonic would've entered a zone in the past called Olympus (Hidden Palace?), where he likely would've gained his super form. The game was still in a pretty early state when they came up with that, so most of it likely wasn't implemented when they decided to split it into two projects.
Thank you for sharing this! I didn't know these tracks exist. They might think that these are not fitting to the Sonic games, but they are still good and mystic tracks for Genesis era. Loved them.

My theory for this is that this could’ve been a cutscene when transitioning from casino night to hilltop, or mystic cave depending on the zone order, since it says club scene it most likely could’ve been related the casino night. It could’ve also been after sonic defeats the casino night boss and chases him down.

Also, listening to this one again, it almost sounds like it could've worked in a haunted house-type level. I read online that Mystic Cave was going to be a sort of haunted house-type stage, and that it basically evolved from Mountain Madness (either that, or aspects of Mountain Madness were re-used for what would become Mystic Cave). In fact, if you listen to this song and Mystic Cave's music, they're both in the same key and they both have sort of a "spooky" vibe. This music could've matched up nicely with the original Mountain Madness Zone concept.
I think the "Club Scene" could've been used for a cutscene that would play before Sonic went to casino night I guess? It was probably scrapped due to size limitations if that was the case. The second, more logical reason could be just a song used for testing the Mega Drive sound chip.
