i used to listen to Lana del Rey in my teenage years, Now after a few years I come back again when I feel lost , I found a piece of my soul in her songs
Honestly, those who watched and listened to Lana del Rey's shades of cool, need to go see this video!! It shows how deeply related this song is to the visuals, considering the film is inspired by the relationship Lana had with Barrie: ua-cam.com/video/nSC4ptU79-8/v-deo.html
What's weird is that whenever I play this song among other Lana songs. Everybody says they sound sad. I don't think this song sounds sad. I think it's a sexy dreamy intoxicating sound.
God I love revisiting this song. Especially late at night, it feels more dreamy and elusive. Uv will forever be a favorite album, and I disagree when people say she’s topped it since it came out. This album changed the music industry after born to die. She created her own genre it seems. Her music will always feel personal no matter what form. But this album will always be where the feeling all starts.
@Lucem awesome...thanks.....i never thought about the challenge angle ....women are so like that always being attracted to guys that need repair.....and over looking well adjusted guys
no one needs a grammy. Depeche Mode never got one, for example. and only one brit award. why? Noel Gallagher explained it very well about the lifetime achievement brit award that Oasis got: "If someone deserves this award, it's definitely Depeche Mode. but it won't happen cause they're not an major record company."
Lana del Rey deserves to be praised. In my opinion, she could handle the heavy burden of carrying our stories as millennials, this broken generation that went through a lot in a world that just won't stop giving us a break. There's no one but Lana who trailblazed a path for younger artists to be brave and presents stories that don't necessarily fit in the box of "standard love". You'll find stories of death, depression, love, atypical relationships, abuse and etc. within the folds of Lana's lyrical contents. Had it not been inspired by what she does, I would have never been able to put out an award winning film out there, inspired by her song "California", talking about how she navigating through Barrie's depression. This is not about a young Woman dating an Older guy, this is about an Old man remembering what could have being the love of his life that die young. Lana is a Ghost that he sees everywhere. Prove? At min 3:39 the guy makes the cross sing when he sees her pass in front of him swimming. He grew old sad and lonely. Maybe wanting someone new but couldn't find anyone like her.
oh, thats an interesting way to see the video, makes sense but im not 100% sure thats the meaning. at some point i thought it was another lolita video, and thought all ultraviolence videos were gonna be attached.
In many of her songs she says that she likes old men, it's not a secret (Cola refference). So, i think there is no special meaning behind this video. It's well known that Lana likes or at least she liked to have fun with rich, old men. Search through her songs and you'll understand.
For me this song is about loving a person despite their cold personality. Here Lana is constantly pointing out how aloof and detach her ‘baby’ is, but despite this she’s in love with him and tries to change him (even though she can’t). She loves him despite his love of drugs, women, and his ‘strange weather’ (unpredictability). From the first verse, we can already tell that Lana’s ‘baby’ is a typical old Hollywood bad boy because he has the ‘blue eyes’ (cold gaze), ‘jazz’ (charisma), and ‘attitude’. She also points out that ‘he lives in California too’, assumably because there might’ve been loads of boys like him in California. But at the end at the verse even though this boy ‘lives for love’ (is a womanizer/sleeps around) and is also a drug addict, he still loves his ‘baby’ (Lana). In the pre-chorus, Lana mentions her frustration of not being able to ‘help’ her significant other and having the inability to ‘make him better’, this might be because of the boy’s ‘strange weather’ that she mentions at the end of the pre-chorus. Having a strange weather could mean having mood swings or constantly changing one’s desires and beliefs. In the chorus, she also mentions how being in a relationship with this person saddens her deeply because not only he is ‘unfixable’ (doesn’t want to change his ways), but she ‘can't break through’ his ‘world’, that could possibly mean despite her attempts of trying to understand him, she always ends up feeling lost because this ‘baby’ of hers lives in ‘shades of cool’ (his own world). Lana also says that her boy’s heart is unbreakable, this might be because he seems so detached and aloof, she feels as though he wouldn’t care if she leaves him or not. In the second verse, Lana further describes her ‘baby’. Not only does he live in his own world but he’s also has a cold heart (he’s detached, cold hands (he can be physical), and cold aptitude (he tends to be aloof in general). Now Lana is more pessimistic as she mentions how her boy lives for love (sex) and women, and how she just ‘one of many’, and the most shockingly of her boy’s lover’s is ‘blue’ (dead), Lana might’ve added this one bit to exaggerate how meaningless it is to be her boy’s girl because they’re all easily discarded and forgotten. Despite all this, Lana still believes that she’s special to her boy because the boy only ‘calls’ for her when he ‘calls’, this could be Lana’s way of saying that the boy only longs for her and thinks about her despite having many lovers. Lana also believes that he’s a good person inside because she mentions how the boy prays for ‘peace’ and ‘love’, but then Lana discreetly adds ‘and maybe someone new’, this could be her way of hinting the fact that she doesn’t feel secure in the relationship because she feels as though her ‘baby’ might find her replacement one day. Despite her beliefs of being his special ‘baby’, she also realizes that she might not be special to him for long because of his changeable nature. In the bridge, Lana frustratedly sings of her boy’s hot weather (bad temper) in the summer and how even though he’s hot, he’s also a ‘neglectful lover’. But then she talks of how he’s ‘sadly crumbling’, this could mean that even though Lana still doesn’t understand him, she slowly notices his patterns and realize that there’s a reason behind his coldness, and he doesn’t even realize that Lana notices this. In conclusion, I think that this is a heartfelt song that resonates with a lot of people who’s in a relationship with a toxic person, is emotionally attached to said person, and wants them to change despite how seemingly impossible it is. This song really explores the feelings of insecurity and uncertainty of being with someone who lives in their own world and doesn’t want to change. Word of advice: always follow your heart but think about yourself and your well-being because you ARE important.

I'm a nerd so I can say: check out Björk, Kim Novak, Gunnel Lindblom and Liv Ullmann at the peak of their beauty. now that's the most beautiful women I've ever seen.
I love that Lana´s platonic love in her videos aren´t normally beautiful hollywood guys. They are realistic people, sometimes older than her, sometimes from the same gender, or sometimes just not attractive in an orthodox way, and the video doesn´t have to change because of that. I wish more artist would send this type of messages to their fans.
Art always sends a message. Whether it is what it is, it stands for something else, if it's just meant to never be understood, or maybe just to convey the artists feelings. Or maybe the artist was just bored. A world where art means nothing is not one I'd like to live in.
It sucks how she doesn't get enough credit but all these other wack artists do instead. But I guess its a good thing to keep it that way so she won't get over rated 😍
This is my fav song from Lana. So hypnotic, sad, lustful and tragic. It packs such a punch for me still in 2024. The soaring chorus is just mesmerizing
This, for me, is one of her best songs. The musicality, the melody, the story and depth and her orgasmic voice. Listening to this song takes me into another world. Most people say Lana’s song are depressive, but if all you can feel is depression from her songs then you don’t really understand her music and art at all. I thank the universe for the work of art you gave us Lana. XOXO
Yes, in the beginning I only listen to a few of her songs and then I got addicted ! Her songs play in my head all day. And I love that about her music it just leaves you wanting more and more
Yeah, I don’t think her music is depressive at all. To me it’s all about introspection. Just because it’s not bubbly and upbeat doesn’t automatically make it “depressive”.
Oh god, I know right? her voice, her music, her face, her body, her vibe is so touching on another level. She's just so ETHEREAL. She gives me life, she's a fresh breath of air.
For those who don’t understand the bridge (3:48) Your hot, hot weather in the summer Hot, hot, neglectful lover Hot, hot weather in the summer Hot, neglectful lover You’re crumbling, sadly You're sadly crumbling
When u realise this video is the continuation of the born to die music video and the old man is The man from the video but Lana's soul still haunts him even when he is old.
I think that lana changed the roles because she had an ex-boyfriend who died and now she's being his ex-boyfriend and lana being the man who sees the soul
3:47 "Your hot, hot weather in the summer. Hot, hot neglectful lover. Hot, hot weather in the summer. Hot, neglectful lover. You're crumbling, sadly. You're crumbling." favorite part, Lana is truly an artist.
I I didn’t know that existed..... I thought she said your heart twice but WOW!!! She is just amazing and does anyone else noticed that the very end of the video is backwards for some reason
I kinda think the old man is actually the boyfriend played by Bradley Soileau from Born To Die, Blue Jeans, etc. She died in the car crash in Born To Die and became a ghost that keeps haunting him for the rest of his life.
This song feels like the first time it hits you and you figure it all out: it never was a me problem. It was never me, cause your heart is unbreakable. You just live in shades of cool. Profound work Elizabeth, sorry for missing out on ya.
So beautiful, heartbreaking, sad, joyous, rapturous, soul piercing and hauntingly gorgeous all at the same time. She has an immeasurable genuineness and depth in her voice
My theory: As many of the comments have said, I do believe that Lana's character died when she and the man were young and her spirit follows him around. However I also think that the character of the old man in this video is the same guy from her video Born To Die because at the end of that video her lover is holding her dead body after he caused the car to crash and they were both pretty young when this happened. About in their 20s. And the way she acts around the older man and holds him at the end of this video after she dances with him could be a parallel to the born to die video. Also, at 3:06 you can see an American flag waving in the background, which could be a parallel to the other video as well. Idk that's just what I think, haha! But either way our queen slays in both songs, and ,well, every song. Her music and vids are a beautiful piece of art. Let me know your thoughts on the theory, bye! Edit: Also, I saw some of y’alls replies that the Blue Jeans video could be connected as well because the same guy drowns her at the end of the video and in this video we see what might be a parallel to that when she swims in the pool. I agree with this, especially since he looks distressed and shocked when she comes out of the pool! And one of y’all also said she says she will love him till the end of time in Blue Jeans and her haunting him proves that she did, which I think is a cool detail. I really like what we’re putting together here, it’s interesting 🙃
Around 4 years ago this song and the whole album changed my life, I even learned every song from the album on guitar. Now Lana is this only artist I listen to all day, everyday.I’m so glad she’s alive in my lifetime and I can’t wait to see her irl. Iv never stand anybody b4 lana, I even buy all the Murch and everything else she puts out, she just has a way with me. I LOVE lana and I love ultraviolance. I’m my heart it will forever be the best album and this will forever be the best song on it. Thank you Lana u fixed me!
After getting Lust For Life upon it's release I've been doing a Lana Del Rey discography listen. I can't get enough of her. Like most artists who fall into being ruined by being in the charts Lana Del Rey in EVERY! Single album still stays true to herself and to her fans. SHE'S BLOODY AMAZING!!!! Her voice is so dreamy, captivating, haunting, dark, perfect and so much MORE! She can sing live and she never fails to deliver. Talent that never goes wasted. Not to forget she is incredibly gorgeous and such an incredible human being.👌🏻
I never realized before but I think she's a ghost in this video, the way it's edited makes it feel like shes haunting the man. Kind of feel like as if she was part of his life when they were young but she died at a young age and the memory of her kept haunting him and following him until his old age
Lana's songs remind me of a timeless oldie playing on a phonograph in the middle of a calm, quiet, cool breeze, and peaceful starry night with your love. Her music is definitely a time machine.
All the people saying "Eww OMG why is she with hat old man that's so gross omfg" He's supposed to be. The story of the video is that they used to be lovers but lana died while they were still young, now at an older age he begins to see her everywhere he goes
It was obvious because in West coast there are two guys his younger version and old, it looks like an other lolita story first but you can understand the story from her hologram spinning lol and also she says your hell and other things
Dave Kos The video has images of a gun being shot with falling bullets and her face in the background, and he makes the sign of the cross when he sees her swimming.
That's interesting. If that's it then it would explain how he looks sad seeing her. I love how her songs can be translated to so many stories depending on how the person reads the lyrics you know? Btw where did you here about the song being about that?
I don't get why Lana isn't as populair as you expect her to be. How can you not like her salty voice and a glorious look at old Hollywood and night club music from the 50s and 60's. All dippen in a new sound that's modern and still reminds you of the old days, the femme fatale. I only wonder if she can sing this song as well live as she does here.
+Bob Carter She is populair, but not by a certain type, like Taylor Swift or Justin Bieber (jak). She has a kind of style that can work, but her genre is not easy to sell to one big group, like Taylor or Justin Bieber is for teens. Her songs can be for several ages, but that's also the problem. A lot of her songs have lyrics that sound a bit childish for a 40 yr old and visa versa with songs that may not attrack the teens that much. Does this make sense. Hard to explain., coz I don't get it either. I love most of her songs, but not all of them and mostly because of the lyrics about drugs, coz it doesn't make any sense. I think that's it, some of her lyrics are too juvenile and others are very mature. That can mean why she doesn't sell enough records or isn't more populair in the charts. Long story for a short answer, lol.😆 ✌ I read she sang good live and Im glad, coz ppl kept saying she couldn't sing, maybe she didn't have the right aquitment( ?) in those days..... favorite song (at the moment) The Blackest Day, I think. Hard to choose, almost all her songs have something I like... 😉 ✌
+DiamondWolf The mainstream music has a few good artists, but I must admit that these days a lot is crap they put out, esp those D.J. collabs. A lot of music for teens ofcause and a few good, original artists and some from.other countries, but most is often not my kind of music and I like a lot of genres, almost every decade had some great artists, from the 50s, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's till now and a lot of them are dead or old or just no longer perform and some are. Glad I was raised in a household with all sorts of music, plus after that through a boyfriend but also from strangers and good friends to ofcause Internet and the radio and tv itself. That's a lot of music I collected over the years...
This is my favourite song of hers by far. Not only does she show off her higher range but the tone of the song is a perfect mix of psychedelia and jazz/blues, two of her BEST genres.
Man even after all these years, at 4:30 my jaw drops and I take a gasp and with that chilling, high pitch "Yoooooouuuuuuu" as she climbs out of the pool, it's still so damn breath-taking just wow!
Davi Spectre, Shades Of Cool screams James Bond, Radiohead did a full song for it also and got the shaft for Sam Smith!!! WTF.....Radiohead released the MP3 to fans for free.
Describing her music as “sad” is wrong, it’s more like craving to go far back in time and maybe wanting to fix something or someone. To me that’s a feeling that replaces the word sad
lyrics : My baby lives in shades of blue Blue eyes and jazz and attitude He lives in California too He drives a Chevy Malibu And when he calls He calls for me, not for you He lives for love, he loves his drugs He loves his baby too But I can't fix him, can't make him better And I can't do nothing about his strange weather But you are invincible I can't break through your world 'Cause you live in shades of cool Your heart is unbreakable My baby lives in shades of cool Blue heart and hands and aptitude He lives for love, for women, too I'm one of many, one is blue And when he calls He calls for me, not for you He prays for love, he prays for peace And maybe someone new But I can't help him, can't make him better And I can't do nothing about his strange weather 'Cause you are invincible I can't break through your world 'Cause you live in shades of cool Your heart is unbreakable You are invincible I can't break through your world 'Cause you live in shades of cool Your heart is unbreakable
I will never get over that scene where she gets out of the pool. SHE'S LIKE A VISION. SO BEAUTIFUL. I can't even describe it. That expression in her eyes... omg.

This album changed the music industry after born to die. She created her own genre it seems. Her music will always feel personal no matter what form. But this album will always be where the feeling all starts.
Got to love her voice, her spirit and style. A modern day lounge singer. Lana is a Queen.

This video is sad because it’s about an older man who lost the love of his life when they were young and he keeps seeing her ghost everywhere.

My baby lives in shades of blue
Blue eyes and jazz and attitude
He lives in California too
He drives a Chevy Malibu
And when he calls
He calls for me and not for you
He lives for love, he loves his drugs
He loves his baby too
But I can't fix him, can't make him better
And I can't do nothing about this strange weather
But you are unfixable
I can't break through your world
'Cause you live in shades of cool
Your heart is unbreakable
My baby lives in shades of cool
Cool heart, and hands and aptitude
He lives for love, for women, too
I'm one of many, one is blue
And when he calls
He calls for me and not for you
He prays for love, he prays for peace
And maybe someone new
But I can't help him, can't make him better
And I can't do nothing about his strange weather

This is not about a young Woman dating an Older guy, this is about an Old man remembering what could have being the love of his life that die young. Lana is a Ghost that he sees everywhere. Prove? At min 3:39 the guy makes the cross sing when he sees her pass in front of him swimming.
He grew old sad and lonely. Maybe wanting someone new but couldn't find anyone like her.
oh, thats an interesting way to see the video, makes sense but im not 100% sure thats the meaning. at some point i thought it was another lolita video, and thought all ultraviolence videos were gonna be attached.
Very interesting. Kind of like "Lolita" how Humbert couldn't get over the girl that he loved as a young boy.
I was thinking the same thing just because he makes the cross
In many of her songs she says that she likes old men, it's not a secret (Cola refference). So, i think there is no special meaning behind this video. It's well known that Lana likes or at least she liked to have fun with rich, old men. Search through her songs and you'll understand.
I love ur interpretation!

My favourite part of the video
Humans dont deserve this level of divinity.
Wow love this interpretation
Patiently waiting for your award... This is amazing 😊

So true!
Her real fiancée is her age
+Tanisha Monroe Yeah, but that has nothing to do with her videos.
Why should artist's send messages? They should just make art.
Art always sends a message.
Whether it is what it is, it stands for something else, if it's just meant to never be understood, or maybe just to convey the artists feelings. Or maybe the artist was just bored.
A world where art means nothing is not one I'd like to live in.

My theory:
As many of the comments have said, I do believe that Lana's character died when she and the man were young and her spirit follows him around.

I never realized before but I think she's a ghost in this video, the way it's edited makes it feel like shes haunting the man. Kind of feel like as if she was part of his life when they were young but she died at a young age and the memory of her kept haunting him and following him until his old age
Yep, you're right
Honestly I thought the same...because this older guy kind of looks like from Born to die...the younger one..
Well since every other comment says this, it's pretty obvious you didn't think of this yourself. Its fine we already know what it's about
*sips tea and adjusts peruke*
the meaning tho (and neglectful love part prove it.)
Lana's songs remind me of a timeless oldie playing on a phonograph in the middle of a calm, quiet, cool breeze, and peaceful starry night with your love. Her music is definitely a time machine.
All the people saying
"Eww OMG why is she with hat old man that's so gross omfg"
He's supposed to be.
The story of the video is that they used to be lovers but lana died while they were still young, now at an older age he begins to see her everywhere he goes
I'm usually pretty good at putting these things together, but i was confused by this one! Thank you😊
It was obvious because in West coast there are two guys his younger version and old, it looks like an other lolita story first but you can understand the story from her hologram spinning lol and also she says your hell and other things
Dave Kos hologram lana :D he gets old when lana dives in waves in west coast video clip
Dave Kos
The video has images of a gun being shot with falling bullets and her face in the background, and he makes the sign of the cross when he sees her swimming.
>41 million views
>not popular
I saw her live and I couldn't even tell the difference
Long story for a short answer, lol.😆 ✌
I read she sang good live and Im glad, coz ppl kept saying she couldn't sing, maybe she didn't have the right aquitment( ?) in those days..... favorite song (at the moment) The Blackest Day, I think. Hard to choose, almost all her songs have something I like... 😉 ✌
Monique Geritz well that's that she's popular that's all I need
Doesn't matter how old this album gets, I'll always come back to listen. It'll always take me back in time. It's just perfect.
This is my favourite song of hers by far. Not only does she show off her higher range but the tone of the song is a perfect mix of psychedelia and jazz/blues, two of her BEST genres.

it isnt alive it isn't an organism it's an inanimate object
Goosebumps attack when she hits THAT note 🥶
Omg first time i ever heard this... wow
unpopular opinion: ultraviolence is her best album
that definitely isn’t unpopular
NFR is amazing but I agree with you, this album has been my favorite of hers so far.
EXACTLY
Born to die, Paradise edition, ultraviolence and Lust for life are her best albums
@@vpa4705 and norman
3:47 probably the best instrumental bridge I’ve ever heard omg
HOW was she not approached to do a JAMES BOND theme song!!?!?!?!!?
She was, I heared that 24 from Honeymoon had to be on some kind of Bond movie
It people said that 24 had to be on a JB film 'cause this song is a typical 007 song, not because Lana was approached by Sony or anything...
Wait, but what Bond movie are you talking 'bout? Skyfall or Spectre?
Davi Spectre, Shades Of Cool screams James Bond, Radiohead did a full song for it also and got the shaft for Sam Smith!!! WTF.....Radiohead released the MP3 to fans for free.
Man, that Sam Smith song was total bs, didn't have anything to do with 007...
Describing her music as “sad” is wrong, it’s more like craving to go far back in time and maybe wanting to fix something or someone. To me that’s a feeling that replaces the word sad
Nostalgia 😊
Exactly. Her vision is not sadness but longing. All her songs are religious in this sense.
People be denying about sadness much. When sadness is actually a beautiful feeling.
Yess
It repairs the soul like a blues
lyrics :
My baby lives in shades of blue
Blue eyes and jazz and attitude
He lives in California too
He drives a Chevy Malibu
And when he calls
He calls for me, not for you
He lives for love, he loves his drugs
He loves his baby too
But I can't fix him, can't make him better
And I can't do nothing about his strange weather
But you are invincible
I can't break through your world
'Cause you live in shades of cool
Your heart is unbreakable
My baby lives in shades of cool
Blue heart and hands and aptitude
He lives for love, for women, too
I'm one of many, one is blue
And when he calls
He calls for me, not for you
He prays for love, he prays for peace
And maybe someone new
But I can't help him, can't make him better
And I can't do nothing about his strange weather
'Cause you are invincible
I can't break through your world
'Cause you live in shades of cool
Your heart is unbreakable
You are invincible
I can't break through your world
'Cause you live in shades of cool
Your heart is unbreakable
It's "unfixable", not invincible. Think deeply about the song's meaning?
thanks, but it’s “unfixable”
Pretty awesome!🤓
@@FLMan_79 invincible is equally apt when it comes to the two people this song could be about. Oddly one has since proven that they weren't; -(
Thank you!
3:47 this is probably one of the best instrumental bridges I’ve ever heard
I will never get over that scene where she gets out of the pool. SHE'S LIKE A VISION. SO BEAUTIFUL. I can't even describe it. That expression in her eyes... omg.
No doubt she's the most beautiful woman in the singing industry.
THIS WOMAN IS A GODDESS
She is gorgeous.💛
She's not.
