there’s a difference between romanticizing and portraying. she’s not saying it’s good to be in an abusive relationship, she’s singing from the point of view of a woman who is trapped in one and in deep denial, which resonates with many.

She's not glamorizing abuse, she's just trying to explain to us how a woman in love with an abusive person feels: she tries to justify every form of abuse as if it was her fault or a love proof. This song is so much deeper than everybody thinks. And whether she's talking about physical or psychological violence, she's not glamorizing it, just showing the point of view of a manipulated woman by a toxic man. "He hit me and it felt like a kiss..." Love that line. For me, this song demonstrates beautifully what it's like to be in love with someone who abuses you. From the outside, no one can even come close to understanding why in the world you would stay with someone who harms you. Like anything else, love can be very addicting, and even the ups and downs, the highs and lows of a toxic relationship can be intoxicating, like a chemical rush of adrenaline, fear, love, lust, and sadness. There is something very strange and unique about this particular human behavior. It is completely beyond any rationale, and even though you don't like being hurt, you don't like being mistreated, it is very easy to get caught up in the desire to fix the person and save the relationship. Your own behavior is reinforced every time you do something "right" and the abuser rewards you with affection and praise, or compensates for the latest abusive incident by showering you with the love that you want most. Once you see that they are capable of being loving, it's so easy to get trapped by the idea that you can somehow "make" them treat you with respect indefinitely. This is what people don't understand about victims of abuse. Not only are they afraid of leaving the person, they are actually addicted to the relationship because they feel that they NEED that person in order to feel whole.
this was literally why I cried the instant I first heard this song, the day it came out. I was actually at the airport, it released, and I listened to ultraviolence before even checking anything else because a clockwork orange is one of my favorite all-time novels/movies. the very first verse and chorus poured tears down my eyes, ironically the first time in a while I had gone to the airport without makeup, because my first love was my abuser and we 'dated' for the first time when we were preteens, basically "reminded me of when we were kids", you know. I could go on and on what each lyric relates intensely to me and my past relationship that took 8 on and off years to get out of, but regardless this song had me ON THE metaphorical (and literal a lot of the time tbh) FLOOR and still takes my breath away over that line "he hit me and it felt like a kiss." I will never get over it, and the whole UV era fulfilled my own aesthetic and one of my favorite forms of Lana. I will forever feel blessed by this song and album, and I couldn't have said it (the significance you stated in your comment) better myself. thank you.
Lana Del Rey perfectly embodies the innocent, misguided, lost and abused American youth; abused by ideology, envy and greed. I feel like that's the origin of her hauntingly beautifully sound, that pain.
joemcbee that's because they're androids made of flesh and bone. only 2% of humans born since 1995 and forward have a personality. the rest are just wheels in a brainwashing machinery ruled by their master: technology. this is horrible and sad to say but it's actually true.
@@TaraTheAndroid technology really is a huge part of why people have become so disconnected. On top of that, the 'progressive' goal is destroying the traditional family unit, by promoting single mother families, marginalizing the importance the role of fathers in the family. They really are a product of their environment. There are easy to see examples in the comments for this video. things talking about 'having a mental breakdown eating sugar' trying to sound legit in order to get likes. I rarely see any honest thoughts from anyone. But they dont know any better. Maybe it's just a phase kids will grow out of as they mature. Either way people need to start putting down the phones and reconnect with the people in their lives. Your parents aren't going to live forever. In 50 years are you going to regret not posting enough on Instagram, or developing strong lasting relationships with your friends and family? Tangent over haha
people just don't understand the lyrics of this song. She's not romanticizing anything, she's singing about the point of view of a victim of abuse. There's so much behind her lyrics and this song represents it so well. Love this masterpiece
Exactly !! This is actually quite important to talk about because a lot of times people blame women for the abuse done to them or downplay it because they don’t leave their abuser, but it’s so much complicated than that. The brain of an abused woman doesn’t see things like she would have done it before she was in that abusive relationship
@@Moonsong_ it’s not just that also if the victim believes she loves him that turns into a trauma bond and she feels like it’s better to be in that abusive situation than the feeling of being without that person even if that abuse is truly destroying her. That’s why you should never truly get mad and leave alone a victim of abuse you have to make her realize that there’s a world outside of that relationship. Because the abuser also will do everything to isolate her and control her so she sees him as her whole reality and life and that way the trauma attachment gets stronger
Or maybe thats her artistic thing, her gloomy doomy american gothic part of women that feminists can't accept nowadays. If you leave to feminists pulp and american gothic will cease to exist.
People who say that she’s “glamorizing” abuse have never been in an abuse relationship. That’s why don’t know how blind can make you, they don’t feel what you feel. They judge because they don’t understand it. She’s not normalizing it, she’s just singing about how it feels to be in an abusive relationship. Period.
@@Jami-kj4fm she can only show her own perspective, if she never been abused then she should not have wrote this, if SHE felt this way then ok, but I can tell you most victims do NOT feel like this. Abuse is scary, you feel trapped, you feel small, you feel embarrassed! You think the person hurting you loves you, and is just unable to control their rage, or you did something to provoke them! No way does it feel like love, good, or like a kiss, it BREAKS your spirit. PERIOD
for me, this song isn't glamorizing abuse. it takes us into the mind of someone in an abusive relationship. when you're in a codependent, abusive (emotional or physical) relationship you don't see what other people are seeing. you just know you love the person and you can't afford to lose them, love means pain and you're ready to receive every blow just so that person stays. i've been there. it's painful to leave and heal but more painful to stay. this song is deep and real but it's difficult to understand when you haven't lived it.
Fr when I made my playlist of her songs I just went through lyric videos adding them without listening to the whole song Just one second and I knew And finally listened to every song after finishing the playlist all songs were bomb
I used to be in a toxic relationship when this song came out and it made me cry every time I listened to it. This song is not glamorizing abusive relationships, it's genuinely sad and deep. I ran away from that toxic environment and one of the persons I have to thank is Lana.
Lily. Genuinely sad & deep. Exactly ! Lana brings honesty whether people want to hear it or not. How it's perceived is irrelevant. She's courageous. Life's like mother nature. Turn on u in the blink of an eye. Mame. Hurt. Even kill you indiscriminately. Don't have feelings like us. I love Lana's writing talents!! Good for u relating to her song & saving yourself.
@@obeydastrawberry8875 why would anyone think it's good to be in an abusive relationship? after that abusive partner I learned to defend myself and set boundaries, I wouldn't forgive and forget their terrible wrong doings ( like cheating or ignoring and hurting me ) like I used to do before. He did hit me but it did not felt like a kiss and I do not look pretty when I cry.
I get why she's mad. She's out here writing her own songs and they sound straight up like poetry, but instead people who are singing generic pop songs with no significant meaning written by someone else are winning. This is art, and some of the other artist that won are legit just mass producing cheap music made for drunk people in night clubs. Not all of them, but many.
Lana has lots of success too and a solid ride or die fanbase. And she gets to live a more private life than these ultra famous celebrities. I understand the frustration because the critics and mainstream public were totally unfair to her during the Born to Die era and the subsequent albums too, but in terms of success and fanbase, I think she's doing alright. Her music is amazing but is not for the masses and that's alright.
Let's be honest, this song alone deserved a Grammy, let alone the whole album. Critics are saying that she's mad that she didn't get a Grammy but the women she named in her post did. Even if it was her intention, it's cool. Anyone who has worked hard would feel this way. Some stupid people are just taking it the wrong way. I'm not a huge fan of Lana but i appreciate good music when I hear it. And who tf takes Grammy's seriously now ? Trashy artists have been winning.
agreed. and they said she 'glamorizes abuse' but she's just singing about her experiences. Anyway lana >>>>all the artists she mentioned, so even if she was calling them out, she wasn't wrong. They're nowhere near her level.
right? Cardi b got a grammy before Lana it's ridiculous. If she's mad at that she has any fking right to be and that shows how trash these awards shows can be
As the daughter of a woman who suffered domestic violence at the hands of my father for 22 years of her life, i dont get why Lana is accused of glamorizing violence; if you’ve ever known someone thats in an abusive relationship but refuses to leave because they “love” their abusive partner, ultraviolence’s lyrics actually do make sense given that the song is a traumatized woman’s permanent state of mind just put into words and music.
Many will say you were born at the wrong time. I would say that you came at the right time for us who are tired of manufactured and emotionless mainstream crap. You are kind of a saviour who recreated the timeless hippie age (late 60s-70s) and made us feel that we exist in a different time, gave us that vibe of how it felt to live in that era. A big thank you for that!
Fun fact: the lily flower represents rebirth and also associated with Virgin Mary in christianity. The white lilies particularly are also strongly associated with purity and heaven, this is why they are commonly used both for weddings and funerals.
I am a death metal musician, but I recognize talent in other genres. Miss Del Rey(i know that"s not her real name)is the best in the pop world at this moment. There is a sultry genius to her. It's easy for people to hate on things they don't understand, but as one who has stepped out of his comfort zone; I would ask you not to hate this artwork, but accept it as an alien idea. Men were afraid of electricity at one time.
I can totally relate. I'm a lover of music, and genres don't defy my taste in music. Though i mostly listen to bands like Judas Priest, PanterA, Primus and Death, i also listen to rap music like N.W.A and Eminem, electronic music like Major Lazer and so on... Again, music taste not defied by genres, but i find that most modern music is really awful, so it's really nice to see new artist like Lana Del Rey, producing soulful, magical music! And seeing that other people like yourself, that also normally listens to metal, also likes this says quite something about an artist from a whole other genre!
I feel ya, I normally listen to metal as well like lamb of God, suicide silence, slayer, Pantera, also a big fan of deftones, recently been listening to a lot of Chino Moreno's side projects like crosses and team sleep, but when I first heard lana I was thinking my god, finally a artist who is sincere and makes the music she wants
I respect your opinion, but I do beleive it is narrow.I think if you give music a chance, you will find that there are a myriad of great choices to listen to. OPEN YOUR MIND!!!!
Lana’s portraits perfectly an abusive relationship is and how brainwashed and gaslighted we are when we are in that kind of relationship. The very first I listened this song I’ve cried recalling all the bad episodes I got myself into when I was in a toxic relationship 😢 This song helped me to get through the zero contact and my journey to recover myself for a pathological relationship
Just found this song and it reminds me of my parents. They were together since they were 16 until mid 50s 4 years ago, my dads nickname is Jim, it's what my mum would call him and he was abusive and aggressive to her on and off for many years with a drinking and drug problem. But there was still an underlying love, and they had so many stories from their past they shared together until eventually having me. Such a shame things had to end that way after so long.
almost 10 years later, this song still really gets me. I recently managed to escape an abusive relationship where i was simultaneously 'loved' and abused daily. It was so exhausting, confusing and i felt trapped. Whatever your interpretation is of the lyrics, this song is so powerful. Lana's music has always reminded me to stay true and stand up for myself. I hope anybody going through similar finds peace and true happiness
I believe this song is about Jim Jones, the cult leader associated with the Jonestown Massacre. But I also believe it relates to a Pam Morrison, my own sister Mary, and myself who was married to a "Jim". Watch out for those Jims.
Imagine not being emotionally, perspectively and intellectually capable enough to understand that this song isn’t about glorifying anything. Emotions are so much more complicated than good and bad. And words can be meant in so many different ways. Her music is only for a select few who understand the connotations of her lyrics and melodies.

Not so much depressing but forcing the listener to acknowledge his or her dark moods, you know otherwise the mentality of persuading people to be upbeat all the time, it is sickening.
this song is life its a masterpiece. i swear to God ppl don't understand this woman's art, she is way ahead of our time she created this genre , i can not think of any other artist that's as unique as she is she js so original so precious
She doesn't need over-the-top music videos to sell her songs, she doesn't need gimmicks or "stripper" style dancing. She just needs her angelic voice and real simple video. This is why I love her. :)
When this album came out I was 18. Me and my best friend blew off classes and impulsively took a train to New York City. We brought edibles in my bag and shared them with a group of friends we made at Central Park. We literally skipped down the street while listening to these songs for the first time. We got very lost and met weird but delightful people and no one knew where we were. We walked for an entire day and relied on complete strangers to find our way back and it was great. We played this song at night while waiting for our train and talked about love. Every time I hear it now I think about that day and how free I felt
Lana Del Rey is killing it on this track! The short video *on my channel* gave Lana Del Rey the boost they needed to get the recognition they’ve worked hard for.
she’s talking about that part in a abusive relationship where you’d rather be physically hurt than abandoned. this is not romanticized this is real trauma
I'm a Lana fan. I've been through so much shit while listening to her music and can apply a lot of it to moments I've shared with others in my life. So yeah.
Exactly~ most abusive relationships end up with the other (person who's being abused) feeling important or that if he hits me then he must truly love me. They are blinded by their harmful relationship.
literally me. i’m 19 too, and during those years i isolated myself from my friends, i was on my own all the time, high school was horrible. then in 2014 when Ultraviolence came out i became obsessed with Lana and her music, it basically saved me lol I’ll forever love her and this album in particular🖤
“He taught me that loving him was never enough” . Damm... I really felt that. The moment of a toxic relationship when you love someone so much that it even hurts you but it’s never enough. No matter what you say or how much you show your feelings . First, they make you feel like your love is not enough and finally you feel like you’re not enough for them. After 3 years of physical and emotional abuse I came to the conclusion that some wounds will never heal. But after all, I have realised that the best thing for oneself is to stay away from these toxic people. Remember, stay away from people who make you feel you’re hard to love.
Nobody can compare , her music is on a whole other level , I feel as if I'm in a state of euphoria when I'm listening to her music. Everything about her is perfect.
She’s an artist not a pop singer for a season. Being an artist means embracing your uniqueness, being authentic and using what makes you special as a gift and put it into art, that’s why she’s on a different level compared to mainstream singers who haven’t even found their authenticity and just deliver for the💸💸
Thanks God for creating her, she helps me when i’m completely down. I just need that rythm which seems to say “come here, I know everything is a shit, I do not ask questions, i’m here for listening to your soul”

I love howbLana doesn't just do the typical video. Strip scene, corigraphy and a huge image. Lana doesn't need that, and this is a too example! All she needs is her captivating and beautiful voice! She doesn't need the image and overproduced music! Because she is beautiful just the way she is!

joemcbee that's because they're androids made of flesh and bone. only 2% of humans born since 1995 and forward have a personality. the rest are just wheels in a brainwashing machinery ruled by their master: technology. this is horrible and sad to say but it's actually true.
Your parents aren't going to live forever. people just don't understand the lyrics of this song. She's not romanticizing anything, she's singing about the point of view of a victim of abuse. There's so much behind her lyrics and this song represents it so well. Love this masterpiece
Hii
Exactly !!
This is actually quite important to talk about because a lot of times people blame women for the abuse done to them or downplay it because they don’t leave their abuser, but it’s so much complicated than that.
The brain of an abused woman doesn’t see things like she would have done it before she was in that abusive relationship
@@clotildemartinezlopez7017 I couldn’t agree more. The abusive person has to brainwash the victim into believing that they’re safe with them.
Period.
PERIOD! Lana writes this song to show the perspective of these victims yet people still don’t get it
when i got hit, it NEVER felt like a kiss ;/ and I have to wonder who the hell enjoys getting hit? or even compares it to being kissed?
@@Jami-kj4fm she can only show her own perspective, if she never been abused then she should not have wrote this, if SHE felt this way then ok, but I can tell you most victims do NOT feel like this. Abuse is scary, you feel trapped, you feel small, you feel embarrassed! You think the person hurting you loves you, and is just unable to control their rage, or you did something to provoke them! No way does it feel like love, good, or like a kiss, it BREAKS your spirit. PERIOD
@@SABY1561 he hit her and she felt it like a kiss because she loves him very much and she’s blind and thinks he hits her because he loves her

Burnt Norton Are you okay? I used to love that song... when I was in a toxic relationship. I also adore Amy.
for me, this song isn't glamorizing abuse. it takes us into the mind of someone in an abusive relationship. when you're in a codependent, abusive (emotional or physical) relationship you don't see what other people are seeing. you just know you love the person and you can't afford to lose them, love means pain and you're ready to receive every blow just so that person stays. i've been there. it's painful to leave and heal but more painful to stay. this song is deep and real but it's difficult to understand when you haven't lived it.

I used to be in a toxic relationship when this song came out and it made me cry every time I listened to it. This song is not glamorizing abusive relationships, it's genuinely sad and deep. I ran away from that toxic environment and one of the persons I have to thank is Lana.
And are completely over abusive relationships or this song made you think its good to be abused?
I'm so sorry that happened to you. I hope you're doing well now.
@@obeydastrawberry8875 Can't your read?
Agreed ✅
You're absolutely right ❤
Exactly
Honest truth i love it and i agree.... Waiting for some people to come and be mad because of ur brutal honesty which is not wrong
Her songs helps me to float in depression rather drowning🖤🖤🖤
Let's be honest, this song alone deserved a Grammy, let alone the whole album. Critics are saying that she's mad that she didn't get a Grammy but the women she named in her post did. Even if it was her intention, it's cool. Anyone who has worked hard would feel this way. Some stupid people are just taking it the wrong way. I'm not a huge fan of Lana but i appreciate good music when I hear it. And who tf takes Grammy's seriously now ? Trashy artists have been winning.
you're so right!!!
agreed. and they said she 'glamorizes abuse' but she's just singing about her experiences. Anyway lana >>>>all the artists she mentioned, so even if she was calling them out, she wasn't wrong. They're nowhere near her level.
I fucking know right! I can’t believe how this album never won any awards
bc they deserved grammys. plus theyre rigged anyway who cares
right? Cardi b got a grammy before Lana it's ridiculous. If she's mad at that she has any fking right to be and that shows how trash these awards shows can be
As the daughter of a woman who suffered domestic violence at the hands of my father for 22 years of her life, i dont get why Lana is accused of glamorizing violence; if you’ve ever known someone thats in an abusive relationship but refuses to leave because they “love” their abusive partner, ultraviolence’s lyrics actually do make sense given that the song is a traumatized woman’s permanent state of mind just put into words and music.
sorry you had to go through that :((
Becouse this kind of songs make people that being abused is beautiful
It’s not for glamorizing.

Fun fact: the lily flower represents rebirth and also associated with Virgin Mary in christianity. The white lilies particularly are also strongly associated with purity and heaven, this is why they are commonly used both for weddings and funerals.
They are also toxic for humans and pets

***** same lol
I feel ya, I normally listen to metal as well like lamb of God, suicide silence, slayer, Pantera, also a big fan of deftones, recently been listening to a lot of Chino Moreno's side projects like crosses and team sleep, but when I first heard lana I was thinking my god, finally a artist who is sincere and makes the music she wants
I personnaly see NO talent in metal
I respect your opinion, but I do beleive it is narrow.I think if you give music a chance, you will find that there are a myriad of great choices to listen to. OPEN YOUR MIND!!!!
I feel like a more simplistic video like this makes you think more about the lyrics and come up with your own interpretation

Literally grammys don't deserve Lana
Lana’s portraits perfectly an abusive relationship is and how brainwashed and gaslighted we are when we are in that kind of relationship.
The very first I listened this song I’ve cried recalling all the bad episodes I got myself into when I was in a toxic relationship 😢
This song helped me to get through the zero contact and my journey to recover myself for a pathological relationship
ml i hope ur fully healed nobody deserves that
I wasted 15 years on such a relationship, but I’m so glad we’ve made it out and stayed strong. We are worth it and deserve better.
I knew this song for many years ago and I really liked it but I'm coming back to it right now in the exact same way that you described ❤️🩹🩵
I hope ur doing fine now, wish the best for ya ❤️🩹
The references about her alcoholism past is AMAZING, she turns her life into a really magnificient piece of art, I love her.

I believe this song is about Jim Jones, the cult leader associated with the Jonestown Massacre. But I also believe it relates to a Pam Morrison, my own sister Mary, and myself who was married to a "Jim". Watch out for those Jims.
My uncle is a Jim and he’s alright😁 p”P.S. he’s been married for like 26ish years.
2:56 Heaven is on earth😍🔥🔥🔥
Imagine not being emotionally, perspectively and intellectually capable enough to understand that this song isn’t about glorifying anything. Emotions are so much more complicated than good and bad. And words can be meant in so many different ways. Her music is only for a select few who understand the connotations of her lyrics and melodies.

If he hit her then it is abuse...how can it feels like a kiss?
Exactly~ most abusive relationships end up with the other (person who's being abused) feeling important or that if he hits me then he must truly love me. They are blinded by their harmful relationship.
I've been through a relationship like this, and thought that violence was love ... to break free from what was difficult.
