I love William Dalrymple's descriptive prose style and his ability to narrate history as a very human story where characters from the past uncannily come to life as people in whose shoes Dalrymple makes us walk as only he can.
In this documentary named History from Istanbul to Calcutta.....I found many cities and cultures of middle east but nowhere there was Calcutta, not in a single scene and if then it is very poor or impossible to recognize.....so please rethink about the title.
i am following this person for a couple of years...all books covered...now got to know the person audio visually....thanks, al jazeera and @william, waiting for a series of unknown stories on kolkata...
I have read William 's " City of Dijnns" & "From the holy mountains " while the first I found fantasy, the second was non- fiction history of Palestine and the Jew state. His interest in Hinduism, Sufism and Islam is admirable,we need such writers who take a catholic( tolerant) view of world history. They stimulate cross currents of cultures to revive and help this generation to adjust itself my better.
I just started reading From the Holy Mountain, and I'm very impressed with this journey both geographically and in time, it is incredibly interesting. Making it to page 69 I am captivated. I do have to disagree with his opinion about the treatment of the Kafir non believers by the conquering Muslims, as an ethnic Greek and historian. I was also disappointed with the endorsement by Karen Armstrong. Her book about the Crusades has come under great scrutiny by Medieval Scholar Thomas F. Madden. I still believe this is an incredible story and journey. It takes me back when I spent time in both Turkiye and Greece. As a Greek all the manuscripts stolen by the British and Germans must be returned to the monasteries.
William is great thinker and historian and has explained much details from grounds. however, I disagree in some of his thoughts on his religious comments. Respect his passion to discover something new from the past to disagree with the western prospective!
+Crysus Bu well not sure about that but we hindu bengalis also worship her ... yah ur right kali means black as in like all the colours of nature when combined will create the colour black and any colour u add to black will be black ... she is like that where any colour of nature may mix but she remains same ..
Young men loved getting slaughtered in wars, working in mines and generally having a miserable, suffering existence. Nothing patriarchal in that, just the benefit of the top 0.01% regardless of sex.
Writers harping on the conflicts of religions or civilizations and making a living out of it are to be not taken seriously. They hear that one civilization is always bad but travel into it to find that it was all good. This type of PR work is not a serious stuff.

A good scholar. Good report, just a pity about the background music. That was annoying.
For those curious about indian colonial history because of family back ground, it is worthwhile reading Williams books.
Painful to hear him talk about Syria…none of us could have known the state the poor country would soon be in.
Let's all choose better ways to live together in harmony.
Unity in diversity.
